This was from the 4th album 'Deftones' (self-titled) in 2003... 'Hexagram' was another single from this record.
Deftones were very candid about how the band was near a breakup during making this album and the tour... Deftones were opening for Metallica in the summer of '03 and they cancelled shows because of the infighting and drug abuse. They made 1 of their best albums 'Saturday night wrist' in 2006... but the band was admittedly fried internally... Chino Moreno (vocals) went off to do an album as Team Sleep, just to get away from the band.
Deftones recorded an album 'Eros' in 2008, but then bassist Chi Cheng was involved in a car accident that put him in a coma for years (He died in 2013) ...Deftones decided to start over and recorded their next album ('Diamond eyes' in 2010) from scratch w/ bassist Sergio Vega.
Diamond eyes was such a great album!
Needles and Pins is one of my favorite from that album.
I don't think I have ever heard someone call SNW one of their best albums. I almost always see people call it one of their worst.

@@sumonjamal1653 Don't get me wrong, I think SNW is a good album, though I definitely rank it near the bottom (that said Gore is the only Deftones album I don't think is super solid). But yeah, I dunno, I have never seen anyone rate SNW as one of their best until just now.
As a huge fan of Deftones since the beginning, I love that 30 years later, they're still super relevant. And that you guys are part of bringing them to audiences that wouldn't have found them any other way. Keep it up! (Minerva = 2003)
its wild that Tik Tok has them surging with a whole new generation. Its fantastic. I might hate tik tok but if its keeping this band relevant then its at least doing something good.

Think this is the first song you've covered from Deftones self titled 4th album. It's super underrated. It's the album after White Pony (3rd) and Around The Fur (2nd)
I agree that this album is underrated. I hadn't yet discovered Deftones when White Pony released, so this was the album that I got to experience from the start.

Shoegaze Deftones is the best Deftones! This song is absolutely gorgeous, I liked the band before this album came out but when I first saw the video for Minerva something changed for me and I became a fan. My best friend in Uni gave me this album as a birthday gift in 2004 and the whole record blew my mind. When I got into shoegaze at the end of that same year I saw the connection and was amazed.
Deftones vocally tried to distance themselves from nu-metal between White Pony and the Self-titled (if memory serves me well) and I would agree as they added influences to their sound that nu-metal bands wouldn't have, as shown in their covers (Cocteau Twins, for instance, or Duran Duran). Different sonic palettes.

It was an absolutely beautiful video, the cinematography was fantastic especially how it ends with the sun rising and the feedback.. I loved this song it had such a vibe. You just closed your eyes and listened. This was just another example musically why the Deftones were just on another tier than their peers.

Y’all have to check out Damone of Around the fur or Hexagram from their self titled album. Both have some of chinos best screams ever.

I never really thought Deftones was a Nu Metal band, they had some elements of it on their first few albums, and came up at the time it was exploding on the scene, but I always felt they just got lumped into that group but they are clearly different then typical Nu Metal bands of the time. Always thought of Deftones as their own genre. Especially from White Pony on.
Another track I used love listening to and watching the video on MTV2 before going to school.
I remember the first time I heard this song it was actually live during the Metallica Summer sanitarum tour in 2003 in Orlando FL. Mudvayne opened, the Limp Bizkit, then Linkin Park and when Deftones came on, exactly as they started playing this song it started raining all over the us and they continued playing this very bad ass song as the rain was coming down. Oh man it was surreal. Ive always been a Deftones fan since Around the Fur.
This track has such a vibe. I remember being in Coors Stadium (Denver) at a metal festival. The field perched my back perfectly as I watched them perform (Stone Sour, too), and it was a beautiful afternoon/night listening to my favorite bands.
Edit: Korn was the headliner of that show. It was The Family Values Tour. I don't put Deftones in the Nu Metal classification.
There was a town not far from me named "Minerva" so when this song came out I was excited because of that even though it had nothing to do with Minerva Ohio.
And Speaking of Ohio, you should do "SP Lit" or "Dead Inside (coming alive performance)" by Chimaira from Cleveland. Criminally underrated

Deftones empezo haciendo hardcore en su albun adrenaline, around the fur es netamente hardcore, si bien es cierto empezo a introducir nuevos sonidos creando otro estilo en la epoca cuando empezó el nu metal se hizo mas conocido aun etiquetandolo como nu metal, pero la verdad es que ellos siempre hicieron hardcore.

