Sharing notes from Dr Berg: Antacids only work for a short time, requiring you to take more and more to keep your symptoms at bay. Through prolonged use, antacids will only make heartburn worse by depleting your stomach acid. Antacids are associated with the following side effects: • Bloating • Indigestion • Allergies • Increased infection in the stomach • Depression Antacids create a condition known as achlorhydria, which depletes your stomach acid, but you need your stomach acid to get rid of heartburn. Your stomach is very acidic and should have a pH between 1 and 3. Enzymes cannot be activated if you do not have the right pH. Heartburn is not a problem resulting from too much acid-it's a valve problem. Keeping the pH of the stomach between 1 and 3 keeps the valve shut. How to get rid of heartburn naturally: 1. The most important nutrient to eliminate and prevent heartburn is vitamin B1 (thiamine). Your stomach can not produce acid when you’re deficient in vitamin B1. A diet high in carbs depletes B1. Low B1 deprives the autonomic nervous system, which controls the valves of the stomach. Look for a natural source of vitamin B1 to get rid of heartburn. 2. Potassium and zinc are very important for your stomach acid. Try a good electrolyte powder and trace mineral supplement to increase your intake of these important minerals. Also, make sure you’re getting plenty of sea salt. 3. Increase your stomach acid. This triggers the valve at the top of the stomach to close. Apple cider vinegar and betaine hydrochloride can help acidify the stomach It’s important to note that if apple cider vinegar or betaine hydrochloride causes burning, you may have gastritis or an ulcer. In this situation, you need to heal the stomach before taking apple cider vinegar or betaine hydrochloride. Thank you Dr Berg! 🐱👍
Its not quite bandaid on a stab wound territory, but definitely myopic. Stomach valving not functiong is kind of a mechanical problem. Treating the chemistry instead? Thats a bit of a disconnect.
not a disco At All..... he sez that the valve is Triggered to be clOsed by the proper "Acidity", thus the chemistry approach, such as apple cider vinager. you should pay full attention b4 you criticize his good advise, with your own faulty approach
I had been diagnosed GERD in 2004 and the Dr prescribed antacids. From that point, I really can't get rid of them until three months ago. It has been over 20 years I used antacids. Three months ago, I was suffering from Fissure and hemorrhoids. When I was searching videos related to this, accidentally I saw a video of Dr. Berg and started taking ACV 2 tsp in the morning after food. Oh, my God, I can't believe that I am able to live without antacids. I am completely living GERD free, antacid free life for the past three months. Thanks is not enough for Dr.Berg. A great salute to him.
Heartburn in college changed my life too. I ate bottles of antacids and was prescribed nexium, and the doctor wanted me on anxiety pills too. After 2 more years of suffering I decided to try acupuncture. We chatted about food and unlike my "regular" doctors, the acupuncturist supported me trying a food elimination diet. 20 years later... I live on a farm and grow all my own veg, fruit, meat and herbal remedies. Heartburn set my life on a completely different course.

