I think it's because there is a lot of cultural differnces in the way of treating subject like weed for exemple. Where in the franch version it's just an information on the mom and the fact that her and her daughter don't share EVERYTHING. In the american version there the NEED to make it important because smoking pot CANNOT be thrown just like that without an explanation that smoking is bad. A lot of the things that were light and breezy was lost in translation and way heavier in the american version. Here in france the version is the representation of a generation. Not absolutely accurate of course but I was a teenager at the time and I recognize myself and my friends at the time in a lot of details in the french version. The american version is less "personnal" sort of. More generic.

This is extremely common in most teenage movies and shows. Most of the actors are well in their 20’s. And yeah, it makes certain storylines that are actually really bad irl seem normal. Like teacher/student relationships and relationships with big age gaps. This is the type of movie you have to watch when you’re in high school. I loved it as a teenager, but not so much as an adult. I went to a performing arts school, and I found it to be a refreshing break from the more “critically acclaimed” indie films that were popular within the arts community at that time. It was simple, sweet, and weirdly close to how my high school experience was. We had the underground battle of the bands that we got wasted at, we went on a Greece/Italy trip, we had a post it note girl; I loved this film. Opinions aside, this movie was literally the movie that molded my style and motivated me to be closer with my mom and friends. I liked the coming of age aspect. It was also a good movie to show how stupid adults can be when they’re still young, and that everyone fucks up, you just have to take them for who they are. It’s cheesy and gross yeah but HOLY SHIT is it a fucking past time. Like everyone should rewatch it and actually look at the underlying pattern of “don’t judge on first glance.”

I can't stand Miley's voice, speaking and otherwise. It's not hate. I don't hate her. But there's just something about her voice. It's like nails on a chalkboard. Maybe cuz it sounds like an AI voice? IDK.

I worked as a French TA at an American College, and we showed the French version to the students and they loved it. I'm French myself and must say that the french version depicts a french teenager's life quite accurately. The original version is quite popular actually. And it is still more or less accurate, aside from the haircuts and the social media, everything in this movie still works. It's sad they decided to make a remake instead of just dubbing the original version

One could argue that the American version depicted American teenage life quite accurately, too.

I remember watching this movie on my friends phone 10 years ago, against the wall on the fitness room floor during our highschool class. We never participated 😂 totally forgot about this buried Miley gem that made me want to cut my hair short and go ombre. Those were the days lol🙌🏻

I really liked this movie tbh. I really wanted this to be my life when I was a teenager but I was a socially awkward outcast with no friends 😊 I still find the movie to be a vibe but I get how it is bad technically.

no i cannot stress how BADLY i wanted to see this movie, i was 11 when it came out and im autistic so i was (and still am) very rigid about following rules.
even when i wasnt with my parents i was not trying to see movies i couldnt see until i was like 15 💀
that being said, i waited until i was 13, 14, 15, somewhere around there to watch it with my grandmother when we did movie nights together.
we turned it off less than halfway through 😭 i was so disappointed

(French person with dual culture here) Honestly I think some of the pseudo-French bohemia "culture" got lost in translation, considering it was copy-pasted from the original. It was BS to start with, but it wasn't made for US sensibilities. I'm thinking of the bathroom/bathtub scene for ex, or parents smoking weed more or less in front of their kids (although I'm aware it's a thing in the States). And as for the weirdo French family, that's both creepy and a mix of backwards wtf clichés, on top of that they would be coded as scary royalists/traditionalists/right-wing nuts to French people.
Oh and I haven't seen the original, it looked almost as dumb.

Love it, all your movie reviews are absolute comedic gold! I remember when this film came out and I did watch the first 40mins and then I had to switch it off. It's not a good film and Miley probably just did it to fulfill some contractual obligation.

Britney Ever After will be by far the most difficult movie to watch. Her fan base was SUPER excited that it was coming, but they were furious with how awful every aspect was. Straight disrespectful to Britney Spears. Now would be a good time because she has a single coming out with Elton John.
