The best way to explain Darling in the FranXX is to understand that Nishigori only wrote the first 15 episodes. He turned the writing duties over to his co-director for the second half of the show. That's why the direction changes so drastically from fucusing on the characters to focusing on the mecha battles.
I will always believe that DarliFra should have ended with the revelation of VIRM's true identify and the end of Season 1, and the introduction of the Klaxosaur Princess. Season 2 could havr then picked up the story with a new focus, and started developing the secondary characters. With more time to work on the writing and build up to the ending, it wouldn't have been so overwhelming.
I think it's also important to note that the relationship between Mitsuru and Kokoro is as important as the relationship between Hiro and Zero Two. While the first half of the story is sbout the metaphor of the Franxx being a stand-in for sex, the second half drops that metaphor, and has Kokoro wanting to start a family in a totally literal and physical sense. Zero Two even admits that she cannot have children, and so the Klaxosaur form of connection is the only one she can have with Hiro.

    • @matthewpark3104
      @matthewpark3104 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

I actually found something out. Technically, Zero Two might not literally be unable to have children. It could either be A. She was fed a lie by APE so she wouldn't get distracted or B. because she is mistaken that since klaxo-sapiens can't reproduce, then she can't. However, canonically, the pair who controls the mecha have to have functioning fertile genitals, and therefore she would be incorrect in that sense. It could also just be that she associates having children with being human, like how she associated marriage with being human. Otherwise, another theory I've heard people talk about is that she might just not be able to reproduce with normal humans. Being half klaxosaur, it could mean that she just needs another half-klaxo hybrid person (Which is what hiro becomes since he ingested zero twos blood during childhood). However, these are just theories I've heard so take them with a HEAVY grain of salt

I don't think the shows 'revelations' could ever have been satisfying given how much of a rip off of Evangelion it is, without an original twist it was doomed from the start.

    • @richardryley3660
      @richardryley3660 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +29

@@kennethferland5579 I think the "twist", if you can call it that, is that Evangelion strongly implies that all relationships are toxic, and will lead to disaster, while DarliFra takes the approach that communication can repair even a toxic relationship, if those involved are willing to take responsibility for their actions.
Of course Evangelion is not telling the same story as DarliFra. It has a different point to make with its ending.

I just transitioned from comics to manga & anime over the last 6 months. I'm really impressed by the difference in quality between the two mediums. It's like they're from completely different worlds. I found Darling in the Franxx a few days ago, and binge-watched it over 2 days. It wasn't the dystopian future or the mechs. It was the personal growth of the core team, their friendships, their rivalries, the rifts, and their development from fighters to friends to family. It was also the on-the-go world-building and the behind-the-scenes building of the mystery about their society and world.

    • @JohnA...
      @JohnA... 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

It can be very difficult to explain the differences of Anime/manga to a culture that sees them as interchangeable with cartoons/comic books. I've tried to have this discussion a few times, but people seem to have a hard time realizing that, even though they probably have also seen "adult cartoons" (South Park, Shrek, Bevis & Butthead, etc.) that anything animated is just a kids cartoon and any drawn story is nothing more than a power fantasy comic book for thirsty nerds to drool over (though there are plenty of horny nerds drooling over manga/anime also). For some reason people don't like accepting that the artistic media actually gives a lot more freedom to stories because you can create something that "live action" has only just started being able to do with very high budgets, but it also has the same range of stories that any other media has from the standard power fantasy to slice of life all about boring office work.
Like you mentioned a lot of anime/manga is much more than the flashy battles. Some of the major differences you see in the media are the relationships that develop, the characters that get fleshed out, and a lot of the time an underlying moral story that you don't get in Western comics/cartoons. If we were to say that Superman and for argument Goku were some of the most popular/well known super heros you can see the drastic difference in the plots. Both are absurdly strong aliens (that for some reason look like humans), but where Superman just has to be under a yellow sun to be almost impossibly strong, Goku constantly gets his ass beat and has to over come it by working far harder. Superman might get punched a little but all he has to do is stand back in the sun to power up, Goku has to go through absurd training with even more powerful people and insane challenges to overcome the next bad guy. Sure Superman is still a "hero" to aspire to in many ways as all heros are, but the major Eastern difference is showing that it takes a LOT of hard work to better yourself and you are going to go through hard times before you make it through as well as there likely being even more hard times later on.
I've been watching anime for well over 20 years now, started as more of a respect for the artistic talents that I have never personally had, and then grew into more of a fascination of stories from a different perspective. Myself only recently getting into manga because I always though reading novels was just easier than small text bubbles with pictures to scan through, only starting now because I got a Quest 3 and can make the manga the size of a wall. I try to get others into it a little, but living in the States currently there is still a lot of pushback on the idea of any Eastern animated content not helped by the companies that have been turning them into "cartoons" for kids for years and the current disputes of people intentionally making changes to the original work because they don't agree with someone else's art (also partially because of the gross weebs that are horrible ambassadors of the content). I can see some of the issues, even I have a difficult time watching some of it because its not intended for adult audiences so mildly sexualized high school kids feels off, but its a different culture AND its made for high school kids so thats where the fan service is created for NOT for late 20s + dudes.