I've been dealing with all sort of issues the past 5 years. Just watched this started taking apple cider + B1 5 days ago and symptoms are much better since then. Thank you.
@@Xoxo-kj4vy It doesn't matter, but diet and quantity of food is by far the biggest trigger. There's nothing wrong with a PPI, they're pretty cheap these days. Weight loss meds can have a great impact, simply because you're eating far less.
I had a Friend who was a Weight Lifter and he told me "Pain Is Just Weakness Leaving Your Body". I told him "No, Pain Is Your Body Telling You There's Something Wrong, So Stop Doing That, Stupid!", LOL!
It really depends on the context so both of you were kind of right. If your quads hurt because you're doing intense exercise at that particular moment and you know that the pain comes from the accumulation of lactic acid in the muscle cells, then pushing through that pain absolutely can be considered as a weakness leaving your body because you're doing something that's uncomfortable but good for you 😊@@rodneyferguson446
I believe weight is part of the equation. For me, when I was approaching 250lbs it really pronounced itself. If I went down in weight the problem went away. Maybe I'm wrong but I believe the additional weight was pulling my stomach forward and allowing my stomach acids to travel up.
Na some can have more and if you study crap in foods n drinks sugars that's major cause , mind belly stress doesn't help too etc old news can cause ulcers but your find its meds and foods I been through it all andcorrected drs give losec omeprazole load crap wish I'd seen dr berg 30 years ago but have 2 years studied it all done all I ate healthy anyway but now corrected drs still ignorant and most never heard tudca etc so said
Wow, that's a really life changing video. My dad suffers from heartburn since forever. He never takes anti-acids, he eats some fruits or in worst case drinks Salvus water. I also had heartburn when I messed up my back with bad posture and also went through a lot of stress. Then I started eating cleaner, moving more, visited a chirropractor and stressed less. It basically disappeared, it only comes back once in a while.
Yes i agree. My gerd was killing me. My Yale trained ent could not fix me and I became desperate and open minded. I found you and you changed my life. Thank you.
I have that since very little child because parents were not feeding me every 2 hours but every 4 hours and then we are. But will listen to your video now because today this acid is to much.
Hello Dr.Berg, thank you for all of the good service you do spreading effective knowledge to the public. I suffered from GERD for a year now. I took your word and bought Betaine HCI and use ACV. Problem solved over night. So my question is, since the lack of acid is the problem, does that mean go against advice to stay away from acidic foods like raw onions, garlic, tomatoes, spicy food, and caffeine etc.? Please let me know thank you Dr.Berg
the acid in your stomach is Hydrochloride acid it’s not the same as citric acid that is found in food. So if you suffer from GERD or very bad heart burn I would still stay away from very high acidic foods.
I have very bad gerd. Thank you so much for the detailed video. Your channel has been a game changer for me as with no health insurance, I follow you to help myself stay healthy with natural remedies. God bless you!
I quit ppi medicines 3 years ago, I started using zinc l carnosine, slippery elm, licorice, ginger root, Aloe vera, pomegranate extract, marshmallow root, and am great no acid reflux anymore for 3 years now.
It was almost 2 yrs ago that I showed heart burn and GERD symptoms and thank God I watched Dr. Berg's videos on Acid Reflux. I've been taking ACV and Betain right before my meals and also taking Vitamin B1 (Dr. Berg's) and prebiotic generally since then and feel much better than even prior to my GERD issues. Works really well. I'm lucky that I never tried Antacids. Thank you Dr. Berg ❤
Heartburn and gastric issues is what set me on a different direction also! I had endoscopic scans and was told I had the start of Barrett's esophagus, a hardening of the esophagus lining caused by the acid reflux and that if its not treated could lead to cancer. I was prescribed an acid reducing medication. I asked, "just till I heal?", but the doctor said, no for life. Being scared of getting cancer I took it for a while, but had side affects like nausea, which I couldn't handle, so stopped taking it. I looked for alternatives and found a youtube video from a doctor (I can't remember who), who said the problem is not enough acid and his remedy was more salt and more calcium. I did that and for me it worked. But this was just the beginning of my journey.
OK YOU TOLD THAT MUCH. NOW TELL US MILLIONS WHAT SALT and HOW MUCH THIS and WHEN A DAY. PEOPLE SURE TICKLE ME WHEN THEY START TALKING PLENTY and NOT SAYING NOTHING. TELL ALL or TELL NOTHING YOULL. @@eddieabbott370 Heart burn must be really getting to you! Disclaimer: I'm not a doctor, so don't listen to me. Research yourself. Salt: sodium chloride. How much: several shakes onto my dinner. Plus 1 standard tablet containing calcium a day. I can't remember which doctor, but it was on youtube and he said, as far as salt is concerned, do the opposite from what the medical industry has been saying for years, ie reduce salt - it will harden your arteries and give you a heart attack! The acid in your stomach is hydrochloric acid and 1 half of salt is the chloride side. As for calcium, I'm going from memory here, has something to do with the whole process of acid being excreted into the stomach.
@Tundreq Oh, I've done Apple cider vinegar before. It's just not ideal. Once I stopped, my heartburn was right back. But this valve issue he was talking about has given me a little insight that I can bring to my primary doctor. Also, I would like to ask my doctor about thiamine.

