  • I felt obligated to make this video after the recent developments of Eren Jeager and his incredible character arc in Attack on Titan. Like many, I initially had no interest in his character for the first half of the series, but he's recently propelled into one of, if not the most, interesting and morally questionable characters in the series.
    Inspired by the brilliant character breakdown from u/kemorsky on reddit, please check his post out: / manga_spoilers_charact...

    Attack on titan is going to go down in history. Especially if the author manges to give it a satisfying ending. I mean shit, this is not your average "I want to be the greatest hero!" Shonen manga. This is what going a above the genre looks like folks. This what a talented writer does. Great video man. Keep up the great work.

      Froggy Legs There is a lot of mistakes that could be easily fixed in the story though.
      but I swear AOT could be one of the few greatest stories of all time if these mistakes were fixed. for example sasha's death is stupid considering these characters had a great plot armour in much more dagerous situation where it would make much more sense if they died back then.
      I hate these small mistakes cuz without them the series is the best thing I've ever watched

    • @sleepwell2186
      @sleepwell2186 6 ปีที่แล้ว +55

      Dillon Jassmond
      no that's not a mistake. It's actually more realistic if anything, you sometimes survive by luck and next moment you die just like that that's how life is. Her death is better this way she died with people she loved because she was always very kind and happy girl she loved them and if she died from that titan it would be fucked up because she was alone. She was killed by a girl that she spared. It's kinda poetic. Also she is comic reliefe so with her death isayama wants to show how serious think become know when the comic reliefe is out of the picture. Sashas death can also be used as connies development so no if anything ths was good writting. He wanted to kill her in season 2 but than her voice actor cried so he decided to leave her alive for few more arcs. These are not mistakes lol you just need to look deeper in to authors mind. Sashas death was the best death he could have pulled of in this chapter because she is loved by fans but also unimportnat to the plot really. So her death was impactful but not the end of everything...

      @froggylegs1499 6 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      sleep well your right your right. I love breaking bad and even I can see its flaws but that does not stop it from being the amazing piece of art that it is. Some people think a few small mistakes stops something from being grand when it doesnt. While other people think there favorite show (like the current mha and bc fans) is flawless when it's not. AOT is phenomenal for so many reasons but for me it's mostly because it breaks shonen by adding other elements and genre in there. I love stories about underdogs and all but the "wanna be the greatest this that or the other" is sort of becoming annoying because you see it everywhere. AOT was fresh and I know it's never going to be forgotten even if it's ending somehow sucks. It did not need to be a shonen jump title to get attention. I say this knowing the series has plenty of set backs.

    Man, love so much our war criminal Jaeger. The latest chapter ends with Jean basically having to commit a warcrime (killing an unharmed childsoldier) to stop a warcriminal. Will he? Won't he?
    For Eren there was no need for such cliffhanger. The moment we see him confront Reiner we know for sure what he was there for. He was there to commit a city raid in spite of civilian presence. And not for revenge. It was just to behead the enemy, disarm him and give his nation the upper hand.
    Reiner's warcrimes were basically something he did along the way, to sow some chaos in the face of the enemy and try to strike in any way at his enemy, even tought it didn't really allowed him to get as close as he needed to his mission's end goal.
    Moreover his actions put him on the way to lose 2 titans and awaken the military effort of Paradis Island.
    It was the action of a desperate youngster trying to strike however he could at his enemy. On the other hand Eren warcrimes were literally aimed for the jugular. He achieved most of his goals within minutes of his first blow and even if his strike team were to fully retreat now they would have inflicted a catastrophic blow to Marley, killing it's leader and many officer, most titan warrior, disarming part of their fleet, destabilizing their chance to get allies and scaring the living shit out of the whole nation. And that's the power of a cold blood well staged massacre for you kids.
    No amount of shonen protagonist drive and obnoxiousness will ever achieve such goals in real life and that's why we can buy in Eren latest (as far) impressive successfull action.

I understand why people didn't like him but for me, even during his naive youth, he had something that a majority of people in Attack on Titan didn't have: Guts. Drive. Out of the countless cowards, bureaucrats and people who were unsure of themselves, Eren was always the one who was willing to step up. People can say what they will about him, but Eren Jaeger is the fucking man. :)

      Matheus Cruz well that's what makes him unique. All these main characters win most of the time and thats annoying. He beaten Reiner in their second fight and in first he would do the same if colossal didn't fall on him. That doesn't make him a boring character tho.. Based on Eren's character, being a man of determination and action, what he did indicated his feelings for Mikasa better than what seemed to be Mikasa's original intention of kissing him. Bro, you're not being botted. Gotta rip that bandaid off early. Since your dislikes are about the same as my undertale video, i'd guess that the dislikes are a side effect of video length. What I found with that video was that, not everyone is going to sit through the whole video just to make sure that a dislike is the right decision. I think, like my Undertale video, your premise becomes the strongest near the very end when things come full circle, but people who hate the initial ideas presented are impatient and unless you quickly prove them otherwise, they're going to assume the rest is fluff.
      It kinda sucks that long videos aren't suited to contrarian ideas, but, depending how important likes/dislikes are to you, its just something you have to work around.

