GRIM REAPER 1 3/8" Pro Series 100 gr Broadhead Test

- This is a test of the 100 gr Grim Reaper 3 blade 1 3/8" Pro Series Mechanical broadhead.
Here is summary of my 2023 Testing Procedure & Scoring w/the scores of this head posted in parenthesis as well.
Grim Reaper 1 3/8" 100 gr Total Score: 72.84 = 7 Golden Arrows
1. Flight Forgiveness (20%, 20 pts)
This is not just a test of how heads fly out of my bow, as it was in the past. With a well tuned bow, properly built arrows & good form, almost every head flies well. That's why in the past most heads got a flight score of 9 or 10. But that doesn't help those who may not have perfectly tuned bows/arrows/good form. So now I am gauging Flight Forgiveness. This is based on how the head flies for me, how well it spins, how "sensitive" the flight is to imperfections, & the exposed surface area of the blades. The max score of a Mech is 20 & the max score of a Fixed is 16.
2. Cut Size (20%, 12.4 pts)
The more tissue being cut, the more lethal the head, all else equal. The entrance cut, total cut, & width of the cut (a crucial variable for bloodletting) are all scored:
The entrance cut size is compared to a standard of 2.5" then that fraction is weighted to 7% of the score. (.9" = 2.52 pts)
The max cut size is compared to a standard of 2.5" as well, then that fraction is is weighted to 7% of the score. (2.06" = 5.78 pts)
The max cutting diameter is compared to a standard of 2.0", then that fraction is weighted to 6% of the score. (1.375" = 4.1 pts)
3. Blades (20%, 17.85 pts)
Initial sharpness (9%, Mech: 200 grams = 10/10 = 9 pts) & Edge Retention (9%, +75 gram = 8.5/10 = 7.65 pts) are measured using the Edge On Up Sharpness Tester. The pressure needed for a blade to cut thru a copolymer wire is measured in grams.
Edge Retention is the loss of sharpness after the head is shot in Penetration Test 1, thru 1/2" MDF and 2/3" rubber foam mat & Clear Ballistics FBI gel. For every 50 "grams" of sharpness lost, 1 point is deducted from 10.
What are some sharpness scores for common edges?
A butter knife takes 2000 grams of pressure to break the co polymer wire.
A new high end cutlery edge: ~ 375 grams of pressure.
A utility razor blade: 200 grams.
Based on the many broadheads I have tested, here is my scoring scale:
Out of the Box Sharpness:
0-200 gr: 10
201-300 gr 9
301-400 gr: 8
401-500 gr: 7
501-600 gr: 6
601-700 gr: 5
Ease to resharpen or replace blades is judged & given 2% of the score. (6/10=1.2 pts)
4. Penetration (20%, 13.79 pts)
There are 3 penetration tests:
Pen Test 1: 1/2" MDF, 2/3" rubber foam mat, Clear Ballistics FBI gel. Depth of penetration is compared to a standard of 9" & weighted to 9% of the score. (5.75" = 5.75 pts)
Pen Test 2: Layered cardboard. # of layers penetrated is compared to a standard of 70 layers & weighted to 9% of the score.
(47 layers=6.04 pts)
Angled Penetration Test: How effectively does the head penetrate 1/4" MDF covered by carpet at a 45 degree angle. This accounts for 2% of the score. (10/10 = 2 pts)
5. Durability (20%, 7.8 pts)
Each head is shot thru 1/2" MDF 3 times. Its condition is judged 1-10 & weighted to 12% of the score. (5/10 = 6 pts)
If a head survives that, it is then shot thru 22 ga steel plate twice. Its condition is judged 1-10 & weighted to 5% of the score. (NA = 0)
If a head survives that, it is then shot into concrete once. Its condition is judged 1-10 & weighted to 3% of the score. (6/10 = 1.8 pts)
Steel plate & concrete are certainly not "realistic" mediums, but they do reveal the outer limits of a head's durability.

The 125 grain Pro 1-3/8 worked perfectly on a spike I shot last year. 46 yards quartered away, buried in offside shoulder. One blade slightly bent, but no other damage. Craziest blood trail I've had.

I’ve been using grim reaper for years and have never had one fail me. Taken many deer with these heads and most never go longer than 30 yards before dropping. Blood trails have always been excellent as well. I trust them so much I’m scared to try anything else.

Yes!! I was looking through your previous Grim Reaper tests and nothing on the classic 1 3/8” cuts. The 1 3/8” cuts have the best blade angle for penetration.

They have two different blade angles, and you can know the difference cause one uses the black cup and the other uses a silver one.

Just shot a buck yesterday with a 125gr Whitetail Special Extreme, and granted it was 11 yards, that thing was like a laser through him. Lung, liver, wind pipe, half his diaphragm, broke through at least one rib and still stuck in the ground. I could easily sharpen the blades and use it again too. He stumbled all of 50 yards.

