    In this video, I clean and protect the undercarriage of my little bro’s Golf; Julia. I used a few products to get it clean, and I’ve even showed you before how to do it.
    How to Degrease Your Wheel Wells ▶︎ • How to Degrease Your W...
    We further the procedure after degreasing the underside of the car, by following it up with some 3M rubberized undercoat. We picked up a 6 pack to do each of the wheel wells, and the undercarriage of the car.
    The entire frame was essentially coated, and the main parts we didn’t want to undercoat is any rotating part, the engine, the transmission, the exhaust, the brakes, the wheels, and anything that would get excessively hot.
    By doing this, we can further the life of the car, by preventing the vehicle from rusting. Ideally, we would want the mechanical parts of the car to die on us, before the body does, hence this rust prevention.

    Never put rubberized undercoats, especially in multiple layers. Rust will occur underneath and it will very difficult to repair afterwards

      O GS only if you haven’t treated the rust and ensured it’s 100% dry. We had a 1971 Triumph GT6 in for restoration years ago and it had been waxoyled since new (every year) the chassis was immaculate.

      i think youre wrong... if the surface is rust free and painted over before applying rubber coating it should not rust... the rubber coating is there to protect the paint from chipping or cracking which would make the surface rust... however obviously if you already have rust underneath then putting anything on it at that point is useless

      @@e36fanatics Why any sane man would throw rubberized at clean metal in time of epoxy primers.

    • @DataLog
      @DataLog 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      @@e36fanatics I think he makes a good point. There was a problem with polymer coated rebar in construction. The problem wasn't actually that everything would rust, but that rust would be focused in one place and literally cut the metal in half on one spot while everything else looks fine.
      I'm not sure whether to do this to my car or not, but his WV seemed to already have a nice protective layer from the factory. I have Škoda with probably the same coating from the factory, and after 15 years of salty waters and harsh winters nothing happened to it. So I'm not sure if this is really necessary.

      Wrong... If you spray this over rust or bare metal then yes it will rust, obviously. You need to sand and prep the area to be coated first. If you have any bare areas you need to prime them before applying this rubber coating. The problem is lazy dumbass people that think they can just spray this over existing rust and bare metal.

    This exactly product was added to my truck when it was new and it doesn't stop rust. If any area is open from the coating (such as the top of the frame since you can't reach that with the body on) then it will get moisture and crap behind the coating and it will speed up rusting. Eventually the rust started to bleed through my coating so I removed it all and found a lot of rust formed behind it. Afterwards I Por15'ed it to get rid of the rust.

    Nice video but in my opinion rubberized undercoating allows salt water to enter behind a rock chip and rust the panel from behind you won't be able to notice until it starts to bubble, I think it's better to use an oil based undercoating 2 times during the winter months like NH oil and fluid film and wash off in the summer. Por 15 and the winter oil based undercoatings work really well together. None of our family vehicles have any rust before I knew about por 15 or fluid film or nh oil our vehicles were simply undercoated with used engine oil 2 times a year during the winter months I do live in Vancouver BC and it doesn't snow too much here however this year we beat Edmonton it doesn't hurt to protect your vehicle regardless of how much snow you get where you live

    Living in Denmark where rustproofing cars is very common it is normal to clean up the whole underside of the car with a high pressure cleaner, after that you apply a layer of rustproofing paint, I think this has oil and additives in it as well. After that you spray it with Tectyl or Dinotrol, which ever brand you like. Brand is not that important, doing it properly and making sure that the factory coat can work with the product is more important. Almost all brands sold in Northern Europe is either oil or wax based and will last about two years. When the first layer of rustproofing has been applies you dont really need to worry about how many layers of the black coat you apply afterwards, two coats are standard to protect against rocks and dirt and also sound proofs the car. To finish you drill holes in certain places and get a cap attached to a hose for the spray can and apply a product for the insides of the doors, the hood, etc. Then you apply rubber caps in the holes you just drilled and filled. At least here in the north it is essential to have your car protected and most cars dont have rust problems even though 3/4 of the years is cold and rainy. 1/4 of the year a lot of salt is on the road, and I mean LOTS. Mainly Japanese cars will rust due to being cheaper and not well suited for the climate, however I would say after owning to Toyotas that they are much more reliable and after protection there seems to be no issues. Good luck with your rust protection and remember to wear a mask :)

    This is a superficial treatment because the rust happens on the interior of doors, the frame, and fenders. The best treatment is an oil/wax based product that never hardens but stays flexible and wet. Undercoatings tend to dry, crack and then trap salt and moisture under the coating and actually accurate the damage

    I've used Dinitrol wax based products including behind the arch liners. Not a big fan of rubberised coatings as they hold moisture if the covering gets compromised for some reason and can rust the steel away behind without you knowing until it's too late.

