I love how you edit out all the swearing, kicking things, yelling at the sky and negotiating with yourself to not give up and finish the job. Makes car repair seem so pleasant. :)
As a 52 yr old sheet metal tradesman I’d recommend someone who has never welded sheet metal to a day or 2 practicing with slow/fast wire speeds and low/high power to get a true feel for welding car body metal. Chris is making this sound a lot easier than it actually is. Practice will mean you don’t need to repeat the job. My new apprentices spend a month (a least) practicing before they touch a customers job.
I've always been afraid of welding, but I was thinking something similar. I've seen enough and read enough to know about welding that its not THAT easy, and especially once you get close to structural joints around suspension. But I think idiots do need to take responsibilty if thinking using super high heat and melting metal is just something you 'pick up and start doing'. But anyting being welded I think thats worth mentioning, do some prep work and maybe take a course or ask a mechanic to watch some welding. My mechanic who just welded my exhaust says he doesn't do body welds, find somebody who does. I like DIY, but welding is definitely not something to make sound TOO easy just because you can find cheap equipment. Its sort of like electrical, yeah you can do it but there's a reason why it takes about six years to get a red seal. But I did like his energy.
I had a blast welding with brand new mig with automatic wire speed and automatic mask. I had only 2 hours of practice and getting my self familiar with that mig. After that welding was so simple because that mig made it easy. I get what you mean tho 😊
I’ve been welding on and off for the past 14 years and I remember learning from my grandpa when I like 7. I found it pretty easy and I think anyone can learn how to do it. Ofc I don’t weld professionally so my quality of work that I can live with may not be suitable for others.
That's right. When I did my welding course, all we used were nice big pro mig welding machines running on 3 phase electricity and using thick steel plates. Nice big, clean welds with tons of easy, beautiful looking, full penetrating beads . When I first tried doing my first car job I was literally back to square one! None of the techniques I'd learned really worked effectively. Holes, spatter, fires even 😬. I call automotive welding dirty welding cos I always make a right dirty mess of it. 😊
@Flakse Gaming That's not the point. If you do it as seen on the video you'll have welds that last years if not more. Also this is beginner friendly so not like he's trying to teach the professionals how to get better.
Chris fix is such a good TH-camr. He is someone who actually cares about his viewers, and is not in it all for the money. He goes back on old videos and actually reads all of the comments thanks for being a good youtuber!
meanwhile barberss, hairdressers and waxolgists are like, "put the shears down, don't try to wax at home everrrr" maybe you'll still suck at it, or maybe you'll suprise yourself with practice. Instilling confidence like Chris so refreshing
Any time you look up any repair procedure from a manufacturer's repair manual, removing the negative terminal is often the first step. It's a universal safety tip.
I had an Alfa Romeo 156 2.0 TS bought it with 255‘000km and sold it with 312‘000km on the clock, it was still running fine, it also never let me down! Alfas are great cars 😄
Awesome video! I've been a welder for over 20 years, specializing in TIG, MIG, MAG, and stick welding. When working with thin metal, I position the welding gun at an angle away from the puddle. This way, you don't add too much heat to the plate, resulting in a flatter weld and less grinding afterward. For metal over .38 inch , I point the gun at an angle into the puddle. Just some tips!
I've never stuck my head under a car in my life and ChrisFix makes me think I can rebuild a transmission and fix holes in cars. Thank you for the extremely knowledgeable content, I've been binge watching for the past week or so and have learned so much!
@@stackfire9601 trying to tell if this is an insult or a compliment. “You already know everything you can’t learn anything new”. Or “your brain is so pathetic you’ve reached max capacity”
EXCELLENT WORK! This is one of THR BEST TH-cam tutorials I have ever seen. I'm an older guy, I have done some of this work before and I Iearned SO MUCH. Your style is GREAT. No BS and random chatter, clear, articulate and friendly. Well edited! It's also apparent that you are not reading the material , which leads to a stiff-sounding presentation. On top of all of that, you have a very positive way of making challenging work seem very approachable to beginners. This is a truly rare skill. And you don't gloss over anything (which can be so frustrating) Lastly, the amount of REALLY useful tips you throw out like popcorn is really amazing. The vent techniques, disconnecting the battery, proper grounding for the weld, the flashlight trick....so useful. Honestly, I have never contributed to a TH-cam creator before, but I'm going to send you a few bucks. And subscribe. Thanks so much for a truly excellent presentation. Five stars.
When you had the gasless welder out my heart sank... but then you told us that you can't use it for sheet metal and I nearly cried with joy. Thank you, perfect video.
I’ve been doing my own rust repair before that car even existed but thanks to you, I need to make a shopping list for my ongoing projects like a nibbler for tight spots and flexible duct for my shop fan. I already have some items on hand like IPO to wipe down weld material, LED light for locating pinholes at night, plastic wrap and argon to displace atmosphere from paint cans. Great explanation of stitch welding and the use of reference marks, too!
I started of the same way, but a few months ago my car wouldn´t start so i followed ChrisFix video on how to find the problem and fix it :) Now the car runs perfectly :) And i saved a lot of money doing it myself, my car is going in for its yearley check-up tomorrow and i hope that it comes out with a clean bill :) Otherwise i can always find the answer on chrisfix channel :)
Fabricator/diy bodyman here. Excellent display of the basics and how to solve a simple issue, the only thing id have to add is that when you go to stitch the panel, to make it look as flush as possible and keep distortion to a minimum: I like to skip around each corner of the panel with one/two stitches and everytime ive passed 4 corners ill stop, wait 7 minutes to allow the metal to cool for a bit. Really allows you the option to take the beads down with a sanding flap to appear flush with the shape of the paneling around it👍
Car: has slight problem Chris: makes whole new car Also, isn't it funny that the shape of the hole and the shape of the cut sheet metal looks like an engine?
Im 57 and have always wanted to learn how to weld. This video is great. It was cool to be able to see you weld. Im sure ill have years to learn but this is very informative.
Just gotta get a welder, watch some videos, and start practicing and learning. As long as you wear a mask to protect your eyes, don’t weld anything except bare steel (no galvanized) and use hood gloves you can learn the basics without getting hurt.
FYI your mig welder’s wire spool is upside down, the wire should have a natural, strait line, for all you English speaking readers, the wire shouldn’t be bent, and is so, a little bend. For all the people who still don’t understand, the wire needs to come off the spool from the bottom on this specific welder, the manual is a true legend for dangerous equipment, look it throughout. Btw I think you had your weld settings almost perfect, if you look at the tack welds, you’ll notice a little dot, we call that a fish eye, it indicates (for me) perfect or near perfect settings, so good job man! Helpful how-to’s always are needed!
God bless you, brother! After 52 yrs in the tooth fixing business, I wish my dental instructors could have shown us 1/10 the enthusiasm for the work as you demonstrated with this fix. The vocal was wonderful and you provided lots of knowledge in an easy to absorb manner. You are a great teacher and I appreciate it.
As a girl, my dad and grandpa never really included me in fixing things or working on cars as much as they included my brother. I'm now 18 and have decided to learn it on my own. Thank you for teaching me Chris :)
That's not fair. If you were my daughter you would've been welcomed and encouraged to join under the hood and invited to get greasy with the brothers. Ive always said every girl at least should know how an automobile mechanically basically works (how the parts interact with each other and trouble shot problems) besides put gas in it and turn the key. So they don't get ripped off if they do decide to take their car to a shop. Good for you even if you have to research and learn on your own. Hey, just a suggestion look into learning some welding also it's useful knowledge and skill too, to go along with the automotive learning. Amazon has some welders at affordable prices. Yes welder brand seem to have decent welders at excellent prices that's good for beginner or homeowner use, with good reviews by TH-cam reviewers. Plenty of video tutorials out there. Just putting the idea out there if interested. 👍Good luck to you learning all you can.👍
@@whysoserious7014 Thank you for the support, it makes me very happy! I’ve welded a few times in school and found it very exciting and fun to learn a bunch of different techniques. My grandpa owns a welder so I might ask him if I can borrow it to practice:) You seem like an awesome guy, and thanks for the idea!
Lol a lot of women mechanics on yt when I had to rebuild my jeep tj front end ball joints and most of the steering joints ad well I came across them I was like well if they can do it I cld attempt it. I did took advice and tricks from 6 pple 5 yrs later everything is still good

