I've been to China 4 times, (90s, 2002, 2006 and 2018) and I'm not proficient in Chinese language. The 2018 China (Shanghai, Suzhou, Hangzhou) trip blew my mind and just months ago I was in Texas Austin which is the place where many Americans are migrating to. The developments, the advancements, while maintaining their thousands of years cultural sites. The people are living their lives much better than my own country, no need to keep your eyes opened scanning surroundings wherever you go unlike America or UK wherever you go especially after dark, guns are not allowed if that makes you feel better. Austin is still in Texas...so its still kind of backwards. I lived in Beijing for 9 years, and it had its ups and downs, I would never claim "people were living better than in the USA" however.
Omg, there're a lot of moments in this video that I just want to dash into the screen and to HELP YOU! But very happy for you that you end up solved everything so well
First video of yours I have watched. Impressed, especially the manner in which you treat travel as exciting, new opportunities that await and so on. I used to work for a major airline and am so jaded and cynical over air travel. And I am in my 70s now, so it's nice to see places I may never visit, from a European perspective. Keep up the good work
LOVE your video! As an oversea Chinese, I would have less stress arriving at China. However, your video shows how most foreigners will feel and I appreciate it. Thank you for having an open mind and willingness to visit this ancient civilization that has stepped into the modern age! Can’t wait to see your other videos

Honestly dude you're so brave enough while traveling there in China and so proud that you're struggling and in the end you are almost be positive and solve all the challenges you may encounter. I'm Chinese and so fun watching you having interactions with those people in Shanghai!
Glad to see people going to China again. There were few visitors last time I went. It’s really a country with so much to explore. Great video by the way!
Great sense of humor and adventure! I’m happy you were able to experience the confusion upon arrival. I used to travel to China 2-3 times a year for work. A lot has changed since my first trip there in 2001.
I have never been to China, but I know that it is a relatively advanced country, and its technology is also very extraordinary. That's what I heard from those who have been there.
It is. My friends who works there say Shanghai is like 20 years ahead in many sector. Its a cashless and keyless society. All you need is a phone to do everything you meed efficiently. Everything gets done quickly without drama.

I’ve just got back from Shanghai and I really enjoyed it. I’ve lived in Qingdao and visited Beijing, Changsha and Sanya before so I’m very familiar with China. Getting through customs and immigration was a lot more stressful than before covid though. To really enjoy the experience you should learn a little Chinese because not many locals speak English and lots of the best restaurants etc aren’t really visited by many foreigners. I love how open minded and spontaneous you are great video!
Yes, that's good advice. But in fact, as long as many foreigners download a Google translation APP, they can solve the communication with Chinese people very well.Chinese people are also willing to help foreign tourists.❤

Authentic Shanghai local cuisine is not supposed to be spicy. However, you may encounter restaurants where they serve food from other regions, such as Sichuan and/or Hunan, that are known for very hot and spicy food. So it's always a good idea to ask or check the menus first, and they should be written in both Chinese and English. Have fun!
@@seanmcdirmidYou can actually find pretty much anything in Shanghai, the size it is, but sometimes it is hard, yes. The Shanghai maglev train is a magnetic levitation train (maglev) line. The line uses the German Transrapid technology. The Shanghai maglev is the world's first commercial high-speed maglev and has a maximum cruising speed of 431 km/h , making it the fastest train service in commercial operation. The train line connects Shanghai Pudong airport to Line 2 and Langyang Road Station train station where passengers can interchange to the Shanghai Metro to continue their trip to the city center. The journey takes 7 minutes and 20 seconds to complete the distance of 30 km.The train was inaugurated in December 2002 by the German Chancellor Gerhard Schroder and the Chinese premier, Zhu Rongii.
@@giantpanda7598 It was designed and produced in Germany, but because it was extremely expensive, Germany did not purchase it. It was only built and put into use in China. It is also the only commercial maglev subway in operation in the world.
Maglev was developed by Siemens and Thyssen-Krupp in 70-ies. Too expensive for Germany since it requires new infrastructure. Test track was made but later demolished due to high maintenance cost.
I'm thinking of going back to Shanghai next year. This will encourage me to revisit the city. You need to stay more than 6 days to really appreciate what Shanghai has to offer. Your video is very entertaining.
For your first time traveling to China and not knowing the language, I was amazed at how well you managed to navigate the airport and do all that stuff. China is a very beautiful country.
At the noodle store, you had “zhajiang Mian” or zhajiang noodles, which is a staple noodle dish found in north china and Korea. It looked very delicious by the way. The girl at the restaurant actually translated “delicious” for you, it’s “Mei Wei”. But she directly said it to the restaurant guy rather than to you. She told him “he says your food is delicious”, that’s why he responded immediately with a smile and “thank you”! Great to see the friendly vibes in Shanghai… Shanghai is pretty much the New York of china people living there are fast, friendly, straight forward, sassy!
“zhajiang Mian” is more popular in Korea than China and Korean style is so different (I can see that in the video) that it is now 😄😁considered a Korean dish.
Hahaha, you may think that all the dishes in the world are Korean. Whenever Chinese food is introduced into Korea, Koreans begin to say that it is Korean food a month later. In fact, Zhajiang Noodles was brought to Korea by immigrants from China.
As a Chinese person, I can tell you for sure. The kinds of food in China are extremely numerous. I've been a Chinese for around 23 years and I still often eat delicacies that I've never seen before
There are eight major food series in China, each with its own unique characteristics. And each province also has unique cuisine that can only be enjoyed within that province. It is not an exaggeration to say that there may be millions of types of food or vegetables throughout China. There are always some dishes that taste very delicious to you.
Seeing your happy face i can imagine how excited you are in a new country, trust me bro same happens with me.. China is definitely in my travel bucket list.. Have a good stay in Shanghai