You are exactly right Dr. berg! I used to have terrible acid reflux and nothing seemed to work until I took B1 for something else and then miraculously my acid reflux went away and never come back. Thank you for all you do!
@Aaronymous I was desperate too. I had developed Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome. Just horrible symptoms. Felt I wasn’t long for this world. Anyhow, I wasn’t sure which form of vitamin B1 was best, so I tried several but staying away from the cheaper synthetic versions. I took Benfotiamine, lipothiamine, allithiamine and something called TTFD(which the body can absorb ASAP). B1 should be taken with magnesium. I also supplemented with a methylated B complex and made dietary changes( cut out bread, sodas, etc). I took the B1 sometimes before meals, during meals and as time went on I increased the dosage until the symptoms all resolved themselves. This is what worked for me. I am not a doctor. I hope this helps.
I got really sick around Christmas last year, the worst acid reflux I’ve ever had, that catapulted me into changing my diet and lifestyle. Feeling and looking much better. Grateful for your videos ❤ really enjoying your electrolytes too
SAME HERE. I went to the ER like 5 times they throw medicine at me, I changed my whole diet and lifestyle. Read gods word , enduring the struggles and it’s looking better then before. Keep up the good work 👌🏾👌🏾
I watched an older vid of his recommending hcl and acv. I took both and got a stomachache. It felt like something burning. I decided I probably had too much stomach acid and stopped taking hcl and acv. 2 years later and I still have reflux which is really affecting me. I took a supp for gastritis since a doctor found out I had gastritis and an ulcer. Which was what probably caused the stomach pain earlier. I could even feel the ulcer at times. My stomach is feeling better now and I just started taking hcl. 2x 650 mg to start with with food. So far no problems.
I recently discovered alginate, which is derived from seaweed, to prevent acid reflux. Alginate has long been used in Europe but not many options in the US. Alginate reacts with stomach acid to form a temporary physical barrier against acid reflux at the GE junction. I like this new product called Nutritist Refluxter, which is all natural and preservative free. I take it at night to prevent reflux while I sleep.
Thank you so much for all of your guidance on health Dr. Berg, especially heartburn. Last year, doctors destroyed me with the combination of H2 blockers and pantoprazole. I began to have strange symptoms such as SOB, dizziness, weakness, rapid hearbeat, insomnia. I couldn't eat vary my diet while I was taking these bc my gut would hurt and I mentioned this to my physicians, they told me they were not concerned with any of this causing my symptoms. They told me to keep taking the medications and that I was just anxious. I decided to go see a hematologist. My body wasn't holding iron and my B12 was very low. No other explanations except the medications. I started taking betaine hcl with my meals, increasing my red meat intake and seeing a holistic dr who encouraged colostrum. My heartburn is gone and I'm much better. Thank you again!
@Xoxo-kj4vy I used whatever was given to me in the holistic Dr's office, I also used Solaray betaine with pepsin. I can't be sure if there are better brands out there but it worked for me.
Dr Berg’s advice is very credible! he has helped me several times! I can’t thank him enough for all of the wisdom from him. The fact that he educates and shares all of this to the public is wonderful and certainly not a fault of it being a TH-cam video.!
Thanks for this video. One thing that is confusing is that some studies seem to suggest that zinc can -- ... They reported that zinc oral supplements (with or without PPIs) inhibited acid secretion and increased gastric PH in both human and rodent gastric - so perhaps you could comment on that.
I suffered all the time with extreme heartburn. It used to wake me up, choking & burning my throat. Was very scary when I struggled to breathe. So I changed some simple things. I have ET and Arthritis so my mobility is limited, but I use my spin bike 35mins a day. I don't eat after 8pm. No chocolate/ snacks in the evening. No fast food at all. No spicy meals. Apple cider vinegar and hour before I go to bed. 1 year on and no heartburn at all. A good night's sleep is underrated 😊.
I was just diagnosed with Crohn’s disease. I have taken Omeprazole for 34 years. I am trying to get off of it, but I have such acid reflux. I have previously had precancerous cells in my esophagus so I need an alternative. Any suggestions?

