I haven't had this after-reaction to an episode of an anime...ever? It's been a while, if I have. In any case, I have thoughts. And yet am also speechless. Banana Fish does that to you.

The ending gets me every time... Ash's voice actor earned my respect in this show because the way he screamed Shorter's name and Eiji's name in this episode with so much emotion left me in tears 😭
SERIOUSLY! That hug could cure diseases -- I needed more of THOSE soft moments in this episode! Him stopping from shaking is just...too powerful.
YES! Both the word Sayonara being a trigger now (seriously, you just KNEW something bad was going down, then), and I thought Sing was going to get hurt, too! UGH.
Ash's VA is just soooo damn good. His performance in episodes 9, 10, 19, and this one just cemented his ability. I don't think I could watch a dub, if they ever did one, because it wouldn't measure up to this. The emotion he did for it was just soooo good! :) Thank you for the comment!
Omg I love when everyone gets the realisation as Eiji is teaching Ash how to say goodbye. Oof. Yup. Pain.

Poor, poor Ash. Not only was he assaulted by Foxx, he had to continue to fight after that with no time to heal or anything, only to watch Eiji get shot. That scene was heartbreaking.
I wish people like Yut-Lung would realize that Eiji is Ash's greatest STRENGTH. He constantly reminds Ash of his humanity. Ash can be a regular teenager around him. That's something that Yut-Lung has never had, and he resents Ash for having that.
Blanca...Blanca is a big ball of contradictions. It's infuriating.

Yes, people in Dragon Moon's life have been a source of pain for him, it's hard to see them as anything positive and Blanca is FINALLY coming around to tell him...ahhh...but it seems to be too late?! And YES! Reading the manga HAS given me more insight on Blanca and he's less infuriating there than in the anime, but still. You couldn't come to this realization about Eiji two episodes ago, Blanca?! Really??

I’m just like 😈 the whole time and then 😭 at the same time ooommg she’s almost at the eennndd! I love the pure rage ash showed when eiji got shot. When I first watched this I was like yes ash freakin murder the fool how dare he hurt baby eiji! And yes! Dragon moon is sooo complex! He seemed so desperate to keep Blanca too.. maybe he wants him to be his “anchor” I don’t rly think he’s a monster though despite how terrible the things he’s done impacted the main cast. He’s just tragic so to speak. And oh the turn arounds... phew! I also think that ash knows that he can’t get away from the life he is living right now because he seemed to brush it off with the learning Japanese but deep down he knows he can’t escape... which is so sad poor boy... and ah yes sayonara... the trigger word for all banana fish fans...Get ready girl for the most painful, most sweet two episodes! Oh, Ash reacted exactly as I thought he would...and Dragon Moon...argh, he needs someone like Eiji bad, but Blanca ain't it for him! And yes, I don't think Yut-Lung is a monster either...he just wants to try and become one to be on "Ash's level," but that just isn't possible, is it?

It’s the panicked laughter at the end that makes me feel for you 😅 the scream when Ash cries out Eiji’s name, the VA deserves an Oscar for that! This is one of my favourite episodes, really looking forward to your reactions to the next two! You might want to do them both at the same time if you haven’t already, just because A. Cliffhangers are a bitch, and B. I don’t want anyone to spoil it for you 😊
Oh, I haven't been that stressed during an anime episode in a while! And YES! Episodes 9, 19, and this episode cemented that Mr. Uchida, Ash's VA, deserves all the voice acting awards! He was perfect in this role and in this episode.
Ahhh, so....I've watched Episode 23 for Patreon, so there's that. But to be honest, I had to take a break after that episode to finish catching up with the manga to prepare for this final episode. We shall see! Hahahaha, thank you for the kind words and the comment!!