This guy really knows his stuff. I was really impressed by his knowledge of metal surface prep. I am a paint chemist. 90% of our product complaints come from improper surface prep. He did everything right. The rust removal, the sanding, the solvent wipe, and all done with proper personal protective equipment.
So one needs to be a paint chemist to know proper surface prep? Comments like yours make me laugh. I’m just some dumb sob and I’ve managed to read the instructions on a can.
I really appreciated the mask and vacuum recommendation. There's no point in harming our health and shortening our lives over fixing a car. Taking a few small precautions can make doing what you love easier. Definitely subscribed.
I got an 08 Mazda 3 and this video helping me fix my holes underneath cause here in Ontario Canada you need a safety to get a car on the road and my car will for-sure not be able to pass but thank god you made a video to this I will be able to drive!
My criticisms: - You can use flux core for this application with the technique you've shown. It is much more tolerant to wind and contaminants and much cheaper to run. - Your tack weld had a crater in the middle. Stay on the weld a little longer. - Your first stitch weld had a void in the top right. - You really should wear leather gloves for welding. Vinyl can melt to your hand and gives no protection against heat or UV cooking your skin. Still, good stuff, enjoyed the video and you showed good technique.
In 2003 I was given an '87 LeBaron that needed a floor. The mechanic who taught me how to mig weld missed a lot of these tricks. If ever I have to do this again, I feel much better prepared. Thanks!

