    Found this online
“In a 1985 interview in Hitch magazine, James said the title of the song came to him while he was reading the Biblical Book of Revelation:
I took the title from the Book of Revelations [sic] in the Bible, reading about the New Jerusalem. The words jumped out at me, and they're not together; they're spread out over three or four verses. But it seemed to go together, it's my favorite of all my songs and one of our most requested.”
“According to James's manager, James was actually inspired by his readings of the Book of Ezekiel, which (he remembered as) speaking of a blue Shekhinah light that represented the presence of the Almighty God, and of the Book of Isaiah and Book of Revelation, which tell of a future age of brotherhood of mankind, living in peace and harmony.”

Yes, the "new earth" promised by God himself ,brought about by him and not humankind, but his gift to humankind, with no more suffering, no more tears. "On earth as it is in heaven, when God's will is done. (Revelation 21 :1-5/Matthew 6:9,10 /Daniel 2:44!)the best - is yet to ccme!

I think, it could be a rumor, that Tommy James had studied the Bible, let's just say with a certain organization. He learned a bit! He called the book the "Crystal Blue Persuasion." (the book, a study aid, was blue) Revelation 12 is eye opening.

Right ...but without knowing *that* is the explanation about the origins of the song you could easily enough be thinking the song is about a wonderful LSD trip after dropping * Crystal Blue Persuasion* Acid

@@hasslefree1848 That's what I thought when I was a teen. It wasn't until I was an adult & started listening to the artists interviews & documentaries that I learned I did NOT know it all back then. My Dad was right after all.

@@janabraam7963 Right....There was a number of songs written based on LSD trips such as the Song: *Magic Carpet Ride* by Steppenwolf.....Then there was the song by Three Dog Night: *Mama Told Me Not To Come* where in the beginning of the song the Lyrics say: Have some Whiskey in your water, some SUGAR in your Tea and alluding to LSD in the Tea by way of Sugar Cube Acid ( LSD ) that was in circulation and popular in the form of a Sugar Cube having a measured dose of LSD applied to the Sugar Cube......Beside the other kinds of LSD that was sold in pill form and known as Purple Microdot or Yellow Sunshine or Window Pane Acid ( a small transparent thin *chip* of freeze dried acid formulation ) Or Blotter Acid by way of a small square of sheet paper with a measured drop of LSD 25 applied to the square piece of paper
Numerous Songs based on LSD and LSD trips.....They say??? Santana and his band were all high on LSD when they played Soul Sacrifice at Woodstock in 1969...Maybe ..maybe not ...Cheers

Tommy James was a born again Christian when he wrote this. The lyric “when He looks down” refers to God looking down on all of his children in every nation. The lyric “the sun is arising” can also be “the Son is arising”, referring to Jesus.

This is SUCH a fabulous Hippie song. Flower Power, Peace, Love and Understanding, everybody get together try to love one another right now, good vibrations, let it go, open yourself up to the possibilities, everyone is beautiful, we can change the world, ALL THAT!! It's a tragedy that it couldn't stand up to the onslaught of "the establishment", moneyed interests, military interests and the general unenlightened state of humanity at this time. But, for a while there, there was a slim chance. Who knows if we'll ever even get another one?!

It was spur of the moment..'James realized afterwards that the title fit with his budding interest in religion, with the words sourced from the Biblical Book of Revelation. “I was also going through a change in my life,” James says. “I was becoming a Christian at that moment. So this all seemed to fit together. We took it back to the hotel room and wrote it. We didn’t really use the poem, just the title. To make the rhyming scheme work, I needed one more syllable, and ‘blue’ sounded like the right word and it became ‘Crystal Blue Persuasion.’ Eddie Gray played guitar for me then, and he came up with that little riff. Mike Vale and I wrote the lyrics and it just came together, just kind of fell out of our face right there in the hotel room.”
