About the marching up to the enemy lines.
The idea was that at ranges beyond 50m muskets were very inaccurate. So instead of trading shots at range, against armies 2-4 times larger than the swedish forces, the Caroleans would advance through the inaccurate volleys to about 20m from the enemy and then, ideally, catch the enemy as they were reloading and fire their own volley at deadly and accurate range. This shock and hail of deadly fire was then followed by an all out charge into melee, something the Caroleans trained in to an expert level, armed with swords, bayonets and pikes.
The deadly close range volley combined with a brutal charge into close combat allowed the Caroleans to time and time again defeat armies that outnumbered them 2-4 times their own size
Sabaton themselves are very much on the side of peace. They are interested in military history and believe we should learn from history so that it does not repeat itself. Instead of making up lyrics about whatever, they've decided there are more than enough important stories to be told across history.

It used to be said back in time in the army that "you should (only) fear God, be faithful and loyal to the King". That was a time when the christian God wasn't seen as very tolerant and forgiving. King Karl XII (Carolus Rex in latin) considered himself as choosen by God to be the king of Sweden and lead the army into war and combat. Karoliner (Caroleans) was what the soldiers were called of the Swedish king Karl XI and Karl XII's army 1682-1718.

When sweden attacked russia in 1700s they were not aloud to fire until they could see the white in the enemies eyes, meanwhile russia fired canons at the carolieans in chest hight, but the caroleans closed the gap when their brothers been and kept on walking. Aproxemently 7000 caroleans vs 39000 russians, and the russians started fleeing. Until a russian comander forced them back to their stations. Unfortunatly then the swedes lost the battle and had to escape.
Sweden attacked Russia? Nah it was Denmak-Norway, Russia and Prussia ganging up on Sweden(including Finland, Karelia, Ingria (St.Petersburg region today), Estonia, Latvia & Pommerania) and Sweden defeated them all, except Russia.
Partly due to the Ottomans were sitting on their hands and the Cossack mercenaries were cowards.

Sadly, it's quite clear that the translator knows swedish, but English to a lesser degree. As a native Swedish speaker I'd change quite a bit. We use the same word for "a", "an" and one" and there's a lot of other weird quirky mistranslations

The english translation is pretty bad to be honest. Small words and aberations makes such a huge difference in swedish and english.
As many have said, This song is about the caroleans, which where very devoted protestants. The 30 years wars, 1618-48, was mostly a war between the protestants and chatolic chruches. In the end, the protestants was considered to "win" the war, hence why most northen European countries, and most central european, is considered protestants to this day (even if the catholic church still have a lot of followers in central europe as well).
I just want to point out as well, this is in a lot of ways very important to remember about the band, they do not in any way take side with any religion or politics. They focus on military history, that we should learn and not make the same mistakes humanity always do. They have a lot of good songs that shows kinda interessting perspectives from all sorts of conflicts and sides throu out history.
Love your channel, a lot of songs have been pretty interesting choices, and nice to hear thoughts from religious persons that are not close minded.

On the topic of killing someone as a Christian. I think the Caroleans saw it in the context of the Great northern war that they didn’t start the war. Sweden was attacked by 3 nations. And “Thou shalt not kill” is by most Christians about unlawful killing/murder. Killing in self defense is not breaking the commandment.
It helps that we saw the attackers as Heretics, of which the punishment is made quite clear.
The swedes in general but the soldier in particular were very much Devout Christians, Moral offenses in the army where harshly punished, one punishment where to run through a gauntlet ( around 300) of soldiers having rods that they would use to strike the offending person while he ran, this could be ordered to be several tries, there's a story of a guard that neglected his duty while guarding the royal castle and it burned down, he was ordered to run through the gauntlet 7 times. As for taking Gods name in vain (Blaspheme)...that was a crime punishable by death in the carolean army.

Kinsmen would be a better translation than comrades here and there are a lot of the parts here that are painfully inaccurate in the translation in the Swedish -> English parts.

Considering how many wars were ordained by God Himself in the Old Testament - who is the same God as the man Jesus in the New Testament - I don't think it's fair to say that all wars are evil. Wars ordained by God would always be just and for a righteous reason, be it for spilling out His wrath upon the enemy or to defend one's nation when it is being attacked. There are many factors that go into what makes a war just or unjust and depending upon those factors and the context therein, a war could be done in Christ's name and it be wrong, but a war could also be done in His name and be justified. It's not black and white. What we always have to remember is always judge a worldview by its proper use and never by its abuse. We cannot lay the evil done in Christ's name at His doorstep when He doesn't condone that evil in the first place. We must instead go to the perpetrator's of that evil and scold or punish them for it in accordance with the law.