      Disagree. Yes it has it’s flaws and issues but I think that the point the ending is supposed to be disappointing. I think Isayama wanted the ending to confound us and leave us saying “what the hell?!?” This show has always been a commentary and allegory for the flaws of humanity and it’s nature. Ultimately I think it stays true to the theme by showing that no matter what we do true freedom is simply unattainable. I don’t think Eren being a clueless slave to fate was outta nowhere. Call me a arrogant smartass but I think it was pretty clear that Eren was a unwilling slave to fate since the time travel reveal. Even his founding design is a hint at this, he’s literally being strung up and hanged by strings does that look free to you? Not to mention I there’s a pretty reasonable explanation for Eren’s behavior and that he developed multiple personality disorder or a extreme fictional version of bipolar disorder. This hypothesis is not without basis either, Eren was shown to have always been screwed up in the head since childhood he killed two men without remorse so likely a form of anti-social personality disorder. Couple that with repeated trauma and excessive stress in his adolescence it was only a matter of time before his mental state snapped. I guess ultimately it’s like Kenny Ackerman once said “everyone’s a slave to something”. I think that’s the point the ending wasn’t supposed to be satisfying. Eren was always a flawed character I think the fault was with us, we idolize and got attached to Eren when we shouldn’t of. Isayama wrote Eren not as a noble character but one driven by his wrath, rage, fear and obsession. Look I’m not to happy with the ending, I originally hated it as well and even went as far as to rant about it online but I think at the end of the day the end is the end I think we should move on. A far better use of our time and energy would be to analyze this story and it’s themes

      he has been my favourite since season 1 episode 1 since he was a 12-15 year old CHILD (may I remind you he's a fucking traumatised child, people should cut him some slack), I emphathised and understood exactly why he acted the way he did and why his 'angry kid' resolve didn't break until he was faced with some really shitty and traumatisinglife events. Then in s3, after he started to witness memories of his father because of the attack titan, he became so mentally drained like he was still as 15 year old kid when these horrible, gory memories of reality came and knocked him full force, making him question eveything he believed in and what he knew about the world... and he bared that burden alone, not telling anyone because he cared for his friends' safety (such as Historia)... idk maybe he could be a bit of a brat at first but that came from an intentioanlly good place. Many people are unempathetic who watches AOT and they have the intelligence of a spoon to not understand Eren.

      Think of walking up to a group of kids and handing one kid a large bag of candies. Others will see that kid stands out because he is the only one holding candy, but that bag could have been given to anyone else. Eren in my opinion was thrusted into this complex plot in the world by his father, an outlier instead of an inevitably. He obtained the attack and founding Titans from Grisha thanks to a strange time loop deal involving its special ability, but who's to say that someone else couldn't have received it, or done a much better job using it than him. Eren is not a holder of the founder's bloodline or a super soldier Ackerman, just a boy given a set of tools and told to "work". Like Spider-Man, the origin and set of circumstances all comes down to luck and possibility, that's just how it happened.
      Eren was a normal boy formed by his cruel world, and I love it. The author found such a good way to make him special through growth and not birth.

      I completely agree. In reality... cliche endings don't exist. Isayama really takes AOT and gives us something that's far more realistic. Cliches only bring about emotions from the audience, but these emotions are forced. AOT is so different... because of its uncertainties and its cruelty... it brings our true, raw emotions from its audience. Life doesn't always go according to what we want, and AOT really embodies that truth. I want the Eldians to live. I want the Survey Corps to all live, but if it ends differently, I wouldn't oppose it. It's reality. If they live, so be it. If they die, so be it because it just is.

      @@Nigben22 It's mainly because it recontextualizes a lot of past events and the meaning some had grown attached to within Eren's character (not necessarily his goals but his development or mentality). It portrays Eren in a completely different well rendering much of his words empty or confusing as new context was added. It is essentially a betrayal to those who became invested in his character(those who saw him in that way), especially after seeing this video, as this video almost served as a birthing point to many liking Eren's character. It seems almost as if the points made in this video do not apply anymore or the in other video, hence probably why Soul said "lol".

