If you don't understand Swedish, you need to have subtitles to this. The lyrics of this song will make anyone who ever served cry. It is the ultimate test of stolen valor, if a veteran doesn't cry to this song, he didn't serve.

It wont make cry only those who served, even those who experienced war as civilians well shed a tear. I served military but i never been in war (and i hope i will never experience war again) but i did experienced it as civilian, and know the fear, desperation, despite been only a kid when that war happened. Every time i listen this song i start crying.

This song is timeless, if you've EVER served in any military and had to go to war this song puts a lot a deep thoughts to words.... it certainly did with me. It about made me full on cry thinking about how I felt and what was going through my mind once we were off the ground flying to Afghanistan.. a whole lot of time spent in introspection for sure.

Well done fighting against extremist fundamentalists spreading terror, respect from Sweden. With that said considering this song were nations literally was at war for more than 30 years. Think about those talibans that literally warring amongst other clans AND against the Sovjetunion back in the 80-90's thats a huge enemy to combat even if you are a highli trained american with awesome arsenals. :)

The "baptized & died in battle" lyrics refer to the human "fieldtrains" that followed the Soldiers abroad to the battles. Like their wives and children etc. There were Swedish kids that had their father serve & die in the war only for the kid who was born there to get baptized in war and later die in that war, because it lasted for 30 years.

This song is about the 30 years war, there are two separate lyrics to it, the Swedish, is more, pertinent to Sweden, the English is a more general overview, personally I think the Swedish lyrics are more powerful.
I look around and see my home disappear
Jag ser mig om och ser mitt hem försvinna bort
My time at home now feels far too short
Min tid där hemma känns nu alldeles för kort
Only youth, hardly a man when duty called me
Blott ungdom, knappt en man då plikten kallade mig
If I get to see my home again, I do not know
Om jag får se mitt hem igen det vet jag ej
Among relatives from my village, I went out to battle
Bland fränder från min by så drog jag ut i strid
    And the world burned
    Och världen brann
    For the war, it can
    För kriget, det kan
    Destroy a man
    Förgöra en man
I give my life for my homeland
Jag ger mitt liv för mitt fosterland
    But who misses me?
    Men vem saknar mig?
    So see me as it
    Så se mig som den
    A husband, a friend
    En make, en vän
Father and son never coming home
Fader och son som aldrig kommer hem
    But who mourns me?
    Men vem sörjer mig?
Went out in battle for Sweden, was baptized in blood
Gick ut i strid för Sverige, blev döpt i blod
Out there, death awaits, not heroism
Där ute väntar döden, inte hjältemod
In fields where relatives fall, no song is heard
I fält där fränder faller, hörs ingen sång
    Challenging our destinies, once again
Utmanar våra öden, ännu en gång
Far from home (baptized and die in battle)
Långt hemifrån (döpas och dö i strid)
    And the world burned
    Och världen brann
    For the war, it can
    För kriget, det kan
    Destroy a man
    Förgöra en man
I give my life for my homeland
Jag ger mitt liv för mitt fosterland
    But who misses me?
    Men vem saknar mig?
    So see me as it
    Så se mig som den
    A husband, a friend
    En make, en vän
Father and son never coming home
Fader och son som aldrig kommer hem
    But who mourns me?
    Men vem sörjer mig?
And when my time has run out
Och när min tid har runnit ut
    Who cares then?
    Vem bryr sig då?
    They are struggling
    De kämpar på
Does a soldier get a dignified end?
Får en soldat ett värdig slut?
    Get to sleep
    Få somna in
    Disappear
    Försvinna bort
    And never wake up
    Och aldrig vakna
    For the war, it can
    För kriget, det kan
    Destroy a man
    Förgöra en man
I give my life for my homeland
Jag ger mitt liv för mitt fosterland
    But who misses me?
    Men vem saknar mig?
    So see me as it
    Så se mig som den

That's not a good translation. There's several problems with it, including "For the war, it can", and "So see me as it", and "Father and son never coming home". It might actually be a better translation than the subtitles on the official video on youtube. But that one is horrendous. This one isn't good, but it might be better.

Conscripted 1989, served a year in the Swedish Army (Infantry) in a *special* unit. Did finals with I1 (Swedish Life Guards), tasked with protecting Stockholm and Mälardalen. (Pitch for Sabatons "Livgardet")
Years later I had the privilege of visiting the officers mess at I1. And there where all the banners. Every single battle that the Life Guard had won. And they where a lot...
30 years later I'm still willing to put my aged body on the line for the love of my homeland and my fellow swedes.

What I remember about the Thirty Years War is that the Swedes played a decisive role, providing more soldiers to fight for Protestant religious freedom (from the Inquisition and mass executions of Protestants, which was how the Catholic powers were trying to re-impose uniformity) than anyone else, and that most of those men never came home.

Thank you thank you for reacting to this song. Yes it is about the 30-years war. The bloodiest war in history, of coz more people died in WWII but I mean in comparison to the population. A lot of soldiers died but the civilians did take the biggest hits. During WWII the population in Europe declined with about 6%, during this war the population declined with somewhere between 20-35%. The war was in Europe but it actually spread to the colonies both in Africa and America. A “fun” fact is that during this war the Swedish King Gustavus Adolfo decided that the publicity toward the swedish army was so bad due to all the things they did to the civilians so he decided that a man called Grothius should make rules of engagement. That is actually the world first rules of war that was written down and is the first step to all the conventions we have today. The song is about a man that goes to war as a kind.. and if he comes home again he would have lived a lifetime in war.
Once again thanx for this reaction.

More common than you'd think really, but Metalheads just aren't that "push-y"" about it. It's not about religion or politics or anything of the sort... it's about great music \m/ (and in this case: war stories most people don't know about. AND great music!)

The Thirty Years' War - Sweden becomes a great power
It was during the Thirty Years' War that Sweden became a great power in Europe. The war consisted of a series of interrelated conflicts with varying backgrounds. Religion is often mentioned as a contributing ideological cause to the war because the combatants were mainly Catholics on the one hand and Protestants on the other. On the Catholic side stood mainly the powerful German-Roman Empire, while the Protestant side was dominated by Sweden which in the end became the great winner of the conflict. At the Peace of Westphalia in 1648, Sweden's newfound position as a great power in northern Europe was confirmed... THANKS FROM SWEDEN

okay so i can't really be the only one that really what these two to listen to the song about the swiss guard from the Sabaton song the Last stand
i mean i remember Vin's reaction to the holy aspect of Carolus Rex. So a song about the brave men that died to protect the pope must be right up their ally.
I love that song and i'am an atheist but it have such power behind it that i can't help but scream along when Joakim Brodén goes IN THE NAME OF GOOOOOOOD

The crowd on the platforms is animated, srry to break it to you sabaton-fans.
Greenscreen and taken from another concert, there is no motion there, enhanced volume from the crowd on the ground, you know the rest.
