  • Many view 6-volt ignition systems on old Willys Jeeps as unreliable and a thing of the past. I thought this for the longest time and was considering converting it a 12-volt ignition system.
The more I thought about it, however, the more determined I was to figure out how to make the original 6-Volt ignition work. 6-volt ignition vehicles like the military Jeeps won WWII. Why would they be unreliable now.
In this video I will share 6 things I discovered about 6-volt ignition systems. Do these 6 things and your old Willys will start every time.
In addition to a reliable start, you will be keeping it original.

My 46 CJ2A had been converted to 12V when I got it. It seemed to work OK, so I never messed with it. I presume the coil and incandescent bulbs had been replaced. On the other hand, I had an old Honda motorcycle that someone had thrown a 12V battery into and fried all the bulbs. That, I converted back to 6V.

I haven't gotten that far. I will probably replace the original 6 volt headlights with 6 volt LED retrofitted bulbs. I want to keep it original with a couple of exceptions. I will probably add turn signals and brake lights as well. Not original but safer.
