Manly tears are meaningful. In this world, many tears are shed over trite, petty, meaningless things--tears of frustration, angst, and selfish desires not met.
But true manly tears are shed over something that matters--lives lost in conflict, the death of ideals and nations, loss of family and friends. These are things that are worthy of tears. And a man is no less of a man for grieving over such things.

Saw Sabaton for the first time at a small venue in Norway. I was right up at the front, three of us saw the setlist and knew this song was coming up. We started singing before they introduced it. The whole crowd chanted in and we sang the first verste and chorus before the band started playing 😂 The guys just stood there chilling shaking their heads 😅 Last year was my 10th time seeing them Live, and I will be at every single show nearby for the rest of my lifetime
The tears you have, we’ve all shared, peace be with you brother!

Here's my translation that also goes well with the melody. Let me know what you think.
I turn around to see my homestead fade away
I wish I could have stayed there, just another day
Not yet a man, though called to arms to do my part
Will I see my home again, I wish with all my heart
With kinsmen from my village I went out to war
    In a world of flames
‘Cause war surely can, devastate a man
I give my life, for my motherland
    But who’s missing me?
    So see me as them
    the husband and friend
the father and son, who’s never seen again
    But who mourns over me?
Went out to war for Sweden, baptized in blood
No gallantry awaits us, dying in the mud
In fields where friends has fallen, there’ll be no songs
Our fate once more we challenge, and marching on
    Far away from home
(To be baptized and die in war)
    In a world of flames
‘Cause war surely can, devastate a man
I give my life, for my motherland
    But who’s missing me?
    So see me as them
    the husband and friend
the father and son, who’s never seen again
    But who mourns over me?
And when my time is finally here
    Who’ll sing my song?
    They’re fighting on
I hope to die without much fear
I fall asleep, and fade away
    And never wake up
‘Cause war surely can, devastate a man
I give my life, for my motherland
    But who’s missing me?
    So see me as them
    the husband and friend

Great reaction whether you are a Viking or not, you are still a human being and that is what Sabaton is all about, the human experience of great event by those long forgotten to time and history. This is one of their best songs and is gut wrenching. As a vet who fought this song taps the absolute emotion of war for those that fight it and those left home to maybe never know what happened to their loved ones. It maybe about the 30 year war in Europe (1618-1648) but it is about each and every conflict that came before it and sadly after it and those who were caught up in it. Well done sir, a true honest reaction to a truly brutal and honest lesson in war and it's impact on those that are part of it. " Only the dead have seen the end of WAR " (Plato)

    • @VikingReacts
      @VikingReacts  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

In this regard...war never changes. The means by which we fight may change but the result is the same. Loss of life, traumatized soldiers, family members dealing with death or their loved ones changed forever. Uncertainty of not knowing if you'll ever see your partner/father/mother/son/daughter ever again. It eats at everybody. I love the Plato quote....it is absolutely true.

