  • Installing the cylinder head on the M119. I may or may not have gotten the torque sequence slightly backwards. The pattern is still the same though so it will be ok. Learn from my mistakes, check your gaskets BEFORE installation.

    Awesome video man. I had an s class with m119 engine before. As a former Benz technician, I have to say this is neat.

    I'm late to the party here (sorry!) but to answer the question about the head gaskets... the incorrect #35/#36 gaskets are for open-deck blocks. Great video series on the M119, thanks for posting all these!🔧

    Hi Mr. FNT - Nice work on the head installation. You may have gotten the head gasket set for the 119.98x (ME-injected) variation of the motor, or the earliest 119.96x (CIS-E injected) version. I know that MB has been using Victor Reinz as the OEM for the 119.974/975 engines' head gaskets. I am not a fan of Reinz gaskets, and always try to buy Elring (whether MB Elring OEM or Elring aftermarket) when they are available. When I did my M117 heads 11 years ago, the factory MB gaskets were made by Elring. But unfortunately you take what MB gives you.....whomever makes them. I have yet to ever pull the heads off of an M119. It's a very rare occurrence to need to do so, which is why your video series is nice to see.
    Also, MB within the past couple of years STOPPED making the new coolant reservoir with the long tube that goes down from the water pump. I managed to find an NOS one last summer when I replaced mine, and pretty much at the last factory price of the part. But they are NLA from MB.
    For the record, the good thing is that the reservoir is NOT needed, and is a nice classic piece of MB over-engineering. The pump and engine will be just fine without the reservoir if anyone in the future is unable to find one, or re-use one (the vertical plastic tube can get quite brittle with engine heat, age, etc.).
    Also it is interesting that the newer generation engines (M104, M119, etc.) use angle torquing. The M117 used a straight torque rating, in stages, and no angle torquing to bolt the head to the block.
    It would have been good to contrast the amount of stretch in the old head bolts with the new factory bolts that you got, to show how the bolts do stretch.

      I have a new MB pump and a new reservoir. I have yet to figure out how to attach the two since the tube is very hard plastic. I just haven't gotten that far yet. So far both that I've removed haven't been as brittle as I was hoping, which would have made getting the bolt out from behind it a lot easier. I thought and hoped it would have just snapped off.
      I did measure the original bolts and they really had not stretched much. They were close to what the new spec is. Still, I figured since everything else was new then I wouldn't want to skimp on the head bolts.

      I used a heat gun to heat the top end of the reservoir tube where it presses onto the nipple on the water pump. Worked well to expand it slightly to help with the slip fit.
      Though this is not 100% required.

      I re-used the head bolts on my M117 but bought new ones for my M104. The 117s as you experienced weren’t stretched much. I’d say that as long as the engine isn’t overheated the bolts can usually be reused at least once, if not twice, comfortably. Of course making sure things are within the stretch spec.

    Hey FNT. How much springiness do you expect out of a lifter? Should it have a little bounce back by just pressing it with your fingers? Thanks.

    • @FriendlyMBTech
      @FriendlyMBTech  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, there should be some springiness. When I checked all of mine, 8 were solid so I took 8 out of the old engine that still had some spring. Should be stiff but still able to compress.

      I did not coat it with engine oil. I don't imagine it will make any kind of difference.

      I can. I will just have to have one of our parts guys throw together an estimate with every part I've purchased. I get an employee discount so what I've spent wouldn't be accurate for everyone else.

      @@FriendlyMBTech I have an arrangement with my local dealer (Mercedes-Benz of Annapolis, Maryland) parts department that they sell me parts at a ~28-30% discount off of list. I order via their web site (www.getmercedesparts.com) and then they call me when the parts arrive a couple of days later in most cases. They do charge me the 6% Maryland sales tax, but no shipping cost, of course. There are quite a number of MB dealerships around the country who run mail-order operations that provide significant discounts on parts prices in the 25-30% range below retail. I like my arrange with my local dealer so that I have a local "throat to choke" if I need to, vs. someone that is 10 states away whom I can only talk to on the phone or email.

    How often does MB send the wrong parts?
    Had something similar happen recently. The dealership where I bought a part refused to accept any responsibility for their error. I went to my cc company (AMEX) and they provided a refund.
    After buying parts from the dealership off and on for about 25 years, their arrogance and callousness was beyond the pale.
    I learned from another dealer that the un-named group that sent the wrong part evidently didn’t bother to match the part to the VIN i provided!

    • @FriendlyMBTech
      @FriendlyMBTech  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Incorrect parts from MB is not very common. My parts being incorrect I won't blame on MB or our parts department. The engine I am putting together isn't from a W124, it's from a W140. So naturally that would cause some confusion. We are having to cross reference my VIN with another VIN and hope the parts are the same. Plus there are I think three different head gaskets for each side for this year M119 so that also would get confusing. I'm sorry you had a bad experience with your local parts department. I know our parts department is not like that and go out of their way to make our guests happy.
