I was never a big Abba fan, and I wasn’t too wild about disco, but this is truly a masterpiece. No matter what kind of venue you went to on a Friday or Saturday night, sooner or later this song would play and every girl in the crowd would dance to it. It was a beautiful thing to behold. Every single one of them was a Dancing Queen for a few minutes. ❤😊

Dancing Queen is like euphoria in a bottle that has just been shaken and uncorked.
I think a good follow up to this would be "Voulez Vous" and "Lay all your love on me" both classic ABBA disco anthems.

I was 15 and on a funny little cruise ship off Greece somewhere. At that time, everything was very Greek with little to no American influence. It was 1977. We were dressed up and headed down to the disco to drink and dance (because there was no drinking age over there then!) As we walked into the disco, this song was playing!!! We were filled with excitement and took over the dance floor! Every time I hear it, I'm 15 again!

ABBA’s music never fails to put a smile on your face. You’re probably right when you mention they have a ‘feel good vibe’ because many of their songs make you feel that way.
Frida and Agnetha are great singers on their own and when they sing together it’s just pure magic. Many agree they ARE what make the ABBA sound. You’ve listened to a couple songs with Agnetha as lead so I suggest listening to one of Frida’s like “Super Trouper” or “Money, Money, Money” next. 😁

When I think of ABBA and Dancing Queen, it's the very song that describes the mid '70s for me. Baseball Cap with the hair winging out from the sides, wide leg jeans (Brittania & San Francisco Jeans ) short sleeve shirt, with a collar. For the Gals, wide leg jeans, halter tops, long straight hair parted in the middle. Roller skating at the skating rink and Dancing Queen👍🔥💯

  • @p.m.6064

These different instruments coming in and out during the verses is because Benny has repeatedly said that there must not be empty parts in a pop song. If there are parts where there are no vocals than something else has to be there. If you listen to ABBA, you’ll find that every gap without vocals there is something else is going on. And that makes their songs sound so tight.

Growing up as a teenager in the 70's I was pretty much a heavy metal/hard rock fan. My 8 track tape collection was pretty extensive, but had some Eagles, Supertramp, America, other lighter artists in the mix....but also had a few ABBA tapes and wore those out as much as any of the rest. And none of my fellow metal heads ever complained when I played them. Back in those days out in the country we would have parties in garages and barns or just in the house, and when ABBA was played it was pretty much dance time.

a separate comment, to answer your questions about which or which are the most popular or recognized songs of ABBA
It is difficult to give an exact parameter, because this varies according to the place and the time.
E.g. "Fernando" is their biggest hit in Australia, while "Chiquitita" is in Latin America
    I think for history
"Waterloo" for being the winner of Eurovision
"Dancing Queen" for their worldwide success
"Thank you for the music" for being an anthem
and after ABBA breakup in 1982,
in the 90s "Mamma Mia" stands out for the movies and musicals
    and in the new millennium
"Gimme gimme gimme (a man after midnight) by Madonna's sample on her hit "Hung Up"
and "The winner takes it all"
voted by the brits as their best song
I hope you continue like this with your reactions to ABBA's songs, you are very entertaining and make a great musical analysis, and they complement each other very well
and how you talked about doing reactions to ABBA live (there are fantastic performances of their tours filmed in Australia 1977 and London 1979)
It would be nice if you started with ABBA's victory in Eurovision 1974 with Their iconic "Waterloo"
that performance in full competition against 16 other songs from Europe is historic, where the legend of ABBA is born
I send you a big hug from
    Buenos Aires Argentina
    South America

One of my favorite ABBA songs. They truly had a distinct sound and very much in the 70's, my era.

And listening to these two songbirds singing without autotune. It sounds SO much better than most.

When it came out I was 16 left school, hot summer and it was perfect to fit my mood, as soon as the song starts it's like being swept away on a wave of a feel good perfect emotion, their best song imo.

    Hi guys 🙂
This record is what most most people think of when you mention ABBA and it is one of their records that is mostly requested, but their biggest selling single in their catalogue is actually "Fernando" it sold over 10 Million world wide, Their Album sales to date is over 400 Million making them the 2'nd best selling artist in music history, looking forward to you next ABBA reaction 🤪

Every time this song came on in the disco clubs in the 70’s everyone hit the floor. It was a disco anthem

The instrumentation is so good, always love the piano or electric piano that Benny played, always attracted me when I lisent Abba music, love the harmonies and love when both women sing together, both are great singers but that unique sound of both voices is an Abba sound. And I love that the autfits are totaly 70s, and their looks too, Benny and Bjørn hair

I hadn’t thought about it before until you mentioned it, but it is probably assumed by your generation that this was their top hit because the play and then the movies came out with that name. Mamma Mia was just the name that the Broadway play creators choose to name the show that was created based on many, many ABBA songs. And then the movie version of the play came out. It IS the name of one of their songs but not necessarily the most popular. At least that was not a song that DJs normally played in the discos that I went to. 😊
