Land of the lustrous is the GOAT for cg animation. Once you get into it you realize that its a medium for visual storytelling just like any other and with the proper care and understanding it can help tell a story in a unique way from traditional 2D animation. The studio gave an interview on this and why they chose to do it the way they did and it makes a lot of sense.
What about Kinema Citrus? One of my favorite studios that’s made anime such as “Made in Abyss” and “Barakamon”. They are definitely a smaller studio, but you almost always see them in the credits of other anime productions because of the one big thing they SHINE at, backgrounds. Kinema Citrus is a master at making the background look alive, just like Ghibli does, if not better. Their craft pulls the viewers into the world and makes them feel as if they’re right in front of the characters. It’s so detailed and colorful that no other studio can compete. Just look at the world of Made in Abyss. The environment is so beautifully complex, and yet Kinema Citrus animates it all perfectly without batting an eye.
There's a bunch of studios missing so the title of this video is a lie. TMS (the other really old animation studio that made classic anime like Lupin III. It's also where Miyazaki got his start), Brain's Base (which was made from TMS and made its own sub studio Shuka), Doga Kobo.... I could keep going
Made in Abyss' gorgeous backgrounds is not something that should be directly attributed to Kinema Citrus, but to art director Osamu Masuyama and his company Inspired. That he was a Ghibli background artist says a lot
10:33 They are also known for the unfortunate Arson... which means you cry even harder because you realise that some of the people who made you feel these emotions aren't with us today

I agree, having binged it yesterday. Season one's animation is extremely rare because many veteran animators teamed up; even in the industry it was considered a special project. The animation for season 2 was actually very very well done, I just think a lot of anime watchers randomly decided they understood animation cause they watched one punch man and could thus make these claims even though season 2 opm is better than the vast majority of anime, even if it isn't cream of the crop(which I think it comes pretty close)

Great video! To add to studio Shaft segment however, their working conditions are some of the worst in the industry if not THE worst. MAPPA has the connections to brute force their way through terrible conditions with sheer numbers. Shaft can't afford that, so they instead resort to blackmail and abuse to get their main animators to do more work. Hiroto Nagata (man who animated every good scene in every shaft show for the past 4 years) talked on twitter about the sheer level of abuse he's being put through currently, like having breakdowns and getting sensations of being choked in his sleep. I think its comically funny that KyoAni, which does mainly slice of life, animates random-ass crazy good looking action scenes every now and then that are either on par with, or even sometimes better than, traditonal action titles. Nichijou, quite literally slice of life, has some of the hardest fucking scenes ever about the stupidest fucking shit. And I'm all for it 200%. Also, I love that I clicked on the vid for some slight ego feeding, for my opinion of KyoAni (thanks), but I love the industry slander, huge thanks
I'm glad you put the most amount of time into the working conditions of each studio as that is something most anime fans either don't know or turn a blind eye to
A-1 is absolute powerhouse, they can make good rom-com , good action. Direct different styles of animation. They only lack the capability of producing long run animes.
Every A-1 Anime have decent quality. They never below my expectations when it comes to animating. Like honestly, whenever I see an anime adapted by A-1, I just know they gonna be in good hands compared to J.C staff.
@@shafwandito4724 No idea how A-1 always seems to make Adaptations that surpass the source material. Sword Art Online, horribly written as it is, is adapted masterfully as animation. Until we do that as consumers, there's no reason for the industry to change.
@@ktvindicare I think this anime output is fine as long as the organization behind teams is more structured. Only have this team work on this anime, give them a break once it's finished, etc. And that can be achieved through training programs, outsourcing animators from other countries, and giving more benefits for employees.
@@ktvindicarehow about actually paying for anime subscription for once, Indian guy
@@ktvindicareWhile that's definitely true, the anime industry in Japan isn't the only case. There are a lot, and I mean A LOT of industries who exploit their workers like that. So Japan as a whole would have to change stuff like laws and workers rights. And yeah we consumers could have influence over it, unfortunately we overseas people aren't the main market for anime in this case. Meaning even if we consumers overseas boycott the anime, if the consumers in Japan don't do it and like the anime instead, it's unlikely that the studios would change their policies much or if they even would.

Ghibli backgrounds actually uses gouache! Which is a medium that sits between watercolour and acrylic, which creates that soft watercolour feel but the opacity of acrylic paints
I saw a really interesting TH-cam video by an artist (his name is Alpay Efe) and it said that Ghibli specifically uses something called Poster Paint by the brand called Nicker! I think my favorite studio overall might be KyoAni, mostly because of their beautiful animation paired up with adapting really good series like Haruhi, Clannad, Hyouka, HIbike Euphonium, Violet Evergarden etc.
In terms of sheer visual appeal I think the best studio has to be Ufotable, I think their animations are eye candy that no other studio has been able to replicate thus far. I like both Fate and Demon Slayer, but I wish they would have more variety in what they make

Mine would be mappa or kyoani, as well, Violet Evergarden is just great, overall the only anime I rate as 10/10. But also is great with animations, but the work quality and some sound tracks dont hit as hard
The environment is so beautifully complex, and yet Kinema Citrus animates it all perfectly without batting an eye.

i love made in abyss. this is truly a travesty

One of the best videos I’ve ever watched. Epitome of what TH-cam should be.
