For over five years I have been stuck at setting 1 with insufficient grind fineness and have been compensating by over packing and over dosing, leading to wild inconsistencies. All this time I had no idea there was internal adjustability! I was preparing to buy new equipment, but you have given my BBE a new lease on life. THANK YOU!
I've had my grinder for years and didn't realise I could do this. Thanks for the great video
This is the only video I have seen explaining this critical adjustment. I can confirm it is exactly the same on the sage. Where I am pretty sure it is not in the manual. Now enjoying a proper latte. Thank you!!!
Great video! I recently have acquired a brand new breville barista pro and have had never owned one before. I just couldn't get a nice shot after watching copious amount of TH-cam videos. After discovering this, I have learnt that my grind needs to be finer and how to adjust it (and how to get that awful top burr out!!) . Thanks so much!
OMG thank you so much! It was driving me crazy that I couldn't pull a decent shot because of low pressure. Changed the burr from 6 to 3/2, and voila, just like magic it's back to it's former glory 🎉🎉
Ugh, than you. I've recently started roasting my own beans and now have to change my grind settings drastically. I was buying locally roasted beans before, but the settings I had for them made my home roasted beans WAY too fine. I had no idea one bean would grind so vastly different from another!
Thank you sir. U've saved me from bringing back my newly purchased machine to the shop. Its heavy 😅. Been wondering why its not grinding well.
changed the internal grinder from 6 to 4 and the display grinder level to 5 helped me a lot! thank you
Finally a channel that gives clean, actionable insights that are easy to follow rather than ya-da-ya-da
Thanks a million sir. That was really helpful. I bought a different grinder and was upset because I couldn't reach a certain level of finesse until I watched your video through which I realized that there is an internal adjustment to apply. Thanks once again.
I just bought one from ebay and was wondering why coffee was too fine, watched your video and fixed it. Big thumbs up
Thank you so much! I had problems with my grinder. I set it to the finest and still didn't get the right extraction. I think that you just saved my coffee experience with this machine!
This is a 3 yr old video…. It’s become my officials reference video and channel for my express….thank you very much
Thanks a lot!! This saved my sanity for sure! Lots of videos around that doesn't say much about these details!!
Exactly what I needed. Thank you! Changed the top burr setting to 3. Still need to work on dialing in shots but this is a major improvement!
@@stephendoherty2719 Mine doesnt go below 4 and still no luck with getting the right consistency
Did you hear squeaking sound after that? Cuz I do and idk if that's normal 😅
Watched this a few years ago 😄 refreshing my brain…thanks!
Thanks so much for your videos, they teach me a lot on how to dial in my brand new machine
This just saved my sanity. Changed beans (only because my local shop was on backorder) and 1 was too corse
i have a barista express and i had no idea i could do that!!
I discovered that if you turn the external dial to the coarsest setting (30), the upper burr is easier to remove. At the coarsest setting, the conical burr is furthest away from the stationary upper burr, hence making it easier to turn.
Perfect video, worked straight away, thanks a lot
Exactly what I needed, thanks so much!!
I bought an older BBE used and i can't seem to get a fine enough grind! I did some sleuthing and found a single reddit comment that mentioned that the new model's adjustable upper burr assembly fits the old model, so I just ordered a new assembly and hopefully my new-to-me machine will grind a lot better! Thanks for a great video that I'll definitely be coming back to
Thank you! I figured that the problem with my shots must be the grinder! I reset to finer and shots are great now! 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
Perfect video short and to the point. Thank you for sharing it's very helpful.
OMG just before i buy a new more expensive grinder, just what i need, thanks!!
Thank you! I'm thankful for a video vs reading instructions!
This is a game changer! Thanks so much
Excellent tutorial. Thanks a lot man.
Very good demonstration!
Thank you, it help me to understand simply!
This is exactly what I need. Thank you
Quick and concise. Thanks!
As always, great videos. Thank so much
Niceee video man, I was considering buying a new grinder but with these improvement I'm pretty sure it will be great!! New subscriber to you man!
Thanks mate - nice and simple and solved my problem !!
Wow awesome clear vid with nice sharp camera focus on the important bits, cheers!!
Thanks for the vid. As always, well explained! Just ordered Balzac espresso roast. Curious to know your burr and grinder settings please for this bean. Thanks 🙏
I cannot thank you enough, this just saved me from buying a new grinder!
Thanks Bestie! This really helped!
Thanks for the video mate!
Very helpful, thank you.
Perfect! Thank you!
I have a weird problem now. 1 on the display was still a bit too coarse. So I adjusted the inner top burr from 6 to 4.
Now it seems, that the top burr sits too close to the bottom burr: my Grinder screams as the burrs grind on each other. Even with the upper burr set to the old “6”-setting again. Can’t go below 3-4 on the display, as the very loud metal scratching begins. Is my grinder faulty?
