I buy a considerable amount of Kicking horse brand coffees, what I don't like is them using an algorithm to charge a different price to an unknown customer, and a higher price when I am signed into my account. Several big retail grocery stores have been doing that and using cameras in the aisled to identify customers before purchases, instead of a paper price on the shelf, its electronic and scans as you place it in your cart. This is illegal trade practice and should be prosecuted.
Suggest replacing the felt washer each time you clean. Will prevent the coffee ground that messed onto the bottom washer and next to the shaft. That's the function of the felt washer.... prevent getting grinds between the felt washer and the shaft. I order 10 at a time. Low cost item and easily damaged.
@Graps19 hey there, thank you for watching and commenting! I've spoken with Breville about the felt washer, and they told me it is not a required part. We've operated our grinder for over 3 years without it, and it hasn't affected the machine. According to Breville, it is mostly in place for shipping purposes. We purchased the Breville Smart Pro grinder a couple of years ago, and it didn't even have the felt washer from the factory. If having the felt washer in place makes you more comfortable, then absolutely keep using it. If you've not already subscribed to our channel, please do so. It really helps us out! Merry Christmas to you and yours!🎄🎅 Cheers, Rick 😎 👍 ☕️
@GroundsForDivorceCoffee Hi, My local agent (Durban South Africa) keeps the felt washer in stock. Easy for me to get and cheap. I like that it keeps the internals clean.
thank you so much for this, great video

You forgot to mention, don’t put the fabric washer in the water. DON’T. Mine broke immediately and now I can’t drink coffee until a new one arrives.
@JoshG-pj3jo hi Josh...you don't need the felt washer. Ive spoken with the repair guy from Breville and he said it's primarily there for shipping purposes. Ive used my grinder for about 3 years now without it and have had no negative consequences. In fact, we also have a Breville Smart Pro grinder, which has same design, and it didn't have the felt washer from the factory. No need to wait, enjoy your coffee! Thanks for a great video. We are working our way through. The basket at 1:45 refuses to budge on our machine and I'm hesitant to use force in case I break metal clip away from plastic ring. Any suggestions gratefully received. Thank you.
Hi there, thank you for watching and commenting, I really appreciate it! Yes, there is an easy fix. Dial your grind setting all the way to the most coarse setting. There is likely some small chunks of beans creating pressure between the top and bottom burr, which is preventing you from turning the top burr. Let me know how it works out. If you're not already subscribed to our channel, please do so - it really helps us out! Cheers, Rick 🙂👍☕
@@GroundsForDivorceCoffee Wow! Thank you for your quick response. Our machine goes to 16. I've tried that with no success. I took over from my partner who had removed the centre nut and I replaced it and set to 1 then moved to 16. I got a fine wooden skewer and worked around the rim and lifted a little bit of coffee ground residue but still no progress. I have tried small movements back and forth but no success. I could try brute force but I'm reluctant. I can't see how to add an image
@@GroundsForDivorceCoffee Good news I worked away scraping ail I could with my small wooden skewer from around the rim of the upper burr component and eventually it let go and released, thanks for the help and encouragement. I'll do the rest tomorrow
Still use this video year after year. Thank you.
@bruzzer11 that is awesome, thank you! It really is rewarding to hear that people have found the video helpful. @chrisrutter528 0 seconds ago Hey, can anyone tell me if (on the Touch model) you can remove the lower or bottom burr? It seems fixed?
Hi Chris...all of the Breville & Sage integrated grinders should be pretty much identical in their mechanisms. As such, the bottom burr should be removable after you remove the nut/washers from the top part of it. Note, the thread on the shaft is reversed. When you go to remove it, you actually need to turn the nut clockwise. Righty tighty, lefty loosey does not apply in this instance lol. Hope this helps, let me know. If you've not already subscribed to the channel, please do so - it really helps us out! Cheers, Rick
How strange. Yeah I got the nut removed, and the two washers, but it feels like the whole bottom burr plus the fan are all stuck on. Maybe I’m not pulling hard enough
Just a note whilst everything is apart it would be good to inspect the burr edges of upper and lower burr for sharpness , wear and damage. This is a high wear item and if worn will not allow a proper grind.
@dashbmw agreed, that is a valid point to note. We've been fortunate, even with heavy use for about 9 years, the burrs are still in sharp condition. It's always worth inspection, though, as something hard, like a pebble, may have gotten past the sorter at the coffee plant and into the bag of beans. Thank you for watching and commenting, we appreciate it! If you've not already subscribed to our channel, please do so, it really helps us out! Cheers, Rick 😎 👍 ☕️
Hi, good tutorial, I did this also and one key point is to make sure all parts are completely dry with trapped water. Especially the fan spreader. This will cause too much humidity in the area that cause a blockage. Dry parts completely. Possibly use compressed air.