Long time Grim Reaper fan boy. I really enjoy your tests. I’ve never had the retention cups fail on game and it’s not a prevalent issue. These durability tests can skew perception, but they are a good format to make comparisons. I’m a big fan of the 1 3/8”

I’ve killed a a pile of deer and a few elk with this broadhead and my 45 lbs set up. It was the best mechanical on the market for years. Better options now .. but for back in the day a great head

@@ryanweidner6828 I have an old neck injury that prevents me from pulling a bunch of lbs. it’s also the reason own 4 mathews no cams. I’m terrified I’ll never have one:) I shoot magnus two blades for elk here in MT. This year I shot a deer with the trifecta 100gr. Last year shot a deer in Oklahoma with the 1 3/8 grim reaper. I’ve found with deer I can get away with a lot even at 48lbs . BUT, for elk I only shoot the magnus 2 blade. I shot one at 43 yards a few years ago through entry side scapula dead center through the soft part. It was downhill and came out just above the elbow on the offside. Great results on elk many times with the Magnus on elk .
I just rewatched video and the retention cup failed after the second shot in the MDF. I wish we could have seen the head in the steel plate. There are some old videos of this head being shot into a steel barrel.
My durability tests are progressive...they have to make it thru MDF one time in order to get a second shot, then a third, then the steel plate once, then twice.
The old school gr’s were different pal. I remember my first pack! They are not made or owner by the same company anymore… I believe.

I shoot the fatal steel version with excellent results. Entry hole is small but every Deer dies quickly

@@bbmopar3834bthe ferrule is all 1 piece steel and will not break like the one tested but the blades and collar will most likely be similar results to the one tested. Almost all are pass throughs including breaking ribs on both sides of deer with only an occasional broken blade. Even drove one into off side shoulder with only one blade partially breaking. No lost deer and most pass throughs no damage. However, we switched to SEVR because of Lusk testing and very pleased so far. My son shot from 25' up at a doe just a few yards from his stand and spined her. SEVR 1.5 completely demolished her and she expired on the spot quickly. SEVR perfect condition and would still cut paper!!!!!
Want them to do so well in your test. Have had zero issues on whitetails. But, they are disposable in my opinion. Never shoot anything but new fresh head.

Its weird the picture of the broadhead looks like the blades are swept back much more than in your test. Are they or is it just me? Because I would prefer to see them swept back more than they were in the test. Thanks John!

To be perfectly honest I’m a Grim Reaper fanboy through and through, i adore their broad heads, but for what Michigan has to offer the whitetail specials work for me. I don’t think i have much reason to use the smaller heads here

I’ve had mixed results with the grim reaper, original not pro. Worked great on a whitetail and mule deer but the ferrule snapped in half on an elk rib. Fortunately it was the far rib so still a fatal shot. Are there any 3 or 4 blade mechanicals that are better?
Only other 3 blades that come to mind immediately is Rage has some chisel tip 3 blade but my stepfather used them and they SUCKED. Shot a buck at 25yds and the head bent on the entry side rib and never deployed

If you could only choose one broadhead for whitetail what would it be?
That's a good question. Too many great ones to choose from. It'd be hard to beat a Sevr 1.75.

7075 for the ferrule. The cup is 41L40 tool steel.
Grim reapers are junk. I tried a whitail special pro series. The first deer I shot with the broadhead never passed through ans stopped against the off side ribs. It made a fmj like entry hole. A real deploying head would have made a huge entry at least. Fifteen yard shot at 287 fps and 413 grain total arrow and broadhead combined weight. No blood but the deer dropped within 15 yards. The second deer, a dandy 12 point buck, the broahead opened in flight and planned off. It hit the deer almost sideways and skipped along the ribs and bounced off the armpit. One of the blades cut through all the ribs and slit the lung and liver. It was a 15 yard shot. Found the arrow with the blade deployed and zero blood on it. I couldn't figure out how and why the arrow was laying on the ground with the broahead open and no blood on it. I started walking in the direction the deer ran and found blood! I tracked that deer 3.5 hours and over 500 yards. It traveled 2 blocks down my stream and walked about a 100 yards into some heavy brush and died. It's easy enough to find photos of it. Think all you have to to is Google grim reaper whitetail special fail and you'll find photos of it on predator masters forum. I sent 6:54 photos to Grim reaper. They even told me it definitely opened in flight. Both were shot at 287 fps with a 413 total grain arrow and broadhead combined weight. Probably a great turkey head but I swore off front deploying broad heads after the Grim Reapers. Imo a front deploying blade will defect at angles...just depends how of a severe angle.

Might be ok on a turkey but it can't be trusted on deer ribs or scapula. 1 guy in our party killed a nice smaller buck with the very similar Grim Reaper Fatal steel. However the blades were bent just hitting meat & lung. He also had to use small rubber bands to keep the blade from deploying prematurely as the velocity of the crossbow would open them in flight occasionally.