I have battled acid reflux for decades. Also I have a hiatal hernia. But Vitamin C helped me. It may not work for everyone. Vitamin C acts on histamines, and I have really bad respiratory allergies. One day my whole gut felt like it was on fire, and nothing to lose, I took a 500 mg Vitamin C. Magic. My stomach calmed. The next day I took 1 in the morning and 1 in the afternoon, and it was bliss. Slept well too. My allergies seem calmer too when I take Vitamin C. Apparently my GERD was caused by histamine activity.

Surgery is not a guarantee...I know so many people in trouble. This is the problem with missinformation, not everyone id the same. For some people all these things work, for others, surgery works. I know lots of people who did surgery and they wished they never did it. Everyone is different, research your issue and find your solution well.
Missinformation here, i had a hiatal hernia and my gastro told me that everything can be corrected with diet exercising your diagphram and eating well. Also gluten/ bread was one of the biggest trigger food I discovered I had. After 2 months, no more acid reflux, I am free from it, my stomach is healed and I can sleep like a baby. Everything can be healed with change of lifestyle, it can be diet, healing an ulcer, cutting of intelorance food like dairy or gluten, having tests for celiac disease. Consider this before getting a surgery because some doctor will just want you to get the surgery to hide the problem but after, they wont tell you why you have GERD which is not normal in the first place. For severe hernia where your stomach is literally popping out of your tummy, surgery is necessary. But the rest of the time, no. Your body can heal from a lot of things with a good lifestyle and the correct tests ( aka gluten, dairy, food allergies, even sugar can cause the sphincter to stay open )

Dr Berg, following your advice and knowledge I have been on keto for a number of years with great success, but feeling over confident, like you I tried a carnivore diet for 3 weeks, perhaps I did not give it long enough but I could not go on any longer due to the really bad acid reflux, I had no reflux on keto, back on us to now and feeling great.

@alexlabra1562 tips for getting off PPI? Stubbornness. Lots of prayer. Sitting propped up with pillows at night until my back hurt worse than my belly. Avoiding triggers as much as possible. Also, otc pepcid. I started having heartburn when I was pregnant, and so skinny people would ask if I was anorexic. I was eating everything I could stuff in my mouth. Everyone assured me heartburn with pregnancy was normal. I was also working with my husband a lot and lifting way too much at times and would occasionally need to be checked for hernias in the groin area. First PPI was omeprazole. It helped for a while. Then dr increased the dose. Then switched to pantoprazole cause it was stronger. Then increased the dose of that. With age and weight gain that I blame on the drugs, I just kept getting worse. Started the surgery testing and haven't taken any PPI since. Triggers for me seem to be stress, lifting, and tomatoes. Eating small meals and refusing to play human forklift seem to help. I hope this helps some and wasn't too long winded!

Sharing notes from Dr Berg:
Antacids only work for a short time, requiring you to take more and more to keep your symptoms at bay. Through prolonged use, antacids will only make heartburn worse by depleting your stomach acid.
Antacids are associated with the following side effects:
• Bloating
• Indigestion
• Allergies
• Increased infection in the stomach
• Depression
Antacids create a condition known as achlorhydria, which depletes your stomach acid, but you need your stomach acid to get rid of heartburn.
How to get rid of heartburn naturally:
Apple cider vinegar and betaine hydrochloride can help acidify the stomach
It’s important to note that if apple cider vinegar or betaine hydrochloride causes burning, you may have gastritis or an ulcer.
Missing the most important cause of the problem . H pylori!
Thank you, Fidel! 😸
If I drink a ittle acv over few days my bladder lining hurts! How heal lining? I heard chicken skin/bone broth soup for a month?

