    Germany got completely boned by the Treaty of Versailles, and that imo was the direct cause of WWII. WWI wasn’t Germany’s fault. Austria/Hungary started the war, Germany was just their most powerful ally and did the most damage. Thank you for bringing truth to this subject. It’s so easy to just look at Nazi Germany and condemn them (and they absolutely deserve condemnation) without looking at the conditions that allowed their rise. France is just as responsible for what happened as Germany.
    I’ve been to Auschwicz twice, and it’s a haunting experience. It was 20 years ago, but I can still vividly remember the feeling of that place. It’s not a feeling of malice and anger, rather it’s a feeling of intense sadness and mourning. It’s like every soul lost at that place is there whispering to you “remember... remember this place, and never let it happen again.”

      Without the assurance Austria-Hungary got from Kaiser Wilhelm giving Austria-Hungary a so-called carte blanche, or “blank check” assurance of Germany’s backing in the case of war they would not dared start the war (WWI). Germany did struggle from the Treaty of Versailles but they were actually recovering quite well as they decideded to start the next war (WWII).
      I see this quite a lot where people try to remove blame from Germany but they were instrumental in starting two world wars and countless atrocities. Were they alone to blame for both WWI & WWII ? Obviously not but that does not make anything better. If a friend kills someone you don't say "Hey it could be worse you could have killed many"..

    • @calibadgerdude6082
      @calibadgerdude6082 3 ปีที่แล้ว +50

      tomasz I never said they weren’t. In fact, I explicitly said they deserved condemnation for their actions. My point is that there were factors that led them to a place where these atrocities could happen. It’s not a black and white issue. The allies all had their part in allowing hitler’s rise to power, not always through direct action, but certainly through inaction in the lead up to the Polish invasion. History is complex.

    • @calibadgerdude6082
      @calibadgerdude6082 3 ปีที่แล้ว +37

      logirex I wasn’t trying to remove or lessen blame from Germany, in fact I explicitly stated they deserved condemnation for what happened. It is true that the A-H/Germany alliance was a major contributing factor to the start of WWI, however the fact remains that Austria used the assassination of Frank Ferdinand (who they didn’t even like) as an excuse to further expand their imperialistic ambitions. Frankly, WWI was a stupid and pointless war and nobody behaved well during or after it. History is complex, and rarely black and white. However, it’s pretty clear that without the Treaty of Versailles completely ruining Germany’s economy and humiliating them to the point of ruin, Hitler would probably never have risen to power and WWII would likely never have happened. This in no way exculpates them from what happened, it just makes it easier to understand how they got to the point where a madman could rise to power and turn a nation to such a destructive path.

    • @FrancoUnAmericano
      @FrancoUnAmericano 3 ปีที่แล้ว +20

      @tomasz You can attribute the blame and still understand what lead up to it. It's not about saying that they were not responsible.

    • @Beuwen_The_Dragon
      @Beuwen_The_Dragon 3 ปีที่แล้ว +21

      @@logirex that is not the point at all.
      Simply pointing out that shifting all or even most of the blame for WWI and subsequently WWII onto Germany alone is in no way trying to lessen the results of the war.
      In fact it is to point out that the Allied Nations had just as much a hand in creating the circumstances for both Wars as Germany. And to ignore that is to ignore the lessons we should have learned so as not to repeat history again....
      The Western Allies made a Post War Germany Weak.
      And a Weak Germany was prime soil to grow The Nazi Party...
      Blame a mass killer for his actions, absolutely. But that doesn't mean we should then ignore the circumstances and ideas which made the killer who he was and motivated his actions.

    Huge respect for the after talk, explaining that there's always a reason behind what happens. Understanding the "why it happened" is the most important lesson we can get from our history, in order to prevent things from repeating.
    There's a lot that many people don't seem to know about the situation in Germany post WW1, but had the conditions for the German people not been so horrible, Hitler would most likely never have been able to gain a powerful position.

    Agree the treaty terms did push the people of Germany to the brink, allowing someone with "plans " to restore honor to the country. Which in reality Austrian/Hungary declared war on Serbia after the assassination of Arch Duke Ferdinand, starting the Great War. But Germany took the brunt of the responsibility. And when you look at the rise of Hitler, the Party killed or silenced all the opposed. With a madman in control, even general within the German Army tried to kill Hitler, almost succeeded with the bomb in the bunker. Not all supported him.