Can you imagine smokey trying to guess the full name of gore 52? LOL! If you don't know what im talking about look it up. The way i see it was nu metal was around but wasnt popular, the korn showed up and it was wow what it this? Thats when it went poplar and slipknot glorified it. Personal opinion. I remember hearing this song for the first time in the movie 'House of Wax', one of my favorite slasher movies. Which also became my favorite Deftones song. Greetings, great video as always.
What a great song off of an incredibly brutal album. I’ve been listening to Deftones since ‘99 and I remember people hated on this when first released but I’ve always enjoyed almost every song off this brutal but melodic self-titled record while they were on the verge of breaking up from inner turmoil

Last year I went to a festival where they had this huge row of lights on the edge of the site, and at night it looked like this video, but with green hills instead of sand dunes. It was fkn beautiful, man. And I'm there babbling about it to my bemused hippy mates 😆
The journalist who coined the name nu-metal was doing an article about Korn and Deftones so yes Deftones is nu-metal. The word caught on when Korn started the Family Values Tour with all the other nu-metal bands, Deftones was part of the tour in 2001.
Deftones pioneered Nu Metal but then went on to transcend it. this is one of my favorite songs of theirs. just an untouchable vibe

This is off the self-titled "Deftones" album, one of my personal favorites. You want some insanity, then react to Hexagram off that album, it's the opener and BOY will it take you for a ride.

Its funny ya'll mentioned Deftones and Korn together. In the early 2000's Chino was on the cover of Revolver magazine with an interview where he said nu metal and Korn in particular wouldn't be around if it weren't for Deftones.

I only wore rock and roll shirts to high school in the 90s. I was a very rebellious teen in the 90s. I had an nirvana shirt that I would wear to school. That said on the back sex drugs and rock and roll.😊 And of course, I got trouble for it. But I didn't give two FFs about it.
Another great song from this album is When Girls Telephone Boys. Also Bloody Cape, definitely would recommend those 2.

I would also put Around the Fur on my "all killer, no filler" album list, as well as White Pony. I didn't mention it in my comment posted on the "Top 3 albums" video because like you, I was trying to keep my list on the short side and it just didn't happen to spring to mind as I was making my Honorable Mentions. If I were allowed to expand it to a top 40, 50, 100, I could go on and on about Radiohead's 'The Bends', 'Slaughter of the Soul' by At the Gates, She Wants Revenge's self-titled, 'Full Collapse' by Thursday, Bathory's 'Blood Fire Death', '13 Songs' by Fugazi, Mutemath's self-titled, 'Start Today' by Gorilla Biscuits, Kaddisfly's 'Set Sail the Prairie'...but I digress.
I can see the argument of how this isn't numetal. If this was the only Deftones song I'd ever heard, I would think they were another post-rock band like Mogwai, Explosions in the Sky, or Godspeed! You Black Emperor.

That's your fault for thinking Nu-metal is automatically a bad thing. They were a part of a rise of a new style of metal music that was about being very heavy, adding hip-hop/rap touches and being emotionally vulnerable. It was the "New Metal" aka Nu-metal.

MInerva is where Defotones start to expand out of Nu-Metal. Adrenaline and Korn's first were very similar
Already started with Fist from Adrenaline...
Be Quiet and Drive was also a big sign of what they had in store for the future.
White Pony was basically anything but NuMetal (apart from Back to school).
Long time fan of Deftones, I'd consider them nu-metal for their first 2 albums. With White Pony they intentionally went away from that style. They didn't want to just be lumped in with what they seen was just a passing fad, the cool thing to do so to speak.
