When I was getting my education degree we took a “what is your education style” quiz and I remember Montessori ranked third. Now I remember why it’s not #1. After raising 4 kids, I know that there is nothing wrong with praising your kids for doing things like going potty. No, no one cheers me on for going to the bathroom, but I do get praised for things like making dinner, deep cleaning the house, etc. Yes, that’s part of being an adult, but the same holds true for someone who goes to work; Raises, promotions, etc. potty training and cleaning up spills are part of my toddler’s chores but they still deserve a job well done.
Otherwise, I enjoy some of the cute activities and your home set up! Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

    • @HapaFamily
      @HapaFamily  5 ปีที่แล้ว +60

You can certainly ensure that your tone of voice is one of pride, and if you feel a need to praise, to do so without being excessive about it. A simple “thank you” also goes a long way for other things, instead of the highly overused “good job” that loses meaning after a while. Thanks so much for watching.

    • @carolinebarley
      @carolinebarley 5 ปีที่แล้ว +19

Yeah I totally agree! Like when my little guy finally waved at someone on his own and said hi, I was so happy and said good job. If he does something new and does it well, I want to praise him. When he does it for the 50th time I probably won't praise him lol. When I went to the bathroom for the first time after birthing him, I celebrated! And told my husband and he was so proud too! But yeah this vid was super helpful.

She's on point with the "avoid the bells and whistles on a potty" suggestion. I have 3 kids. I bought my youngest an elmo potty that laughs, flushes, etc. It was nearly impossible to keep him focused on the task at hand. After a few days, I went and bought a simpler one. Worked so much better!

    Looove this video!
Starting our potty trainning today 😊🙌🏼
    My notes:
    Staying dry
    Predictable times during the day
    A Sign
    Environment
    A place
    A Step stool
    A small potty seat
(Going to the bathroom is not supposed to be intertaining. It's a natural thing)
Small basket with just the essentials: toilet paper and clean undies.
When going out: using pull ups might take a bit longer..
Try: Waterproof diaper covers or piddle pads for car seats and strolers, or a towel...
    Diapers at night time
    It's not a 3 day process
Keep it simple and stress free:
    Put her in undies
Lots of accidents for the first couple of days
    Take her every half hour
Don't ask her if she wants to go, say "it's time to use the bathroom" instead
Sit for a few minutes only, not for long
    Clean up together
    Montessori=natural consequence:)
    Acknowledge but no praising
Hardest days are first couple of days. After that she'll get the hang of it, showing signs that she need to go bc she's verbal
    🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼

I used this method with my first child and he was independent by 24 mos. I have another child who is 5 and still has accidents. Folks, if you try this method and it doesn't work after a few (or six) months, please don't make the mistake that I did and switch to a reward/punishment method. It turns out my second has neurological issues that prevent him from feeling when he needs to go. Be patient with your kids.
Now I am setting out to potty-train my third and hoping it will proceed more smoothly than the last.

Great! Other readiness points are: confident independent walking & able to/almost able to take their pants and undies off and on. Also, when buying a potty/step stool, make sure the potty is low enough/step stool is high enough for them to keep their feet firmly planted on the ground/stool. This is important for easy bowel movements; preventing boredom/frustration/discomfort/constipation.

Honestly, since I had my first baby girl 2 years ago, your channel were and still the most beneficial material I have ever came across in the Montessori approach. Thank you so so much, your advices had guided me through so many stages and phases, and the relationship we have developed me and my baby girl has been flourishing more and more thanks to this beautiful philosophy and way of raising and accompanying the child, il is full of modesty respect love and consciousness ❤❤
And the best part is that you make sound so realistic and faisable since you explain the essence and purpose behind every activity and encourage the parents to reach the goals with they have with no need what so ever to buy the best toys and products on the market.
Because that is when a parent gives up totally when everything about Montessori becomes a matter of money and not that of attention and availability of the caregiver and the interaction with the current needs of the child.
Thank you so much again for your beautiful contribution in this regard it is very much appreciated and helpful ❤

Thank you! This is so helpful as I was wondering how to potty train my boy without using the quick three day method that almost looked like a traumatic thing for the child in other videos. The only thing I would like to do differently is praise and celebrate when he learns to go. I think as adults it would be nice to praise and celebrate with each other when we accomplish things anyway. Maybe I need to learn more about the dangers of praising a child too much. I find it highly enjoyable to celebrate with my child so its hard for me to imagine letting that go.

A game changer for my second son was setting him up for success. When he was a baby I started sitting him on the toilet after he woke up in the morning and after he woke up from nap. That was a natural time when he would always pee. I also signed toilet every time I took him and while he peed. I think that's what taught him the sensation of release while on the toilet. Eventually he started signing and asking to go unprompted. Then refusing diapers. We're not all the way there yet (he's two tomorrow!) but so so close and completely lead by him.
We don't use little potties (the kids always want to play with them) and with my first I had to basically train him to use the little potty and then train him again to use the toilet. We have a potty seat but my youngest just uses a step stool and sits on the toilet backwards. Feels safe for him and he can get on and off independently.

