It appears excellent to me, the grip ergonomics are typically-Walther outstanding, and my 16 year old granddaughter enjoys shooting it and has mastered basic handgun safety and firing techniques with it.
I had one of these , it was a beautiful gun accept too many issues while shooting it , so i traded it in for a Taurus TX22, which is awesome. You can get an after market captured guide rod making reassembling easier..

Big THANK YOU. for this. I bought mine in 2021 when I purchased my used Smith and Wesson model 64-5. My P22CA is great as long as it runs CCI. Mine is blue with a stainless steel silver colored slide. If I run Aguila ammo it's a jamomatic. Federal isn't much better. I only buy CCI and it's great and that is both LRN and Jacketed. I like the sights but I'm used to a low ramp and groove of my S&W 64. The P22CA is accurate too. My range goes out to 50 yards and it hits the target but if I get a 10 inch group at that distance I feel good. I'm used to the trigger but it's heavy in both actions. My 64 is a DAO and way lighter than the P22. It's fun and was very affordable but mags in Oregon are $48 a piece. Mine came with 1 mag only, I bought 2 more but from 21-23 I couldn't find them at any Oregon Walther dealer. Found a couple last year. Was in a accident and had part of my foot amputated so I have been stuck at home and no travel other than Dr app. Your videos help me make up for it. My Pups watch you too. They know your voice. Walther also goes above and beyond on their warranty. A relative bought one second hand several years ago. It had suffered some abuse and was sent back for repairs, with the new owner fully expecting to pay for the work. Nevertheless, came back fixed at no charge. The P22:is an unsung value.
I really enjoy shooting mine, it's a lot of fun. When I first got it I made the mistake of replacing the spring with a captured version and it started having stovepipes and misfeeds like crazy. As soon as I put the original spring back the problems disappeared and never returned. I have been told that this gun is much more forgiving of different ammo after it is well broken in, say 500 rounds or so. While breaking it in stick with higher velocity rounds My experience is also that it should be cleaned frequently.
The P22Q has held up well for me and it’s pretty reliable for a little .22 pistol. It’s a good little trainer for a student’s first range trip as a lighter alternative to a Ruger Mark pistol. I think these newer P22s fixed a lot of the jam-o-matic problems of the earlier models. I’ve taught a lot of beginners with this .22. The double action on the P22Q isn’t heavy but it seems even longer than it should. I shoot DA revolvers and DA/SA pistols regularly and I keep thinking “this should have already fired!” when I try the P22Q. So I’m impressed by the one you have.
I’m interested in how this functions. They have been on my watchlist but always wondered how they perform. I’m waiting to see your results and feedback. They look awesome. Walther makes some nice firearms.
JFI - you can purchase a captured recoil spring assembly from a few companies and they work just fine. Additionally, i found the pistol likes CCI ammo the best.
My buddy Gene used to quote an ancient saying that a rifle is still dangerous without lock, stock, or barrel, because a man can beat his wife with the ramrod. For context, Gene's first gun, purchased back in the early 1930's from Bannerman, was a Civil War Spencer carbine. I still have a few fat lead and copper rounds for this rimfire gun. --Old Guy
Good morning HR. I tried their early version of this and the bullpup 22 rifle . Neither lasted very long. The pistol was not very reliable and the rifle was a major pain to take down to clean. Looks like some better weather coming next week for some range time.
I bought my P22Q back in June this year, registered it online and they send me 200 rounds of Federal Punch for free! Been a good gun, my takedown lever broke and i ordered a new one but gun still shoots fine. Love it! Mine is black with nickel slide, non-CA model
I have 6 grandkids who all learned to shoot with this handgun. Probably 6K rounds through it. Never malfunctioned unless we tried the subsonic rounds - it never liked those.

