What I love most about this version it was prior to Flo and Mary's mic being lowered ... Flo is belting out Mary is crooning and of course Diana is excellent ... adds up to one great harmony and sound... Perfect!!
You want to know why this song is still great? Play it for a 2 or 3 year old who has NEVER heard it and watch their reaction. It's honest. That's how you know a song stands the test of time.
That doesn't really mean anything, you can put a ton of good artist on and 2 or 3 year old will react. It's more of the emotions behind the voice and how the beat entices a since of urgency to stop something before it happens. Diana and her voice behind two other opposing voices. Which I think it's stupid that they started to lower the mic for the other girls later on. That one dynamic add so much more to the song.
Pues como estas rolas las oía cuando yo trabajaba en el fil pero esto son para al que le guste por qué estoy pasando una depresion y esto me distray para no pensar en eso
There are a lot of Supremes videos on TH-cam for us to enjoy and remember. One thing I didn't realize at the time was how many of their appearances were sung live. That just doesn't happen... The girls were not afraid of hanging it out there. Isn't it cool to hear the harmony even if the volume level isn't really balanced with Diana's lead? Florence and Mary were not just back-ups. You can understand Flo's frustration about, and respect Mary's willingness to subordinate herself to Diana.
Sweet, beautiful and talented ladies, from the golden era of Motown and R&R. Glad I was a teenager then and not now. How long ago and far away it all seems.
I love the " Supremes" my brother use to call me Diana ....I use to sing all their songs and had a lot of fun dancing to them.....Good days.....wonderful memories "Motown Sounds " We'll always love you,,,
Remembering Grandma! Loved listening to this in her Volvo! She would come get me early from school to get ice cream….She would pop this little tune in. Made it special!
Maybe the most popular song of Supremes for Spanish audience. There is everywhere they are magic, glamour, style, soul, charming, beauty, sorrrow, love... Eternas Supremes!!! Kisses from Span
I always find it fascinating that the Supremes moved so little compared to the other Motown acts. They made a art form out of small gestures, subtle expressions and poise.
Class is a category by itself. The Supremes made fashion a statement. No need to shake your bottom and show midriffs all the time; can't sweat 💦 too much: Make up and eye 👁️👁️ lashes; remember few places had air conditioning. ❤manual vs. technology 😅. Thanks for sharing 🙏🏽❤.
Stop! *puts hand out* in the name of love, before you break my heart! :) I love this song. I'm 29 and enjoy The Supremes among other older music. My third grade class used to irritate the bus driver by singing the "Stop! In the name of love, before you break my heart." part of the song and Shari Lewis's This is the Song that Never Ends. Imagine a bunch of 8 year olds singing these 2 songs repeatedly both to AND from school and field trips lol.
How things changed. Before, popular singers presented themselves elegantly dressed and adorned, and with beautiful hairstyles. They sang with the natural instrument of their own voice, with their own talent. And not only did they sing, they also had a beautiful choreography, and it must be added that they sang with very well pronounced language. Very different from the vulgarity that abounds today.
It's impossible to think of this great song without also remembering the Stop gesture which was arguably their most famous bit of choreography. Thanks so much for posting this.
i have probably listened to this song more than any other song ever and no matter how many times i hear it i never get sick of it. One of the finest, most perfect pop records ever made
Love it. It is so refreshing to see live performances from this era that are not lip synced. That's very rare. If I wanted to hear the studio version, id just buy the album. Hearing them actually sing it live makes it so much more enjoyable.
A big reason why Diana Ross stood out from other black female singers of this era like Aretha Franklin, Tina Turner, Gladys Knight, Patti LaBelle, Martha Reeves etc was because her sound was distinctly different. She wasn't a soulful belter with a big range. Her voice was light and smooth and as such it gave her a crossover appeal with white audiences that many of her contemporaries didn't have. It's no surprise why "The Supremes" enjoyed the level of success that they did. Berry Gordy knew this and took full advantage of the situation by having her become the lead singer and the group scored a number of top charting hits during the 60's. That isn't to say he could have done a better job utilizing the talents of Mary Wilson and the late Florence Ballard instead of relegating them to backups and harmonies, but I suppose he didn't want to tamper with a winning formula which is what he had.
Magic. Beautiful song. Beautiful women. Beautiful gowns. Such a delight to look back to a day and age when women knew how to look elegant and attractive without taking all their clothes off.
The charismatic expressions of the marvelous ladies of soul will be unmatched forever! Diana's facial expressions while singing, actuate the lyrics with a type of intimate sensation with each word sang!
These 3 project reared angels were not just born with talent but the class that any High Brow click would envy and the sense to graduate school before signing with Berry. Love ya always D, Mary and miss ya Flo
Excellent Supremes performance. This is the image the world fell in love with. Yes, the voice was Diana's but the image of the three girls on TV and on stage was what made them legendary... In my book all three Supremes get equal credit.
