- When it comes to GM starters, they are very similar to each other for many different years and makes. A lot of their interior parts are the same. In this video, Josh will show you how to rebuild a starter after inspecting it and making sure all the parts are functional.
This is part one of a two part series. Stay tuned for much more!

Good explanation of the components of the good ol' GM starter. Thanks, Cad Dad, now on to part two...
I've run into videos where they didn't give any tips , tricks or hints on how to do this or that on any vehicle. Some of the British videos had more of that than American what gives with the helpful tips. This guy's has as much as the British do.
Very nicely done video. Thanks for the thorough explanation and attention to detail. Keep 'em coming!
Thank you sir my name is Jerid O'Connor I can make a new spring with a windshield wiper and needle nose plyers. Very helpfull thank you for showing me that and spending the time
Glad you enjoyed the video and thanks for watching! Josh
Could you make a video on (How to make a spring)?! Sounds interesting and I would really like to know how! I don’t have a whole lotta $$ at all,So it would be really helpful! Thank you in advance!
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it. Josh
Awesome video! I am your Newest Subscriber! Please keep this content coming! You are very knowledgeable, wise, and explain everything in complete detail! Thanks again and I look forward to watching all your videos and future content!
Very great Video. I restore a 1958 Fleetwood sp:) you give me good inspirations:)
I have never done it but I believe it would involve swapping around the wiring to the brushes. Starters are designed to always turn the "proper" direction no matter the polarity of the incoming power. Josh
Awesome. By far one of the better quality videos on youtube for this specific starter. Thankyou !
Thank you for the compliment, sir! Josh

Did it! Reversed both bolt contacts in solenoid - then inverted the solenoid brass wheel; it had tracks from spark transfer. Spray bombed the armature and stator (it feels smooth) - brushes are Standard Motor RX60 and delivered to E Canada from Amazon for $19. Starter is a Delco 8PG/(same brushes as 8MT and 10MT I think - millions of starters by the time fo the eraly 70s?
Seems mine has have just one leather washer (!) at far end, notice that your demo had 2 shims or spacers - anyway I am in accord with the Chev Corvair service manual diagram!
Great job Josh - easy to see & well organized!
Yikes - among the typos, the price - the brushes set of 4, no springs, was $10 CDN, delivered. Anyway now for a bench test. Thank you, Josh for the video - you instill confidence..
Great video with excellent details. My starter is newer, but the solenoid info is still useful to me. Thank you for this.
They are all basically the same. Just lay out the parts carefully when
disassembling so you can put it back together correctly. Thanks for
watching! Josh
Awesome video man. Clutch on mine was bad. Thank you!
Glad the video was a help. Thanks for watching.. Josh
Thank you for your knowledge 💪🏽 USA 🇺🇸 USA 🇺🇸
Thank you for watching. Josh
Well worth watching
Thank you, Josh
You ain’t lyin Brother! I just found this guy,and he is awesome,Knowledgeable and explains everything in detail!!
Good video
Awesome
Great vid dude! On a 305 starter I'm working on just like this The two clips that hold the engagement arm for the solenoidon separate in two on the shaft unfortunately let's see what I can do
Thanks! Take some pictures so you can get it back together correctly. Josh
I need a starter to turn counter clock wise! Can you reverse the direction of the starter? thank you
i just did it, 2 of 3 bearings were worn, i made new and everything cleaned and lubricated, now it spins as hell
That's great you got your starter rebuilt and working right! Glad the video was useful and thanks for watching. Josh
Can you reverse the direction of that starter motor? Reversing the cables will not reverse direction, Why?
Thanks for the very nice video. Somewhere there should be the copper contacts for the solenoid that you can turn 180* individually. Do you have for it a spring?
You are correct. Many designs allow for the contact to be flipped over to be good as new. Josh
Thank you. That shaft snap ring was bugging me!
Do you know what causes starters to fail from sitting for long periods of time? I have a starter/solenoid from a Chevrolet Express van that failed. When you turn the key nothing happens. No noise or anything from the starter. The problem is traced to the starter/solenoid. The van has less than 4k miles, but has sat idle for years. There is no outward sign of corrosion. I just hate to buy another starter when this starter has hardly been used.
My guess would be that the solenoid has corrosion inside it and the armature is stuck. You might want to remove the starter and take apart the solenoid and see if it moves freely. Could just need to be cleaned up or replaced instead of the entire starter being replaced. Josh
Is it normal for a 47 cadillac to turn over slow?
I need parts for a Delco 1107678 can you help where to look
Tell me something, that pen that holds a solenoids housing onto the starter,... My question is if that pin is missing ,would that be the reason why my appendix isn't shifting forward when I turn the key
The pin in necessary for the yoke to pivot and engage the drive gear
when the solenoid energizes. Josh
Great video!
I have a question..
Do you have any specific grease for the starter bearings or the best grease i could use for it?
Thank you in advance...
The bushings are impregnated with oil when manufactured but you can apply a small amount of light engine oil or electric motor lubricating oil. It doesn't take much; you don't want it to get on the brushes or commutator. Josh
How about for the gears?
@@vica2130 The pinion gear is designed to run dry. Only the ends of the armature should be very lightly oiled.
Light motor oil applied sparingly. No grease and no lubrication elsewhere in the stater. Lubricants contaminate contacts and brushes.. This is all That is needed to the best of my knowledge. Josh
I plan to buy a 2000-2006 Chevy Suburban. If the starter does not look replaced, I plan to take it out to "renew" it. I will not wait until it fails. That is, I plan to replace the wearable parts.
For this year range, will I have problem buying rebuild parts for the starter?
Thanks
None of my regular suppliers show rebuild parts for these starters and they are different from the older units. However, rebuilt starters are available. Something I have done when parts were not available and there was a need for number matching unit, I bought a rebuilt unit and parted it out. Josh
@@CaddydaddyGreat idea
Brushes also appear severely worn.
Great video. Would be an absolutely amazing video if the annoying background music was gone.
Annoying? I would prefer water-boarding over having to listen to that music. I only lasted halfway through the video, I couldn't take it any longer. 😢
Never can understand why a video has background music. Can be very annoying.😮😮
Good video , But I think on dissemble of the solenoid you went a little fast not giving the viewers a good look.
We will try to show the details better in the future. Thanks for watching. Josh
With all do respect,You do know there is such thing as a (Rewind Button) for a reason!
