Banana Fish: Episode 18 Reaction! "Islands in the Stream!"

- I feel, in part, that most of this series has been leading to this episode.
That this is a turning point towards the final act of the show. I have a LOT of emotions with this episode, but mainly? I'm terrified. Genuinely, terrified, as we go into the last fourth of Banana Fish...and I know what Stage Four is for certain, now.

This is my favorite episode. Everything from the moments between Eiji and Ash to what Ash would do for Eiji. The thing that always gets me about the scene when Yut-Lung hands Ash a gun is that Ash doesn't hesitate. He doesn't think about it it just pulls the trigger. Then when he realizes it's empty he asks for more bullets. He had no problem doing this for Eiji. That always hit me hard.
The funny thing is that this isn't the first time Yut-Lung used Eiji against Ash. He had Shorter kidnap Eiji so Ash would go willingly back to Golzine to save him. Yut-Lung seems to be the only person who really figured out Ash's weakness. (also yes Yut-Lung does have the best fashion in the show.) Thanks for the reaction!
Oh my gosssssh, yes, this episode is one of my favorites in the series, too! And YES! I had to go back and re-watch it at the end -- just seeing everyone's reactions, and yes, Ash would do ANYTHING for Eiji. It just...it just tore me up, too!
And yes, Yut-Lung has had it against Eiji from the moment he walked into that study and Ash didn't flinch. Ugh. This shooooow, thank you so much for the comment and kind words. I'm so nervous for what's to come, but happy you all are watching it with me!
Are you sure he didn’t know it wasn’t loaded and was just messing with yut-lung when he asked for more bullets? Ash is familiar with guns i think he’d recognize if it was empty and i doubt he’d trust them with not killing eji he wouldn’t just kill himself and leave him we saw how protective he is about eji.

I just realized how bad at lying Eiji was in the 2nd (?) episode and now he knows that Ash is lying but can act calm and as if he doesn't know....
Also, Eiji's and Ash's relationship is so beautiful. The fact that Ash shot (well, almost, because there were no bullets) himself, with literally no hesitation shows that.... :')
Ahhhh, yes, the character development! Ugh, but in the saddest way possible! And ughhh, yes, that scene in the hanger. Just. Their relationship! T__T It's so beautiful but this episode was so tragic by the end...uggggghhhhh.... thank you for the comment!

Blanca is why neutrality can be deadly. For him to not even try save Ash when he met him, knowing what he was going through, is just ridiculous. And for him to tell him to go BACK?? How programmed is he to follow rules that he'd tell Ash to go back to Golzine? But, you can see that Blanca isn't 100% comfortable with everything. His expressions contradict his words.
And yes, the scariest thing about Blanca is how affable and friendly he seems! It doesn't seem fake, either. Someone called him a cleaned up assassin Hagrid😁
Poor Yut-Lung still doesn't understand love. He's still angry that Ash can find it in him to love, despite them having similarly horrible backgrounds.
Oof. Things are gonna get heavy.

And YES, Blanca is such a scary take on the concept of "Neutrality" -- he knows to follow orders and things will "work out" for him, but when he told Ash to go back, I was like, "do you realize JUST HOW BAD things are for him? HOw could he say that?" Yeah, his expressions definitely contradict his words, but still...regardless of how uncomfortable he is, he still tells Ash to do what will keep him "safe." But for Ash, "safe" doesn't mean "happy" or "healthy" necessarily.
And you are 100% right -- Yut-Lung "wants to know what love is" **sings** but just can't get it...how can Ash love anything with how the world has been to him (and Dragon Moon?). He was so perplexed this episode, but I feel Dragon Moon isn't going to react well to it...and that makes me nervous.

1:08 Hypothesis : Ash's mum left because his father is a cold piece of trash ? I think we talked about this in the sixth episode in Cape Cod : two woman were in Jim's life, they each gave him a son, and both leaved after that? Two MOTHERS decided to go away and leave their child with this cold jerk ? And then the only woman we see him interact with acts like a victim of domestic abuse ? Idk, but all of this screams code red to me ...
This episode had me on the floor, gasping. It started with domestic Asheiji (7:18 Eiji's shirt. Omg. This shirt is iconic 🙈) yet we completely forgot about this scene because... This episode !!
I think it's the first time I really feared for Ash's life. Before that I was thinking that he's the badass main character, so he'll always survive, u know ? But then suddenly, he took Yut-Lung's gun and shoot his own beautiful head. Not loaded, thank God (yeah, lots of God's talk in this episode, and not only, there were before and u'll probably see more of it in the next ones, it's really interesting), but it doesn't matter that there was no bullet in it : Ash fuckin' pulled the trigger. He's supposed to be dead now. And he looked so defeated during the rest of the episode, he's like "whatever happens to me, it doesn't really matter, if I'm dead it means Eiji's safe, so be it, I'm dead." Now Ash cares so little about his own life it's terrifying, cause, who's gonna protect him then ? 😱