@@ooneybird27 I'm out and about so I don't have time to respond fully currently.
You misunderstood my post. It wasn't about you. I was saying that the general perception in Western people is not to understand the difference in the content. You are part of the new trend to accept anime\manga, regardless of your age.
I would have had zero idea your age from your post, and while I was already glad to see someone getting interested in the media I'm even more so now that you've said you are older and getting into something new.
So again I was in no way insinuating that YOU were one of those people, I guess I should have been a bit more specific but I felt as though through your own post that you also somewhat understood what I was talking about. So I apologize for the confusion.

I guess I'm not the only one who thinks the series should've ended at ep. 15.
The finale of the wedding episode could've been a great way to continue the theme of humanity, from learning about it to being forced to fight for it - the cast rebelling, going full Johnny Silverhand mode in a suicide mission against their overlords to give themselves and the mankind a chance at freedom. However that would end is another thing, but it'd be a hell of a lot better than the silly ayyliens shit the creators actually went with.
At the very least in the manga they were smart enough to simplify the ending, completely cut the space battle and all the goofy shit that came with it and sort of minimize the damage it did in the anime.

I literally stopped watching after the wedding episode.
Something came up in my life at the time as the show was being released.
After I remembered the show and went back to watch the rest of it, but I was involved in the community so I saw all the hate for it, and never bothered to finish it. Honestly it holds such a beautiful place in my heart. Watching this video was the first time I learned about KIRM and I was always curious about "papa" and the other things they didn't fully explain.
But there's this uncanny valley for me with the show. The feeling of having a childhood friend who calls me "darling" but my memories were ereased so I can't remember her.... gives me chills.... it's so familiar yet I can't remember it. Breaks me sometimes.
Especially the way 02 is like a glitch in the matrix of the "perfect" world. Almost like glitch in Wreck it Ralph which had a similar feeling. The "problem" that we are is our "humanity" but also our greatest power. fks me up real good.

I never understood why people hate on it. I get that it might be wrongly paced, too fast, thus confusing because of a lack of backstory, but I don’t agree with what he says in the video, it still aligns with the character builds.
The end is great, actually great, not happy just for the sake of having a good ending but still happy because of the last scene. And if you don’t like this, just read the manga and get the happy ending you wanted.
This show is a masterpiece, and it’s not a mech anime, it’s a life anime.
The whole build up, and for me, the most important part of the story, is the Jian. In China, JianJian is a name you’d use to say to a couple, meaning lovebirds. It’s originated from Chinese mythology and it has only one eye, and one wing and you know the rest…
What I found that made DitF and the ending most beautiful was this :
There is famous sentence in a famouse ancient poem "*
    天愿作比翼鸟,在地愿为连理枝"("On high, we'd be two
lovebirds flying wing to wing; On earth, two trees with branches twined from spring to spring." )
Two headed Bird and Sakura tree!
This is what the whole thing was written about, and from the start. So I’m sorry, but despite a few incoherences, it’s done an INSANE job at coming to this conclusion. And that’s why it’s been my favorite anime, I’m not scared to say it!

