- The movie Rocky IV turned Dolph Lundgren aka Soviet boxer Ivan Drago into a Hollywood star. Exactly 30 years later the Fulbrighter Dolph Lundgren shares his personal fight worth fighting with a live audience at the Broad Stage in Santa Monica. “If you heal yourself you can heal others” is the message of this surprising TEDxFulbright talk about a fighter who became a social activist.
Best known for his performance in Rocky IV as Ivan Drago, Dolph has starred in over 50 films. He was awarded a Fulbright to MIT after graduating at the head of his class in chemical engineering at the Royal Inst. of Technology in Stockholm. He also completed an exchange program with the University of Sydney.

He embodies the old adage "more than just a pretty face". He's right, compassionate, cares that he hurt people and cared enough to go back, apologize, and ask for forgiveness, and then has gone on to help people. Truly a decent human being.
Dude has 2 undergraduates and a master's degree in engineering, plus a scholarship at MIT. Then became and actor. Damn if he isn't an interesting fellow.

@@angelf3365 Ask God's forgiveness first. If you can believe he forgives you, then the self-forgiving also starts. Otherwise there would be no hope for those who have done more bad than good in their lives.
But Jesus forgave the criminal on the cross next to him. He hadn't likely done much good in his life, or at least he had gone astray enough to be executed as a criminal. But he regretted, and Jesus saw this in his heart - and he was forgiven.
Unlike the other on the other side of Jesus, who mocked them both, and was not forgiven, because he rejected the hand reaching out to help him.
Wouldn't you forgive your kid, who has done a lot of bad, but comes to you regretting, and you see that in his/her eyes? Likewise God does for us. He cares for us. He sends some to tell you about this. If not me, then someone else reminds you of this.
But you don't have to answer to me, if you think I'm a religious weirdo - by all means, keep your distance if you want. Just turn, run, to God - open the Bible where it speaks about Jesus.

That took a lot of courage for Dolph to open up about his personal abusive life about him self. He is a sweet and caring warm hearted man.
This video bugged me for a long time for some reason and I think it’s because I realized Dolph seems to have really forgiven the past. You can tell he forgave his father at least. Dolph opens by telling us his father was abusive but later that he was a good guy and that he loved his father. I think he outgrew his trauma or at least accepted it. It’s almost like he pities the way his father was in terms of the abuse he took from his father, but knows there was some element of a good guy in there. I’m not at all condoning abuse just impressed with Dolph’s growth.

@@PRSouthernyeah believe it or not no matter what fathers are always like our superheros as children. You see while describing the abuse he points out his positives like tall, handsome, big, intelligent, funny guy. Even though he had such bad memories with him, deep down we all want to impress our fathers and love them. Some of are lucky to get fathers who truly are heroes and worthy of being respected but some are unfortunately not so lucky, but even then deep down we hope that maybe if do this one thing we'll finally be loved. He did a recent talk years later where he goes more in detail and mentioned that all his academic successes drive behind them was to prove to his father how he was good enough, especially MIT, his dad was a big fan of MIT and getting there was another way to prove him wrong.
Fortunately I was lucky enough to have a loving father but I have seen some bad fathers, and seen how badly children crave to be accepted.
It is very similar with mothers too, children really need loving parents. If you had loving parents you really should be grateful about life, if not make sure to do better if and when you become one

The fiercest guys in the world can be the most gentle ones in the world, I was literally sacred of this guy when I saw him as Ivan Drago in Rocky 4, but here he is, a calm and a wise man about life, it is absolutely amazing.

Dolph Lundgren has to be the most perfect man... 6 feet 5 tall, super fit and muscular. insanely handsome, incredibly intelligent and also very masculine but at the same time humble and not afraid to show his emotions.
I'd say the perfect height for a man is about 6'2 but no more than 6'5". The heights of many well-known rock-stars, models, actors, and athletes that are considered attractive. Not to mention about 2/3rd s of all CEO's in the Fortune 500 companies are about 6'2 or taller.

Domestic abuse toughens people.. My dad use to beat me too back in the Philippines as a kid when his drunk or, when i did something wrong.. Till i grew up and learning boxing and grappling from my school coach under my dad's nose.. So i gave my dad a bit of a sweet revenge out in our back yard after all the pain and misery he caused me and my brother over the years of abuse. I actually put my dad to sleep after a quick scuffle.. Woke up the following day all sober with a broken nose and fractured pinky asking for forgiveness..