    The real test for any rust prevention or treatment is how it performs over the long term. We need to see the vehicle before treatment, then after say a year , then two years & five years etc.
    Also, how does it react with rubber seals ? What about applying rust converter first?

    Living in Maine, I wanted to protect a van that I purchased last fall. It seemed to do a pretty good job until snow started to melt, and then it simply did a poor job. Now I was careful to clean, sand or anything else that needed to be done BEFORE applying this. Areas of the van that had no rust before, now have rust, it started to flake in spots... and now I'm looking to do it again. I spent a fortune on 3M last fall, but now need to do it again and looking for perhaps another brand. Has anyone else had this issue?

  • @CosmicMindSense
    @CosmicMindSense 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    For those who think that rubberized undercoats isin't good....
    If you have rust crawling under the undercoating, the factory coating was already broken, and likely already rusting when you coated it. If the undercoating was not there, the rust would be crawling under the paint instead. If the undercoating was applied to an unbroken, uncorroded, and painted or E-coated (as in the frame) surface, the undercoating can do no harm, it will only help. Cheap crap may just fall off and become useless, but it won't cause harm in the process.
    Stopping rust before it starts. Seriously, no common road debris will penetrate the factory underbody coatings. This is the stuff that is applied to the underbody and lower body (that texture on the rocker panels, etc.) that I'm talking about here. It takes a pretty serious scrape, nick, gouge, or impact to penetrate it. At that point, sure - corrosion will start, but this is preferable to every stone that hits the vehicle starting hundreds of small rust spots. Look at cars in a parking lot some time. Look at the front bumpers and hoods and see how blasted they are. Then look at the rockers or any place where you see texture under the paint. My friend has a 1985 MR2 that was undercoated very early in its life, and the underbody is flawless. If you know these cars (and any pre-1990 Toyota) you know they're rust magnets.

      As long as you clean it and prep it prior to spraying, you can spray nearly anything with this rubberized undercoating. You can coat the wheel wells, rocker panels, floor pans, backside of body panels, brake lines, fuel lines, etc. As long as it doesn't rotate and doesn't get hot, you're good :)

Funny thing though about Chrysler Corporation cars and trucks, seems their bodies just don't at all hold up for some strange reason, seems they disintegrate really fast. Their engines run forever, just the bodies don't hold up very well.

    You painted the brake lines here in ireland we have a thing called nct where your car goes in for inspection every 3 years if it's new when you bought it then every 2 years after that then every year when it's over 10 years old and that would fail it they would make you fit all new brake pipes and bring it in for a re test ( it's a government thing u have to do it or you get fined) its €56 for the test and €28 for a re test if it fails and they make it fail most of the time by Hammering a screwdriver into the wheel arches happened to me 2 weeks ago.

    Did you notice any sound deadning effect, after doing this? Some companies mention that their (similar) products help prevent rust, but also help sound deadning.

    Not only are you preventing rust, but it's aesthetically pleasing since it looks like your car has been painted a different color than factory. You'll also potentially get a little bit of sound deadening from the rubber loading those panels. Great vid!

      I'm with you 100%. I love the fresh, clean, uniform black look under the entire car. Especially if you have a few rusty parts that you want to cover up.

    Milan your bumper doesen't align properly. Can you make a video about fixing that. I also have that small problem. Keep it up!

    • @alexmysliwiec7697
      @alexmysliwiec7697 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ion Bobes that's a replica .:R bumper so it's naturally not going to align properly. if you have the OEM vw front bumper, you can take it off and try to remount it with the help of some friends to try to keep it even before screwing it together. if that doesn't work, the tracks/guides on the bumper/fender might be broken and need to be replaced

    I Always spray on a layer of rocker guard before i spray on the rubberized under coating.... If you do it fast they weld together and when the rubber wears off atleast there wont be any exposed metal... You can go a step further and spray on some zimc galvanizing paint before those steps

    Now that the wheels are off, do you have any idea what my issue could be:
    When I turn my right wheel all the way left/right, it makes a "clonk" sound every time the wheel makes a rotation.
    any idea?

    How do you safely lift your car on to 4 stands? I have a 2012 beetle but when I lift it up I do not have space for a jack stand at the same point.

    • @Fly_stackz
      @Fly_stackz 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Michael DiPasquale just buy a heavy duty 3ton jack and u should be good , also jack from subframe , if it's a unibody lift from 2-3 inches away from where you want to put the jack stands , do one side at a time if that helps you.
