    Thank you for hitting this!
Jackie Blue is their best known hit, and is very different from this one, so needs to be next. But I ga-ron-tee that their song Chicken Train will put a smile on your face, for multiple reasons! (And Chicken Train would be great to share with the girls, too!)

If you grew up in the 80s, OMD stood for Orchestral Maneurvers in the Dark. But if you grew up in the 70s, OMD stood for Ozark Mountain Daredevils. Same initials, but you couldn't get much more different in terms of style! This OMD is from the great town of Springfield, Missourah!

My dad was a harmonica player☺️I grew up listening to him play “country-n-western swing” from the 60’s all through the 70’s and into the 80’s until his health started becoming a factor and he had to slow it down some 😏 He picked up a harmonica at the beginning of the 30’s when he was 6yrs. old and the time he was 10 he was playing for crowds down on the square 30yrs. before I was even born! He was a “natural.” I had this 45 growing up 😆 I used to play it all the time 😗 Thanks 🙏 for the memories ✌️🫶

Hey Family, Thanks for the ❤️ My dad would’ve appreciated it very much 🙏He passed away back in ‘14😇 He would’ve been 97 next month. You know he once had a chance to play on the Grand Olé Opry back in the 40’s but blew it off cause he he had something else to do 😳 I used to kid him about that telling him that he would be a country music legend by now and he’d just shrug and say “Well son I just do it for the fun of it 😊✌️🫶

Hey guys, real quick, I made a slight miscalculation on my dad’s age 🫢🤭 He would actually have been 98 come May 7th 🥳 The 5th would’ve been him and Mama’s 73rd wedding 💒 anniversary😳🤣 They’re both celebrating with the angels 👼 now 😍😇😌 She would’ve been 92 Sept.27th. They got got married in 1950. He was 25, she was 18. I came along 14yrs. later after they had 4 girls 😂!!

I just remember thinking what a terrible waste of God given talent and trying to understand why something like that would happen to someone like him. But thankfully his legacy still lives on 🙌✌️🫶

We had well water at the farm in Texas and our summer mountain home in New Mexico. At the cabin at 9,000ft, as a kid running around the mountain, we could safely drink from the clear mountain streams. Freshest water on earth. Falling as rain or snow through the pines and aspins, then filtered through the rocky, sandy soil...spilling down the narrow mountain streams, beginning a journey eventually to the sea

I’m 73..this was a great time to graduate high school and spread my wings. I grew up on a farm, very sheltered life. I discovered rock n roll and fell in love with festivals which I still attend. No damp sleeping bags or indulge in the hard stuff but still love the music.
As a high school teacher I introduced a whole generation to 70s rock n roll. I was the old white dancing granny in drop out prevention program. Absolutely loved my career which I entered at 50. I had a little too much fun early on, took me a long time to finish college😂
Nothing better than well water. My niece comes by my house to fill gallon jugs of my water to take back to college with her.

The Ozark Mountain Daredevils were signed by A&M records because they wanted to have a group on their label like The Eagles, who were becoming really big at the time. OMD never became as big as The Eagles, but they were really good and had a fair amount of success for a while. Their biggest hit was a song called "Jackie Blue" and other songs like "Country Girl" and "You Made It Right" also did very well. Another great song from them is called "Leatherwood."

  • @thomasalexander6883

I grew up near their farm north of Springfield, Mo, where they honed their craft. some friends of mine would go into the woods and listen to them play all night long. Those are some great childhood memories. In 2004 I saw them play at a an event held on a farm north of Carthage Mo. It was fall and by the time they took to the stage which was a buckboard with a stage extension on the front, the temp had dropped to the mid 50's and it started to drizzle. Some people left but you know I didn't leave. They started at 9pm they played till 11pm, took a 20 minute break, and played till 1am. It was one of the single most rememberable music events I have ever attended. Sometimes songs were separated by a quick note about what led them to write the song, other times, it was the main guy saying, "hears a song you have never heard before cause we ain't never played it for anyone", then the song would commence. Sorry for this long post, but one more piece of history for the Ozark Mountain Daredevils, one of their most famous songs could be Jackie Blue. There used to be a Denny's restaurant on Glenstone Avenue right of Hwy 44 in Springfield, Mo. The Ozark Mountain Daredevils recorded the sound track to Jackie Blue in the bathroom of that Denny's. They said the acoustics was perfect for that song. :0) The Ozark Mountain daredevils did their farewell tour within the last year or so. All the original members (except those that have passed) played and recorded together for 5+ decades. They are truly a southern music treasure that I am glad you guys gave a shout out to. Other Southern rock bands, The Allman Brothers, Molly Hatchett, Pure Prairie League would be a good start. I am sure I am missing someone. :0) Thanks for this! it was a good late night walk down memory lane! :0)

