  • Chuck shows you a Fix for Under Extrusion on Creality Ender 3. He found it while testing a Cura 4.4 Plugin. He shows you the plugin and the problem he found on his Creality Ender 3 that was causing under extrusion. It was creating bad 3D prints that looked terrible. The solution is an easy fix and he shows you step by step how to fix it.
He also shows how the Cura 4.4 plugin works on the Creality Ender 3.

I love theses videos. I am a teacher with a seven year old giving me very little free time. The only reason I have been able to keep my ender printing is because of detailed videos like this that debug the process. Thank you.

You saved my ass! After 3 weeks of searching and troubleshooting I found your video. Sure enough my extruder arm was cracked. Thanks for this video!
I got my new printer and had been printing for 3 months and suddenly my prints went to crap. Just like the others commented, material wouldn't lay down and clumped up on the nozzle. I unclogged the nozzle, replaced the nozzle, replaced Bowden tube and fittings, bought a filament dryer...and I still couldn't even print a decent bed level test. I was so happy to find this solution.

I had the same problem a few days ago and didn't really knew what to do. So I ordered the dual drive extruder because I thought that this might fix it.
Really happy to know now that this probably fixes it, thank you!
    Can't wait to receive it.
I really like your channel by the way! Glad I found it when I started with 3D printing.

Been dealing with sudden under extrusion and came across this video. Checked the extrusion mechanism and found that I have the issue with a crack. Glad I saw this. My under extrusion was minimal and random, trying to fix these issues is like chasing phantoms. I knew something had suddenly changed though. Thanks Chuck!

I just wanted to thank you for this video. For months I have been having an under extrusion problem and I couldn't figure it out. It turns out the idler wheel on my Ender 3 wasn't spinning during parts of the print. Luckily I had no cracks on my idler arm. So I just extended the spring out and put it back in and now it runs like a charm. Thank you so much!!!

Thank God. This video made me take a closer look at my extruder AND nozzle, didn't have the same crack but the filament I'm using almost sawed it's way through the arm. They should probably advertise more clearly that glow in the dark filament is abrasive! Thank you so much!

Thank you! I COULD not figure out why my prints were spotty, barely laying down any filament, then laying down none at all mid print. It didn't help that the lever arm broke simultaneously with switching to a new, budget filament. Never was so happy to find a piece on my machine broken because I now know the source of the problem I've been trying to troubleshoot for a few days now.

  • @JeffJackson86
    @JeffJackson86 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

I DID THIS AND IT CREATED A NEW PROBLEM, I got my ender 3 about 3 months ago, and this extruder was a cheap upgrade that seemed worth it so i went for it. THEN i started printing Overture Clear PETG and I kept getting clogs about 1/3 into the print. They weren't clogging at the same spot exactly but close.
I already upgraded to the Capricorn Tubing as well. Every time i would get a clog it was hard to pull the filament back through the tube. I noticed the extruder teeth were deeply embedded into the PETG so i took some quick measurements. Oh WOW- the extruder was smashing the PETG so hard that it was expanding vertically from 1.75+- to 2.10mm. That is a real problem since the Capricorn tubing is ID: 1.95mm ± 0.05mm. AND to add to the problem the location of the extruder puts the marks on the outside radius of the PETG as it travels through the tubing causing increased friction as it pushes against the outside of the tubing.
MY FIX- When i first assembled the new extruder i had two tension springs in my hand(new/old), i chose the stiffer spring (using the accurate forefinger/thumb squish test) thinking the extra tension would be a benefit. ( I was wrong) - NOW I put the soft spring in and haven't had a problem in 2 prints. I hope this helps. Keep those first layers squished! Good luck!

I had been suffering from under extrusion for a while but it was intermittent. I tested esteps, flow rate and everything I could think of.
I had already replaced the extruder for an all metal one a long time ago but something clicked when you mentioned the idler wheel not moving, I went to check it and the bolt had come loose and was indeed not turning.

Thanks Chuck, you really helped me a lot with this video. After six months my Ender 3 would under extrude random layers in the middle of the print, which was initially annoying and made some ( but not all ) of my prints weak. Gradually the problem got worse, to the point where I was almost getting results as bad as you were getting here. Once I watched this video I was sure that I must have a similar problem. I removed the stock plastic extruder arm and sure enough it was split underneath, right next to the threaded insert. I purchased and fitted an aluminium replacement extruder and my Ender 3 is printing perfectly once more.
I cannot stress enough to anybody who buys an Ender 3 that you should just order the aluminium extruder at the same time. Replace the stock extruder as you build your Ender 3. It's a cheap upgrade and it's one which eliminates all kinds of problems in the future. I've had to bin quite a few prints and when the problem was only occurring sporadically it was super frustrating because I never knew whether my print was going to come out strong or with one or several under extruded layers. The aluminium extruder is definitely the way to go.
Love your channel Chuck, appreciate your efforts and am a subscriber !