What helped me was going on a diet with 90% less sugar and less carbs.I have lost 10 kilos but still have 20 more to lose.
I believe weight is part of the equation. For me, when I was approaching 250lbs it really pronounced itself. If I went down in weight the problem went away. Maybe I'm wrong but I believe the additional weight was pulling my stomach forward and allowing my stomach acids to travel up.
Same experience for me.

Hi, just wondering how much of dr bergs stuff did you take (like per meal and etc) & how long did it take for you to get over your symptoms?

I was taking it every day and after about 2 to 3 weeks I noticed improvement. improvement continued and was significant.

2 years later and I still have reflux which is really affecting me. I took a supp for gastritis since a doctor found out I had gastritis and an ulcer. Which was what probably caused the stomach pain earlier. I could even feel the ulcer at times.

I recently discovered alginate, which is derived from seaweed, to prevent acid reflux. Alginate has long been used in Europe but not many options in the US.

For now
I have started the B1 as my Dr recommended, and I will try the apple cider vinegar, Thanks...
How is it working?
@denisegovi910 Good afternoon, Dr... I haven't started the apple cider vinegar yet, I'm taking a pill when I have to eat spicy foods..Sometimes you know we are stubborn to ourselves, but I use baking soda, which really helps me...Thanks for asking...
Betaine HCL and zinc Carnosine really helped me with GERD and globus sensation
Betaine hcl with pepcin ok bro
Where do you buy all this supplement at the pharmacy or
This guy so much more helpful than my own medicine prescribing doctor. Apple Cider Vinegar works way better for me than Betaine HCL
Me too
How did you use it? When and how much? I
Dr. Berg I just watched this video. I had an endoscopy last week and have been diagnosed with a hiatal hernia. Question would these 3 things you recommended help with that?
I have a Sliding Hiatal Hernia. Would this work for me?
What is gastritis and how can u fix it naturally
Crazy timing. Had bad heartburn last night.
Lay off the pizza and wings Steven.