Hi Ken, my wife are fans of yours and have been enjoying all your videos in SE Asia. I always hoped that you would someday visit China as well. We love the way you fearlessly immerse yourself into the local neighbourhoods and interact with local people. You have a knack for adapting to any situation and making connections with people, even when there is a big language barrier. I'd suggest trying a famous fried bun called "Sheng Jian Bao" 生煎包. Be careful not to burn your mouth on the hot soup when you bite into them! The hot soup can sit in pockets and squirt out unexpectedly.
I'm in Shanghai right now. Lived here from 95 to 03 and come back often (wife is Shanghainese). I was cringing while watching but then just enjoyed it because you did almost exactly what I do when going to a new place. This is actually my first trip in 6 years (covid) and, yes, the city is MUCH quieter. Not only are many of the cars electric, but the city busses are as well. And most importantly the Mopeds are electric (they probably made the most noise in the old days). Shanghai is 180 degrees different, crowd wise and pollution wise, than 20 years ago. What I am having the hardest time dealing with is the whole WeChat or Alipay thing and not being able to use cash. I heard that foreigners can get away with using cash at times and you proved that to be true. Have fun.
As a Chinese, I feel that we do not consider many aspects properly, such as the payment of foreigners, but I heard that foreigners can recharge up to 1,000, is it true?
I am going to china in 6 months. I will be there for Four weeks. I am worried about the money part now. I will be in Hong Kong for 8 days alone, the other places are Beijing, Xi'an, Shanghai, etc. what way does one pay then? I have 6 months to figure this out. Thank you.
@@marshacooper9088Don't worry, for any problem there will also be a solution. They will have thought about it long ago, before implementing the new methods for payment. Besides, it is one of the cities with the most foreigners in China.
Love Shanghai. My favorite mainland city. I lived in Shenzhen, China, for three years. Was very interesting. Had my own apartment. Never had a problem there as an American living there. Some great times. It was good too that it was close to Hong Kong. Went to HK almost every weekend.
This is truly amazing, as someone who wants to tour China one day I found this very interesting and entertaining, just the different culture and its funny and nice to see how wholesome people are.
Don't be stressed, be excited. You shouldn't really travel alone to China for the first time, with a local friend would be much easier. Shanghai is much better than other Asian cities, if you know where to go. Lots of foreigners live in Shanghai, and the more you see, the more you will like Shanghai :)
Actually, my first time to Tokyo. It’s subway system is also confused me . I made a lot of effort to understand how to buy tickets and which line i should take. It would be more convenient you can get a subway card via the apple wallet before you arrive there. 😅
This is my first time watching your video. I’m very happy that you have a good impression on your first arrival to Shanghai. Shanghai is a big city with very advanced technology and facilities. For me, I would prefer doing some research before I arrive China, to play safe and to understand everything. I know it’s real fun for boys to enjoy excitement of new adventure and explore everything without preparation. Same for my man. Hope you have a splendid experience for the rest of your stay in China.

