I think Kashmir is the better song -- the integration of South Asian music with the hard rock is just masterful.
Stairway to Heaven is, arguably, the greatest rock song ever written, but Kashmir creates something utterly unique.

The live version is a downer. Plant messes up the ‘Rock and not to roll’ bit and Paige fumbles the start of the guitar solo.
@@andrewmorton9327 I guess Page, who was an incredible guitarist, was just drinking often much to much and played, performed on stage really drunk and so he was more stumbling on the stage and often missing the strings when playing and also missing the right note, tone or chord.

The magic of this song is: no matter what mood I'm in, when this song comes on I always sing along to the end. Nothing matters while this song is playing.
I'm 56 years old and this song STILL gives me chills everytime I listen to it.
As most will mention, HEART did a tribute to this song for LED ZEPPELIN in attendance at the KENNEDY CENTRE, and one of the finest cover tributes ever, that brings a tear to most who watch that performance. Definitely needs to be seen and reviewed.
This is the live version I'd suggest, for all the reasons you mentioned. I love what they did with the song, and the whole context of the performance adds so much weight to it, including the reactions of Page, Plant and JPJ in the audience. Just beautiful.
So much this :) I've watched the Heart tribute so many times and I still get a lump in my throat... at least. Heart, John's son, LZ reactions in the crowd, the perfect performance, pfffff... Wow.

I am usually not too excited about other singers taking such masterpiece but HEART tribute to LED ZEPPELIN is taking it to a unique level.
Its the mighty Led Zeppelin. They were rock n roll alchemists and magicians. They were only around 10 years but their impact on rock music is something akin to a large meteorite striking the Earth. They left a huge impression that's still being felt today.

"Immigrant Song", "Whole Lotta Love", "Black Dog", "Ramble On", "Kashmir", "When The Levee Breaks", “Dazed & Confused”, “Since I’ve Been Loving You”, "Rock & Roll", "The Ocean", "Over The Hills & Far Away", "The Song Remains The Same", "The Rain Song", "Good Times Bad Times" etc.

I can't believe anyone under 50 has never heard this song. It's a staple of classic rock stations everywhere and is at the top of almost every classic rock playlist.
Songs like this can't be interrupted. React afterwards, just enjoy the song in its entirety and immerse yourself in the joy of the song. Interrupting takes away from enjoying the gradual build up of the eventual climax. An absolute masterpiece.
A true rock fan can be walking through a mall, our other public venue, hear the first few cords of this amazing song and stop in his/her tracks to revel in the musical journey. Just a timeless classic.
Arguably the best rock song ever. I was so lucky to have grown up as so many amazing bands were really at the peak of their artistry. I know everyone says that the music of their generation is the best music, but my generation can provide the proof with music like this.
John Bonham the drummer is not just the percussions, he has a sense of groove, a musicality, that makes him one of those rare drummers that add to the melody.
The hardest thing to do for most all of you guys and girls doing these reaction videos is to put yourselves in the time frame. this album came out in 1971, you have had 50 years of music since this. At the time, this was groundbreaking, no one had ever made music like this. And, like the Beatles, Led Zeppelin kicked open doors as to how rock music could be made, what instruments could be used, what songs could be written about. My father refused to let any Beatles albums be played while he was home. Rock and Roll was a fad, it couldn't last, it could not stand the test of time. Well, ha ha. Because of the Beatles, and Led Zeppelin, and a few others, Rock and Roll can never die. There is a reason Led Zep is considered one of the most influential bands of all time., 4 of the greatest musicians, all in one band. Jimmy Page is one of the first 3 guitar "gods" of the 60's, along with Jeff Beck and Eric Clapton, no one has ever had a voice like Robert Plant, the "prince of peace", (1973, Golden Gate Park, Neal Preston Photo, Robert and the white dove, true story) and Jonesy and Bonzo, well, just listen.

In the Netherlands we have something similar in our biggest radio station called the top 2000. People can vote for the best songs and they will play them from 2000 to #1 in the last week of the year. It almost always ends with Bohemian Rhapsody or Hotel California, but stairway to heaven is always a top 10 song.
In my opinion, it is usually better to check out studio versions first. Even when good live performances exist there are aspects to studio performances that can’t be matched.

@@vinniedixon1140 For many years queen was my second favorite band after Zeppelin. Very creative and very diverse, but in my opinion, no more than Zeppelin. Both of those bands as well as the Beatles evolved extremely quickly and had a wide range of musical styles and for that reason are three of the greatest and most creative bands of all time.

Hearing this song in my music room in 1972 was on another level. The greatest band of all time.
Heart did a cover of this at the Kennedy Center with John Bonham's song on the drums and Page, Plant and Jones in the audience and those 3 remaining band members cheered and gave Heart a standing ovation. You should watch that.

Oh, that's a recorder in the beginning. Live John Paul Jones would play the mellotron, later it would be a synthesizer, to get some of the orchestral parts.
Might I also suggest Heart covering this song at the Kennedy Center Honors for Led Zeppelin.