    @GrandmasGotGraceLW ปีที่แล้ว +2

Oh, my goodness! I've heard some of their songs, but never this one. WOW!!! No wonder Dan Vasc has chosen to do some of their music. He's all about these same sorts of things. I think it's very interesting that you did this reaction two years back, and now there' he is, knocking at your doorstep, so to speak.
My father was a product of two Polish parents, who gathered up their children and left Europe to move to the United States. Daddy was born here in the U.S., as were all but the oldest child, who traveled here with Grandma and Grandpa. Dad was the youngest of the Minish group of children. After his father passed away, Grandma remarried--to another Pole--and became Mrs. Shisnia. They added seven more children to the troops during their years together, before he, too, passed away. Altogether, she had 13 living children. Two others died shortly after birth, and then the oldest son of the Minish clan died as a soldier during World War 2. My dad went to war then, also--at barely 18 (though I think he was not QUITE 18, from what he told me in later years). He was in the mechanized & medical infantry that followed General Patton's troops everywhere they went.
After the war ended, Dad was still alive, but he fought (what we would now described as) PTSD all the rest of his life. He was a gentle, loving man, and everyone who knew him where we lived in Old Valdez, Alaska after we moved there when I was only two years old, respected him and loved him back. Unfortunately, he would often get into arguments with (let's say) non-conservative people, while he was (sigh) drinking and playing pool in the local bars.
Poor Mom had to deal with him being brought home dripping blood, with more than once a smashed in nose and battered cheekbones. He survived all of that, and when she finally "left him" for several months, bringing us kids down to South Dakota to her parents' home, when I was 12 and in the 5th grade, he finally got himself sober and swore to her that he would never drink again or come home being carried in half dead. We went back up to Valdez with him, and he kept his promise, but he still smoked, and all the years of both smoking and drinking took over his heart and lungs, and he passed at age 54--looking more like he was somewhere around 80.
I'll never forget all of the people in our beautiful little town (brand new after the 1964 earthquake) who came to the funeral, and how many bags and bags and bags of heartfelt cards my mom received. They all said, over and over and over again, how much my dad meant to them, and how he would go out in the middle of the night--no matter what--when someone (before we got phones there, even) would come to the house, bang on our door, and ask for Daddy's help to thaw frozen pipes, unplug fireplace chimneys, run sick people to the doctor's office, and when we HAD no doctor (which was quite often while I was growing up) he would administer what medical aid he could, because of what he had learned while at war, and he would even deliver babies when necessary, because he had learned to be able to do THAT, also, while in service under Patton.
He also was ALWAYS, until his death, the leader of our Valdez branch of the VFW (Veterans of Foreign Wars). It was through THEM, that we eventually were able to get all of his Army medals and commendation papers (a LOT of both), that my sister now has stored away in her home. My mom had actually thought he was just "telling stories" when he told of the battles he had been in, etc. Once Cindi and I got hold of the actual information from the Army, Mom cried for days. She kept saying, "I always thought he was just making it all up!" It broke her heart that she had accused him of lying--simply because she didn't understand anything ABOUT war, except that she and her sisters helped with what they could, at home in the U.S., while their husbands (Mom's and her older sister's) were away at war. The youngest sister didn't marry until many years later, and her first husband never had to go to war, but he died early, also.
Plus, my own ex-husband is a Viet Nam veteran, who has suffered all of the junk thrown at him and his fellow veterans from THAT time of service. He also came home with many medals, and almost died rescuing his men from the ATV that was in his charge. He ended up with a heavy load of shrapnel at the top of his spinal column, that almost killed him years later. PLUS he had been exposed to Agent Orange, and THAT later affected my two youngest of my first four children. Like my dad, Jim also started drinking heavily, and though I don't believe he does any longer, he has suffered many consequences from that. Plus he just up and left me and his four children (all under the age of 12 at the time), and quickly married the other woman he had found. The kids have all made their peace with him, but it's still been hard on them all to have had to fight all the problems that came from him being at war during their early lives.
So when I look at this video and see all of the people being of one accord with these men singing about other men (possibly even themselves, or at least their own fathers and uncles, etc.), I feel very proud of them all, and wish I could have been there to lend my own support! Obviously, as you can probably tell, this has made quite an impression on me.
I totally love your reaction. I wish I'd seen it two years ago, and I am quite thankful that Dan Vasc (who spent time in the Brazilian army, and who tells the story of the Brazilian "Smoking Snakes" (have you seen/heard that one?) himself continues to fight and sing for FREEDOM. I also great appreciate people like you who RECOGNIZE that spirit in people. Don't ever let go of your responses to these types of things. It's very powerful.
    Thank you.