Amazing, you take one look at Dolph and think WOW, he is handsome, obviously intelligent as can be, movie star and he has it all. Then you hear him tell his story and realize how damaged he was. Most people only see the incredible exterior and never realize what is going on inside someone's heart and soul. Beautiful story and so glad he has been able to heal and forgive.

Loved this. Buried trauma always bubbles up later in life. That delay in processing is damaging to your mental health. Getting through that requires professional help. It worked for me. God bless this man for his message.
My dad did the same UNTIL I turned 14 and had grown some from weight training with a guy down the road. So 1 of his usual day grumpy and ruthless days he went to swing 1 at me and i grabbed his hand and said hey I’m NOT 5 anymore and in THAT MOMENT with the look on his face i could tell he too had bn hit by his dad so I felt really sorry for him and gave him the biggest hug he had EVER HAD . To this day neither of us has ever brought it up because it’s just something for both of us so HEAL FROM SCOOBS UK.

Dolph Lungren strikes me as a very interesting, articulate, and humble person when it comes to opening up about his past, the ups and downs in his life, and his humanitarian work outside of the film industry. He has more intelligence and integrity than most people care to give him credit for and if more people were as gracious as him the world would be a better place.

To see vulnerability in a classic tough guy, after a very hard life, is a miracle. Forgive others, forgive yourself. Good stuff. I am on a forgiveness journey now, and have discovered that I need to forgive myself first before I forgive others. Having done some of that, I find that I have less to forgive others for.
Always though he was so cool in the 80s and did not realize how much he went through awesome speech.
I always knew that Dolph was extremely intelligent, but I had no idea of the abuse and trauma he suffered at the hands of his father! I could really relate to his story and when brought up Fight, Flight or Freeze it really hit home for me! I am a retired US Army NCO who served multiple combat tours in Iraq and I suffer from PTSD and I think they should show this video to all PTSD Soldiers! Healing starts from within and before you can love someone else you must first love yourself!

I'm actually inclined to agree. A lot of the guys I've seen come back (Or known from the military) and turn to things like suicide, it's not the "Trauma" it's the uselessness. The lack of purpose, so to speak.
And I always thought Dolph Lundgren was created in a lab somewhere to advance the human race.

Flawed reasoning. It wasn't just his father who made him the man he is today. We all have our own traumas and fears. Lundgren's awakening came from hope, hoping for a better life and with that came the self-discovery. He could've also became an abusive person just like his father or became a drug addict to escape from his pain, but he didn't.
So it isn't about what happened, it's about what you make of it.

I suddenly was three yrs old again. This really "hit" home tonight. The family secret. It taught me to always be in survival mode. I don't trust blindly. I forgave a long-time ago & God blessed me with a great compassion and great love for young innocent children. I'm so grateful God led me to watch this tonight. I grew up with "tough love", I was actually more afraid of my mother than my father, I learned more out of fear than respect. But in my later years, I appreciated that a lot of the "disciplining" came more from love than malice. I forgave my parents because I'm sure they where raised with more discipline than they imparted on me, I took care of them both until they both recently passed. I didn't incorporate their methods in my ways but they taught me right from wrong. I miss them terribly and the last remaining years I had with them where full of healing and communication.

I’m sure that Dolph’s father, troubled though he may be, is extremely proud of the man and human being that Dolph became. What a thoughtful and well considered perspective he brings to his upbringing. No self pity or groveling for ours. He is a self made man and has a lot to be proud of but is as hunble as can be.

Back in the 80's, he did a demonstration in a karate tournament in LA Calif. along with a lot of other celebrities. I was with the school that organized the tournament. I took a pic with Mr Lundgren. He was very kind and approachable. God, I never knew this man I took a picture with, was fighting his demons while I was fighting mine!!

That is one of the strongest things I have ever seen, has brought me to tears, a film star from my childhood, who I can relate to on some levels, being so honest and open. What an amazing man Dolph Lundgren is. So brave to look inside himself and forgive those he hurt and his father. And he still looks incredible.
It's not about forgiving those whom he hurt.. he sought forgiveness from those whom he hurt as well as being able to forgive those who hurt him.

