  • Ashoka the Great, probably the one Indian king we all have studied in schools, How great he was, How he planted trees, How he converted to Buddhism after witnessing the cruelty of Kalinga war.
What if I tell you it’s all A BIG LIE?
The evidence Ashoka’s own inscriptions tell a completely different story. I think it’s time to dig out the facts and counter the lies we have been told for generations.
The story we have been told is Ashoka the great Emperor invaded a tiny kingdom Kalinga. But the people of Kalinga were not ready to surrender either. So the Kalinga war happened which resulted in the death of 1,00,000 people which is a huge number of population 2000 years back. So Ashoka felt really guilty and converted to Buddhism and practiced nonviolence for the rest of his life.
This is the story we have been told for years.
This is the story which is still being taught in schools.
We even have movies based on the story.
But how far it is TRUE?
It’s high time we uncover the actual story of Ashoka based on the inscriptions and evidence we have instead of making a fake story.

I am a Theravada Buddhist from Sri Lanka.
According to Sri Lankan books, he became a Buddhist after the Kalinga War.
He propagated Buddhism, so he was called Dharmashoka.
    Ashoka
    Chandashoka
    Dharmashoka ....
It is mentioned in the books that Ashoka did not wars after becoming a Buddhist.
    I'm not saying I'm 100% right. ..
I have little knowledge of Indian historical sources.
Which Indian source mentions that Ashoka fought wars after the Kalinga war.........................
Mahindra Thero, the son of Emperor Ashoka, brought Buddhism to our country.
In ancient times, the people of Sri Lanka called India as Jambudhveepa.
According to our books, Emperor Ashoka built 84000 Buddhist temples all over Jambudhveepa.
Buddhism was given to many Buddhist countries in the world
    Emperor Ashoka.
He is a hero to Theravada Buddhists.

Why did he have to destroy the Kalinga (BlackLinga) empire? Just to promote Buddhism and appease Bhikkus, He tried to destroy the Linga worship religion which is from Kalinga and Telinga (Trilinga) Desam. The Kalingas were a very rich empire with rich trade history with South East Asia for thousands of years. Any Indonesian and Malaysian always refer to dark or Indian-looking people as Keling. After the Kamboja/Saka/Aryan invasion into India everything changed. The Kalingas fleed to Southeast Asia or Bangladesh, some even migrated to the Hinterlands or South India to save themselves. You see alot of Shaivite temples in the south and also as far as Champa (Vietnam) as they brought the Linga culture with them. Every King was always power-hungry.@@animeworldixr5951

Hello ..I'm a srilankan and as you all know buddhism is the religion of majority here. Buddist monk called "Mahinda" The son of Ashoka the great came here and established buddhism as a result of 3rd 'dharma sangayana' which was conducted by king Ashoka. And dear Keerthi I think it's not that much fair to judge a great king by some information you collected from various types of resources. There could be so much untold , unwritten stories in history that you probably can't explain in a couple of minute youtube video. It's almost been 2000 years do you think people who had been lived through all those years didn't notice a single thing you say? Don't know whether stories we've been told true or a lie but forever greatfull for bringing buddhism here for the sake of politics or with the thought of spreading buddhism.
ps. Be aware before beliving everything that random youtube historians say. This video is filled with lack of information and biased (why I say it's biased ; I've seen hefty amount of people's hate towards king Ashoka for the fact that he converted in to a buddhist. And most of them are hindu people. Can't help with that. Can't change history.Pleas don't hate someone just because they don't belong to the same religion as yours.) I'm amazed of amount of people that compliment these kind of videos without any kind of research . Hope people will do more quality contents.

I'm a Buddhist nun from Srilanka and our great historical chronical Mahavamsa has a several chapters dedicated to Ashoka. And I believe most of the historical facts the world know by now are either taken from Ashokan rock edicts or from Mahavamsa. If there are other sources I think you should better mention them in your narrative. It is true that a king has always limitaitons in following parama ahinsa and an emperor is even less capable. However Ashoka contributed a lot for Buddhism by holding the third sangha council since Lord Buddha's passing away and it is as a result of that council that he sent missionaries to seven areas including Srilanka. By this time both his son and daughter had enetered the order pf sangha and Srilanka received both of them, first Maha Mahinda thero his son, along with Buddhism and then hos daughter Sanghamiththa theri with a sapling of the Bodhi tree under which Lord Buddha attained Buddhahood.
The countries which received Buddhism from Ashoka still remains Buddhist to this day so unlike the empire of Alexander the great which collapsed soon after his demise the dharma empire of Ashoka the great still remains well intact today. Making him quite close to a chakravarti raja mentioned in Buddhism. (But not completely).
    P. S - it's better if you include references to your information under the video description.

In the inscription of Emperor Ashoka, there is mention of his living brothers. You can read in inscription number five which is the inscription of Kalsi.

A Sri Lankan sinhalese here. Ashoka is revered by us as a great buddhist emperor.
There're asura and sura rulers in every faith; occasionally, a country cannot function without violence. It's not possible for a ruler to expand his empire, defend and propagate a faith without violence in those days. Do you believe that the medieval rulers who followed islam and christianity were devout? Did they propagate their faith with ahimsa? I don't think so.

