I am so happy to find this video! I am not a senior, however I am a person who has a balance disorder. I have been doing these exercises and other similar ones over the years to keep my body strong especially during times when I am immobilized by my disorder. I have chronic vestibular migraine and so my balance issues are cyclical in nature. I started off doing the heel raises and I have added over the years some squats and some stretches and also some push-ups against the counter in my kitchen. Even though I already do the things that you are suggesting here, it pleases me very much to see that others might learn these exercises because I know them to be beneficial. I started to do some of these exercises in my early 40s. I’m now in my mid-50s and I can tell you that I have a higher rate of flexibility and I have stronger leg muscles than a lot of people my age.

After 40 years of Canadian life, it's very difficult to 'readjust' to public healthcare in this country - even when in Canada resources for low-income Seniors aren't great, there's better information for patients, at least in BC where I lived - and there's a lot more respect for elderly folks. You remind me about some excellent physiotherapists I had to manage my pain and arthritis issues. You're so knowledgeable and such a good instructor - I wish you the best!!

Thank you for doing this!!!!! I am only 53 years old. I got in a car wreck in 2009 and ever since I have pelvic groin pain and back Si joint pain. I use to be a power walker 4.6 on the Treadmill. I miss it very much but I just cannot do it thank you so much for this thank you.

Just found your channel , it’s so kind of you to help the older folks keep moving so important as we get older. I have just found out I have a degenerative disc in my spine is there things that I should not be doing as to not make it worse ? Always on the move lol I’m an extremely active person.

There is a lot you can still do, but avoid these: Weightlifting Exercises Any lifting or bending exercise can put stress on the back, especially if it not done using the correct form and posture. Dead lifts and squats are not recommended if you have a degenerative disc. Dead lifts, especially if using heavy weights, aggravate pain by putting greater stress on the discs. In addition, they can overstretch the hamstrings and lower back muscles. Squats put excessive rotational force on the lumbar spine and can cause injury if you suffer from degenerative disc disease or have other lower back injuries. Sit-Ups Avoid sit-ups or any other exercise where you bend forward or twist at the waist. Sit-ups can put pressure on your spine and increase your risk of a compression fracture, according to MayoClinic.com. Staying active is important, so continue that :)

I am 74 and about 4-5 years ago, my back , knees and legs just fell apart! Couldn't even walk across the house let alone go for a walk. Lots of P.T. and home exercises later I am at least going for 1/2 mile walks but they are still a struggle. These exercises look simple and doable. I want to be active again! (Too much activity early on I am afraid--especially lots of horse type accidents. Re-trained horses I bought and there was always a fight at first.) Life is more fun when you can participate!

This is great info! However for a person without good balance, holding onto something with a handle might be helpful too. If they started to fall back, to grab on to something could save a fall as well. One idea might be to have a safety bar (or sturdy towel rack reinforced properly by a carpenter) installed-- in the bathroom/laundry room or other location. Just a thought! Keep up the good work! 👍

I am 67 and I am not able to stand up as there is no strength in lower back. Pl. load exercise video to enable me to stand up and do these exercises. Waiting for the help.

Darn, wish TH-cam would have found this video for me a few months ago when my Mum arrived for the holidays. I have her doing step ups on a stool and in a short time, her weak leg got so much better. Too bad I won’t be able to have her do these for more than 2 days. Also, do you have exercises for people that had Total Hip Replacements? I have to be so careful, I can’t do most that I see on TH-cam for fear of dislocation.

It's a good idea to wear some supportive shoes while exercising so you will feel more secure on your feet and don't need to worry and losing your balance. It's a great idea to take a few minutes during the day to exercise. It doesn't have to take long! :)

After 40 years of Canadian life, it's very difficult to 'readjust' to public healthcare in this country - even when in Canada resources for low-income Seniors aren't great, there's better information for patients, at least in BC where I lived - and there's a lot more respect for elderly folks. You remind me about some excellent physiotherapists I had to manage my pain and arthritis issues. You're so knowledgeable and such a good instructor - I wish you the best!!

Just found your channel , it’s so kind of you to help the older folks keep moving so important as we get older. I have just found out I have a degenerative disc in my spine is there things that I should not be doing as to not make it worse ? Always on the move lol I’m an extremely active person.

Weightlifting Exercises
Any lifting or bending exercise can put stress on the back, especially if it not done using the correct form and posture. Dead lifts and squats are not recommended if you have a degenerative disc. Dead lifts, especially if using heavy weights, aggravate pain by putting greater stress on the discs. In addition, they can overstretch the hamstrings and lower back muscles.
Squats put excessive rotational force on the lumbar spine and can cause injury if you suffer from degenerative disc disease or have other lower back injuries.
Sit-Ups
Avoid sit-ups or any other exercise where you bend forward or twist at the waist. Sit-ups can put pressure on your spine and increase your risk of a compression fracture, according to MayoClinic.com.
Staying active is important, so continue that :)

I am 74 and about 4-5 years ago, my back , knees and legs just fell apart! Couldn't even walk across the house let alone go for a walk. Lots of P.T. and home exercises later I am at least going for 1/2 mile walks but they are still a struggle. These exercises look simple and doable. I want to be active again! (Too much activity early on I am afraid--especially lots of horse type accidents. Re-trained horses I bought and there was always a fight at first.) Life is more fun when you can participate!

However for a person without good balance, holding onto something with a handle might be helpful too. If they started to fall back, to grab on to something could save a fall as well.
One idea might be to have a safety bar (or sturdy towel rack reinforced properly by a carpenter) installed-- in the bathroom/laundry room or other location. Just a thought!

These exercises are deceptively simple. Found out how out of shape I am. Can't even come up with any excuses to not do them.

I am 67 and I am not able to stand up as there is no strength in lower back.
Pl. load exercise video to enable me to stand up and do these exercises.
Waiting for the help.
Maybe you can start with leg raises sitting down. Can you walk around the table holding on.

Darn, wish TH-cam would have found this video for me a few months ago when my Mum arrived for the holidays. I have her doing step ups on a stool and in a short time, her weak leg got so much better. Too bad I won’t be able to have her do these for more than 2 days. Also, do you have exercises for people that had Total Hip Replacements? I have to be so careful, I can’t do most that I see on TH-cam for fear of dislocation.

Is it necessary to wear shoes while doing the exercise...Bcoz while cooking i can attempt these but I don't wear shoes in the kitchen
It's a good idea to wear some supportive shoes while exercising so you will feel more secure on your feet and don't need to worry and losing your balance. It's a great idea to take a few minutes during the day to exercise. It doesn't have to take long! :)