The only reason I don't own the P22Q version is the need for a higher capacity standard magazine...12 at a minimum, preferably 15-18 at least as an option. Also no plate option. I really like the hammer (DA/SA) hammer fired design. A decocker version would be nice. I like the paddle magazine drop over a button style. I do also like the free state availability of a threaded barrel. The TX22 and the P322 and even KelTec .22 options are very dependable/fun options. Thankful for our varied options available from all manufactures.
Got one. I love how it fits my hand. I got it in 5" target. I like the extra speed of hypervelocity rounds like punch and stingers, they're moving out of that 5" barrel
I know it's a budget firearm (I see them new for $249 on PSA's website), but you'd really think they'd offer a "premium" version with an upcharge to get an aluminum slide. Friend's P22 slide developed a crack under normal use, and some of the secondhand zinc-alloy guns I've come across have started to disintegrate into that white powdery oxide if they had a scratch through the paint. I think personally if I decide to go with a gun like this, I'd probably just go with a Ruger SR22 myself- but it's something like $150 more.
Owned the P22Q version for maybe 10 or so years. Like the song goes, a Thin line Between Love and Hate. Persnickety with ammo. When it is good it is very, very good, when it is bad, back to Walther for cracked slide. Just yesterday, archived mine to the deep dark regions in the safe.
If you want to prevent damage to your firing pin and spare the destruction of any 22LR dummy rounds, get a box of #4-6 x 7/8" plastic drywall anchors. They make decent snap caps and each one is good for several dry fires. You may need a cleaning rod to punch them out because the firing pin will mash them out a bit.
Not sure what I can learn here since I've had one for quite a while but your appraisal seems pretty accurate. Like I said in your shooting video I like mine. Unlike yours in the shooting video mine does well with Remington Golden Bullets. The first thing I did before shooting was disassemble and clean it thoroughly. Maybe that made the difference?
Nice review. I've looked at those but never that closely. I like the ability to decock with the safety on. I really like my Cajun CZ75 compact but don't take it to classes or public ranges in general because it's not a decock model & I don't like putting it in double action around other people. It'll be interesting to see how easily the Walther drives a tack 😊
Nice review and looking forward to the range session. You may know this already but a #4-6 plastic wall anchor makes a perfect .22 rimfire snap cap. The extractor will engage it and a box of 100 is only a few dollars. I've used them for years in all my .22LR guns.
The back straps helped the pistol grow with my daughter’s hand and I think the safety should be opposite. Up is safe. Mine isn’t ca but still doesn’t have a captured spring either

the decocker on this is odd, its not like a Beretta, you have to lower the hammer down ? how to carry this thing ? the safety is a bit confusing coming from a Beretta 92, i do like the magazine disconnect feature on it because when i remove the mag I know its a non firing firearm , good feature for young shooters
I own an older Walther P22 and find it a little fidgity: ammo sensitive and lots of snag prone protrusions. I would be curious about your opinion comparing the P22 and the Ruger SR
This company at one time offered their P-38 in .22 cal. and I wish they would have stuck with that. I know everyone is tired of hearing about the old days but if you're from back then some of these guns can be a little hard to accept. It must be difficult for some of these companies to try and stay competitive. Great video.
Nice review. I am not a fan of these 22LR semi-autos. I prefer to use the Nelson Custom 22LR Converter on my 1911. It works reliably and gives me the same feel as my 1911.
This gun looks a lot like my first-gen. CCP in 9mm. The almost-pocket nine is striker-fired, of course. Despite a lot of problems with the early CCPs, mine works flawlessly, and the "ergos" allow for accurate, instinctive shooting. This P22 looks tempting! Oh, regarding "Valter," I was a German minor, and I'd rather chew a jumbo roll of tinfoil than hear a "W" sound in German. --Old Guy
i own one...these aint 'perfect' out the box...but if you simply swap out the recoil spring for an aftermarket one (Tendem Cross) it will then run on anything you load into it. Mine never gave me an issue from new, but i replaced the spring anyway after reading so many reviews about it. And as i have said...FLAWLESS shooting since...
This is an unsafe gun. Bought one with laser but it may not fire. Walther tells to keep trying different ammo till it works. If we engage then disengage safety it will not fire
Alas, they chose a zinc slide, for more profits. Even a cheap grade of steel would have been better! Or a Ceracote finish over the zinc? I have another older pistol with a zinc slide called "Zamax" metal alloy, and anywhere the zinc rubs over steel IT WEARS A GROOVE IN THE ZINC! I keep the slide rails and grooves WELL GREASED! The ejector pin has worn a DEEP groove, yet it still works. But for how long?.................................elsullo
Hi Point carbines are made from cast zinc alloy but they use enough metal in a well engineered design with no stress raisers. The P22 suffers from some characteristic failure points. The slide can crack at the port region on the left side at its narrowest point you can see the notch for slide release causing the stress raiser. The also crack at the forward serrations which are too deep and sharp. Have these been changed in this version?

My P22Q runs great on mini mag, but my TX22 runs great on everything. I can't think of anything bad to say about the TX22.
I wanted that Walther .22 but instead I opted for the Ruger SR22. Excellent video HR!
The Walther p22 QD has the decocker, you can however use the safety lever on this to dry fire the gun if you're worried about damaging it.
If the "QD" version is still in production, it doesn't appear on the Walther website.

Hopefully soon. The weather here took a turn for the worse during the course of the last 2 or 3 weeks. That curtailed my long-range rifle shooting.

Technically there is an internal metal frame, which is why the serial number is internal

Maybe. Still, the one I had was finicky enough that I didn’t want to have to find just the ammo it liked.
Yes, in German, the final r is diminished, something like what many people from England do.

Those reviews would seem to be accurate. I'm a fan of Walther, but this little pistol has some issues.
For the price, it's great. As for the problems, replace the firing pin and extractor arm. $55 fix.
I'm not happy about the zinc slide, though.

It does allow for a "cocked and locked" option, but that seems to negate the whole DA/SA idea.

It IS a bunch of steps compared to many more modern designs. I would not recommend this first to an inexperienced shooter.