@dashbmw thank you, glad you liked it. Yes, drying is essential. You could use compressed air or even a hair dryer to make sure it is all fully dried. 😎👍☕️
hello, i did clean everything, but when I start the grinder, it makes an extra sound, as if it needs oil or I don't know... I say that it could be one of the following reasons: I tightened the nut too much (with a tool) maybe because of cleaning the up and bottom burr with water is it normal since it was recently cleaned what do you advise me? I'm worried.
@bluxen16 hi there...try to loosen the nut and only tighten finger tight. It does not need to be torqued on. Cleaning with water as I did won't harm the burrs, but make sure they're dry before re-installing. There is nothing requiring oiling, and it will only clog things up. Take it all apart, put back together, but don't over tighten the nut. Let me know how that works for you. If you've not already subscribed to our channel, please do so. It really helps us out! Cheers, Rick 😎 👍 ☕️
@@GroundsForDivorceCoffee I was waiting for your quick response but TH-cam didn't notify me. so, in the end I did what you mentioned, I screwed the nut with my hands, I put everything dry and clean, and it still has that loud sound. I'm already used to it, but I do miss the normal sound of the machine. thanks for answering

@@GroundsForDivorceCoffee Done! Thanks
How often do you recommend doing this type of cleaning / disassembly? 1x a month?
@thomasgentil4907 Hi Thomas, thank you for watching and commenting. Two important things to remember: 1) Clean the grinder whenever you change roasts or brands to ensure proper flavor. 2) At a minimum, clean the grinder out at least every couple of weeks. Oils from the coffee beans will go rancid and will negatively alter the flavor of your coffee. Once you've done a deep clean like the one in this video, you can get away with a condensed version. Check out our TH-cam Shorts section for a 1 minute video showing a simplified cleaning that I think you'll like. Be careful and don't suck the felt washer into your vacuum if you use the vacuum to remove the lower fan below the burr. I had to go fish the felt washer out of the nastiness in my vacuum reservoir and try to clean it!!!! :(
@jackbonnette4289 thank you for watching and commenting, Jack! You can disregard the felt washer, it is not important for the grinder operation. I was told by Breville Parts guy that it is mostly used for shipping. We've used our grinder for about 3 years now without it and have had zero issues. Hey! I have the breville barista pro and it keeps saying lock hopper while it’s already locked in any advice? Thanks in advance
Hi Keith, have you cleaned the grinder thoroughly? There may be small pieces of beans that is affecting the switch that recognizes the hopper is in place. Try using either a small brush to clean it out or if possible, use a vacuum to extract any difficult to reach pieces. Give the hopper a good brushing as well, not just inside the grinder. Let me know if this corrects the issue. Cheers, Rick 🙂👍☕
Watch it in 1.25x speed thank me later
My coffee machine has been making noise , and it sounds like the coffee is getting stuck in the grinder. I tried to remove the top grinder component, but it seems stuck and won't come out easily. It doesn't seem as simple as yours, where you can just turn it and take the whole thing out. Could you provide some guidance?
Hi Stephanie, no worries - it is an easy fix. Sometimes small pieces of coffee bean remain stuck between the top & bottom burrs. This causes pressure that makes removal of the top burr difficult. All you need to do is dial back the grind setting to the most coarse setting. This widens the space between the burrs and releases the pressure. You will then be able to easily remove the top burr. If you have any issues with it, feel free to let me know. Thank you for watching and commenting. I would really appreciate you subscribing to our channel, it really helps us out! Cheers, Rick 😀👍☕
@@GroundsForDivorceCoffeeThank you so much for your reply and helpful tips! :) I’m really glad it worked out. Wonderful learning experience! I regularly have cleaned out the top grinder for at least 7 years, but this video convinced me I could complete the entire process. The felt washer was almost impossible to see with all the coffee on it. And, thank you for the very clear re-assembling instructions! The tip about using the hairdryer was genius!

@StephanieFazioLealouCooks Hi Stephanie, I'm glad you found the video helpful. Don't worry about replacing the felt washer. It is not an essential component for operating the grinder. I've used our grinder for over 3 years without the felt ring with no complications. I was told by Breville Parts dept that it is primarily in place for shipping protection and is not required to operate the grinder. In fact, we also have a Breville Smart Pro grinder (pretty much identical components), and it did not even have the felt ring from the factory. I hope this helps you out! @@GroundsForDivorceCoffee oh good to know - thanks so much!!
Thanks for this video. It is really clear and comprehensive. Also, even if you don’t pull the mechanism apart, it’s a good idea to at least check the hex nut is secure from time to time. I took mine apart for the first time since I bought it 5 years ago and found that the hex nut was nearly falling off. A stitch in time!!!

THE FELT WASHER!!!!! This video saved me. I pulled it out of the vacuum. Had NO idea. Thank you!
Hi Olivia! LOL, no worries about the felt washer, even if you lost or damaged it. Breville informed me that the felt washer is really more for preventing damage during shipping and is not an integral component for the grinder. We've used ours for well over 2 years without it and have had zero problems. We also bought the Breville Smart Pro grinder, which is essentially identical, and it did not have the felt ring from the factory. Thank you for watching and commenting. @@GroundsForDivorceCoffeethanks for the reassurance, Just broke mine and have been searching the internet for any type of info as to how important it is, and if it needs replacing..
