  • This video shows the tear down and rebuild of a 76-year old Autolite starter from a 1946 Willys Jeep. It barely turned over under 6-volt power before the build. Now it is powerful enough to easily start the engine!
This video shows exactly how I successfully rebuilt it.

Got an original 6v cranking motor and a reproduction for the Willys MB that quit on me. So looking at youtube videos to rebuild/repair them before I sink money into another one. Thank you for sharing your very helpful video. Gives me an idea of where to check for faults.

The one bushing you couldn't get will come out by breaking it up with a straight screwdriver. The brass is soft enough to break apart. You can ream it with a regular drill bit if needed.

You didn’t show how you tighten the four screws on the case.

Cool video, i referbish a lot of "old iron" and have been complaining for 15+ years, that the old timey starter/generator repair shops had died out, so i need to learn to do it myself, hah. Im looking at this prestolite starter in my $600 case backhoe with a good snout/bendix, and the worst motor ive ever seen, and a pile of old prestolite willys starter parts i got in a trade, and gonna see if i cant save myself some cash, you see, the case parts guys are happy to sell me a new starter, but they all want about $3fiddy, which is more than half what i payed for the whole thing, hah.

I notice a lot of rebuilders on here do not redo the armature or test the armature. How often does the armature actually needs rebuilding would you say?
