Yes, she followed suit, not the other way around, but I'm sure Elizabeth is aware of that, she is just mentioning that she recognized the similarities. I remember someone talking about another of my favorite artists at the time though they were trying to convince me that Marilyn Manson was the first person to do that seemingly random jump in pitch in his singing. That nobody else had ever thought to do that. I appreciated that it was unusual to hear it, but it had been done before. If you listen to Adam Ant's early stuff, he did that exact thing over a decade before and I'm sure that Manson, MTV fan that he was, was influenced by it. If you listen to certain Etta James songs, you can hear where Janis Joplin picked up a lot of the vocal stylings that she used in creating her sound. Janis even talked about how she loved Etta.
Yep. Also, the whisper, breathy vocals, "creak" and lazy delivery is all tuned to seduction. That was the purpose. @@emaic Chi Ling Dai Cheng (July 15, 1970 - April 13, 2013) was an American musician, best known as the bassist and backing vocalist for the alternative metal band Deftones.
I met Chi a few days after my 17th birthday. A friend of mine surprised me with tickets to Deftones and Incubus. Due to an issue at will-call, we got upgraded to VIP passes, which included a meet and greet with the band. The whole band was really cool, but Chi took a little extra time to sit and chat with my friend and I for probably 20 mins or so. Such a cool dude. He will forever be missed.
25+ years later and this song still slaps. One of my favorites. Another one of my favorites from their earlier work is "7 Words" from their Adrenaline record.
I became a Deftones fan when I worked on the music video for Back to School after just moving to Los Angeles. When we were shooting the scene in the auditorium with the band playing but with a playback of the track, we had to stop for a union 15 minutes and the crew left their posts to have snacks and relax. But the band's instruments were plugged in. They just started going at it. All the extras went nuts, the room erupted in energy and the director started running around and yelling for everyone to get back on camera and capture it. It was an awesome rock moment.
Deftones is my favorite band, and it's always cool to hear someone break down the intricacies of their sound. It's stuff I could understand listening to it, but couldn't articulate it because of my lack of music theory knowledge.
Passenger gives me that same feeling. I experimented with Ecstasy when that song first came out a long time ago. And was driving down the rd with the windows down. We lived in the woods where there was almost no houses or street lights. It was an experience i could never fully describe ❤
Deftones is a mood. They're pretty much like a musical color chart which spans from light to dark with highs and lows from fast to slow. Also, Abe Cunningham is the most underrated drummer of the last 30 years.
He came up with some of the most memorable and instantly recognizable drum intros and grooves I've ever known. This one is a good example, with those two hits in the intro you instantly know which song it is
Chino’s influences are total 80s pop. Duran Duran, Culture Club, Depeche Mode, Prince, The Smiths, & Sade. That’s why his vocal palette is so fresh in metal… he combines that sexy pop element in a way no one else does. Guy is incredible.
He actually tore half of his vocals all on one side of his throat in 2001 and yet he still managed to absolutely battle cry on Hexagram in 2003 I recommend you listen to it !
Was coming here to reference this @TheCharismaticVoice I would love you analyse one of his recent live performances. A lot of people consider that his voice has lost a lot of depth and variety. I haven't got anywhere near enough understanding of singing to work out whether that is true or not, but you do?
I didn’t know about this, but it makes sense. I saw them a bunch of times between 1997-2000, and he was often so out of breath he could barely scream for more than half a second and the singing was kind of garbled almost like he was intoxicated.

@@DrClumber I think newer stuff like Genesis is really good, and his songs with trippie redd and polyphia are both really damn good. Don't think he's gone anywhere. It's nothing new for a vocalist to have their peak in their younger years, even perfectly healthy ones.
I would definitely love to see a comparison between this and what he's doing on Ohms, or in his side project Crosses. Yes, it's less "screamy", but as a hardcore Deftones fan since Adrenaline I still love every bit of how his voice and style has matured. It's still haunting, moody, and unmistakably Chino.
DIE HARD Deftones fan here... Can apreciate the Billy Eilish comment, the whispery voice thing is very much something they both do (Not to mention she also does some DARK imagery, if you want to have more comparisons.). Infact, would love to see them do something together, now that you mention it.
One thing I really love about this channel and others like it (I'm a big fan of fairy voice mother too) is that, I've loved Deftones for nearly 30yrs, I've always considered Cheno to be a top tier vocalist, but videos such as this give me a new found appreciation for the WHY he is a great vocalist and the incredible talent that you don't appreciate when your a 10 year old first discovering them . RIP Chi. He really was my biggest influence as a musician. White Pony for me has been the benchmark for production. Terry Date hands down one of the best producers for that late 90's to early 2000's sound. Chino use to be very hit and miss with his vocals a while back but has been solid ever since.
I could seriously listen to you talk music all day. Your passion for music is so infectious and your insights make it feel like I'm discovering my childhood favorites for the first time all over again 🤘
The best part about Chino's singing is his note choices. He's constantly using upper extensions and notes outside the key to build tension. Sometimes he takes it even further and sings in between pitches. And yet it never sounds like he's accidentally singing out of tune. He always releases the tension eventually with a well-timed resolution.
