What ashoka did in Kalinga was a battle, on a battlefield where soldiers pledge to fight till last breath. On the contrary, Aurangzeb did mass killings, not on the battlefield but to the innocent people.
Ashoka always obeyed the *kshatriya laws of war* , whereas any islamic invader didn't follow any of the *war rules* and mostly cheated and killed people outside the battlefield.

Though Ashoka was nothing in front of Aurangzeb(in terms of persecuting other religions), still Ashoka wasn't a saint either. Ashoka was very cruel and wiped out the entire sect called Ajivikas. Ashoka is often called the greatest of all Mauryan Kings, which i do not agree with, the greatest Mauryan King was Chandragupt Maurya and Bindusara(he is the most under rated king).

Samrat ChandraGupta Maurya , Samrat Ashoka, samrat Samudra Gupta fought to reunite Bharat under one single Empire to make Bharat a Great , A superpower. So that no other foreign power can do invasion into india.
Just look at our history whenever india was fragmented under many small kingdoms india got invade.
But when Bharat was unite under one single Empire like " The Great Mauryan Empire ", under "Gupta Empire " under the rein of Emperor Ashoka, Emperor ChandraGupta, Emperor Samudra Gupta no foreign invaders ever dared to attack india.
We made Alexander to lose the war against india , because we had United Bharat under one single Empire ( The Mauryan Empire) , if India would have remained fragmented with different kingdoms Alexander would have invade india.
We stopped the scythians , huns , Sakas , Greeks and many other invaders just because we united Bharat under one single Empire.
Samrat Vikramaditya single handedly destroyed sakas because our Bharat was not Fragmented under many kingdoms.

Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj literally saved Maratha empire from tyrant Aurangzeb. Aurangzeb’s army was 5 lakh+ and Maratha total army was like 60-70 thousand. Still Aurangzeb failed. After unfortunate tortures death(He accepted death instead of Islam). Marathas had no King for 27 years. There was only one queen Ie Tara Rani. Remember one thing Bloodlines and hereditary doesn't matter , what matters is culture and civilization.
Aurangazeb was neither of Indian Ancestry, neither was of indian culture and civilization. Aurangazeb went on to wipe out indian culture and civilization. And imposed a foreign, barbaric religion upon Indians.
Emperor Ashoka promoted Indian culture and civilization, Buddhism is an indian culture and civilization. Buddhism is our culture not a foreign culture.
Emperor Kaniskha The Great was not of Indian Origin, but he embraced Indian culture and civilization and worked for India's interest and promoted indian culture and civilization, because of him today, China, Korea, Mongolia, Japan has Buddhism as their Official culture.
      So culture and civilization matters.
Aurangazeb was neither following indian culture or civilization

The main thing is Ashoka is not praised for his cruelty, the way he turned his life and actually followed dharma and stopped his cruelty, is what makes him great. Aurangzeb was clearly a criminal minded guy, and there is no way one can admire him, even the Mughal rule was handed to him already set up across North India. Ashoka ended his life having learnt that killings of thousands does not make an emperor great, but taking care of people does. So he stopped his blind inclination towards extending boundaries and this was something that actually made him a great person and a great ruler

  • @SKSingh-pd4pk

Ashoka was surely great!! but I think he overrated! (all thanks to nehru)
Chandragupta Maurya & chanakya deserve more appreciation than him, they started from 0 & made a mighty empire
whereas ashoka got everything directly in hand & also:
Ashoka very well followed chanakya neeti during his reign but like 2 years before the kalinga war he became influenced by buddhism or some sources say it was for minority appeasement like what congress does now & after the war, he left doing invasions.... now this is where the problem arise
he started making his new laws to give buddhists privilege & ignored chankya neetis + arthashastra which was for goodness of empire, this is where everything goes wrong.... his successors were even more dumb they were brutally brainwashed by buddhist monks
all thanks to Pushyamitra Shunga who killed weak king brihadrath + revived sanatan dharma again (real one)
& all also saved india from greek invasions

Ashoka is respected for his legacy. His legacy was Buddhism's rise and overall beginning of Classical Indian Civilization. He was very brutal but why do you expect Rāma like king? All great emperors of past who united and laid foundations of Civilizations were brutal. Genghis Khan, Alexander, Ashoka, Qin shi Huangdi, Julius Caesar. Don't look at them from moral perspective. Moreover, please understand Emperors like Chhatrapati Shivājī are rare happenings. So are Maharana Pratap and Sultan Ayyubi and First Caliphs in particular the Rashiduns. If you look towards kings of past with this much idealism, you will not read even a per cent of history. Even Rajendra Chola was a brutal king then and you should not respect them. Cholas should not be respected at all if you look at history morally. They destroyed Anuradhapura, almost decimated Buddhism in Sri Lanka, invaded Southeast Asia, had brutal taxation methods. Remember them via legacies and not actions. And in that case, Ashoka is, along with previous two rulers, greatest Emperors of India. Being a Bihari, they are our pride and proof of our civilisational heritage and importance.

Samrat Ashok was a great emperor. The only fault I see in him, is the spread of Buddhism. Although Ashoka diligently followed Kshatriyatva even after converting to Buddhism, but the monks and his descendants took undue advantage of the Buddhist ahimsa principles, and dropped their warriorhood.
Samrat Brihadratha is the example. Had Samrat Pushyamitra Shunga not taken over, Greek invasion was inevitable.
I don't hate Samrat Ashok, and we can't blame him for the fault of his descendants, but, he deserves blame for spreading Buddhism.

We stopped the scythians , huns , Sakas , Greeks and many other invaders just because we united Bharat under one single Empire.
Samrat Vikramaditya single handedly destroyed sakas because our Bharat was not Fragmented under many kingdoms.

In the end his whole empire was narrowed down. "And to correct you chanakya would have died again after seeing the acts of your so called #greatashoka ".