I didn’t dislike the ending either, so I can agree with you a bit. I also think the ending ending scene wasn’t the problem. It was episode 18-24, not that part of episode 25. It’s great to see them together after all that time again, see the real conection they had led them there, the concept with the bird and tree and all, and I think if that scene hadn’t been added we really would have crashed at the anime. I would have hated it with all my guts at least, and given it a 5/10 instead of the 9/10 i consider it till this date.
But I think for most of us The problem is the pacing. You make people uncomfortable and really confused when you throw so many problems and concepts at the same time at them, change completely the whole mood from mecha to an alien invasion all in 1 or 2 episodes without giving a hint before. The director cut off a lot of content that we could have seen from it too, so he literally made impossible for us to enjoy more content about it (like a season 2, ova, or whatever…) and it really seems like he didn’t know where to go. It’s simplicity that makes a story great, so even if you have 10 good ideas, as soon as you mix them and make the whole thing confusing, you are killing your story

Do you understand the concept that people don't like the 2nd half of the anime beyond the idea of having a "happy ending"? and that the anime isn't "Perfect"? Because it isn't. darling in the franxx was the second anime i ever watched. I watched it back in june 2018 and it absolutely blew my mind. I totally fell in love with anime after that and even tho objectively its not the best anime i ever watched its my favourite anyway cause i f love it and 2018 was the best time of my life. I get so much nostalgie from it its painful. I wish i could discover it all over again.
I think this anime got so much hate because people didnt undestand its true meaning. Its not about mechas its about humanity. Of course i could go even deeper into that but its a youtube comment lol

Darling in the franxx will always have a special place in my heart. Was my first conscious anime since i didn't know what anime was when i watched Inazuma Eleven. I was so shocked to find out it's hated. Also a cherry on top about the ending 4 that plays when Hiro gets his memories back is the fact that the voice actress of Zero Two is the one singing it

I honestly had Darling in the Franxx in my watchlist for years but never got past the second episode in my previous starts of the series until this year and I must say. Even as a first binge watch recently it will forever be one of my favorite anime's of all time. I guess I just have a thing for darker themed anime's but it was also just a perfect blend of wholesomeness and had a philosophical theme about what it means to be human, what it means to experience emotions, and to find love, etc. Where we also get to see what the absence of embracing those key points of humanity and compassion can lead to in a sci-fi extreme way.

I was there tuning in when it aired. The ending was super confusing and a total rollercoaster yhe first time arround. Upon rewatching it, however, it becomes much clearer. Since the first time i watched it i grew up a lot; I was single back then freshly in college and really quite immature.
rewatching it with my fiance after several years of adult life really gave me a different perspective on the show and jts deeper meanings. Having grown a lot in the years between watches i realized that dispite the fantastic setting and big fights and twists and turns the show was trying to tell an incredibly grounded story. Its about how messy relationships can be, all the pain and heartache and joy and frustration that comes with a real relationship. Its about the uncertainty of the future, being scared and vulnerable to the one special person that you chose and who chose you. It's about unrequited love, and the pain that goes with it. Maturing and falling down and getting up again and changing.
At its core it's about how important that one human connection is, and how everyone has their own struggle to find it. It may feel like insanity when you're going through the worst of it, but remember the Jian. The one winged bird cannot fly on its own. Just because you haven't found your other half doesn't mean you won't ever.
The ending is bittersweet. You are a team with your spouse fighting the world, trying to survive for each other and for the relationship. And sometimes the world fights back harder than you can and it's tragic and sad and messy and meaningless. But it's not always about the final victory.
Even if you lose, you can still have won. Just like we love those who we have lost, the story you leave behind vindicates you in all of the time you spent with that one special person. The good, bad, and ugly all culminating into your cumulative affect on the world. The ending is sad and its bittersweet, but what happened after the ending redeems it. Even if it took hundreds of thousands of years, you still won.
The show had a rather succinct ending, I thought. In it's final episode it went far beyond the characters we knew, showing us glipses of the people they became, and then farther beyond that. The love that was fated in 02 and Hiro finally had it's time in the sun. And it didn't show us anything more than the short exchange of words and eyes and meaning between the two of them because that's not what it was about.
It was never ultimately about showing the minutia and detail of these two peoples messy lives, or the perfect iteration they attained after the world went on long after they died. We saw a glimpse, a snapshot of the beautiful moment that started everything, the single point in the children's lives from which everything else unfolds. But we as the viewers are not entitled to see that. That privilege is for them alone, as is my privilege to share my life with the woman I love and nobody else, as is everyone's privilege to do the same. The story of the two perfect children goes on, unseen to anyone but themselves.
And that uncertainty we experience as viewers is beautiful.