It is astonishing how different someone can appear to you when you learn about them from the perspective of their origins. History certainly changes our perceptions. He just spoke my life to back to me and I never dreamed my truth would be spoken to me out of the mouth of dolph lundrgren. This was such a poignant moment for me. What a wise articulate brave soul. Much respect for him.
I grew up in 80s 90s and i can remember him only as a tough looking actor in violent movies. What I admire about TED is that people can share so many valuable experiences, emotions and stories. This talk took my breath away. I feel rather hopeless these days after all these attacks, info wars, mess on the internet creating mess in our souls but people like him awake the good old me inside me. What a great man, Dolph! Thank you so much for going such a long and painful way. Bravo.Bravo!

I too, was abused as a child. The hardest thing to do was to forgive my mother. She never accepted my forgiveness. But my conscience is clear and my life is better.
My sister verbally abused, humiliated and taunted me, and sometime physically to. I got panic attacks from it at the age of 16.
Jerry, I'm sorry to hear you had to deal with that. I always thought that "forgiveness and healing" is generally good, but you still have to remove yourself from the person if they're habitually like that, right?
I can't even discuss this with my mom. She is in denial and acts like nothing ever happened. The other thing is she has a huge problem with accepting responsibility she likes to shift the blame. I realize trying to get an acknowledgement, or some love and affection I never got, is like going to an empty well for water. I realize my mom probably has some trauma herself and never got help or came to grips with it. I guess the best way to look at it is to understand this and realize that the way I was abused was not personal but a disease passed on by family. She is a victim herself. What I want to do is no longer be angry and do not want to pass on these traits to anyone else. But, there is a deep sadness within me that I never really had a mom and no family really. It all could have been very different.
Jeff K - You have to end the relationship and/or keep a distance with boundaries. You need to remove yourself from that environment and "system".
RegainingLife thanks for your input and advice. I'm sorry to hear about your abuse at the hands of your mom (or if you prefer, at the hands of the disease). Sounds like you're on the way toward healing.

No matter how handsome / beautiful or famous someone is, we all will experience trauma in our lives. How we handle this trauma affects us and others. Learning to deal with it and turn these negatives into positives is very important. Thanks to Dolph Lundgren for sharing what he went through so it could help others. It has helped me.

Brilliant, wow. Here's a man's man. So glad I stumbled on to this. I saw him enter Golds Gym Venice in the Summer of '84, I think it was, when he was training for Rocky. The man absolutely lit up the room with his presence. Now I see he was a true superstar in the making.

Add...sadbasturd99 has no clue about steroid use. Nor does he know DL. What made this "sad" guy think DL is using? He's slim. Was never suddenly abnormally huge. Even when he was in Rocky 4 Dolph really wasn't huge. He was 6'4 muscular/lean. If Stallone really thought it was needed he could have asked Dolph to bulk up more. Have him trained by pro bodybuilders or Powerlifters. But they went for the build he had then. Wasn't that vascular even then. So, what drugs he might have use wasn't that much. Likely stopped (if he DID use) after R4...he was never "suddenly massive"...no signs of being on the gear...I thought he could have been bigger for R4.
Dolph. On the surface looked like he had it all. Movie part in Rocky 4, dated Grace Jones, was an Euro Karate Champion, spent time in MIT studying chemical engineering (try getting into any professional program in any college...let alone MIT )...then goes on to help (be a part of) people who were victims of human traffic-ing. How many people that went through what he had as a child just end up crashing/burning? He could have gone the other way. Never "come back". Never felt the desire to fight for his life and achieve. Let alone help others.

I stood in front of her, put my hand out, and I had one thing to say "I'm sorry". That day she gave me the greatest gift a person could ever give another human being - she gave me forgiveness.

We don't usually know famous people, we only think we do. All the info about them are mostly gossip & straight up lies made up by tabloids for money. But in reality many of them had a hard childhood and that's what pushed them towards success - famous actors, artists, athletes etc. In the end, we are all human beings with complex stories. At the age of 30, I'm just starting to live, after years of vegetation and suffering from bipolar depression. So glad I clicked on this video. Dolph Lundgren is very articulate, intelligent, charming, with a great sense of humor, he is very good storyteller and I absolutely adore his voice - so soothing ! Remember that it is never too late to bounce back and change your life, as Dolph said. Love & all the best, for all of You, from Poland
