You guys have no idea what it was like when this song came out in '87. It was INSANE. It played everywhere. MTV had it on hourly rotation -- back when MTV was cool and actually played music videos. Every car that drove by was bumping it. It was a massive, massive hit. I miss the 80s.

Slash is phenomenal. Sadly, Izzy never got the credit he deserved for being a great rhythm guitarist. Thankfully Slash always acknowledged him.

Slash is just unreal. He’s so great at phrasing, building tension, working towards that explosive FIRE crescendo, etc. Amazing.
Add to that his tone and how it sits in the mix. He uses the bass pickup to start to create that “full & round” sound, then switches to the treble pickup and gets that amazing, cutting tone. Just brilliant.
Sweet Child, Paradise City, and Welcome to the Jungle are all from the same album “Appetite for Destruction” (1987; their first album & the best-selling debut album of all time) & November Rain is from the album “Use Your Illusion I” (1991).

The best song you almost never heard. Welcome to the Jungle was released as a single in 1987 and MTV/radio blacklisted GNR. About a year later Geffin Records had stopped promoting the album completely when GNRs manager begged David Geffin to call in a favor at MTV. They agreed to play it ONCE after midnight on a Sunday. MTV was inundated with requests and that's the how legends are made.

Love Axl’s vocals and Slash is so amazingly talented. But theirs a band here. Duff’s base and Izzy’s rhythm are stunning, while accompanying Slash’s solo. Honestly, I don’t agree that a guitar solo is truly a solo, when there are 3 guitars. IMO!!! Although, Steven wasn’t their drummer much after the first album, Steven was a huge part of the heartbeat of the band. But most of all, they all sing back up vocals. Their concerts were jammed with music and it was nonstop. You will find most successful bands have at least five members. Lead guitar and base but the rhythm guitar or keyboard complete the finesse of the track. Journey, Def Leppard, Rolling Stones, Aerosmith, Whitesnake, Deep Purple, Bon Jovi, Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band, Skid Row…. The list goes on. There are live versions of all the GNR songs you’ve done. My generation had radio and concerts. Live performance was crucial to a band’s credibility. No auto tune, no lip sync. Just sheer talent. In this regard, my generation was the luckiest ever. Rock, Pop, Old School Rap, New Wave, Punk, Folk…. 60s, 70s and 80s ruled music and always will.

Appetite for destruction is a phenomenal album and for me this is the stand out, one of the greatest songs of all time! Not only is slashes solo amazing but the iconic opening melodic riff is some of the best if not THE best recorded Les Paul tone I’ve ever heard! And Axl’s vocals and lyrics fit so perfectly with the upbeat riff. And to me is Izzys rhythm guitar, Duffs bass, and especially Adler‘s drumming made this album as well. Slash has said the band got so much better and tighter after they booted Adler… maybe they did get tighter, but clearly not better. to me, they lost all of that great swagger from the first album after Stephen left! I remember this album when it was hitting hard on the radio can’t believe it’s 35 freaking years ago!

The only comment I have about cutting down a song is that if they can play all of Bohemian Rhapsody, then they can play all of any song.
Yes, with the exception of November Rain, all three songs are from their debut album Appetite for Destruction. I don't think you can fully appreciate this album unless you were aware of it when it came out. You won't find a bigger David Lee Roth era Van Halen fan then me, but when this album came out, I was literally blown away. Heavy guitars, full bass, killer drums and this ginger haired skinny dude with tatts singing in a way I'd never heard before. I mean who opens the first song on their debut album with a war cry long ass scream? Axel Rose from Gus -N - Roses. Talk about grabbing your attention. The whole album is just fire. There's a reason it's the fastest selling debut album of all time. But it's every member of the band. Axel Rose, Slash, Duff McKagan (I highly recommend his book "It's so easy and other lies"), Izzy Stradlin, and Steven Adler, that gets the credit. Having said that if you really want to appreciate Slash's playing, listen or better yet react to "Anastasia" from his solo Apocalyptic Love album.
Sorry this was so long. The 80's were really the best time to grow up. We simply had the best music.
p.s. a note on the "where do we go?" lyrics. Axel simply couldn't think of anything to write. So, he asked the band where do we go from here? Then just decided to use that as the rest of the song. At least that's my understanding of it.
Okay. Now I'm done. I promise.

Axl's tone and phrasing toward the end of the tune is like a feedback driven electric guitar.

GnR's manager is Alan Niven who also manages the band Great White who y'all need to check out. Rock Me, Once bitten, twice shy, The Angel Song, and The Big Goodbye would be a great jumping off point.

Description of Slash's guitar/solos for me...he's the second vocalist. He doesn't 'riff' he Sings his parts. Incredible.

Song definitely consists of some good hooks and great guitar solo. I can see why it was so popular. Many times radio versions of songs cut out great parts of the songs, namely instrumentals.

The song that blew up and rocketed GnR into the stratosphere. The great thing about songs like this is that it has a great groove that you can move bang your head to, and has an edge to it so that it’s not pop cheese.

I remember going to a sweet 16 party back in early 1988 where the birthday girl got the Appetite for Destruction album on CD. I never heard of Guns n Roses before. I was into Iron Maiden, Dio, Ozzy, etc. I had no idea what I was witnessing at that celebration!

Geez - cutting a Slash solo is like auto-tuning Axl Rose’s rasp, high notes, screams, and balladeer voice. DON’T DARE DO THAT! Listen to the rhythm guitar behind Slash! Epic!
