I have a gift when it comes to fashion. In fact, after I lost my complete eyesight 11 years ago, I thought my love for fashion and shopping was over. No way! It has only developed more beautifully! I have learned that you don’t have to have eyesight to have vision! I can visualize looks in my mind and bring them to life. Since I have had some but very little usable eyesight growing up, I have learned all my colors, and still to this day can recall them all so vividly with my minds eye. You should go to my playlist on my channel, “shopping Blind with Joy“, and check out how I shop for clothes completely blind. :-)

Thank you so much for this. I would be so nervous helping someone who is blind so as not to appear ignorant or unhelpful. I mean, I know the basics not to touch people without their permission or to pet their dog but thats about it. I would just ask everything, "is this ok?" "is that ok" and probably be annoying!! lol

lambchopxoxo "What do you want me to do?" Or "What do you need?" Will get you far. My experience, as long as you are open, friendly and willing to learn, you will get there. And don't be afraid if you mess up, I once told my blind friend to get me the purple item out of a row, we just laughed about it.

The cpr/aed class I’m teaches us some tips for guiding the blind. Always ask permission if you’re going to touch them. Over long distances tell them where they are and how close to the destination. Tell them if people/ obstacles are coming. My college campus has a decent sized blind population and has audible crosswalks.

Thanks for wanting to help! The WORST thing to do is to push -- however gently -- the blind person in front of you, even in a narrow passage. That risks you missing an obstacle. It's safest to offer your elbow, so the blind person can follow closely behind you.

I used to worked at a grocery store in the front end/customer service desk, and there was a blind man that came in quite frequently, and would ask for assistance shopping (he didn't have a guide dog btw). He would always come straight to the desk, with a buggy, which was super handy for helping him. What I would do is basically walk beside him and guide the buggy around while he was holding on to it. Then he just told me what he needed and we would go around and shop.
He came in during hours that were never busy, and was very patient if he had to wait for someone to be available. The store I worked at was pretty large, and a bit higher-end, which is why it was acceptable for an employee to basically be someone's personal shopper for half an hour. My supervisor would just take over the customer service desk position for that time, or close down a cashier lane and get them to help out.

I've been assisting a blind 9-year old in church for several months now and it's interesting to see the variety in preferences when it comes to guiding! He personally loves to be guided by touch, he'd reach out for my fingers and tell me to guide his hands to something. When he reaches out, I know that he's reaching out for my hands. He's so full of joy and his favorite thing to feel around are car seats and car doors. He said that the one thing he'll do the most of he gains sight is to drive a car.

    • @teehlfx5238
      @teehlfx5238 5 ปีที่แล้ว

Neptune Vibe If the world was set up for visually impaired people it wouldn’t be an issue. It’s just that majority of the world is set up for sighted people, ignoring the needs of all people, that makes it difficult. There’s nothing inherently ‘less than’ about someone who is blind. Rather than pity I think it helps to put it back on society and spread awareness and think about how society needs to change.

A few months ago at my job(I work in retail) an older gentleman came in and he had a walking stick and stood in the middle of an aisle he seemed lost and he explained to me that he needed help picking up his prescription as well as leaving the store. This was my first encounter with a blind person I was trained on how to deal with people with disabilities and I didn’t want to screw anything up and I asked him to follow me and he joked with me saying how could he follow if he can’t see so I asked if he can place his hand on my elbow as I walked with him to the pharmacy to get his medication and walked him outside the store and onto the sidewalk as he waited for his ride and I was afraid I messed up but not offering my elbow first. This video did shed light on how to properly approach someone who is blind so thank you very much for this. This is an extremely helpful video.

Lovely video Joy! I reacted a bit when you mention the part about petting your guide dog. I was raised to never ever approach a Guide Dog, pet it, gesture towards it or speak to it due to the fact that it's indeed working. When it comes to non-working dogs, if I want to pet it I always ask the owner before doing so. If the owner says no it doesn't matter what the reason is! Hate people who just walk up and starts petting dogs without asking for and waiting for permission. :(

As a visually impaired person at myself. I think it is a great thing educate people about the proper way to handle interactions in contact with. I don't think there's nearly enough awareness or education around about it and that's why I think it's such a great thing about you take upon yourself to use your experiences to educate others.

Great vid :-). What I would like to add is that a blind friend of mine who uses a cane and has no dog prefers to put her hand on the shoulder of the anonymous person assisting her rather than taking the elbow. So, that's an alternative if either one of the people are maybe not comfortable with physical contact.
When my friend and I are in a crowded bar we basically just play cho-cho train so she will walk behind me with both of her hands on my shoulders while I plow the way through the people for us. Also, a bar we like has the world's worst spiral stairs down to the restrooms and we haven't died yet, so that may seem like a solid strategy for some situations.
Just adding my two cents :-).

WhatAStrangeDuck honestly you are such a good friend for assisting them!!! In addition to that, I wish I had a friend to choo choo train around the bar (and I’m a person with sight) keep being you!

Also I think it’s so crazy that a lot of blind people are so freaking beautiful?!? Also I love her personality! She is just too cute! So is her daughter! 😍

Very Good video Joy ! It goes to reinforce some of the positive comments I've made on a couple of your other videos about the need for Clear Communication with a Visually Impaired person, this will let the V.I.Person know that we are there to help keep Them Safe in an outdoor or indoor environment. When Guiding someone, we are taught to be about half a step infront of them at all times, let them take our left arm ( If they have their Guide Dog with them ), and guide the person by using small movements of our left arm as we walk, such as moving our left arm behind our body when accessing narrow spaces such as doorways. This action causes the Guided person to walk in file behind us and get safely through the environment. Another more sensitive point when conversing with a Blind or V.I. person, talk with them as if they are sighted, we don't really have to adapt our methods of conversing, talk to them using day to day phrases such as " See you later " or " I was watching t.v. last night . . . . . " Don't be scared to use ordinary language, it relaxes the two of us ! Great video, keep up the good work Joy, Isabella and Antonia ! Mike.

this video helped me quite a bit. There is a girl on my hall in college who is blind and I always am at a loss for how I should approach her if she needs help or not. My RA does a great job escorting her to the dining halls and what not, but sometimes she has students help her out too. One time she had asked me for directions and I really didn't know how to give her accurate descriptions of where to go, and after I gave her directions I completely out of habit said "see you later" and I felt awful... I did not mean to say something that would be offensive but as seeing individual I rarely take into account the way that sight impacts my life, and I unfortunately was slightly rude and inconsiderate to someone who does not have sight, even though that was not my intention. I really just want to be able to be a good peer to my friend and also respectfully interact with people who are blind or hard of sight. Thank you so much!
