Late 90's early 2000's this wasn't bad. Like some have said, 250hp in a v8 pony car was pretty good. Yes, today you could swap almost any mild build LS (4.8, 5.3, 5.7, 6.0, 6.2) into it today, the tech just wasn't available at the time. Could have it been done, yes, but probably at a prohibitive cost. It's amazing what can be done with a junkyard motor and a laptop these days.

The S-10 was never built to be fast. It was built to be good on gas, make trips to the hardware store, or make light duty deliveries. They make great parts trucks!
The 4.3 is the same architecture as a 350 sbc, but with 2 cylinders removed. Even some sbc parts fit on in it. So it's more than possible to make slightly better than stock sbc power numbers but with a much better power to weight ratio.

@@hectoraranda8097 was it an LV3 ecotec based on gen V architecture? They are rated at 285. Power Torque I assume your talking about remanufacters engines and outlets to places like orielly's etc. The early 4.3 from them would be a stock reman.

Considering that in that day the engines had a lot lower compression from the factory and considering the power goals were a lot lower it's not a bad idea. 200whp was really good at that time, consider the ls1 was new, the vortech 350s were still being used in trucks not the 5.3 or 6.0 ls series, they came with 240hp at the flywheel.
