      Your parents taught you well. Just as the Beatles said, they listened to the music 🎶 their dad's listened to in the great war, World War II. Which was Black singers. That is why I liked the Beatles. They gave credit where it was due! Thank you, and your parents, who did the same for you!

      Same here. 75 and grew up with these guys. I lived in the burbs of Detroit (Redford Township) However back in 2000 I met up with Bernie Turnbull of the Reflections (Just like Romeo and Juliet). His day job away from weekend singing gigs was where I worked as a Tech and Administrator. I recognized him right away and we became friends. Sadly Bernie died in 2003 of bone cancer. He fell and injured his arm and thats how they found it. I went to his funeral and was amazed at how many from Motown and other labels showed up in full costume to pay last respects. Bernie was a good man.

    I grew up in Canada, across the border from Detroit. I remember visiting my family in Detroit as a young child and seeing the whites only signs. I didn't understand what they meant, and even after my aunt explained it, I still didn't understand it. I was probably naive, but my Canadian Baptist Sunday School lessons taught me that all humans were brothers and sisters, eqal in the eyes of God. Then, as a teenager who admired many black musicians, I still didn't understand the bigotry. I read about how black musicians were treated badly when touring and performing, in terms of transportation, accomodations, and in various other ways. I credit the awareness created by the music and musicians of that era with reinforcing my earlier Sunday School lessons. Music truly is a uniter and a gift to everyone.

      I don’t think the black groups were segregated in the UK. They could go and stay where they liked. Such lasting music and I love the way they were choreographed. They had an etiquette woman in Motown who taught them how to be ‘ladies’ in interviews. Fabulous people.

      Aren't you glad you're Canadian and perfect??

    • @macgrad1
      @macgrad1 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      @@jackbailey7037 , I never said that I or most Canadians are perfect; far from it. I only meant that as a teenager in the 1960s, it bothered me to see discrimination and that from both a religious and secular humanist perspective, I thought it was wrong. I also meant that the music I listened to in the late 1950s, and the 1960s and 1970s, strongly influenced my views on human rights and the brotherhood of all people. For me and my fellow teenagers at the time, how could we idolise so many Black musicians and not be affected by seeing them mistreated for the colour of their skin. Believing that we are all equal and that it’s wrong to discriminate doesn’t mean that one is perfect in every way. I have a lot of faults but I believe that music can unite people and I still believe that it’s wrong to discriminate against others. As for the fact that I’m Canadian, remember that it was white American young people who also gave up their lives in the fight for civil rights. Obviously, not all Americans were bigots and I never meant to say that they were. 🎼🎶☮️🎶🎼

    • @macgrad1
      @macgrad1 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@irismarshall6881 , In the 1960s, an Agatha Christie mystery novel had black and white young people sharing a flat and one of the characters was American. The characters briefly discussed discrimination and they contrasted the differences in bigotry between the United States and England. In England, there were definitely bigots but people of different colours ate in the same restaurants, shared buses and train cars, stayed in the same hotels and apartment buildings, and resided in the same neighbourhoods, shared flats as roommates, attended the same schools legally intermarried, and worked in the same workplaces. The racism was definitely there but it was different from the American Jim Crow style of bigotry.
      Motown music was fantastic. My husband and I visited the Motown Museum in the 1990s. It was amazing seeing where the magical music was created. We were able to purchase lovely studio photos of some of our favourite singers. Ahh…Levi Stubbs…be still my beating heart. My husband had a huge crush on Tammi Terrell.

Examples : Jackson Brown gets up there and sings with his guitar and his band... he doesn't have any extracurricular nonsense going on. He just gets up there and it's just fabulous. Been to MANY Moody Blues Concerts .. same thing. They don't need ed all that. Boz Skaggs. BobSeeger/ S.B.B. ... too many to list. They all just " do what they do ", it's crazy to me that it needs to be "A Show " ...I'm there for the Music. Plain and simple.

      @@mf7482 🤷 Exactly...and it's no way to help that music leave a positive, lasting impression....The youth of the Melinium are for the most part STARVED when it comes to the "ARTS" ..360 degrees.

      This music should have its own Competition Show...They can call it..."Mimicking"... "Mimickerey"... Or "The Mimickers". Makes Sense because 90% of the time the performers Suffer from DISCONNECT.

    Most of the Motown singers actually came from Detroit (Motown). Diana Ross, Michael Jackson and the Jackson 5, Stevie Wonder, Gladys Knight, Marvin Gaye, Smokey Robinson, and many others.

    Omg the RONNETTES, Phil Spector, Righteous Brothers, the Animals, the wall of sound / telling ya this was an era of innoncence, joy, musical genius and dance ability … I don’t care how old it makes one seem it was a magical era long gone by, true musicality, never to come back

    This era gave us so much pure talent. Not just the groups but Dusty Springfield. Linda Rhonstadt. Judith Durham. So many more.