There will be 2 earthquakes in Alaska ( 7.6 and 7.3) After that children will go missing. It will be Jesus who is coming with promised redemption! Our God has revealed all those details to his prophets right now and He is coming in promised redemption. But governments will say it was UFO. Now you have been told in advance, so do not be deceived.
Only God knows the future. Jesus loves you, accept him as your Saviour and be safe! We are in the last pages of the Bible now. What saves us is the faith that Jesus He bled and died on the cross, and he was resurrected three days later. His blood cleansed us from our sins so that we can stand in front of God blamelessly. So there isn't the slightest doubt that we have been deliberately fed a blatant lie for 76 years post independence!

The problem with Santani historians is that they are more of "Kathawachak" than historians. No inscription read here as a reference which is an integral part of credibility.
1.Ashoka was a lay budhist before Kalinga war. His father was an Aajeevak and Mauryans were also Buddhist Not Sanatani.
    2. Alexander Cunningham was the historian who discovered history of Ashoka. No Indian was aware of such a great emperor.
    3. The fact she's trying to say are based on a scripture Ashokawadana not an inscription.
If you read Ashokan inscription his teaching ideas prove him to be greatest emperor of all time. But for very obvious reasons since he was a Buddhist so these "Sanatanis" never like him and try to demean him in every possible way.
    4. Ashoka was fond of his brothers he made an artificial Hill called "Bhikuna" Pahar for him brother the remains are still there.
    5. He sent his daughter and Son for propagation of Dhamma in Srilanka without any violence he spread Dhamma every where such a great king he was.
    6. His rock inscriptions, Stupa are rich cultural heritage of India.
    7. Just imagine the Sanatanis who were not aware of the existence of great king are now writing fictional stories to prove that he was cruel king???
8 These Brahmins even called Ashokan pillar as " "Bheem ki Gada" how talented they are.???
The only talent they hv is to prove others evil and hijack the heritage of Buddha.

In the time of Ashoka, Hindus faced terrible oppression. Ashoka aimed to convert everyone to Buddhism, and many of our sacred texts were destroyed by Buddhists. They almost wiped out Hinduism from our land. But in Kalinga, people fought fiercely to keep their beliefs alive. The entire state resisted, even children joining the struggle to defend Hinduism.
Later, Sri Sri Adi Shankaracharya emerged, spreading Hinduism's message across the country once more. Against all odds, Hinduism rose again, reclaiming its place in our land.

I am not aware of all the edicts, but knowledge which I got till now is that although Ashoka had kept his sword but he was ready to take it whenever a threat approached. How can we expect a ruler to follow the path of non violence to complete extent ? Either he would have given up his kingdom like Buddha, only then we could imagine that all the violence which he did after convertiong to Buddhism was not ethical ? How can we forget a ruler has two religions, one which he follows personally and other which he has towards his subjects? It's relevant even now. Even if he would have completely discarded the violence, he would have been responsible for the fall of the empire, like Firoz Tughlaq? He is surrounded by both the sides. You will all never spare him.
Before blindly following anyone, just have fact check and form your own opinion. History is not that much easy and straight forward as you all are taking it.

The presentation of the life of Emperor Ashoka the Great seems highly biased and far removed from the historical facts. It is true that Ashoka had already converted to Buddhism few years before the Kalinga war but probably he did not practice it seriously in the sense of complete renunciation of violent means as an emperor. The real transformation in Ashoka came after the kalinga war and he actually started his journey on the path of the Dhamma since then. So where is the contradiction? His pilgrimage to the Buddhist holy places, patronage of the Dhamma and building of 84,000 votive Stupas spread all over the subcontinent bear testimony to his devotion to Buddhism post-kalinga war. That Buddhism in a short span of time spread far and wide in all directions from the land of its birth leading to its present status as a world religion shines as the glorious achievement of Emperor Ashoka. There is no evidence that Ashoka resorted to any violent means after Kalinga war as winning people's hearts through Dhamma was his stated goal rather than military conquest.
It seems that for some so called historians especially in present day India it is hard to digest the fact that the greatest emperor in their history had adopted Buddhism and had tried to establish Dhamma Rajya, a society based on the ideals of social equality and harmony.

Believe in what he has done for us with the full heart, confess your sins to him and pray, build a relation with him. Ask him to come into your heart. It is God's grace that saves you. It's nothing that you can do but what he has done for us. No works required. Call upon him as Your Lord and Saviour!(see also Bible, 1 Corinthians 15:1:6)

We all know winner writes the history. Here we heard from our ancestors that Ashoka only stopped the warWhen normal people joined the war with whatever weapon they had. When all men were either dead or captured. River Daya was red with blood. When the whole Royal Family was massacred but the people refused to lose and choose to die with respect because Ashoka was not a human he was a demon. When they saw old men and young boys fighting, they stopped.

Who did he want to rule over after killing the citizens? Truth is the level of cruelty that has happened inside india (whether by british or by kings such as ashoka) is on par with hitler's concentration camps. You wanna know the true history, then you’ll have to work hard on it. Until then, don’t doubt different outlooks of history. 🙏❤️

@@jinkigang No indian king had killed common people except ashoka. Ashoka was a terrorist and tyrant. Kalinga war wasn't a war between two armies. He massacred the common people of the region literally making their rivers red in blood. The only other ones who did similar were muslim invaders and british and hitler. If you want to idolize hitler or ashoka is your wish. By the way, no one is saying anything against buddhism, it is a peaceful religion and everyone respects buddhism. But ashoka was like hitler.

@@Jr.Champion Modi is from OBC caste. Whole of BJP has more leaders than khangress from non general backgrounds. Don't associate them with Sangha. if he was pro hindu, he would've freed temples from having their money taken by govt.