I just wish there was an article or interview or something about why the show took such a drastic direction change after episode 18. The bad exposition dump, aliens out of nowhere, splitting up Zero Two and Hiro again despite already having resolved that, Strelizia Apus being somehow Zero Two, it just feels so weirdly out of place. The show before that was relatively consistent and it seemed like it was building towards a rebellion against Papa and APE.
I love this show despite it's faults, but I wish the creators explained what happened because it's very bizarre. It's like they just changed their mind halfway and wanted to make a different show. The manga apparently has a completely different ending too, probably influenced by the insane amount of criticism the ending got.
It just sucks because I love this show so much but there will probably be no answers (unless they're somewhere I missed). I miss when this show was being talked about and when Zero Two was really popular. I recently rewatched the show and I miss it ngl. Zero Two is still one of my favorite anime characters

This is a really good review, its nice to see that you have good taste in anime and we have some common opinions.
My opinion on Darling in the Franxx is that its a really good anime, gets messed up in the later episodes. When I watched it, the only other animes I have ever watched was Attack on Titan and Cyberpunk Edgerunners so I didnt have that high expectations. To me, it had a lot of parallels with AOT, not sure if it was just me but I enjoyed it.
Its a good anime, however it definently could have either ended shorter or extended to another season.
Introduction of VIRM or whoever the aliens were was super rushed and felt like "okay, we need to kill the main characters to end the story... have them sacrifice themselves for some aliens!"
But yeah, other than that this is a good anime and people should definently watch it. 02 is definently one of my favorite anime characters

And it reminded me why I enjoyed anime. The complex narrative and incredible character development. Was it flawed? Absolutely. I wish the last 4 episodes didn’t exist and the sex euphemisms make me incredibly uncomfortable. But at the same time, I can see the beautiful themes and great execution of those themes beyond those flaws. I don’t think I could ever truly hate Darling in the Franxx despite its issues.

in the official manga that went alongside, they did just finish it after Gran Crevasse. And finishing reading that feels infinitely more gratifying than finishing the anime did. DITF wasn't my first proper anime, that would be Initial D, but I hold it in similarly high esteem for the effect it had on me at the time - it was only my second or third maybe. I now look back and kinda cringe in some places, but that's just part of growing up. Everything does change, and nothing does stay stagnant as Goro's final monologue says - And I probably wouldn't quite be where I am now not for it

People hate on this because a few people started saying its a eva rip off and then everyone said that as if eva is the forefront of mecha and doesn’t take front ultra man and devil man cry baby and lets not start on the ass ending eva had please. That show was a clusterfuchk of BS and I am a fan but eva aint this god anime. People overlook references completely as a paying respects thing which literally every anime does. Darling is so good at character development and actually able to get its themes and messages across. Plus look at our world today, darling is lowkey becoming a reality, we are already half way there and society keeps heading that direction. Darling just may be on point and foreshadowing where humanity is going. Darling is a master piece

I only just remembered the fat guy being cucked. But it also had some of the greatest world building I've ever seen in an anime. There was 1 specific episode where they visit a city with humans with basically zero emotions. I don't remember anything crazy happening in that episode. But I remember the melancholy feeling it gave me as I watched. It wasn't rubbed against your face or anything. It was amazing. That episode made me realize that sometimes a whole series can have a single episode that will stand out, even after watching many other series.

This anime was my first time getting back to anime since pokemon, beyblade and bakugan way back when. and i was obsessed eventhough i never saw past episode 20 since a few months ago. And to me the ending isn't bad just a pleasant surprise cause who would have guessed it would end like this. But it was fun. Sure that might be my nostalgia talking or the fact that i aint fully grown up yet but for now i will defend it no matter what