Thank YOU!!! , I was ready to take this barista back as it was only 6 months old and way too fast pour on lowest setting. You are the bomb, works great now! The only concern I have now is if I keep adjusting grinder down. I'm at 4 from 6. What happens if this keeps needing to be dialed down until i cant go any further. This breville is only 6 months old and sees average of 3 coffees a day. thanks for all your help!
Life saving video 😂thank you ❤
Great video instruction! I just followed the video and then realized, I did NOT have my "grind adjustment" number at any default number setting? I think I had the slide reel on "2" originally and then adjusted the burr grinder unit by 3 settings, to the finer (counter-clockwise). So what "new" number should I be setting and grinding now, to result in a finer grind? Sorry if I sound confusing, because, I am... Thank you!
Thank you very much, you are the best one!
You're a life saver.
Thanks. Very helpful and now I can adjust the burr setting easily!
Then you just have an older machine, and can purchase a replacement top burr from the link above or directly from Breville.
Thank you so much for this!
Thanks it worked like you explained. I initially COULD NOT release the burr. Luckily I have an air compressor and so I took it to the garage blew it out and it was then very easy to release. If you have any coffee in the top and it won't release, DON'T FORCE IT. Clean it out well and it will work better once you finish that.
Similarly, I got my upper burr out but could not get it back in after adjustment - felt I was going to snap my fingers off. A quick vacuum in and around the grinder, using the brush to get into the grooves soon fixed this and it was easier to twist back into place.
Apparently changing the external grind setting to its coarsest option can make it a little easier to remove the burr.
Thanks so much, mate!
Great video thanks 👌
Thank you for this info.👍🏽
What's your burr and external grind setting on your barista express? I had mine set to burr= 3 and grind 4 but find over pressured tried adjusting to 5 external but still cant get to 12o'clock needle pressure. That perfect crema that I wanted to achieve.
Saved my life
thanks needed this
Any thoughts about the Breville Grind Control? I bought one to replace my previous brewer, and absolutely HATE it! I own the Barista Express, and and super happy with it...so I can't figure out how this brewer can be so worthless! Any thoughts would be appreciated!
I've just purchased a breville barista express. I've tried grind setting of 8 5 and 3 and the longest shot I was able to pour was 12 seconds to get 36g of espresso. I'm vibrating from all the espresso I've had. I gotta grind setting 1then most likely play with the micro adjustments. I'll update once I get it right. Thanks for the helpful video
Keep my tip burr on three after three years not sure if they wear down
I adjusted my inner burr from 6-4 but I’m still grinding coffee at the same numbers as before on the outer dial 1-3. I didn’t seem to gain anything extra. Have I done a something wrong?
Hahaha, thanks. I didn't understand the manual's instruction because it wasn't clear. Now I could set level grinder of my Barista Breville.
Thanks so much.
Great video
Thank you
I recently bought very dark roast beans from a different supplier. But even at the most fine setting internally and externally and a very heavy dose and tamp the flow is way to fast? Does this mean there is something wrong with the beans?
Thank you!
Thanks! finest grind setting is not enough even though I tamped pretty well. now it should be better.
is there any way you can share a vid about using the milk steamer and getting the right consistency of milk for latte art? Tia!
Put my burr setting down to a 4 and it fixed everything!!! Grind setting set to 9 and grind amount 2
omg, thanks, you just saved me 500€ for a new grinder, i was so desperate to buy a new one.
This is all fine except no amount of pressure on the wire handle will get anything to move. Thinking that it was me I've had several friends give it a try also with no luck. Things are wedged in there tight. Any suggestions on how to get it to move. Currently even on the coarsest setting it generates to much pressure. The fingers on my hand may never heal!
Any tips for removing the top outer black burr? I cannot get that thing to move no matter how much force I use.
after I adjusted the upper burr and replaced the burr correctly - the metal handle is slightly elevated and does not sit flush?
Great video. Unfortunately i still can't find right settings. Coffee is grinded way to fine, Same coffee, same settings i think its time for service.
Very helpfull, thanks!!
Thankyou
Thanks !!!
well done
Bro thanks!
thank youuuuu👍
Currently having issues dialing in our Breville Pro using the IMS group head screen and IMS 18-22g basket.
I have been through all the settings and the closest I can get to 1:2 ratio (30-35 sec @ 36g) is external 6 grind setting (we haven't messed with the internal grind setting yet).
We are getting semi soupy pucks (not one piece ejected dry pucks we expected) after the completion of the process.
Not sure what we are doing wrong, but we have gone through a crap load of expensive coffee (I should have purchased cheap grocery store espresso instead of using the $30 bags of beans) to attempt the dial in. :)
Can anyone provide their known good settings for the IMS basket and shower screen hardware on the Breville Pro? We would really appreciate it. Thank you.
Dude, I have the Krups Conical grinder and the blades look the same, but I can not do that same process with it, it doesn't have that option with the numbers, any suggestions please? ☹
Legend!!
Do you know how to fix when you adjust to 1 in the Burr and keep the grinder to 1, and still not fine enough?