I'm beyond excited to hear you review this!! Truly one of the most underrated rock songs... Great guitar riff.. Bass... Drums.... Voice.... Outstanding
God that snare gets me every time. I think you've got it a little backwards though, Billy has a little bit of that Chino style of singing. Deftones pretty much pioneered this style.
As much as I leaned into the Deftones growing up. I hope that you will cover the Dillinger Escape Plan's - Widower because of how diverse the song is. Lounge Jazzy/Rock/Metal intermixed beautifully.
This is THE SONG and video that made deftones my favorite back in the day. Back when Matt Pinfield had a late night show on MTV. Jaw dropped first time I saw this video. It will always be one of my favorites.
This was the first Deftones song I ever heard. I was a teenager when it came out, and whenever it would come on the radio, my friends and I cranked the volume *_UP!_* I'm so fond of this song for its unique composition, its iconic Deftones sound now that I've listened to so much of them over the decades, and it always takes me right back to some good times in my youth hanging out with friends. Love that people are still checking it out for the first time and having a good time with it!
Coming from a producer’s perspective, he is using a doubler effect with his vocals and a high shelf fry with his screams in this album. By far my favorite band in the world, my singing, guitar, bass and drums are all inspired behind this wonderful band. My next suggestion for you would be to check out his inhale screams on 7 words, Royal and Pink Maggit
I’ve always loved Deftones and had the opportunity to see them live a few times and of all the concerts i’ve been to, seeing My Own Summer live in the Celebrity Theater, Oct 4, 2004 in Phoenix AZ is one of my all time favorite live experiences.
Check out their latest album Ohms. Such a great album. Especially considering they’ve been around for over 30 years. For me their first two albums are my favorite, since I fell in love with them instantly upon hearing the song Bored…but I also feel that Ohms is Deftones’ best album.
I’m ok with the comparisons but it annoys me when people compare a band to someone way newer and say the band sounds like them. No, Billie Eilish sounds like Deftones.
See, that irritates cos it doesn’t matter who came first it’s not incorrect to say either way round, in fact it’s about which the listener heard first, so you don’t get to correct them. If A sounds like B, B sounds like A. No chronology involved. It’s like people are confusing it with who did a song first.
not true though. Deftones cannot possibly of been influenced by Billie Eilish, but she could have been influenced by them, so timing does make a difference.
I remember when I fell in love with this band, and bought my first Deftones album, White Pony. That was back in the day that even straight music CDs would have interactive via computer components, and White Pony had a Pac-Man-esque game with a white pony being chased by floating band member heads, and a MIDI version of *this* song (not on that album, of course) playing. I remember playing that often, just so I could listen to the main riff of this over and over again. I also used to sleep to the album, because I'm odd. But there's something calm and comforting about their sound, even with the screams.
I really love when these videos start to feel like a class in music theory. As someone who has always enjoyed all of this music but is completely ignorant regarding the fundamental aspects of music/sound/voice, it is extremely interesting to learn that specific aspects of the music I've always enjoyed have almost scientific explanations as to why.
Passenger!!!! I experimented with Ecstasy when that song first came out a long time ago. As my friend was driving down the rd with the windows down. We lived in the woods where there was almost no houses or street lights. It was an experience i could never fully describe, but Beautiful is a start❤ I still get such goosebumps when i hear Maynard come in on that song.
I was almost getting giddy waiting to see your reaction to the first chorus, and you didn't disappoint. This is my favorite Deftones song, and they always bring it when performing this one live.
This is my favorite Deftones track. I'd really like to see you react to Volbeat. They are a mix of rockabilly and metal from Denmark. Hope they are on your list. Might I suggest Lola Montez, The Devil's Bleeding Crown, and The Hangman's Body Count as a starting point. Love your channel .
I love the breadth of music investigated on this channel and I absolutely love your honest excitement getting into each song! And yes, I’m a huge deftones fan so I especially enjoyed this particular episode 😉 Thanks for this and all your content!
Elizabeth has made such astounding strides in heavy music. From genuinely having no clue to the plethora of subgenres to her now openly admittance to metal being her second favorite genre.. .. is it time to introduce her to Dani Filth in the 90s? Disk and Her Embrace, the Hallowed Be Thy Name cover? Is she ready? Also, NILE.
It's nice to see you demonstrate some of the concepts using a piano, and also your voice! I know you are an opera singer and I think illustrating what are you talking about rather than just describing it makes it easier to understand. Great video as always!
Chino was definitely screaming in an unhealthy way in this era. He blew out his vocal cords after White Pony (the next album after this) and his vocals have never been the same since.
Yep, quite a few harsh vocal teachers have suggested pitch screams are a very high risk starting point. I wish someone had told me this back in the day 😂😂 This is my go to technique but finding ways to do it safe is the key going forward. It feels like Chino really pushed range, messing with breath support etc. safe for in the studio, but on tour it was too much too often. It was the Wild West back then 😊
Most rock / metal / punk singers back in the day didn't know and didn't really care about blowing out their voice. I remember hearing tapes of Phil Anselmo singing like an actual opera singer in the late 80's and a year later the guy sounded like Chris Barnes without the "EEEEEEEEE". Lots of blown out voices from the 80's and 90's. Some of them recovered well, like Rob Halford, some of them not so much
This is the best reaction youtube channel i’vr encountered so far. I don’t watch many reaction videos, because most of them being so low effort. I love that you actually do or at least try to add to the content, and not just sitting i through!