I actually watched banana fish when it was airing in 2018, and I remember being a walking zombie for a week waiting to see what would happen... Your reaction actually made my heart ache because I remember feeling exactly the same... Unable to escape the dread. 😭
I feel your pain! I tried to brace for a possible unhappy ending, but it exceeded my expectations! Banana Fish really doesn't let you escape the pain of its ending -- it makes you wallow in it! Thank you for the comment -- at least now we can all commiserate together!
The thing is Yut-Lung probably wants to fight and die by Ash's hands. When Yut-Lung helped Ash escape in episode 10 and Ash says something like "you'll regret this. I will kill you." Yut-Lung was like "So it's meant to be." Then later he challenged Eiji to shoot him and SIng even mentions how he would have let Eiji do it. Yut-Lung probably wants to die by Ash's hands since he knows fighting Ash would lead to death. Kind of different from Golzine who wants Ash to die by his hands.
The funny thing is that Yut-Lung is the only one who realizes that Eiji is Ash's weakness. Golzine never figured it out at all. He's so fixated on Ash himself that he never sees Eiji. All the plans involving kidnapping/threatening Eiji were Yut-Lung's plans.
Also, I want to point out some of the lyrics of the ending song. "The color of red that covers the pavement, painted with the blood of somebody you love. Is this the sacrifice for the broken, losing the purest of what's in your heart." Yeah if that isn't this scene....that song is really powerful and connects strongly with Eiji and Ash. I would (After you finish) go back and listen to the ending by itself.

YES! Thank you for bringing this up -- I didn't mention this in the reaction, but you're so right -- Ash said he was going to kill Yut-Lung back in episode 10 and Dragon Moon's held him to it...ahh, Yut-Lung definitely has a death wish, which is interesting parallel to Ash -- it seems Ash doesn't want to die but isn't afraid of it -- whereas Yut-Lung maybe "wants" to fight and die, but as we saw in Episode 20, when he cowered by the car and Blanca, is actually afraid of it. Interrresssssting.....
Yeah, Blanca seems to see Eiji as a weakness, but then changes his mind. And Golzine is so hyper-fixated on Ash, he loses sight of everything else. Good point!
Yes!! I'm definitely going to listen the ED closer by the end of this series. I was told on Patreon to not pay close attention to the OP or ED until the end, because they are "spoiler-y" so I've been actively ignoring them for the most part, hahahaah!! that whole final sequence drove me mad from ash saying sayonara to eiji right before he gets shot, eiji fading into unconsciousness and then the title card saying as i lay dying?? can you believe we had to wait a whole week for the resolution?? have no idea how i survived that wait and you definitely wore the right shirt for this reaction!

AHHH, as soon as they started teaching each other Japanese phrases, and the Sayonara moment was brought up, I was like REALLY?! REALLY?! Hahaha, that final scene is just the most stressful thing. **nervous laugh** And we have two episodes left...and thank you! when you're trying to convince yourself that eiji's okay but then the title of this episode suddenly showed up. damn! i loved how you're strongly in denial and that's everyone's reaction after watching this episode.
that delicate hug from eiji was also one of my most favorite asheiji moments and that hug surely got the trembling ash to calm down. that was really beautiful! and damn, that unnecessary timing of the 'sayonara' lesson killed me each and every time!

This episode was insane! It's one of my favorite reactions, but it left me shaken for SURE! It's SO sad to see Ash rattled to his core and that VA work...**chef's kiss** Still, I'm so terrified for Eiji's sake. And Lao...man...I feel I need to check the manga to see if there's more on the justification of his hatred towards Ash besides Shorter's death, since he was never explained that it was Banana Fish. As soon as THAT scene was unfolding, i had that feeling of dread, but when IT actually happened, I just got that cold, almost metallic feeling in front of my face 😰... ahhh these last few episodes will be hard to not watch back to back, its that one last descent on the roller coaster! 🎢

I just saw the episode titled it already I’m scared. I know nothing about as I lay dying except for the fact that it was the first story to introduce like the POV from a character and that it’s about a family getting over grief.
YUP, this episode's title was not a misdirect and it terrified me! @_@ The fandom had to buckle in for this one!