I potty trained my four children when they were 15 months old. Upon arising after they had been asleep all night, first thing in the morning I put them on the potty. No guesswork here, we all urinate when we wake up. Then you celebrate with their favorite treat. I put them on the potty every 15 to 20mins so that I could get a good idea when they potty throughout the day. This mother stated that no one claps for you when you potty. Well that’s because you already know how to potty. When a child is learning any new life skill or task there is absolutely nothing wrong with praising them for their accomplishments. Shalom

    Small space tips:
If you're trying to navigate this with a small bathroom, there are tools that can be used to help modify an adult-sized toilet to fit little bums. Instead of a removable potty seat like shown, there are toilet lids with built in potty seats. These are more seamless and won't take up extra room in a cramped bathroom. Instead of a step stool, getting something like a Squatty Potty can also work instead of a step stool because it'll help the child reach the toilet, but it's designed to fit around the toilet. As a bonus, it's something that can be used as an adult, so it still serves a purpose even when a step stool is no longer required.
(And a well-placed potty seat in the trunk of a car can be useful on car trips or visits to the park where there's no public restroom available and you have a toddle who needs to go NOW [so, 5 minutes ago])
Sweatpants or pants made of thicker material are also good for helping to minimize messes when wearing regular underwear.[I speak from personal experience] . The thicker material can help absorb the liquid.
And PLEASE be careful with things like piddle pads, etc. Anything that goes between your child and his or her carseat that is not directly approved and designed by the car seat manufacturer for use in the particular carseat can be a safety hazard. If your carseat manufacturer does not have a product for your child's carseat, CONTACT them to find out you best plan of attack. Even something as seemingly unobtrusive as a thin puppy pad can void safety warranties and, more importantly, endanger the life of your child. When it comes down to it, there may be times when it's best to hope for the best and prepare to pick up a new carseat at the grocery store. Carseats are expensive, yes, but compared to the safety of your child, there's really no contest.

I apparently just decided to go to the potty when I was two and I was potty trained (according to my mom, my siblings were nightmares), but even at age 8, I was still wetting my pull up every night. It took this wireless beeping device that sensed when I started peeing in these special underwear, so I woke up when I was peeing in my sleep! It actually worked within a week or so!! So we tried the 3 day potty training method and she WAS potty trained until we went out of town and it’s like she forgot everything because we got out of our routine, etc.
I didn’t like that I had to give her a gift or reward each time but I was just trying to follow the book lol.
It was waaay complicated and stressful.
After watching this video I feel like I did everything wrong lol 🤦‍♀️
Even bought a flashy potty, cheered and clapped and put pressure to accomplish it in 3 days.
We have not mentioned the potty in months for her to reset her brain of poor learning habits.

Hey! So when my son was about 10 months old I started learning about elimination communication and also the Montessori method take on toilet training and your videos was one of the first I watched!
Of course looking back I wish I would have started learning about these things before I had my son. 🤷🤦
And I always try to share your video with people who are "potty training"
I started with the elimination communication and then a few months later once he got the hang of it i started implementing the Montessori method in it and my son was successfully and fully using the toilet by the time he was 22months old! 🥳🥳
So thank you so much for making this video!
I think the key is to not give up, keep it positive, have patience for the many many clean ups, obviously not punish or reward and stay consistent!
I'm sure that if I would have been more consistent in the first few months that my son would have been done using diapers much sooner.
But I got discouraged because I let other people's judgment get to me.
My son is and was ready to learn! I understand that every child is different...but I really do feel that we live in a culture where people are waiting so long to teach their kids to use the toilet just because thats what everyone else is doing...
America needs to stop waiting till their kids are 3-4 to start getting them on the toilet!! Our kids are capable! ❤️
Also maybe I just got lucky but my son has never peed in his sleep. He has always went pee after waking up 🤷😂

@@kokolatte825 just keep going and trying different things! I think one of the things that helped my son was keeping him bottomless all day also keeping his toilet near him too! And then also just telling him whenever I had to use the toilet 😂 I feel like they are more comfortable telling you when they need to go if you tell them when you do! 🤷 Don't give up it will happen eventually! @@jariahguernsey I started elimination communication with my son before we even left the hospital. I'm "lazy" about it, but he sits on the toilet first thing every morning (14 months old now). Most days since he was 6 months old he wakes up dry, and I don't think he's pooped in his sleep since about 2 months old. I expect we'll be able to start giving him the responsibility to initiate in the next couple months. I'm finding it MUCH less stressful than traditional potty training.