I was thinking this too about Griffin and Ash's mothers; their father must've driven them away. Jennifer seemed very passive, and made a lot of excuses for Jim's horrible behavior

Yeah, that is a really good point about Ash and Griff's moms leaving Jim -- it probably was him. :( Yeah, "code red" indeed!
Just, this episode is one of my favorites from the series, but also so scary/jaw-dropping/insane! YES! That dang shirt! So iconic!! And ahhh, yes, we've build Ash up to be this invincible force this series, and then in comes Blanca who puts him instantly in his place. @_@
And I love your concept that technically, from this point on, Ash should be "dead." He made that choice -- not only in pulling the trigger, but getting all of the Banana Fish info to them, in going back to Golzine. He's been "considered" dead in the past (at the hospital), but here, it would have been real if the gun had been loaded. Man. Ash is just so dead set on protecting the ones he loves (coughcough Eiji) that his own survival isn't a factor anymore. And that is so heart-wrenchingly beautiful and tragic. T___T But yeah...oh, Stage Four is next episode and I can't wait to watch it with you! Cheers! Thanks for the comment!
They have the best relationship I've ever seen in an anime. They're not just the typical cutesy, lovey, dovey gay couple. They're just too realistic and that's what I love about banana fish. This show will go down in history. The best. Thank you for appreciating ash and eijis relationship. Great reaction always. I just bought the manga. I also went out and splurged on Volumes 5-19 as a set from someone -- it's not come in yet; hopefully will be here by the time I've finished the series. It's so hard to find English copies of the manga, so if you could let me know where you got yours, that'd be great! I would still like to get volumes 1-4! :3

@@RomaniaBlack I always got shivers when ash is soft, calm and peaceful when it comes to eiji. He always makes sure that eiji is protected at all cost. I cried everytime when ash begged for eijis safety.

Ash will do anything to protect Eiji. Like shooting himself for him was much better than putting Eiji in danger. That scene shook me, realizing how important Eiji was to him. He even handed over all the information about banana fish. It was difficult, but he put Eiji above everything. (No matter if he has to die, no matter how hard he works gathering information about banana fish, all his grudge against Golzine), when it comes to Eiji's safety …. Ash really would do anything.
Yes, this episode cemented that Ash will do ANYTHING for Eiji. Even give up his own life and all that info we've worked the whole series to obtain. Just...ugh...I was reeling from how fast the deal was and how quickly things escalated to the state they're in...man...if that's not love, right?! Thank you so much for the comment!!
I don't know if somebody already told you but there is a side story which is called 'private opinion' that tells about how Blanca and Ash met. I can recommend you to read that and I don't think there are any spoilers in it.
The scene where Ash would kill himself to save Eiji without hesitation gives me goosebumps.
Yut-lungs reaction makes me so sad, he just can't understand the feelings that Ash has towards Eiji. It really is sad.I just want to give him a big hug.

And ahhh, that whole warehouse scene is one of my favorites in the series! There's just SO MUCH in terms of character development, plot development, and the relationships between everyone involved...ahhh...so sad, but SO GOOD.

I can't imagine how hard it must be (mentally) for Ash to go back. As much as he cares about Eiji, that last shot of Ash's face in the car is painful. He's gotta go back to a space of trauma with Dino in order to keep Eiji safe.