Oh lord. Here it comes. I won’t say get prepared because there’s nothing you can do to prepare yourself for what happens in the next two episodes. I spoiled the ending for myself by accident when I first watched the series, but even that doesn’t help. All I can say is good luck. 🙏🏻

Yut-Lung being completely obsessed with Eiji must have made him reconsider 🙄 He seems very slow-minded, for a pro ...
I feel that Yut-Lung just want to make a connection with someone, and since he's convinced himself that he can't befriend people, then he'll just have to connect with an enemy. He didn't choose a random on, I mean, Golzine is certainly not an ally, but he's only an enemy in the strategic sense, there's really no affect here. But with Ash, it's different. Yut-Lung chose himself the enemy that he sees is like him. A way to non metaphorically fight against himself, but I think that in his head, Ash has to exist as his nemesis in order to "validate" the way of life Yut-Lung chooses to maintain. He's choosing, now now that his brothers are gone : he is on top of the food chain on the Chinese side, there's a billion decisions he could take in order to rule this mafia in his own way, but he's choosing not to change anything : the chinese mafia is still ruled by a heartless Lee, and Yut-Lung is still a hurt petty child with too much power and not enough love. And since he can't grow, he won't allow his mirror to grow either. Ash is a better person with Eiji, a better person who isn't defined only by his role in gang's life anymore. He's becoming someone else, someone more than a gang boss in the light of Eiji. And Yut-Lung can' t have that, a mirror exists only to reflect. Ugh, just go to therapy Yut-Lung, for 🦊 sake ...
Eijiiiii my baby boy!! See, that's why it seems humanly impossible to me to be able to not binge watch ep 22 to 24. I know that you've already watched next episode by now, so you know, but damn, me I didn't even take time to process, I just watched the next episode like it was only one long episode. God I hate cliffhangers...
Ash being held by Eiji after his rescuing was just 🥺 that's so impressive how unthreatened he is by Eiji, since the very beginning. And how it's good for him. He never recoils from Eiji's touch, it soothes him even. Nothing ever soothes him since he's in survival mode, nothing except Eiji. And this is one of many things that shows that Eiji isn't a weakness to Ash, on the contrary.
Anyway, nice reaction! Sa. Yo. Na. Ra. (welcome to the club of people who can't hear sayonara without watering eyes)
HAHA! I think I'm going to wait until the final episode for that last stage, but man, "physically angry with this show" is a MOOD! Hahaha!
And Blanca....ahhhh...honestly, from what I've read in the manga so far, Blanca is much more fleshed out and his transition at this point is a little more justified and makes more sense, but that's a discussion for later. ^^ Yut-Lung is so tragic in this show...there's so much complexity to his character, but like you said, he's a "hurt child with too much power and not enough love." It's sort of like what Ash COULD have become if he'd kept with Golzine as Blanca originally advised him to do. But Ash met Eiji and that turned everything upside down...ahh, the mirror analogy is so good, but also. Therapy. Was it a thing in the 80's? He needed it. ^^
Oh, I can't lie; I watched Episode 23 the day after this episode. I couldn't wait. Now, the final episode? That's a different story. I want to be caught up with the manga before getting into that! :)
And that HUG. That hug was EVERYTHING in this episode, but we needed more of those moments! And yeahhhhh, Sa. Yo. Na. Ra. I will never hear that word again without thinking of this episode. **Kill Bill Siren Blares** Fun times.

Sing caving under the stress and pressure? It's insane since he's ONLY 14...seriously...and Yut-Lung, he just....I have issues with him in this episode, but I'm curious to see as a whole how his character comes together.

