  • A quick sound sample selection, all captured with the Sennheiser MKE 600. I mainly use mine to capture more directional sound outdoors and I like to team it up with my my Stereo Clippy Em272's to get a wider soundscape.

Nice. As a relative newbie to recording, the question of gear is always a big theme. So many folks online slam cheaper gear, but this sounds fine to me. I don't have a big budget, certainly not for $1000-$1500 shotguns. This sounded good for a more budget friendly option. So far I've only got a H1n, H6, Lom Usi Pro's, LOM Geofon, LOM ElektroUsi, but a decent budget shotgun would definitely be nice at some point and this is definitely on the list. Probably a Hydrophone first though. Thanks for the video Andy. Definitely helps.

I totally agree, I'm just working with what I've got and trying to get the best from it. After using/listening to the capture from omni-directional mics like the Lom's & Clippy's I notice a huge difference with a shotgun mic for directional sound. Instead of hearing everything it does let you focus in on a subject that are within roughly 15-25ft away.
You still hear everything but the focus is where you point it.
The only down sides are you need good wind protection and the off access sound is a bit different due to the interference tube.
      Thanks for your comment.

Thank you, I've been recording with my EM 272's in the Rode Blimp so I should hopefully have something uploaded in the next week.

Great video Andy, I am thinking of getting either the zoom f8n pro or the f6. I mostly shoot landscape video on farms and the roadside. I am looking for a audio kit to go with my Canon XF 605 camcorder. I have been using the H1N for awhile and I only want to buy 1 one more recorder. How did you decide on the F8n Pro or did you consider the F6 as well?

Hi Mike, I own the F8n which is the older model to the F8n pro. It only captures 24 bit files where as both the F6 and F8n pro can also capture 32 bit files which can saving a lot of worry around clipping your audio levels and setting your gain level correctly.
The F8n pro does cost a fair bit more than the F6 and i feel the biggest difference you get is the handling/interface.
Curtis Judd has great reviews of both recorders but i would point you towards the F8n pro if you want a great unit that could be your one time purchase.

Hope you find them worthwhile, I ended up with my F8n as it was too good a deal to ignore. I was looking on Gumtree for microphones and someone was selling their mint condition Sennheiser MKE600 and F8n. I felt the F8n was a bit overkill but like you was happy that it could be all i ever need, and i got the pair for the price of an F6.
      Thanks for your question👍