Yessss, that last show was just PURE SORROW on Ash's face -- such a look of defeat, going back to Golzine, giving up all they've worked so hard for....just to protect Eiji. If that's NOT love, I don't know what is! But it was soo hard to watch...

the scene where ash takes the gun and immediately pulls the trigger never fails to give me chills.. the ending of the episode too. it is crazy how fast he goes through with the deal, but it definitely means that the next few episodes get to be intense right off the bat :')) looking forward to seeing the rest of the series with you!!

i'm being 100% serious when I say that I have not known peace since I first watched this episode almost 3 years ago. I'll just be going about my day and then I'll get a flash of ash laying down in that dingy warehouse completely content to waste away since he knows there's someone who cares for him unconditionally and then i need to take a break
Daddy Blanca and Ash have such a complicated relationship but it's clear that Blanca cares for Ash and wants him to survive but even if he's physically surviving is Ash truly going to be alive if he goes back to Golzine?
Also Yut lung's little tantrum at how little hesitation Ash has to given everything up for a normal person like Eiji really gave me an insight into his character. He thinks of him and Ash as birds of a feather with traumatic pasts who survived by becoming cold killers and that they're above things like friendship and love and it's not possible for people like them. But the fact that Ash has found Eiji, a completely normal person, and would do anything for him and vice versa shows Yut-lung that it is possible for people like them to have warmth and if Ash was able to find it then what was wrong with Yut-lung that he couldn't? It also helps to explain why he hates Eiji so much
Ugggghhh, right?! That warehouse scene was just sooooo powerful! Everything about it! Yes, Blanca clearly cares for Ash, but his sense of duty in relation to being in a relationship has definitely gone a different course than Ash's. So complicated, but then, what about Banana Fish ISN'T complex?!
Yessssss, your explanation here is exactly how I feel about Dragon Moon, too. Dragon Moon has compared himself with Ash and we the audience have compared them this entire series, but it's definitely becoming apparent how truly different they are -- and how, yes, Yut-Lung can't believe that someone can find warmth in this world that he and Ash are trying to survive in, and that warmth is in such a normal person. It's so tragic, dammit! T_T But so beautiful! Ahhhhhh....it makes me excited/nervous for the next episodes! Thank you so much for the comment!

The gun scene really gets me screaming. I've always loved that scene. It really demonstrated the raw purity in which Ash lived his life. How he would do ANYTHING for Eiji. The people who aren't scared of dying are the most scary out of everyone... he didnt hesitate for A SECOND, and Yut-Lung is so shocked, yet its understandable when you think of it in Ash's eyes, Yut Lung is just REALLY not capable of doing that. They are two sides of the same coin, yet completely different people, even if they could've ended in eachother's position, they could've never ended in eachothers shoes, yk what i mean?
And Blanca is just so. Neutral. Biased yet unbiased, hateful yet friendly, good yet bad, gentle yet aggressive, and it doesn't even feel fake either. He's just like that, trained by the rules and loyal to the contracts yet at the same time a super biased person toward's Ash. Insane man, insane series, hope nothing bad happens after this!1!!! (Sarcasm.)
Also, he knew he was gonna be taken away, but he spected it to have an ending!! Thats why he asks Ibe to take him, to please take him when its all over.

poor ash.. he just wants to feel loved to the point where he would do anything and kinda “obsess” over it. i hate that some kids actually have to go through this in their life which is so horrible nobody should deserve this at all. great video btw!
That is the most tragic element to me in this series -- that these characters (Sing, Ash, Yut-Lung, Eiji) are all 14-19 years old -- there is no reason for people that young to be going through all of this! :( So sad! I really hate it for Ash this episode...I just want him to be happy! At least he has someone like Eiji and Max in his life rightnow! T_T Thank you for the comment!

Just...Ash knowing he's outmatched, being SO DONE with Golzine and all his nonsense, done with Dragon Moon, and his love for Eiji and desire to protect him -- it's more than his desire to survive at this point. This episode is a mixture of sadness and joy, Ash who wants to protect Eiji and who does not hesitate for a second to shoot himself, Yut-Lung who is jealous of the relationship between Ash and Eiji. Blanca is I think worried about Ash he thinks if he gets too attached to Eiji it’s gonna end up playing against him. All this is very complicated,
but very good video as usual, I’m in a hurry to be next Sunday!

