I love the fact if the main character had shown any decency and asked the lady where she was going, maybe they could share, she would have ended up in a cab ride with this super important broadway lady and had time to chat her up and probably seal her career in the other direction.

Same thing happened to be, but it was when I was in first grade, and it was my school teacher. It made the rest of my childhood so much more difficult than it had to be because I felt SO inferior to everyone else. I was so painfully shy, it made it so I had an incredibly difficult time making friends. Heck, I was even diagnosed with Asperger’s and put on a few different antidepressants/anti-anxiety meds as a teenager. It was a complete misdiagnosis, as I eventually developed my social skills to an acceptable level.
No one who knows me now would ever guess all of this was true about me. But yeah, I suspect it largely boiled down to me having been traumatized by my teacher.

1st, that girl actually is deaf. I'm surprised her mom was ok with what Sofia's character said in the movie (or maybe she wasn't). 2) My daughter is HoH, and had 3 fully deaf kids on her cheerleading squad. If Sofia's character knew literally ANYTHING about dance, she would know that you dance in counts, and they don't need to be able to hear the music. Someone completely dropped the ball with that one. It was pretty abelist, tbh. Just wanted to point that out 😄

Has anyone from the writing team ever been involved with dance at all? Ugh! I'd eveb bet the girl's mom told them but they were too lazy to rewrite any of the script because how could they get away with ableist remarks otherwise?

Maybe it was to add to the main character being ridiculously insufferable, and also for people who have that thought to understand that deaf/HOH people can dance. It seems to me like the movie treats the kids as props just like April does in her first dance with them. It doesn't care about the deaf girl, or Ruby wanting to dance, or Sarah and her grief or her chicken cutlet, they're only there so that April can "earn" her redemption by helping the team, so once April gets her life in New York and her boyfriend back, the movie doesn't need them anymore and just drops them.

    • @kristenlandon796
      @kristenlandon796 ปีที่แล้ว +44

My thought was like the world only revolves around April and she gets rewarded for “coming back” -a tiny step in the right direction- but not owning up to her problems or growing up, to say the least.

A dad being involved in his children’s lives…it is the bare minimum. It is nice to see it portrayed in a movie instead of the norm (absent/uninterested fathers and extreme dance moms)…I could just do w/o the implication that the dads are somehow superior parents for doing what Jaime said…being invested in the lives of their children they’re raising 🙄🤷🏽‍♀️

I wouldn't be surprised if Sofia Carson had a requirement in her contract that doesn't allow her to be (or be seen as) the bad person in movies. Like how Vin Diesel and The Rock have that demand in their contracts where they can't lose in a movie they're in.

I honestly like the fact that April has no empathy for anyone, because it's realistic. I had a dance teacher in school that really didn't like me for some reason, and she always ignored how hard I tried and shoved me in the back for no one to see. I like this movie because I find it really funny, but the whole section with those little girls twerking reminded me so much of that one Dance Mom's dance, which was lowkey *really* gross and didn't need to be included in the movie, like you said, it had no actual plot and it was for humor, but it doesn't make it any less weird. I really like this movie though because I like how we get to see the girls actually improve, but my main issue with it are the scene cuts. I re-watched it not too long ago and I noticed how weird the cuts are. One minute they're at some minor competition and the next they're at this big-league dance competition? It makes no sense, but I get why a lot of people didn't like this movie. But I like the whole story because April (kind of) improves her behavior and begins to be a role model for the kids. I'm biased though, because I love the whole scene where Dicky does the dance with them even though he wasn't a part of the team, and how he was the one being lifted in that one scene and his dad was really proud. I also like how that little girl who worked at the dance studio got to resolve things with her mum, I liked the whole "plot twist" that her mum didn't know about it because I didn't expect that when I first watched, but it made sense that she used to forge the letters so she could go to the competitions because I knew girls who had to do that because their parents didn't know what it was. I do agree though about the whole dad's 'being painted in a better lighting' because one of the directors DEFO had daddy issues whilst writing it, or they're just misogynistic.

YES! The cuteness of the dads’ support strikes viewers are special because it’s considered unfamiliar or abnormal in the tea world, but you are precisely right- it should be normal! Still special but not unusual. It didn't happen much but it happened more than it should cause it shouldn't happen at all. I understand the unlikable/unrelatable/terrible MC but usually halfway or towards the end, we used to have those MCs be redeemed or learnt their lessons. amazing that the writers couldn't decide between the token sassy friend, token black friend, or token gay friend so they just put all three in the same character.

Jaime, you are so talented in making us laugh our butts off and then bursting out the angelic vocals to pierce into our souls. Too. Much. Greatness. 💘

I love that you covered this because I def started this movie (I remember her knocking the studio woman off the stage) but I stopped because it was soooo bad, too bad that it wasn't at all good and the main character seemed like a total cunt- but watchibf it through YOU is actually entertaining and fun! And you confirmed why I am so happy I never continued watched it- and even more proud that I ended it to early on! 😂

Literally my experience in dance class was that of Ruby. I quit dance when I was a kid cause the kids I was with AND THE TEACHER laughed at me all the time. Sucks. Very accurate movie in that respect.

Ok before I fully watch this, I actually was out of work due to the virus and I was a singer who’s career was on halt and in another city and I knew I would have to go back to my small hometown in Alabama…so yeah I cried at the end and it kept me laughing, and believing in a brighter day. Now I’m ready to listen to your review 😂😂😂

The sound effects in your videos during dance or montage scenes, where I'm assuming you can't play music from the movie, always crack me up! The classics like farts and cracking bones, but also the random voice over funny breaths or comments of the characters. 🤣 Kudos to you and your team. *insert cheesy movie slow clap here*

As someone who grew up in California and was forced to the Midwest in my teen years... that dance teacher is not entirely unrealistic, lol... that was a pretty good portrayl of a lot of the culture I ran into. And I mean, I love cheese, but that scene where she's eating that huge chunk of cheese made me loose my s&&t laughing (and almost choking) cuz I was literally eating a slice of cheese, lol.

Why doesn't anyone making a movie ever do any research on how evictions actually work, because they're always wrong, and this depiction definitely isn't it.

I can’t even begin to explain how I LOST MY MIND when I saw Miss Barb. She’s Pam in Crazy Ex-Girlfriend and is absolutely hilarious. Definitely my favorite character. I don’t know if you’ve ever seen that show but she’s incredible in it. And no, please don’t take this is “HOW DO YOU NOT KNOW WHO THAT IS.” Because it’s not. 🥺 It’s “I know her. She’s funny. You should check her out.” 🥰

Woah ok. When I was a kid a chunk of the ceiling of my dance studio actually did collapse. A girl got hit on the head and we had to switch buildings. This feels like the most insane deja vu.

Movie was definitely cliche at best! However, there was one part that had me rolling!
    April: "There's no syncopation."
Little Girl: "Why can't the sink go on vacation?"
This one line was hilarious! 😂

So funny because I actually watched this whole movie, and had all of these thoughts. It's so bad. But...the teacher feature with the flowers...when I got to that part I went searching for who did the choreo because I just KNEW that vibe. MIA MICHAELS choreographed this! I love MIA MICHAELS. Why! Why did she do this!