I have experienced the "Only Chinese Speakers" at Emergency Exit Seats. This does make some sense that the crew can instruct the person to use the Emergency Exit. I lived in Shanghai and Chengdu (home of the Panda) for 6 years. The Mag Lev is a German build Magnetic Levitation train. I love your enthusiasm! The Chinese are kind, friendly and a little intrigued by foreigners. If you lived in Chengdu, they would stare at you, because they haven't seen a Westerner, before. This gets a bit of getting used to. 555
It's fairly rare for a Chinese carrier to let you choose your own seat at booking, both on planes and trains. If the option ever comes up it would be when you physically check in.
Aww would have been cool if you tried out Maglev train from the airport! Its actually also based on German technology, could have gotten you to the city in 8 minutes.
Hi Ken. Very interesting video. Yes, going to China can be quite a challenge for non Chinese speakers, even in big cities like Shanghai. It's been 6 years since my last home trip to Shanghai. Glad things worked out your way eventually. You should have just taken the taxi in the first place. Being a foreigner gave you a friendly and understanding pass by the locals who tend to frown upon cash nowadays. Cash is used so rarely that businesses don't know what to do with it.

First video of yours I have watched. Impressed, especially the manner in which you treat travel as exciting, new opportunities that await and so on. I used to work for a major airline and am so jaded and cynical over air travel. And I am in my 70s now, so it's nice to see places I may never visit, from a European perspective. Keep up the good work
Another new series coming from a mega city Shanghai.I'm so looking forward to coming along with you through your eyes once again.Enjoy Ken!💕🇲🇾
LOVE your video! As an oversea Chinese, I would have less stress arriving at China. However, your video shows how most foreigners will feel and I appreciate it. Thank you for having an open mind and willingness to visit this ancient civilization that has stepped into the modern age! Can’t wait to see your other videos
This is amazing. I always need to plan everything down to the very last detail when I travel. This has inspired me to take a bit of that stick out from where it doesn't shine and loosen up. I am already less stressed about my next trip. Thank you!
Honestly dude you're so brave enough while traveling there in China and so proud that you're struggling and in the end you are almost be positive and solve all the challenges you may encounter. I'm Chinese and so fun watching you having interactions with those people in Shanghai!
Brave enough wtf? China is one of the safest cities in the world for tourists.
Glad to see people going to China again. There were few visitors last time I went. It’s really a country with so much to explore. Great video by the way!
No wonder if it got so many sanctions from the US which put it on bad spot light.

Last time when I visited Shanghai and BeiJing just before the pandemic, I felt like I came from the third world, and I am from the Silicon Valley!@@blardymunggas6884
if you plan to go to China, the first time is better go to Shanghai or Beijing.
China isn’t advanced, it’s cities are falling apart, and most of the country is about third world tier.
Majority of the Chinese population is poor and the whole country is extremely corrupt.

Is the maps and everything internet in China only in Chinese, or can be in English too?
Yes, that's good advice. But in fact, as long as many foreigners download a Google translation APP, they can solve the communication with Chinese people very well.Chinese people are also willing to help foreign tourists.❤

Authentic Shanghai local cuisine is not supposed to be spicy. However, you may encounter restaurants where they serve food from other regions, such as Sichuan and/or Hunan, that are known for very hot and spicy food. So it's always a good idea to ask or check the menus first, and they should be written in both Chinese and English. Have fun!
Shanghai is kind of boring for Chinese food. You can find sichuan/hunan food, but it isn't very good compared to similar in Beijing.

Is there a maglev train in Germany? Where is it?
@@giantpanda7598 It was designed and produced in Germany, but because it was extremely expensive, Germany did not purchase it. It was only built and put into use in China. It is also the only commercial maglev subway in operation in the world.
Maglev was developed by Siemens and Thyssen-Krupp in 70-ies. Too expensive for Germany since it requires new infrastructure. Test track was made but later demolished due to high maintenance cost.
Thanks for sharing your journey. I loved that you shared your raw experience there. I’m looking forward to watching the rest of this series!

one of the hardest parts of traveling is trying to figure out a new city after taking a long journey when you are really tired. great video
I'm thinking of going back to Shanghai next year. This will encourage me to revisit the city. You need to stay more than 6 days to really appreciate what Shanghai has to offer. Your video is very entertaining.
Yeah 6 days is definitely not enough
Fantastic to see amazing China through the eyes of a newcomer. Well done Ken!
OMG,Finally seeing u come to 🇨🇳,Soooo Welcoming !Shanghai is a very modern city. Looking forward to ur series of adventures here!
Happy to visit Shanghai 🙏
You'll have fun in Shanghai. Lots of foreigners. The city is so modern and clean and people so friendly.
The 炸酱面 looked very nice. If you can find it, also try 担担面 (DanDan Mian)
Have a good stay in Shanghai

great of u to share your 1st day in Shanghai! 👍
Thank you.