OK, you finally hit Ozark Mountain Daredevils, time for y'all to discover the greatness of Rory Gallagher. '70's Irish guitar god. According to lore, in an interview with Rolling Stone magazine, Jimi Hendrix was asked, “How does it feel to be the greatest guitarist in the world?” He is believed to have answered, “I don't know, go ask Rory Gallagher.” Bull Frog Blues and Shin Kicker are absolute tear the roof off rockers

Have they listened to Rory G before? Even if so, I don't think they've heard Bad Penny. Absolutely great kick-a$$ guitar work and lyrics. That one is on every play list I do. Soooo good!

My sister used to live in a 200 year old farmhouse that was at the bottom of a mountain. She had a spring coming off the mountain that went into a holding tank in the basement. It was the best purest cold water I've ever had.
This was a cool song too. Never heard it before.

Woo Hoo didn’t expect you guys would ever go down this hole but here we are and, Hot Damn!!! This is one of their two best known songs, the other was Jackie Blue, but certainly not their two best. They were not extremely commercial but had a huge very loyal following. As a result, their best songs weren’t the few that made the radio, but rather the album gems loved by their fans, which I’m sure you’ll hear about in Comments. Their ability to blend folk, rock and bluegrass was in my opinion unmatched. Everyone has their own “best” and there is no wrong answer. My “best” and favorite of theirs is Fly Away Home, with an almost gospel bluegrass feel, but you definitely want to also check out Standing On A Rock, Country Girl, Homemade Wine, Leatherwood, Black Sky and Chicken Train (my grandkids favorite). Was just listening to this CD today and whaddayaknow, you guys came through! Hallelujah (that’s in Fly Away Home a lot).

Harmonica player Steve Cash just passed away in 2019. The Daredevils still play around the MO area a couple times a year with remaining members John Dillon and Michael Granda. One of the main reasons the OMD didn't achieve greater acclaim was their love and desire to remain living in the country where they grew up near Nixa, MO. A couple of the members were already married and had kids, and they refused to continually be on tour and away from home for months at a time. In the '70s, the big rock bands were expected to tour most of the year, and live in Los Angeles to be recording in the studio when not on tour. The Daredevils refused to do either. KSHE radio in St Louis helped make the OMD regionally popular by regularly playing songs off the "Quilt Album" on FM radio. Love the Ozark Mountain Daredevils.

WOW! KSHE Radio. Memories flooded back when I read that! I lived in St. Louis 72-74, and listened to KSHE, but my favorite was KADI, The Rock of St. Louis! OMD still sound as good today as they did back then!

I've loved this tune and have been singing it at family gatherings since 1978 -- my brother played guitar as did many cousins -- seeing an 8 year old boy singing "You gotta raise a little hell" must have been an interesting sight. They are very eclectic -- I like the tunes "Spaceship Orion", "Colorado Song," "Road to Glory," and "Within/Without." Similar to America a bit but unique for sure -- it's worth listening to their more complex side -- I can see both of you liking the tunes I named. All of these songs are on their self-titled debut (just like this song.). I dig the thoughtful way you all analyze all of these different genres and tunes. Thank you!

My great grand parents in Mississippi had an old fashion well. My cousins and I use to fight over who would get to put the bucket down and crank it back up... My grand father told me about him and his brothers digging that well by hand when they were teenagers. There was an old aluminum ladle hanging on a nail by the well... We'd drink the water right out of the bucket with the ladle. It had the sweetest tasting water and it came out so nice and cold even in the summertime. I miss them and their old farm.