Thanks for the advice 😇 He hates being wet so he pulls off his pull up to either pee on the floor or in one of his trucks then pours it out on the floor. His pediatrician suggested it was a texture issue to the wetness that's he's scared of a urine splash. At one time i wouldve agreed, however he recently decided he's no longer scared of water and enjoys playing in the rain and taking long baths. Previously he screamed and had a total melt down if anything wet touched him. He pees in the bath aswell. Just ABSOLUTLY REFUSES to use the big potty or any of the little ones ive bought them. He will use the smaller potties as chairs with pull ups on but not bare bottom. They go to the restroom everytime i go. Noah loves to flush the toilet and wash his hands after I potty as ive taught him we POTTY/WIPE/FLUSH/WASH. So any advice you may have to get through these barriers would be huge. His next apt. Is Sept 5th I'm hoping to get some answers then aswell. At least knowing a specific reason for his hate of the toilet bare bottom gives me someplace to work from. He's incredibly intelligent knows how to read/multiplication/advanced colors & shapes. So after receiving your advice I will go to Wal-Mart get a timer & poster board & allow him to help me put it together. Hopefully this will allow us to move forward on this potty training journey 😉 Again very helpful thank you so much. NAMASTE 🦋

Just from a safety point of view, you need to be careful when recommending piddle pads and towels to be used in carseats. These are aftermarket products and are not crash tested in carseats. So they can alter the harness fit and effect the way the harness performs in an accident. In many countries aftermarket products are illegal to use and will go against most carseat manuals. Alway use products that are made specifically for your carseat as they will have been crash tested.
The cloth nappy cover is an awesome idea though, I'm definitely going to try that.

My child with be four soon and still hasn't been potty trained. I have tried for a long time, though for a couple years we were going through things and I wasn't allowed to potty train him when it was probably the best time to, I won't get into that though. But he has shown all the signs at some point. But he's at a point now where he doesn't want to go in the potty. He will sit on the toilet after I tell him he went in his diaper and needs to sit on the potty. He will tell me no he wants to go in his diaper when I tell him he has to go in the potty, I have bought him special underwear that he refuses to wear instead and I have also tried no diapers or underwear and he will put pants on to replace them or just go on the floor. I'm at a loss now. I have gotten a few tips from the pediatrician, friends and family but none of it works for him. It's like he knows what I'm trying to do, and finds ways around it because he does not want to go in the potty. He definitely understands the concept though. I've done a lot of research too and there's nothing different to try.

He’s really good at saying he has to go #1 and has barely any accidents, but for some reason, he won’t tell when he has to go number 2. At daycare, they were throwing away a lot of his underwear because he was having lots of accidents and that was a lot of money so we had to start using pull ups. It’s very frustrating. At home, we ditch the pull up all together. But he also has my full one on one attention so I’m able to see the signs when he has to go #2. Again, he won’t tell me... sigh. :( he’s already 2 years old. Heeeelp.

Any tips on teaching your child to sign or say "potty" when they have to go?

This is great, thank you! Can you give some advice on what to say to get your kid to help you clean up the accident, so that it does not come across as punitive?

Thank you for sharing the Montessori way to potty train! Just wanted to agree and emphasize that an m&m is never a good praise for a toddler because any round and hard food is a real choking hazard

Hi! I keep rewatching this video because we are starting potty training this weekend and I'm a bit nervous. I've been following you guys almost since the beginning and I remember there was a video where Kylie knew she had a miss and came running to tell you, but looking for it I realized maybe that one is one of the videos you made private, maybe? So I was thinking if you had any plans to make a Real Talk video about potty training with anecdotes with both Kylie and Mia now that both are trained, do you think it might be worth it considering you already had this one?. It would be really helpful to watch even if I already started the process. Thank you for all your content it is very informative and realistic!

I've found that pull ups are for PARENTS! kids will just pee in them but they are good if the child does say they need to go potty and you are out it's much easier to pull them down for a rush to the potty vs getting a diaper unlatched. so it's easier for parents while out. so i use those when we go out and undies at home

Pull-ups are just expensive diapers. I know one family that only used them for nighttime after their girls were fully potty-trained.
And a diaper can be pulled down in a pinch if needed.

Just wanted to say thanks for posting videos about this. This is very helpful for raising my baby girl and I look forward to using the montessori environment and teachings for her as well. You do a great job explaining! :D

I’m curious; since first watching this video, I did my Montessori teachers assistant training with AMI for 0-3, and I’ve just found myself back here.
What I was taught in regards to toilet learning was pretty different to this! Have you learned more on your Montessori journey that would be additional to this video?
I was taught that it was more in line with EC, ie using cloth nappies to feel the wet/dry concept and offering the potty with each change or after naps etc, as early as birth, rather than waiting for the child to be ‘ready’
(Of course, different teachers would have different interpretations so it may have just been my teacher)