The rage in Ash's eyes while he killed the two guys. I feel like I was never really afraid of Ash,just afraid of the things he can do. But this scene made me be afraid of him.
What I like about Lao is that he don't want to kill someone like Eiji,who hasn't done anything.
Yut-lung seeing himself as a monster makes me really sad because he's not,he is just really hurt and broken.And the hurting face Yut-lung makes when Blanca leaves,ouch.I personaly like to think that Yut-lung is afraid of Blanca leaving because he is like one of the only ones who doesn't see him as a monster. But that's just what I like to think. XD
Yut-lung just can't accept that there is someone like him who is loved and still can love. Something that he doesn't have.
I totally agree on your opinion about Blanca realizing that Eiji is for Ash like Natasha was for him.
My theorie to the reason why Yut-lung want Ash to fight him is maybe he wants to die because he feels like he got his revenge and doesn't see a point to be there anymore. So he wants to get killed by someone who's above his level? That's one of the theories that I have to that.
In the next episode is finally my fav scene. I'm looking really forward to your reaction to it.

This ending is SOOOO sad! What's worse? When you read the manga, the Sayonara part IS NOT there! @___@ MAPPA literally added it in...it comes up later, but not in that exact moment Eiji is shot. How dare they bring more pain onto us!
And Ash....and....I was afraid of Ash when he shot Abraham because that was a glimpse of what could happen if you hurt someone he cared about, but this scene at the end was just a confirmation of it. Scary Ash is scary, indeed.
And yes, Lao at LEAST doesn't want to hurt someone innocent like Eiji. And Yut-Lung has been raised his whole life to believe he is something that I don't think he really is, and you're right -- Blanca sees him as something else. So when he leaves, he's really hurt...he just can't accept that someone like Ash can love and be loved, indeed. Ahhh, there's so much going on and next episode has your favorite scene!? Oh ho ho! I'm excited!

*Descending Stories (Showa Genroku Rakugo Shinju): criminally underrated, an actual gem. The story, the characters so interesting and complex. A story about the art of story-telling.

I'm sorry but Eiji has to survive, when he taught him saying "Sayonara" and then got shot broke my heart😢😢😢😢 they made a really big mistake shooting Eiji. But with how heartbroken, sad and mad he was and screaming out for him had me on the edge of my seat... I'm not ready for next week episode. But the hug he gave Ash was so sweet and agree that was really pure. But they really done messed up shooting Eiji (he's not his weak link, but his strong link to keep him goong) but then told him he's glad he's safe had me almost in tears and after saying the word "sayonara" at the moment had my heart on edge. I think a big part of why dragon moon is doing this is because he wants to drag ash down to his level. Like, they both come from traumatic backgrounds, but ash has love from others and can still love in return, while dragon moon feels he can’t have either. You put it best when you said he’s just a kid, because I feel like he forgets that sometimes, even I forgot several times the first time I saw the series. Which is also why I love his dynamic with sing throughout the series, especially in the manga, because dragon moon always seemed much more open with him, even though he had his secrets.

Yut-Lung is frustrating and a complex character, but by the end of the show (and at this point), you can see his perspective about Ash, even if his methods of handling it may not have worked out to his liking.

Ahhhh, this series is so, so sad, and this episode might be the epitome of pain and stress! I had a feeling of foreboding and dread the entire episode, and it all accumulated in those final moments with Eiji being shot!
It's sooo sad, because so much of this could have been prevented, and it wasn't a military, golzine, or a huge gang fight either...just two "scorpions in the garden." UGH. T_T I hated how heartbroken Ash looked, and that "Sayonara" line -- I've caught up with the manga, and it's not in there! MAPPA just added that! Ahhh, how dare they!? Hahahaha In any case, I cannot IMAGINE how manga readers felt reading this for the first time, and then later knowing it's going to be adapted. That is hard!
And Foxx and Golzine's interesting relationship here gets more and more intriguing -- I hated Foxx for what he did to Ash, knowing his backstory and everything, but thank goodness Eiji was there to comfort him! T_T We need more moments like THOSE in this series!

It's soooo good; honestly, I love the adaptation of the anime and how they've seamlessly modernized it. Looking at the manga, you can't really tell, other than phones and computers being the only technological advance you really see, haha! And New York City is a little less dingy than in the manga (but NYC in the 80's was pretty dingy, haha!).