This tips should be mentioned in the quick setup booklet. I just knew about it after 1 month of using the machine and not been able to get proper shot using non pressurised basket 😐
Yes. It took me a couple of days to arrive here. I had to set my burr down to 2 in order to get enough pressure with fresh beans from a local coffee shop. Clearly, there's a pretty wide variance from machine to machine.
He mentioned it's in the instruction manual, not sure if that's what you're referring to though
stu here in Oz....i've been using mine with a sylvia i can't get any coffee under a ground of 18 usually 21 or 22 and great coffee for 15 years ......how can coffee unless it's old need any less a grind.....all confused!!!!!!!!
my upper burr doesnt have the adjustment ring :( it must be a older model... should i get a replacement upper burr with the adjustment ring?
What if internal burr is set to 1, and external to 1 - everything maximum fineness and you are still underextracting with 18g of coffee?
hey man what ditstance is your puck set at ??
Very good and informative. Thank you so much. As I was all the way to number 1 setting on the grind size selector, and number 6 on the upper burr, I was wondering how many numbers would you suggest that I move the upper burr so that I may be able to stay around 4 or 5 on the grind size selector? I understand that all the coffee's are different, just looking for an estimate to better get me into the ballpark.
2M views hello i have passed my upper burr from 6 to 3 to have about 20 seconds of coffee flow by cons the taste is like water. if I make it even thinner my pressure gauge will overpressure. I'm a little lost can you help me a little?
@@83kif Watch this video start to finish and you should have all your answers :)

depende del portaflitro, si es prensado o no.
Si es prensado, usalo en configuración 2 al 4, y en la posición 7 la molienda.
Si no es prestando se recomienda colocar un filtro encima del portaflitro.
Great video! QUESTION: say I’ve got my top burrs set at 6, the wheel ones at 1. Is the next fineness level the wheel level 16 and top burr to 5? Is there a sequence of fineness at all or just trial and error?
Upper Burr vs Outer Dial Grind Setting | Breville Barista
th-cam.com/video/_uB3FZGkR6E/w-d-xo.html
On the most fine bur setting and finest grind on the dial but still runs fast. Any ideas?
Hi, does anyone here knows who to judge the Breville Smart Grinder Pro burr has worn out? How do we know which one? Upper or lower burr?
Hello, there! What if I set my external grind at 1 and have a good pressure at 12 o’clock but I see that it still runs too fast for me. Should I change it finer in the inner grinder or it doesn’t matter how it runs and the most important key is the pressure? I am very confused. Please help 😭
Flow is more important than pressure. If you're at a grind setting of 1, I'd suggest making the internal grind setting one step finer and then dial back in to slow down your flow. Don't worry if the pressure moves up higher than 12 o'clock, my favorite shots have been pulled at 1 o'clock or sometimes even further! In the end, follow your tastebuds rather than numbers
Has anyone tried using the grinder in the BES870 for pout over coffee? I've gone to the coarsest setting on the burr and dial, and i'm not convinced it's coarse enough. Thoughts?
I don't believe that even at the coarsest internal and external grind setting it would be coarse enough for pour over (unfortunately). The standalone Smart Grinder Pro has a wider adjustment range for brew methods other than espresso.
Would this help the following scenario: internal burr 6 (stock) external 6 is a bit too fast (18g in, 28 seconds, 46g out) . If I go to 5 external , I can choke the shot or have a lmk extremely low volume. I think I want a “5.5” external setting. Everything I have seen on the internal burr adjustment is for when you get to the extremes on the external vs what I am looking to solve
No, this won't help on that scenario, but lucky for you we have a video on that exact topic that will! th-cam.com/video/Q1lVdhly_rc/w-d-xo.html
Great video. I was able to remove it from the breville and cleaned it but when I placed it back it went in place but the lock red is not aligned with the grinder red arrow. The red dots are on the opposite side of where align and lock are. Does this mess with the grind?
Did you solve the problem? My red arrow and 'lock/align' are not aligned and hence I am not sure how to remove the burr at all, for cleaning and adjustment.
@@SathishkumarJagadeesan
Yes I got it aligned. To remove the bur just twist the plastic piece inside the hopper counterclockwise and remove it. Then hold the grinder by the handle and twist counterclockwise and it comes out. Clean really well inside with the provided brushes. Sometimes you may need to place the machine upside down and shake it to remove all the old grind. Sometimes it can be a little difficult to place the grinder back in place if there are left over beans that didn't grind well.
@@arielrodriguez975 Thank you. I have now managed to remove and adjust and put back in place the top burr.
Great video, thanks for sharing.
Can you do one on how to fix an under extraction at high pressure? could really use some tips
Grinding finer and slightly lowering the dose should help get your extraction up, but it's tough to gauge without seeing/tasting. Have you seen this video I put out on dialing in? Take a look especially at the second half of the video where I go into detail about tuning to taste. th-cam.com/video/d0g8umpINGQ/w-d-xo.html