😊grateful for this technicality information doc.
Glad you found it helpful!
One table spoon of apple vinegar in a glass of water yesterday 30 minutes before dinner and no estomac pain for all the day . Tanks you so much Dr Berg you are my doctor !
That's great.
@@Drbergwhat is the exact time to drink ACV????before breakfast or after?hope you reply
I am 11 days into carnivore and will start normal keto after 1 month. 10 years of heartburn stopped within 3 days. No more asthma either.
Seriously!!! That s awesome!! Im getting prepared to do keto and fasting. Clearing out my fridge and mind.
I too have asthma, I wonder why it helps that??
@@denisemartin3603 For me I am pretty sure the asthma was mainly being caused by GERD, which was caused by excess gas from an overgrowth of bacteria, which itself was probably caused by malabsorption of carbs. I have not confirmed this with any tests but it explains many things in my life.
Dr. Berg, I’ve learned so much from your videos. How much B1 should I take? Also, I have trouble swallowing pills. I cannot find a company that sells caplets or small capsules of beating hcl.
Imagine a Holistic Health Practitioner who recommends calcium carbonate for someone suffering from gastroparesis 😐 WOW! 😮 Thank you, Dr. Berg! Have a healthy Sunday, y'all! 🙂
Thanks for your comment. Healthy Sunday!
Currently eating tums like candy. I've been off pantoprasole for maybe 3 months. Partly voluntarily. Partly because of a proposal of surgery to maybe fix the problem. Surgeon demanded I stop the damn pill for 2 weeks before his first test. I'm eating way less tums now than that first 2 weeks! Possibly less than while taking prescription strength drugs. Some additional tests (torture games the Dr's people blamed on insurance requirements), and they tell me my heartburn is severe (I tried to tell them that) and I also have a large hiatal hernia. They could help, but the surgery is probably not happening due to cost and high copays.
Do you have any videos on hiatal hernia fixes? I've managed to survive long enough that I'm not sure I would go thru surgery even if affordable. Any recommendations for that hiatal hernia that was "insignificant" 4 years ago would be appreciated!
Thank you.
@butchmetzger7023 hi I'm going through small hiatal hernia and was prescribed pp1 for the hernia but I wanted to ask what tips u take or took over the years to not take ppi and also what to eat. I was told by my gi specialist i don't need surgery because my hernia is to small. Bit it hurts sometimes and he also said to lose weight. Any tips can help me I'm struggling to fix my stomach problem.
Same for me I have so many digestive issues but I think mine is from me not having my gallbladder anymore. It is horrible acid reflux. Hope you get some relief soon.@@alexlabra1562
I was also working with my husband a lot and lifting way too much at times and would
occasionally need to be checked for hernias in the groin area.
Can you make a video on Barrett's Esophagus? I'm not sure if the remedies would be the same. I've been taking pantoprozole but would like not to. As soon as I stop taking it I'm in so much pain.
Worth an ask, thanks!
This is soo helpful. Thank you!!❤
What if you eat so clean and healthy and have done all you have said and still getting a sore throat due to reflux after every meal and even on an empty stomach
Love you Dr Berg
Thanks for your love and support. Appreciate it!
Hello , so Doc I have incredible headache, pain in the stomach I fell like little needle stab like in my left side of my stomach.
And yesterday I started felling dizzy at work and completely perplexed, and then I burped and had this felling of throwing up. Whit horrible headache.
So here is to much acidity problems ?😢
Thank you for sharing your personal experiences..
Sure!
I have success with Betaine HCL but between meals I will start to get a little reflux and over days, the little damage and reflux will build to the point that I have to go back on the PPI'S for rest and repair. What do you recommend to maintain the LES response a couple of hours after eating? This is the point of failure for me after a few years of attempting to get off reflux medication.
Your videos have been a massive help, Thank you!
oh I love my Docta!!! He is soooo fine!! Thank you for taking care of your people. We love you.
Hello, and thank you for this video. I have two questions:
1. When to take the Apple Cider Vinegar and B1 vitamins?
2. What are the dosages of Apple Cider Vinegar and B1?
Thank you in advance for your answer.
Thank you so much for excellent advice dr Berg ❤
You're welcome! Glad you found it helpful!
Honestly, thank you. This video is such a gift because it delves into the surrounding organs and how they impact the incidence of heartburn. Thank you very much.
You're absolutely welcome!

Hello Dr. Berg Would all this apply if the person had their gal bladder removed ?
Thank you. Greatly appreciate your message, Doctor Dgn.
Hello Dr. Berg. I'm one of your big fans and always watch your videos. Thanks a lot for giving healthy advice to us in every videos. One quick question for you: Every time when I boil the beef bones (12 hours) there are lots of grease accumulates on it. Can we use that grease? Is that grease harmful or healthy to use? Please advise. Thanks 🥰❤️

Hi Dr Berg. I am currently taking Betain HCL to treat my gerd and was wondering if it is okay to also take Vitamin B1 while on Betain HCL, or wait till I get off Betain HCL before talking Vitamin B1?
Thank you and good morning!
Hi there, @mekman4 👋
i ate meat fruit, raw honey,1 month and acid reflux gerd compltely went away ( mince beef, normal beef was hard to digest and worsened symptoms) but overuse of ppi i think caused other issues my migrating motor complex doesnt work, sibo and low stomach acid i think ( what ever supplement etc u try do it slowly never rush anything)
