I am a German living in Australia and to see a German and an Australian in China is so wholesome xD It’s especially funny when you know all three cultures yourself.
My sister-in-law is an Australian with Chinese heritage and married a German. Her husband definitely can eat chili paste and often consuming it by the jar (one jar would last 2-3 meals)
Derk adds a real nice dimension to the vlogs! His comment about how can food be this good and so cheap is really worth thinking about though. Cost of living differences aside, I think it's strange that all of us have been conditioned to think that good food needs to be expensive.
In China, expensive food is concentrated in fancy hotels and scenic spots, while food in other places is usually at ordinary prices. I would like to know if the delicious food in the West means expensive?
Some of the best food I've had in various parts of the world have been from street vendors for very cheap. My favorites include bradwurst @Munich (5 euros for two plus rosti and a pint of beer!!!), shengjianbao @Shanghai (5 kuai for 6 iirc), crepes Suzette @Courchevel. Japan is great at streetfood too! Singapore Hawkers also.
you cant imagine how many times i come back for this video!!!!!!! Mid summer night, pouring rain, lovely couple, warm family style shops. its like a Chinese version of 'A Rainy Day in New York' or we should call it 'A Rainy Day in Changchun'? Such a vibe i love it so so much.
Yes exactly and very friendly too 🥰 honestly i think the owner of the stall is pretty. Also i think the stall is clean as well. No dirt or food stain on the walls.
The main difference is that Malatang is like buffet that you can choose different ingredients as many as you want with sesame source added. Mixian is that you eat whatever chef makes for you, and it definitely has rice noddle in it, where Malatang doesn't have to.
yeah, Malatang means soup + mala. it can have anything added to it. Mixian means rice noodle, it can also have anything to it. I once went to a restaurant where they actually serve mixian like a rice noodle without soup, only with mixtures of sesame paste.
This is not even a standard restaurant but the lady boss service level and passion for food is on another level. Put this place to my to-visit list for next adventure back to China
It's impressive how you slip into Chinese accents and German and then back to east coast Aussie. My mouth was watering when you described the flavour of the dish. The family at the restaurant was so lovely.
Derk is such a lovely and genuinely nice guy! And I love how he reacted to the food, he's very open-minded and adventurous. Love you two together, and Amy, you just couldn't stop smiling when you're with Derk, and I don't think anyone can blame you for that, I mean what a great guy! Thanks for a great video, and stay safe!
It was such a warm experience. I'm really happy you enjoyed it. Northeasterners treasure rainy days, especially when you paying a visit to some place or someone. It carries two meanings, 1. 洗尘 meaning "dust off and get rid of the tiredness " 2. 留客天 meaning "God/fate wants you to stay longer (to enjoy the hospitality of the hosts)". There is a wording game regarding the 2nd meaning. Try adding punctuations in the following sentence "下雨天留客天留我不留", then you will get very different meanings, such as 1.
You and Derk together are super synergistic! Love that Derk is open to trying anything and everything. He should try Chongqing spicy hot pot as the Spice King
Watching Derk try to speak Chinese made me feel so much more confident that I, who speak very little Chinese as well, could try to visit China and be just FINE :D Thanks Amy for the video! This was so fun. The conversation about seeing the two of you tomorrow with the restaurant people was so cute.
Mixian is actually rice noodles in Chinese, so it’s mainly noodles in the dish. But Malatang means boiling all sorts of things in numbing, spicy flavour. So there might be noodles inside as well as all sorts of other things, like veggies, toufu, etc. That’s to say in Malatang noodles is just 1/10 of the dish.
Glad you love Northeast Malatang. I grown up in Dongbei. So, maybe I will say something about the difference between Malatang and Mixian. Noodles in Malatang made of wheat, but Mixian made of rice. Mixian means rice noodles. Actually, neither Mixian or Malatang born in Dongbei. Malatang came from Sichuan province and Mixian came from Yunnan province. But they have some special Dongbei local taste after they come here. For Dongbei malatang, they put many many many sesame paste in it. For Dongbei Mixian, the soup is more salty than yunnan version. In my opinion, Yunnan Mixian is more like light diet to extrude the delicate flavor of food itself(like mushrooms). Anyway, the food in Dongbei is more slaty, because people need it against cold winter. So sad I just leave Changchun, or I could take you guys more local food. Sorry for my poor English. Love your videos. Peace out
Derk is so lovely. Amy, it is so nice to see you both again. I have been to Changchun, 40 yrs ago. It was heavily polluted, a densely industrialized city. I did not like it much. Through your lens I can see the huge change. I hope you &Derk both enjoy your stay there. I love your saying 'Peace out'. Love you both. Stay blessed 🙌
Lol he's so adorable when he smiles and is speaking Chinese and trying so hard, then goes right back to eating. lol you guys are so cute together I hope you have a very happy life together forever and ever! :)
Seeing two people being so happy be be in the other's company is so sweet and refreshing. It's clear yall bring the best in each other and makes the already good video better. Happy for u amy!