Me too, I was 13 when this came out, a great time to be alive, and young, we had this and Pink Floyd, The Who, Queen, Bad Company, BTO, Rod Stewart, Elton John, The Moody Blues and many others, the preferred method of listening of course was to pass the wine and/or beer with a good cheap joint in a semi dark basement, for about $20 you could get 6 or 7 people wasted, it was glorious.

The fact, that up to this day people argue about, if it is worth the hype, makes it worth the hype. As long as people talk about it, it's still relevant and people over more than one generation read their own meaning in the lyrics of it. THAT makes it worth it. One of the greatest songs ever.

This song is the ultimate slow burn. It starts so gently and builds so gradually, you don't notice it at first. And later, when you think it's built as far as it can, it keeps finding a new level.
One of the keys to the "building of the song" as you kept mentioning is that the tempo increases throughout the song. This is incredibly unusual for most popular music and was the key to the power of this song. I've seen Jimmy Page describe this and how it was intentional when he wrote it. What is more incredible is that Robert wrote the lyrics in about half an hour and threw in bits and pieces of Tolkien references which were common in his lyrics in the early 70's. Good reaction. It was thoughtful and not just OMG! which gets so old. Nice to know you really listened.
I’ll never forget way back when how cool it was when I first heard Plant singing about how “Gollum, the evil one, crept up and slipped away with her-er…”!! Or “‘Twas in the darkest depths of Mordor, I met a girl so fair…”

Just never walk in to a guitar shop and play "Stairway to Heaven" 🤣 I had a Stairway to Heaven fabric poster/flag hanging in my bedroom as a teenager and this is one of the first songs my Dad taught me to play on guitar. One the GREATEST songs of all time. The instruments you were referring to were flutes. I was in high school in the late 70's and I had a Literature teacher that taught this song as poetry for meaning. Needless to say, we LOVED that teacher!

When I got my first job in high school in the mid-'70's (as a restaurant dishwasher), I took one of my first paychecks and splurged on my first four rock albums: the "White Album" by the Beatles, Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon, Black Sabbath's Paranoid and Led Zeppelin IV, which has this song on it. In other words, I was a typical, long-haired "dazed and confused" 1970's kid. I'm a dazed and confused 64 y.o. now, but I still love this song, despite the fact that it was played 8 million times on FM radio throughout my teenage years. This is one of those songs it matters not what some think because history is already written.
You need to see the live version at Madison Square Garden in 1973 which is the year I saw them which was the very first live concert I ever went to, and I sat 7 rows center stage I was 18 years old.. common sense lol tells me I was cool at 12 when this band came out and I fell in love with them

You know I was at that show at MSG 1973 and its the iconic live performance... but come on, the studio version is pure perfection in every way and MUST be heard first by a new listener always!... Jimmy's solo is likely the best guitar solo ever recorded and Robert's vocals from two years earlier when he still had all his range are off the chain amazing... in my humble opinion of course!

@@EdA1 I agree with you. This is one of the few songs in the Zep catalogue that they couldn’t improve live. The production of this song, and all of its brilliant instrumental subtlety, Page’s famous solo, and Plant’s best recorded vocal, couldn’t be duplicated. I always thought Page’s live version of the solo sounded more noodling than his usual live play in the early 70s. Fun fact: the 6 string neck of Jimmy’s SG doubleneck that he used live didn’t have a cutaway on the top notes so he couldn’t do that famous last repeated figure in the solo live! It just never sounded quite as good. But still awesome!
@@Dan-zq5wt agreed! I figured I might get murdered by someone if I agree that his live solo has great moments but there is quite a bit of noodling going on. But hey, that was Jimmy live and he had every right to go off to another world, and just do his thing… and yeah he couldn’t hit that last high note, not because of the cutaway, but because the doubleneck has 20 frets and the telecaster that he used in the studio has 21… I saw them first time June 14, 1972 and then the second time July 29, 1973 at the Garden. I feel they did hit their creative peak from 72 to 73. But my favorite era for Zeppelin both in the studio and live was 70 to 71. the power in there playing, the fluidity and tone of Jimmys playing and the incredible vocals of Plant can’t be topped. And the fourth album was created and recorded at that time and is an absolute masterpiece!

You should definitely watch Stairway to Heaven Led Zeppelin - Kennedy Center Honors live preformence. Its a tribute to Led Zeppelin with them attending the audience. Although obviously preformed not by them but it's done so amazingly well and honestly one of the most powerful live performances you can watch for this masterpiece of a song.
Those lush, shimmering chords on the 12-string are the most beautiful sounds Jimmy Page ever got from a guitar. Now turn the record over and go for “When the Levee Breaks.” An old blues from the 30s, also played on the 12-string. It’s the darkest, angriest sound Page ever got from a guitar.
How could you have never heard "Stairway to Heaven?" That still blows my mind.
Absolutely worth all the hype. The Library of Congress inducted STH to be preserved for future generations!!! Zeppelin are the absolute GOAT!!! Trailblazers for multiple genres. Zeppelin did it all & better than anyone. Badass Rock Gods!!!!