In terms of analysing Chino's vocals, I gotta recommend checking out Hexagram, Bored, Digital Bath and Root. All of these are amazing songs with either sections, specific moments or the entire song being (at least to me) very interesting in terms of vocals.
You should check out HIM. You’d love Ville Valo’s voice. Their song Join Me In Death, or Right Here In My Arms. Or their cover of Wicked Game. Incredible voice, wonderful band

Finally ❤ my all- time favorite band for 27 years and album. R.I.P. Chi Ling Dai Cheng.
Shove it shove it shove it shove it!
He was such a talented dude rip Chi
To this day I still get goosebumps listening to Deftones🤘 the entire band as a whole and apart are so amazing!
Passenger is a good choice to check out since it has Maynard on guest vocals, if you haven't already.
She's done it, it's there if you wanna watch it
God that snare gets me every time. I think you've got it a little backwards though, Billy has a little bit of that Chino style of singing. Deftones pretty much pioneered this style.
Chino invented ASMR vocals. lol
Ah yes headbangers ball.... those were the days
"Minerva" is hands down their most beautiful track, in my opinion.
Is no opinion. Is fact.
Rosemary. Cherry Waves. Love Minerva but it’s overplayed lol I can thank YT comments for even checking out those two tracks
@@Weather_Nerd I was literally about to comment Rosemary, Cherry Waves and especially Phantom Bride!
@@rhiannonrecommends it's an opinion and a ridiculous one
Never liked that song or most of that album personally
Coming from a producer’s perspective, he is using a doubler effect with his vocals and a high shelf fry with his screams in this album. By far my favorite band in the world, my singing, guitar, bass and drums are all inspired behind this wonderful band. My next suggestion for you would be to check out his inhale screams on 7 words, Royal and Pink Maggit
"Pink Maggit" is so goddamned good.
This song and album was my introduction to Deftones. I'll always love this song for that! ❤
Same!
I’ve always loved Deftones and had the opportunity to see them live a few times and of all the concerts i’ve been to, seeing My Own Summer live in the Celebrity Theater, Oct 4, 2004 in Phoenix AZ is one of my all time favorite live experiences.
1000% he knew what he was doing! That's why we love Chino!
I just saw the song you are covering and already you earned the Like on TH-cam
Check out their latest album Ohms. Such a great album. Especially considering they’ve been around for over 30 years. For me their first two albums are my favorite, since I fell in love with them instantly upon hearing the song Bored…but I also feel that Ohms is Deftones’ best album.
People in general don't really know that deftones not only have been around for over 30 years but actually just short of 40 years
YESSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!! - Lets get back on the Deftones train, Thank you for this. ❤🔥❤🔥
I think the William Eye Lash comparison is spot on. It’s rare for a singer in a heavy band to be as dynamic as Chino.
The Billie Eilish comparison is spot on for the whispered sections. I bet Billie and Chino would sound great together in a very unlikely collaboration
This is my absolute favorite Deftones song! And one of the first songs I learned to play on guitar. So stoked that you're reacting to it.
Since I was a wee lass they've influenced me, my art my poetry, a soundtrack for my life and in the quiet moments to myself
Also you gotta know, Chi Chang was doing backup vocals! RIP
Shove it shove it
You should check out Chino's side projects: Crosses or Team Sleep!
🎉 Blvd. Nights ❤
Palms 🤘🏼
Death by Plane
All I saw
We need more Deftones and NIN analysis 🖤🖤🖤
Living in the south in MS, I feel this song in it's purest form on a hot July day with the sun beating down on you.
Shaaaaaaark shove it shove it shaaaaaaaaark
Daaaamn 😮
I was almost getting giddy waiting to see your reaction to the first chorus, and you didn't disappoint. This is my favorite Deftones song, and they always bring it when performing this one live.
The Deftones have been around since 1988 so they probably influenced all the bands and artists you mentioned.:)
Saw them live twice on this tour and many more times after.
Digital bath is a must in your Deftones journey
Love her reactions/insight on her videos!!
Love your channel
.
Also, NILE.
I think she'd go crazy for Nymphetamine (Fix)
NOW WE'RE TALKING! Deftones is what it is. Love from Brazil!
Some of them recovered well, like Rob Halford, some of them not so much
Had the pleasure to see them live. Was great. Would love you to do a reaction to Primus!
Winona’s big brown beaver…got to do the video though…
QUEENS OF THE STONE AGE
Go with the flow?
I know she'll go for something there's a video or live performance for, but I reaaaalllly want to see her react to Mosquito Song
“Sick sick sick” would be dope
Literally anything would be amazing 😁
Anything by QOTSA
I'd be surprised if she didn't know Join Me In Death. Not like it's a particularly unknown song. lmao
Yeah baby! Let’s go❤