I would add to what others said, Don't feel down when it doesn't work out the first time. If something doesn't work out, chances are there were others who have done what you're trying to do so ask around, especially on forums if one is available or a fan club of your specific car. If you give up early you will NOT improve. Also, with the skills you pick up from working on your vehicle you get a chance to find a part time job at a mechanic shop if you wanted to. Good luck!

Welding is one of those things that has always seemed so intimidating, but you take the mystery out of it. Now I want to try. Thanks so much for all your great videos.
As a welder I can tell you it’s harder then it looks but also at the same time it’s not if that makes sense. In this application your welds don’t need to be great but in other fabrication you do need good welds
Little tip to make the 2 pieces line up perfectly easily and quickly. once you have the new metal roughly sized, clamp it or even tack it in place then use a cut-off wheel held on a 45* angled towards middle of the new metal and cut through both new and old. This is done to make it so you don't have a gap once it's done being cut. Works fast and it's easier to weld as it has characteristics of a lap joint.
Nice tip that is, it's a skill in it's own I guess. For a noob like me that seems hard because of the shapes and tight corners. But if you master it I imagine it get some nice fits!! If you use this technic you clamp or tack it on top of the old isn't it. First on the bottom side to draw the rough shape and then put it on top, clamp or tack it and then use your technic to cut it nice in shape. Sorry for my bad English, I hope you understand what im saying/asking! Cheers
@@sfuchs if the new piece lays on top of the original, you'll be cutting the original more in-board, and the new will lay down onto it. Try drawing this on paper ...and you might have cutting a wood board at a 45 angle in mind where you'd end up with a gap equal to the saw blade width, but if you picture two boards laying on top of each other, cutting through both, you find the bottom board captures the top board.
As a bodywork, welder & auto spraypainter for over 40 yrs, I must commens you on your dedicación & super skill. The only thing I do different is after after identifing the rotton spot I would use cardboard as a templete to make the patch for the area to be replaced in that way you only have to make one cut.
If you find yourself with that “keyhole” shape burning through, definitely turn up that wire feed speed(wfs), or turn down the voltage a tad. Essentially, turning up the wfs uses more power, and “cools” the weld. And of course, turning down voltage also achieves this same effect.
Lol I’m waiting for the day he comes on here “Hey guys Chris Fix here, and today I’m going to show you how to build a entire kit car from the ground up.”
Wire speed was perfect. Temperature was too hot. Which is why it was burning. I love the fact that you use Tack Welding instead of just spitting trash welds out! It looks awesome.
When stitch welding, there’s no shame in adding another tack in between each original tack, this really helps with heat balance to prevent warping. On top of that, it makes it so you don’t have to stop in between each bead being laid; ergo no time for a bead to get too hot resulting in burn-through. For a beginner this is good work. P.S. make sure to focus on fusing the two metals instead of being afraid of burning through, although it’s very important not to burn through, solid fusion is the main point of a weld. Nice work!
I love how you edit out all the swearing, kicking things, yelling at the sky and negotiating with yourself to not give up and finish the job. Makes car repair seem so pleasant. :)
I agree
Welding is cool
Welding gets it on hard tight
So It won't fall off and fail
It's stronger than bolts

Can you like, shut up?

I’m a retired mechanic/welder. I commend your good, basic information. Maintenance welding is not really taught in “welding school.” Good job.

And you don't gloss over anything (which can be so frustrating)
Lastly, the amount of REALLY useful tips you throw out like popcorn is really amazing. The vent techniques, disconnecting the battery, proper grounding for the weld, the flashlight trick....so useful. Honestly, I have never contributed to a TH-cam creator before, but I'm going to send you a few bucks. And subscribe. Thanks so much for a truly excellent presentation. Five stars.

@@chrisfix excellent video young Chris.👍👍👍
My criticisms:
- You can use flux core for this application with the technique you've shown.
Thanks for the tips!

Your not going to want to use flux for that thin of metal, it will just create more problems with all the burn through and distortion from the heat.
Is it really okay to use flux?

I agree with 'shawn Phto' - be independent not dependent and you will be so much better off when it comes to maintaining a vehicle.

That’s funny I’m intimidated by working on cars but not welding. Don’t be it’s awesome go for it especially what Chris used as a beginner
Cheers
Yep!
Are you allowing for the thickness of the cut-off wheel? Even with 45 *, you end up two edges angled a wheel thickness apart.

@@steveABCDEFG exactly lol.
If you find yourself with that “keyhole” shape burning through, definitely turn up that wire feed speed(wfs), or turn down the voltage a tad. Essentially, turning up the wfs uses more power, and “cools” the weld. And of course, turning down voltage also achieves this same effect.
We refer to those welds as "Gorilla welds". Not pretty, but damn stong.

Nice work!