The tears aren't just for the ones who didn't escape, but also for the ones that did. The children who hid in flour sacks as their parents were torn away. There's a good book, Ordinary Men: Reserve Police Battalion 101. It gets into technicalities a lot, but suffice it to say that these men were all normal blokes you'd go out to have a drink with in the evening, who were made to think that erasing all the enemies of the state - so, killing pregnant mothers and razing down villages - was a necessity. So, Vin has a great point - most of us would be doing this if we thought the reason was sufficient enough, since to some people ideology is everything.

      It's about the diary of a German social democrat living in Nazi Germany - if he knows something them that is certainly information that would have been available to most Germans who bothered to look and find out.

    Hey Vin and Sori!!! Greetings from Finland! I've seen you guys doing alot of Finnish bands reactions, but you never have done Hanoi rocks!!! Hanoi rocks was a Finnish rock band, and they did great in the early 80's, until their drummer Razzle was killed in a car accident... That car was driven by the singer of Motley Crue Vince Neil. Try some Hanoi Rocks, it's pretty good :)

    I personally think metal is one of the best music genres for anti-war messages, since it by nature is rather dark. Sabaton, even being up beat power metal, is able to show the dark side of history. A lot of classical thrash metal bands have a lot of anti-war songs and black metal (not NSBM, just dont ...) has a lot of songs that also highlight the dark side of humankind.

    I'm late, I know. But I'd like to reccomend a book to @Vin
    "All Quiet on The Western Front"
    It was written by, I believe, a German veteran of WW1 detailing the mentality of the German soldiers. During the reign of the Third Reich, the book was banned and burned because it didn't glorify the German war effort.

    • @samuelmccarter4659
      @samuelmccarter4659 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      While that book may be representative of some of the more war weary soldiers and civilians it certainly didn't speak for the majority of soldiers who wanted to keep fighting only to get stabbed in the back

    • @Exodon2020
      @Exodon2020 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@samuelmccarter4659 The Dolchstoß was a rightoid Propaganda Ploy from the very beginning. The German Empire was on its knees - the frontline maybe a week away from collapse when Field Marshall Hindenburg approached the Kaiser and told him to initiate peace talks right away. The Civilian government has had virtually no authority ever since 1916 but they were good enough to be tasked with negotiating peace - so of course they would end up being the ones getting blamed.
      And the soldiers: They knew it was over. Supplies were depleting, morale was low and the enemy was becoming more superior by the hour. Books like "All qiet on the Western Front" as well as "Storm of Steel" got the overall mood across.

      @@Exodon2020 logistically your correct, the German heer couldn't have put up a fight for very much longer but, from what I've read it seems to me that the germans (especially the navy) still wanted to fight, much like the south after appomattox, the men didn't want to give up and have their incredible sacrifice all be in vain

    • @Exodon2020
      @Exodon2020 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@samuelmccarter4659 The Navy wanted to continue the fight? The staff and higher officers who could have easily saved themselves from their deck postings maybe, but the sailors who were supposed to man the guns and pressure the boilers deep within the bellies of those floating death traps were an entirely different story...
      At the very end of the war Germany descended into disarray and the spark setting off the Revolution and Germany becoming a Republic was lit in the moorings of the Imperial Navy in Kiel. Sailors left their posts and assumed control over the docks. Local factory and shipyard workers as well as the local army garrison joined them and together they occupied the City Hall. Outgoing from Kiel this Revolution soon engulfed every major German city, eventually forcing the Kaiser to abdicate and go into exile. Look up the Kiel Mutiny for reference.
      Naval High Command was dead set to once again face off the Royal Navy in one last decisive battle. But for what exactly? The goal of the Battle of Jutland was to break the British Blockade in order to reopen Germany's Trade Routes. With the US still being neutral achieving this would have put Germany at an advantage.
      However by 1918 there was nobody left to trade with - as pretty much everyone had either declared war on Germany or enacted an embargo on their end. And even if the Imperial Navy miraculously managed to defeat the Royal Navy they would have had to face the French and American Navy next. This order was nothing but pure madness.

    • @samuelmccarter4659
      @samuelmccarter4659 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Exodon2020 there is honor in a last stand, a last decisive naval victory could have put Germany in a more favorable position when bargaining with the allies. The German naval command acted with honor as required by naval officers. Now the men who mutinied should have been hung according to the laws of war, they showed a severe lack of honor and I may even go as far as to state there may have even been a hint of cowardice in those unlawful actions. Although you do have a point the kiel mutiny is intriguing to study, the takeaway all depends upon how you view it