Our unit never came with a washer beneath the fan disk, I am now discovering this is the reason our machine would never grind fine enough.
Hi Matt...Breville told me that the felt ring is predominantly there for shipping protection. It is not an essential part to the machine. In fact, our Breville Smart Pro grinder we bought last year did not have one either. Our Barista Express has been used without the felt ring for over 2 years with no issue. I have not heard of the felt ring affecting the fineness of grinding. Thank you for watching and commenting. If you've not already subscribed to our channel, please do so, it really helps us out! Cheers, Rick 😎 👍 ☕️
@GroundsForDivorceCoffee I never mentioned anything about the felt ring. I was referring about the metal washer.
Just followed the video. It is great, except that the washer (or washers--you said it could be one or two) below the felt washer came out last, but I could not see that you put it back. For reassembling you put the felt washer back first.
Hi Diana...thank you for watching and commenting. The felt ring goes in before you put the fan back in place. However, it is not an essential component and is primarily I. Place for shipping/transportation purposes. Ice spoken to Breville about it and that's what I was told. In fact the Rep said don't bother replying it if it is damaged. We've used our grinder (heavily) for 2-3 years without it and have had no problems. Also, the new Breville Smart Pro grinder we purchased last year (identical components) did not come with the felt ring. I hope this helps answer your question. If you've not already subscribed to our channel, please do so, it really helps us out! Cheers, Rick 😎 👍 ☕️
Excellent video, don't have the machine 😂😂😂, but the only one I've seen that shows cleaning the grinder parts. 🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾
Thank you for watching and commenting! Cleaning the grinder is critical to ensure longer lasting equipment and preventing the old oils from the bean causing the flavour to go off. The oils will eventually go rancid and significantly changes the taste of the coffee. If you're not already subscribed to our channel, please do so - it will really help us out! Have a great weekend! DO NOT WASH A FABRIC RING!
Correct, as it will disintegrate. However, as mentioned in comments before, you don't require the felt ring. It is for shipping purposes and not a required part. @@GroundsForDivorceCoffee hi. Is it flavoured coffee??
@@GroundsForDivorceCoffee what does tour free sample look like? Is it a little package say for 1 cup or a whole bag?
Fantastic video, I made the mistake of pouring water into the grinder instead of the usual water thing. This video saved me quite a bit of cash, could clean on the gunk out and works perfectly now. Thank you! Side note, I vacuumed up the felt washer, but found it in the vacuum bag luckily.
Hey, that's great it helped you! Don't worry about the felt washer, it is not an important piece. It is really more for stopping damage during shipping. The Breville Parts Rep told me it did not need replacing, as mine disintegrated. We bought the Breville Smart Pro grinder, which mechanically is almost identical to the one on the Barista Express. It did not even have the felt washer from the manufacturing process. If you've not already subscribed to our channel, please do so - it'll really help us out! Thank you, Rick 😎 👍 ☕️
Does this actually make a difference in the taste of your coffee? I am worried about doing the full disassembly because I might screw something up, especially the felt washer. I understand that all of the coffee grinds in the nooks and crannies will be cleaned out, but won't they just be replaced by new grinds after you use the grinder a few times. Won't any grinds in there just become inert and neutral regarding flavour transfer?
Hi Wayne, Yes, cleaning it regularly makes a big difference in flavour of your coffee. The grinds are organic and the oils in them will go rancid over time. It will taint the flavour of your coffee. Cleaning it out will also extend the life of your grinder. Dont worry about the felt ring, Breville had told me it is really only for shipping purposes and does not require replacing. We have operated ours for over 2 years without it and have not had any issues. I hope this helps you out and if you've not already subscribed to our channel, please do so, it'll really help us out! Hi there, try using the vacuum method. If that does not work, get a pair of chopsticks and use on opposing sides to pinch the fan and lift. It will come off, just take your time. Let me know how it works out. Cheers, Rick
Great video just watch and instead of using vacuum I used the skewers to get the felt wash up two of them! Thanks for your video as my grinder was blocked now working again
Great presentation! Thanks for sharing👏🏻👏🏻👍🏿 4:41 … My 2021-22 Oracle has a 10mm nut, lock & flat washers, but NO additional washers, except felt, below the “fan.”🤔 Great tip using vac to lift the “fan!” FYI: no need to actually wash anything if you use the Breville “Scoop Brush” to clean the fan blades & burr grinder… then use paper towel or microfiber cloth to wipe down parts. Breville “Customer Service” is quite excellent via phone. They sent me videos for this cleaning process. FYI: you cannot over torque the nut, as the shaft will turn. Breville recommends turning grind setting to highest (coarsest) setting to remove the upper Burr Grinder… clean/vacuum it before “popping” it out to avoid a mess of beans/grinds… mine was frozen… twist L-R-L at the base of the folding wire handle. Patience may be required… it will eventually break free.