Thanks! I had the exact problem, my prints were horrible and sure enough, the plastic was cracked and the pully wasn't gripping the filament. My replacement will take a week, so in the meantime - I used my wood burner gun, clamped and melted the plastic pieces together and even added some melted filament for good measure. I know it will fail soon, but I was able to get 2 perfect prints so far until the new parts show up. I also didn't tighten down the pully screw, just enough to hold it in. Pully spins freely and crack is filled. Waiting on new part, but my prints were looking terrible! Tried everything you did to no avail until I saw the crack. Excellent video!

Holy crap, I didn't even think about the extruder tension arm. I had replaced and cleaned out and verified every bit past the extruder and have beating my head against the wall trying to figure this out. Turns out my tension arm's crack was super close to matching yours exactly.I had a winsinn upgrade kit handy that I hadn't put on yet, but unfortunately the spindle and gear on my extruder motor are not the same as yours so I wasn't able to apply either of your fixes (the tension arm [my kit is slightly different than yours], or the replacement) as I have the compression fit gear. However, new motors on the way (thanks amazon) so I can get this printer fixed, and go ahead and upgrade my other Ender3 as well. As usual some sage advice. Thank you so incredibly much.

Thank you so much, man! I had so many problems with my Ender 3, where the walls were not sticking together, but layer adhesion was good. This would make it so I could peel off the walls. I looked at the idler, and I also observed that it wasn't spinning at the same rate as the gear. Turns out it was the spring. I had already upgraded to a full-metal extruder but maybe didn't replace the spring. I still had the spring from the kit, and when I put it in, it worked like a charm.

I'm calling this video gold. I've had bad prints/under extruding for a week+. I've tried a lot of different things. This makes sense. I'll find out soon. I ordered the replacement. I'll post what I learn. Hopefully, good.

THANK YOU! Been trying everything to fix my under extrusion. Checked my arm and it is like you took a picture of my arm and used it in your video. Then new metal one is now on its way from Amazon. Perfect timing on the video Chep!

This video saved me butt! For an entire week my prints have been brittle and awful. Sure enough, the arm was cracked underneath. I replaced the extruder with the aluminum one and after recalibration, I’m back in business! Thank you!

Yes, this is exactly what happened to my ender 3 arm. I spent a whole day to find whats wrong with it. Changed the tube, nozzle, couplings a several time until I noticed that the gears of extruder does not spin well. And the arm is cracked, I replaced it with full 3d printed in carbon 30 % fillament, 100 % infill, and it worked perfectly. Too bad that this video was not released before this happened to me. I am a big fan of you work and keep up the good work!

Chuck - thanks for your videos. They are great help. On the metal extruder I bought recently, they include a rivnut to go on the bolt through the spring. It’s a smaller size than the bolt, so the bolt does not screw in (M3 vs M4 I think) but this stabilises the spring and also allows you to tension the spring with the bolt, because the metal frame is also threaded (The rivnut pushed against the spring)

I want to say thank you very much! I never would have picked up that cracked arm! I tried everything before finding your video. Sure enough, I took the arm off and there was the crack. In my case, I glued it back together (just to make sure this was in fact the issue) and it fixed the under extrusion. I did however purchase the aluminum fix. Thanks again!

You saved me! I was getting crazy under extrusion the same day I had successful prints without any setting changes. My extruder was cracked and never would have guessed to check the tension as it appeared the wheel was moving with the filament. Thank you!

Great content, as always. But one part I wanted to touch on was the bit where you said the gears were the same diameter so you shouldn't have to adjust your esteps. If you adjust the extruder, like many people wind up doing for more tension, you should recheck your esteps for sure since it will likely change how much filament gets extruded. This is especially true for those who changed their esteps while under-extruding.

Thanks for this video. I was having a major problem with under extrusion and I thought it was in the hot end so replaced the nozzle and did the hot end fix and nothing changed. I watched your video and had a look at the extruder arm and didn't see anything but did notice the guide wheel was hardly moving. There wasn't enough spring tension so going to try a new spring...I think I have a few...lol

Really enjoy your great videos Chuck. Been watching your channel since purchasing an Ender 3 last June, along with a couple of other channels that seem very knowledgeable of the Ender 3. Finally decided to assemble it last month, after deciding on what upgrades I would do during the assembly process. It worked great - hot-end & bed heat up accurately; X. Y, & Z axes all move smoothly, quietly, and accurately. The only problem I have is the extruder (motor). It does not work. Am able to turn the motor shaft by hand and all the connections seem to be OK in the electronics case. I am stumped. Any suggestions / thoughts? -- Patrick

Thanks again CHEP. My printer was doing the same thing, and finally decided to replace the extruder. It was also the hairline fracture. Just bought the metal replacement.
Would be cool if the Ender came out with an expensive part model (such as metal extruder/better PTFE tubing/higher quality springs) would defs be worth buying

About 2 months of printing now and haven't really had any troubles. Started getting extreme under extrusion and tried everything. Been at it for a couple hours now and was just about to give up because I haven't been able to print. Found your video and checked notice that my lever arm is cracked! I couldn't believe it! Thank you so much for preventing me from losing all hope!

      @StenBuilt 2 ปีที่แล้ว

@@vodfives5555 I don't believe I changed filament too often before mine broke either, but sure enough, the lever arm was barely being held on. Once the bolt for the arm came out, it almost fell apart. The crack was hard to see until I shined a flashlight directly at it when it was all still assembled.