I liked your reaction - and let me add something to your thoughts on this song: most modern songs follow a simple format - you have the first stanza, usually followed by a short lull, then the 2nd stanza, then the first chorus, then a 3rd stanza and then you repeat the chorus. At that point, most songs will just repeat the chorus several times before ending. What makes this song amazing is that there is no chorus. Rather the song follows the traditional 3 Act structure of storytelling. Remember - Western literature embraces Aristotle's 3 Act play structure: Act 1: The Introduction; Act 2 Conflict; Act 3 Resolution. This song is so beautiful because it flows like a play. In Act 1 you have only vocals and simple guitar as we learn about the empty materialism of our flawed protagonist, in Act 2 the drums are introduced as we are told that empty materialism can never give us fulfillment and that there is so much beauty in the natural world outside the realm of man's wealth; and here's my interpretation - in Act 3 our protagonist fails to learn life's lessons as she insulates herself at her final moments of life with her wealth, believing that her wealth can give her eternal happiness. She is wrong but she will never learn nor change her ways. This song is a tragedy. It reads like a Greek tragedy. Brilliant lyrics, music and structure - all combined. That's why this song is often thought of as the greatest rock song every. That's my 2 cents. I'm glad you reacted to it and thanks for sharing. I enjoyed it.
A Rock Classic!
Led Zeppelin was my first concert. Great memories
LZ had so many wonderful songs. When the Levee Breaks, Misty Mountain Hop, Kashmir, Houses of the Holy, The Rover, In My Time of Dying. You could find gems in all their records. When John Bonham passed away the group decide to disband, as the foundation that the drummer gave to the group just wasn't there and they knew a replacement wouldn't work. Though only active for 12 to 13 years, they made a lasting impression.
Just go thru all the albums in chronological order and react to each and every song. LZ doesn't have any bad songs.
I get chills every time as we hit the outro section. The line “when all are one and one is all” is so profound! There are so many things in the world that show us the Truth of that, but we are nonetheless blind to the implications of it. Reticent to live the Truth of it. If everyone held that concept in their hearts and minds daily we would be so much better off as a species! I think the writing of this song was inspired by the divinity present in all of us, though the band may say otherwise. That’s probably what inspiration is, at it’s core, anyway.
Perhaps the best rock song of all time / iconic and masterful! Zeppelin 4 album is a masterpiece from beginning to end. I’m blessed to have grown up during the best era of rock music!

I can’t believe I’m old enough to say “back in the day” but the extra sound came from a keyboard. It was a great instrument to add layers to a song. The only cover of this song that comes close to the original is Hearts tribute to Zeppelin at the Kennedy Center Honors. They had a full orchestra +.

Quite simply one of the greatest rock songs ever made, a quintessential example of old school rock that is still better than most songs made today. The fact that we are still listening to, and enjoying tracks from 50 and 60 years ago, and being blown away by the, again and again, shows the quality of rock from that era (The Animals, AC/DC, Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Queen, The Rolling Stones...the list is endless). I was born in 67, so grew up with a lot of rock music, and I am honestly jealous of people who are only just hearing these songs now. I wish I could unhear these tracks, just so I could hear them again for the first time.
As a guitar player, I can tell you the guitar solo in this song is the greatest guitar solo of all time. Not because of anything other than the way it speaks to you. There are a ton of solos that are fun to play but there are some that can reach down and speak to you in a way that others can't. David Gilmore's solo in Time is another one. Page just hits all tge right notes in this one and says something with the guitar that the song could never say with words. It is that good. The next time you listen to the song you'll know it's coming and every time after that you'll know it's coming. It's a payoff for the listener every time. It never gets old.
YES…you MUST do live….MSG ‘73 is the one to watch. You will begin to see their incredible charisma live. Few have ever matched them for stage presence and sheer swag.

The members of LZ were born to play together and inspire multiple generations to learn how to play the electric guitar.
Those of us who grew up in the late 60s, 70s, and early 80s were all blessed to enjoy some of the best music ever.
Pop music today for anyone in that age group doesn't have the soul our music had.
Our music spoke to us in ways no one, that didn't live through those times, can ever understand.
We don't like or necessarily enjoy today's pop music because it's teen bopper bubble gum pointless music.
That's only my opinion. My children would completely disagree with me. I found out that most of their age group really enjoy the music we grew up with if they take the time to listen to it.

When I was stationed in Hawaii from 1973 -1975 my room mate played an Acoustic 12 string Guitar. When ever I came walking into the room he would switch from what ever he was playing to Stairway to Heaven because he knew it was my favorite song and he played it great.
I saw many concerts in Hawaii in those 2 years, Eric Clapton and His Band, Fleetwood Mac, The Temptations the Moody Blues and many more. Sadly Led Zeppelin did not do a concert while I was there.
On my second tour in Hawaii I was married and only made it to one concert. It was on are anniversary and I took my wife to a double concert. I told her Kenny Rodgers was her anniversary gift and the Rightious Brothers was my anniversary gift. I guess I got the best gift because I liked both of the acts for that concert.
Led Zeppelin always intended to have acoustic elements in their music, on their albums acoustic ballads are interspersed between rock songs!