Yesssss, this episode was full of highs and lows! Ash and Eiji have pretty much cemented their relationship at this point and the fact that he's willing to do ANYTHING to save Eiji is so beautiful but sad, especially what he has to give up to do so. And yes, Blanca believes Eiji will end up being Ash's downfall, but we all have seen what good Eiji does for Ash and his humanity...so it's so sad. And Dragon Moon....ahhh, our jealous Yut Lung! i think when Ash asked Ibe to take him to japan when everything was "over" he might've been basically asking that when he dies could he be taken to japan to be buried or if hes cremated have his ashes there

And here it is: my favorite episode. I totally agree with you. This episode definitely feels like the turning point of the show. You better prepare yourself. It’s gonna be a hell of a ride from here on out.
I remember, when I first watched this episode, I had to pause and rewind because I didn’t realize Ash had already pulled the trigger. It’s incredible to me that he acted without any hesitation at all. It just goes to show what he would do for Eiji. They really have a beautiful relationship and, even though I don’t want Ash to kill himself (obviously), it was an amazing moment.
I also adore the domesticity in this episode. The whole beginning sequence was peak comedy. 👌🏻 I love these two so much. 🥺 Please let them be happy!!! 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻

Anyway, I was wondering if you’d consider reacting to SK8 The Infinity. It’s a currently-airing anime about skateboarding. There’re only 4 episodes out and I’m already obsessed. 👌🏻 The animation is great and I love the characters/character designs (the plot is really cool too). It comes out on Saturdays at 2:00 am JST.
The director of this show also directed Banana Fish (you’ll see many parallels to BF) and Free, so we’re all hyped about it. 😆

I was floored with the warehouse scene. It's definitely straight up love at this point. And damn, Ash would give up everything for Eiji, and I'm pretty sure the feeling's mutual. UGH. The FEELS in this episode!! Definitely amazing moments throughout all this episode!
Blanca is so complicated already, and Yut Lung's character is beyond fascinating -- even after all these episodes with him, we just keep peeling back the layers with him! I cannot get a read on him and that makes me very nervous going into these next few episodes.
And.....haha...uhm. So. Sk8 the Infinity is on the Run With the Wind replacement poll, too. I'll be honest. I really REALLY want it to win, but we shall see. Bwahahahaa, I have seen a few stills on Twitter of it and it's IMMEDIATELY grabbed my attention. And it's by the director of Banana Fish, you say? AND FREE?! Well... hm. Hm. HM. I'll not say anything to sway anyone, but I'll be rooting for it, haha!

Ooh! I’m glad SK8 is an option! 😆 I watched it like 2-3 days ago becuase some of my friends told me it was a good show. I pulled up the first episode and was like, “I’ll just leave the tab open and come back to it later,” but then the first 5 seconds played and I binged all of it. 😂 It captivated me right from the start.

@@RomaniaBlack Also, Blanca is a very interesting character in my opinion. When I first watched this, I never thought I would come across Ash's teacher, but it was definitely a good plot twist! At first, it was kind of hard deciding how I felt about Blanca because I felt like he wants what's best for Ash since he mentored him and was probably somewhat of a father figure towards him, but I also didn't like that he wanted him to go back to Dino. Later on though, I started to warm up to him more.
It will be very interesting to see what your thoughts of him are as you continue watching!
@@mallikaanand7917 I never expected us to have such a major player this late in the game for the show, but WHAT a player he is -- I think it's a great move on the creator's part to introduce us to Ash's teacher. We've all put Ash on a pedestal this series for the tricks and moves he's been able to do to survive and fight -- and then in this one episode see him cower and be powerless is SUCH a move...and such a twist. Blanca being a "true neutral" player definitely has me thinking and having ideas, but I want to see the next episode before I get into them. Ash has had a lot of "father figures" -- both good and bad -- though for me, Max is the best figure for him, oddly enough, haha! I'm excited to see how my thoughts on Blanca develop!

Besides the apartment scenes, the gun scene is one of my favorite moments of the episode. The fact that there wasn't even the slightest hesitation 😭 Ash made it clear that, while he wasn't afraid to die, he *never* wished it upon himself. With all the stuff he's gone through, he's had ample opportunity to just roll over or eat a bullet. And up until that point, he's fought tooth and nail to stay alive. Blanka is the main reason he could do that relatively unscathed. Now that same person, same assassin has been sent after the best thing that's happened to him. He knows full well he doesn't even stand a chance against his mentor. He's in full-on panic mode and desperate because Eiji is now essentially a dead man walking.
And then, low and behold, Yut Lung gives him a way to save him.

Ahh, I love that callback you refer to, in episode 13. He has fought hard to survive, but isn't afraid to die. And to die for the person he loves -- the one person who loves him unconditionally back? Yeah, he pulled the trigger without question. T_T And it's so painful seeing Ash in panic mode and being desperate. Ugggh, this episode was hard but also so beautiful. Thank you for the comment!