I think Germans also like heavy flavoured food, a bit similar to people in some areas of China, including Northeast. And most Chinese would like German food, such as sausages, sauerkraut, and pork shanks. It will be intersting to see Derk’s reaction on Northeast prickled cabbage (东北酸菜)if Derk has yet got the chance to try it.
It could be cheap because China is a big country where most food produce comes in abundance and also the market is saturated with many sellers so price can be competitive or reasonable.
Derk is very handsome!! So happy to see you guys being happy and that Derk is enjoying himself as much as you. Wishing both of you all happiness and continue to spread joy with your videos!
Loving seeing you both together. I don’t know about you, but I love being the tour guide for visiting friends and family. Seeing them experience something for the first time brings me a special kind of joy and this is what your last two videos have provided.
Your love for Chinese food comes through in all your videos. It's good to see your happiness coming through with your boyfriend as well. He seems like a very genuine and nice person. Looks like he will challenge you to see who can eat the spiciest meal.
Gotta love the spontaneity of going from filling up on noodles and then to a plate of dumplings. I guess the rain allowed for adequate digestion time between pit stops because that seemed like too much in one sitting.
麻辣烫 is traditionally a hotpot that’s cooked for you with sauce. The word 烫 is a verb in the name not an adjective. In 东北 they’ve just made it their own. 米线 on the other hand is often cooked in little pots in the southwest and that’s probably why they cook it that way
It is so fun and lovely to watch you two together! I am amazed how typically german Derk is and how charming that is. Being german myself I never considered that a good thing before. Please a lot more content like that, Susi & Strolch!🥰
So cute to see you and Derk on this first food-venture together and the malatang looks so delicious! Can't wait to see where you will take him to next? Maybe some bingfen.. ..??? ;)
@@TubeSqrl I believe bingfen is now popular all across China. It used to be rare in north China, I can remember back in 2007 when I was in Beijing the moment I saw a hotpot restaurant serving bingfen I was almost cry.
9:51 Changchun - Besides naming a place/person for what it is, it's also usual for Chinese culture to give names as a wish, hope or an aspiration, So in Changchun's case, it could be a wish that it has longer springs as oppose to reality where it has short springs being in the frigid Northeast region. This is without a doubt the best show on TH-cam and the best show compared to anything thats ever been on TV- absolutely the best viewing and shows China as such a real and down to earth place.
Life is just amazing that I am living in Munich seeing you bring your German boyfriend visiting my hometown Changchun. P.S. The name of Changchun is actually a beautiful wish because winter is too long and too cold there, hehehehe
I love how your videos became my homesick remedy. Miss everything in Changchun. Keep shooting these please!!! I will show this video to my husband and maybe we visit the same spots next year, when hopefully we will make it back home after then-would-be 4 years.
That massive bowl of malatang ? is terrific value and so many healthy ingredients, I love the idea of adding all your own ingredients and spices. I could see myself using that friendly family eatery many times a week if I was a local. ❤️
Ran into my neighbor this morning and he told me he's booked ticket and hotel for a Oct trip to Japan, already multiple times. I didnot suggest to have a trip to China. This video was great, it's so lovely seeing you and Derk together, he seems like a lovely guy. I was so jealous of that malatang, it did look really comforting. Whenever I've had malatang in Melbourne, I've never seen the sesame sauce but I really want it now!
Hi,Amy and Derek, it is so good to see you in Changchun. I had been in Changchun for four years in my Uni. I love this city except for crazy taxi drivers.😅 You have to try 东北菜 (锅包肉,东北拉皮,排骨炖豆角….)just keep it in mind the size is super big😀Enjoy!!
Amy & Derek you guys are so cute ! Exploring China together and trying out delicious food what a romantic experience ! Hope to see more videos of you two together !
So enjoyed watching both of you really having fun trying out new local Chinese food. It’s so good to watch your love blossoming. Hope to watch many more interesting and fun times.
米线is actually the vermicelli itself - noodle made of rice; whereas 麻辣烫is more a description of the dish - hot, spicy and numbing. Homesick food for me 100%.
As a native Chinese never been to Changchun, but this vlog really made me want to visit and explore the food there. Especially love to see the hospitality of the people there.

I love you two guys. You have so much fun together.
😂你们这一对情侣甜腻甜腻的,好幸福呀!中国路边小店的老板非常友善热情,真好。
You are living your best lives! I love watching you and Der together ! Sweet ❤️ !
As a native Chinese never been to Changchun, but this vlog really made me want to visit and explore the food there. Especially love to see the hospitality of the people there.
