      Deftones messed me up as a theory student because some of the stuff they do structurally, and Chino in particular does melodically, is so rule-breaking and uncomfortable. But after listening to a few songs and seeing another analysis here on YT on their musical patterns, I started to realize that discomfort is kinda the point sometimes.

      Numetal is still kind of around and you can hear it's influence in a lot of contemporary metal. Rather than the style it's more about the band's themselves isn't it? I'd say the idea of transcending is subjective too. Don't get me wrong I completely agree in regards to deftones... But you're making a subjective statement as though it's objective.
      Numetal always got a lot of hate, and I just see it as kind of a punk vibe in that it was a lot of people who were making music who were less theory verse. But there was a lot of experimentation going on, and lots of different influences. Sometimes I felt it worked and other times it didn't.

    Deftones have a heavy sound with their grinding,distorted riffs but they often contrast this with atmospheric sounds like Chino's soaring vocals and reverb guitar effects and keyboards and even Chi's bass playing and Abes drumming. They have an obvious soft-loud dynamic present. The band were definitely influenced by The Cure and The Pixies. However,they have a very unique sound exclusive only to them. They're almost like a heavy metal version of The Pixies or Smashing Pumpkins but these descriptions don't do them any justice. They are so much better than most nu metal bands. Deftones,Tool,System Of A Down,Primus,Incubus,Queens Of The Stone Age and Muse are all amazing bands of the same realm.

      @Patrick-857 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I used to think he was singing out of tune, but I liked it anyway. Then I evolved and realised he's a freaking genius, and a great singer. It's tough as a singer to hold notes that are so different from the underlying music. He's digging into notes that work against the chord structure, and when you do that, it feels like you are out of tune, and your voice fights with you to move to a note that's closer to the chords. And the best part is he makes it sound easy, almost lazy, like he's so whacked out that he doesn't care about being in tune, like it's an accident that he's singing a half step off one of the core notes in the harmony. Deftones rule. One of the main groups that got me into shoegaze, ambiant/post rock, black metal, blackgaze and doom/drone metal. I just love dense, washy and ethereal mixes, with tons of dissonance.

      In my experience it depends on both the band and the style of music. For rock bands I’d say it is 50/50. The Deftones have had Frank doing keys for much long than he’s been an official member. I’d say the band let Frank do these parts without too much input from Terry Date (producer), but that’s just a guess. Terry seems to be the type of producer who facilitates good performances rather than writing the parts or bringing in additional instrumentation.

    Minerva is one of those songs that's like, blown-out stadium rock but with so much going on under the hood, as this video explains beautifully. One heck of a chorus, too.

    The Deftones...what an idyllic name for a band that wandered into a sound that only few understand, a sound that I tried to convey to my friends, a sound that no one in my camp can understand, yet I hear Melody and Harmony in the strangest way. I am glad that I am not alone in my way of thinking and my misunderstanding of musical norms or abnorms. Around the Fur taught me a great lesson... You think you have heard it all, NOPE! Thanks Rick, your insight is well appreciated!!!!!!! Love your channel sir!

    At 10:40, Rick points out the simultanuous use of the minor 3rd and major third... those dissonances are hypnotic and the reason I listen to the Deftones. Those insights are why I watch Rick Beato's you tube channel. Thanks Rick!

    That da-DAH-UH, snare followed by a quick kick is also a HUGE foundational element of Matt Cameron of Soundgarden's drum style. He's really the first drummer that I ever noticed using it to such a degree that it almost defines his sound... but there's so much more that is distinctly Matt Cameron that it wouldn't do him justice to say that.

    Pleasant surprise to see this instead of something from White Pony, a lot of people didn't like this album because it wasn't White Pony V2 but it's one of my favorites. Hexagram, Bloody Cape, Anniversary of an Uninteresting Event, and Moana all amazing tracks in addition to this one.
    This is one of the records from 2003 and 2004 that helped me get through a really miserable time, so it'll always have a special place in my heart for that as well.

    Frank is the secret weapon of Deftones. He’s lower in the mix on most of the tracks, but, I think his purpose is almost to draw you in on a subconscious level. I don’t know if it’s by design, but his contributions definitely make you feel the song. Also, Abe is an absolute monster drummer.