Something interesting about this song, which you may or may not know already: it belongs to the album "Carolus Rex" (2012), which narrates the rise and fall of Sweden's "Great Power era" (Swedish "Stormaktstiden") in the 17th and early 18th centuries. The band recorded two versions of that album, one in Swedish and one in English.
This song in the English version, "A Lifetime At War", focuses on the widespread destruction and devastation left behind by the Thirty Years War (1618-1648) (which essentially started as a conflict between Catholics and Protestants, "two ways to view the world, so similar at times", in the Holy Roman Empire before pretty much every major power of the time decided they were missing out on the fun and intervened), with millions of people dead, because of "religion and greed".
Meanwhile, as you saw yourself, the Swedish version focuses on the journey of one specific soldier from Sweden who goes to fight in the war, faces the harsh reality of war, and wonders if anyone would even miss him if he were to die what he's now realised is a worthless death.
I've always loved the difference between those two versions, how one centers on the big picture, while the other one is more grounded by looking through the eyes of the average soldier. In particular, the Swedish version is easily my favourite Sabaton song because of how utterly powerful its anti-war message is. Too often we tend to minimize, or forget, the human cost of war. Simply by the band's decision to tell this story through the eyes of an average soldier, we can relate to an experience most of us will never, well, experience (hopefully).
To close, I'd just like to give my respects to your father for his experiences... and for that beard. Never mind knowledge, I'd give my eye for a beard like that! (?)

Ah...another one :). So tell me... how is your proto-norse?
Again I explain. I am not claiming to be "a" Viking. My friends gave me my nickname "Viking" because of my huge interest in Norse mythology and the fact that I have a long beard (usually braided for comfort). If anything...it is a homage/tribute to Scandinavian heritage.
My video titles start with "Viking Reacts" and not with "A Viking Reacts". It is subtle...but for a reason.
Plus... I am actually learning Swedish.

the lyric is so perfect. you begin with "husband and friend" close relation that have no genes or whatevery you call it. Then you level up to Father and Son. And then "who never returns home" hits so bloody hard. Just thinking about how they are singing about sons, sons not returning from war gives me chills.

Welcome aboard! I am happy to hear that! But to be fair... how can one not like Sabaton when they do something like this! Even my wife liked it... and she does NOT like the music I listen to :P

Never forget that Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Germany etc share the same culture group since the viking age and long before that. This culture group is called Germanic. No wonder we share a lot of language similarities.

    *** Lyrics ***
I look around and see my home disappearing
My time där hemma now feels too short
Mere youth, hardly a man when duty called me
I don't know if I will see my home again
Among kinsmen from my city, I went out into battle
    And the world burned
    For the war, it can
    Förgöra a man
I give my life for my fatherland
    But who misses me?
    So see me as that
    A spouse, a friend
Father and son who never come home
    But who mourns me?
Went to war for Sweden, was baptized in blood
Out there, death awaits, not heroism
In fält där fränder faller, no song is heard
    Utmanar våra öden, once again

Swede here, personally never enjoyed power metal. Its not for me, i tend to like louder high tempo stuff. But this song never stops to make me shed some tears.

That was one of the coolest concerts i've ever been too, and in the start when everybody started to sing! That feeling was unexplainable. :D

My stepfather had gotten the family tickets to one of their shows and since he had a career as a guard in the city they were going to (Gothenburg) and knew pretty much everyone on that scene he'd have been able to get us backstage aswell but that damn virus happened and the tour was cancelled. the disappointment was immeasurable, went around the whole day morose after the news of it being cancelled broke

dont even particularly like concerts ngl but I had seen the vids of theirs and I do love their music (not a dry eye in sight when this song comes on) so going to a sabaton one would probably been pretty nice, one of the few artists I actually keep track of when their appearances are so that I might go listen to em live

I love your reactions, they are si heartfelt and real, your expressions mirror precisely what I'm feeling.Your tears are real and so human. It takes a very powerful performance if an evenly powerful song, to reduce the listener to tears. My tears are the golden standard of who is worthy of my time to listen to. Your tears spoke to my heart andvsaid much more tha the yranslation. Thank you for that experience. You've got me hooked my friend. And Sabaton are amazing. I hooe they do a concert in Athens, I would brave. all the hurdles of going with my wheelchair to see them, vandcwould even vilunteer to seeve as their interpreter while here, I imagine that they do speak English. I an only willing to do this for Dan Vasc and Sabaton. As for you, stay real and alliw your inner emotions to flow freely Thank you for this experience.

Danish here. i know this song and lyrics in swedish by heart. The song is so amazing and beautiful. Denmark and Sweden have been to war with eachother for about 36 times or so. Cheers for peace my Swedish brothers and sisters. Heja Sverige! :)