Wirklich, respekt , " lucyhuto " . Schon fast1390000 Klicks ! Respekt !!!
When I was putting together songs for a playlist "Divas" on my channels, I was tempted to put this version on the list. In the end, I opted for a later one in colour. However, this one is so sweet, as it shows how young they were and how pure their music was. All three of them were pretty young ladies, and they were all quite talented. Of course, Diana Ross had what it took to be a superstar, but how many singers ever have that? It's wonderful to see them here when things were still good.
Thank you Glee for making me interested in this song enough to look it up on the net. I don't think I would have seen and heard these ladies otherwise, and that would be just sad. :)
On this day in 1965 {February 24th} the Supremes performed "Stop! In the Name of Love" on the ABC-TV program 'Shindig!'... At the time the song was at #41 on Billboard's Hot Top 100 chart; and four weeks later on March 21st it peaked at #1 {for 2 weeks} and spent 12 weeks on the Top 100... Just over six years later on March 28th, 1971 Margie Joseph's covered version of the song entered the Top 100 at #97, the following week it was still at #97, and then on its third and final week on the chart it peaked at #96...
sauquoit13456 - Stop in the name of you're making me feel so old! Ha.. j/kSeriously, I know it was in my early teens, but when I here 50 years have gone by. It really seems so long ago.. Wow! I live in the Detroit area. We were always so proud of them and all the Motown Singers. We all loved Motown here and if you didn't we sent you to Ohio... j/k again.
Janice Cappell Thanks for the reply; the Supremes were a great group... On June 6th, 1991 my wife & I attended a Diana Ross concert at the Stanley Theater in Utica, NY; and she put on a super show... During the show she noticed a young male fan in the audience holding a bunch of her & the Supremes albums; she called him on stage and signed each one, while the audience applauded... It was a nice touch from a super lady... Thanks again...
Wow it is hard to believe it only spent 2 weeks at #1. When I was a kid with my transistor radio listening to WABC (AM) radio out of New York City it seemed like it was played constantly and happily to for we all loved it ...
Dear Miguelina, I was touched very much by your comment. I also miss the purity and innocence we had in the music business in the past. The Supremes are one of my favorite music groups. At the moment I collected all my personal top of the pops - then I found them again and still love them
On this day in 1965 {February 14th} "Stop! In The Name of Love" by the Supremes entered Billboard's Hot Top 100 chart at position #80; and on March 21st it peaked at #1 {for 2 weeks} and spent 12 weeks on the Top 100... It reached #2 on Billboard's R&B Singles chart... Was the fourth in a string of five straight #1 records by the trio; started with "Where Did Our Love Go" {2 weeks}, "Baby Love" {4 weeks}, "Come See About Me" {2 weeks}, this one, and finally "Back In My Arms Again" {1 week}... "Nothing But Heartaches" broke the string; it peaked at #11; but the girls bounced back with their next release, "I Hear A Symphony", which reached #1 {for 2 weeks}... R.I.P. Florence Ballard {1943 - 1976}...
ya i know now all the songs are about drugs sex and girls .....like gimme a break whatever happened to writing good ole fashion songs about life and romance and how to be a good well rounded individual ....ugh
There is something magical about this group, especially in this clip. It is so classy, elegant and mysterious. For one moment you could hear, smell, feel the 60s. There is something about Diana Ross, you just keep looking at her, her voice represents the mid-60s. What a difference in the way women&men in clips are behaving nowadays, bad langguage, sexual intimidation, pornographic content.
I love this song!!! So beautiful!! i would of loved to be back in those days for a week! it would be fun!!! Oh yeah isn't the movie DreamGirls based on the Supremes?
Real voices. Real harmony. No screaming and shouting. This music and it is lovely.
The same concept rap and hip hop artists use, love being tested, and these girls did it without any of the vulgarity. Respect.
The Supremes, so elegant and classy, I miss their beautiful talent..
if flo was having problems d and m should have helped her!
What I love most about this version it was prior to Flo and Mary's mic being lowered ... Flo is belting out Mary is crooning and of course Diana is excellent ... adds up to one great harmony and sound... Perfect!!
It almost sounds like they're singing the wrong lyrics. I like it except for the first "Baby" should be quieter as there's too much going on lyrically
They lost that when Flo left, Cindy had her moments, but the sound was not the same.
You want to know why this song is still great? Play it for a 2 or 3 year old who has NEVER heard it and watch their reaction. It's honest. That's how you know a song stands the test of time.

Glad I was a teenager then and not now. How long ago and far away it all seems.
my god, diana is just so ridiculously beautiful, and that voice just complements her beauty perfectly
now 69. Grew up in the country. Learned to dance to the beat of MoTown. We all loved the Supremes!
I'm 17 and I love this. I wish music like this would come back. When people actually sang and didn't need all that autotune crap...
How does it feel being 30 now?
My mom loved this song rip mom july 20,2011 she passed away