      @@Nigben22 adding onto what Dylan said,, it abandons the shows themes and has an open ended ending which felt unsatisfactory and awkward, almost like it was trying to lead up to a sequel or something. it turned ymir fritz into a villain last minute which was unexpected from a show that had such a focus on moral ambiguity,, they also strip her of her themes of freedom by making her character be driven by her love for king fritz, who literally enslaved her, abused her, raped her, cut out her tongue, and fed her to the children he forced her to have,, instead of having her character symbolize a complete lack of freedom by her inability to have any free will of her own, submitting to any orders she's given. it throws in a love story between eren and mikasa out of nowhere, which was wholesome and everything but kind of made no sense,,, they excuse it by saying that eren was a dick on purpose to make armin and her hate him,, but still leaves no explanation for season 1-3 eren being a jealous asshole who constantly ignored mikasa and everything she did for him. the ending felt to me like eremika fan service or like a fanon ending someone wrote to make themselves feel better about the real ending. and on top of that a lot of the chapter just made no fucking sense and was confusing, it hasn't been officially translated yet though so i'm not blaming isayama or holding it against the story quite yet. i liked a lot of things about the end but ultimately it felt off i guess,, it's like the whole story was leading up to a different end but was changed last second (which is probably true because isayama said he had a different ending in mind originally but changed it after the series got popular). i recomend reading up about the AnR ending and seeing how much more that would have made sense in the story. one of my favorite things about aot is the foreshadowing sprinkled throughout the show/manga and how it managed to be both obvious and subtle at the same time, making it apparent to the reader or watcher that isayama knew exactly where the story was going from the very beginning. one of the major moments that cemented aot as a complete masterpiece in my eyes and as my favorite story of all time was rewatching it and realizing how obvious it was that reiner annie and bertholdt were titan shifters, or how ymir's backstory shows civilization outside of the walls, or ymir fritz in the story books that were read to historia as a child, and so much more hints left in plain sight that could have spoiled the entire show for me if i had just been looking for it,, but were still placed so well that i had no clue. in comparison, the end of aot and the changes in erens character especially create so many continuity errors and contradictions to previous aspects of the story,, anytime i try to think back on the show and on eren as a character in perspective of chapter 139 (in aot as a whole but especially season 4)i have to hurt my brain trying to justify it and why it makes sense. again i don't blame you for liking the ending at all, and i don't blame isayama for me being unsatisfied with it either,, aot is a super popular story that everyone enjoys for different reasons, and i don't think there was any way he or anybody could have written an ending that pleased everyone,, at the end of the day i still think it's a beautiful story and i'm really glad that you enjoyed it's ending! i just wanted to offer some perspective and i would love to hear the things you liked about it! i hope this helps

      I think the point of the manga is to show us, that you shouldn't discriminate people because of their past mistakes and that if you do, you leave them no other choice than to fight... the reason they are "evil" is, that you forced them to be evil. The King of Eldia just wanted to live in peace on an island where he can't harm anyone but the rest of the world still hated Eldians, were afraid of them and ultimately wanted them all to die. So many people died, the Eldians couldn't live in peace and even after 2000 years the rest of the world couldn't forgive and that showed Eren, that there is no other choice. It's either them or the Eldians and he made his decision, because for him the only people that matter are his friends. The point of this story isn't to think in black or white or good or evil. The point is, that humanity will always fight, always discriminate people they are afraid of and that both sides are at fault of it and that humanity needs to forgive and to stop discriminating people to the point where violence is the only way out of it. Thats my take on it at least.

    I agree w you completely only difference is I've always been on the Eren defence squad since I first watched the show. While everyone else was rolling their eyes at bratty little Eren being eager to join the survey corp and kill all the titans, I was cheering him on. Of course his idealogy at the time was rather simplistic but why should we expect anything better from a child growing up in such conditions? At least half the kids Eren's age should've grown up with the same absolute disdain Eren had for all the Titans. The beauty of young Eren's character for me was his ability to be and remain sufficiently pissed at the horrible situations he constantly found himself in. It made the character feel more real bc his reactions were always loud and brass and pumped w the kind of anger you'd expect an actual person to exhibit if thrown in the same position. Also, Eren's energetic response to his circumstances always made him more fun to watch than characters like Levi and Mikasa who barely react to many things and always seemed way too put together and focused at all times inspite of the never ending chaos that had become their every day life.
    Eren's breakdown officially made him my favourite anime character of all time and gave me a whole new reason to love Eren Yeager's character. Eren's admission of his own insignificance in the grand scheme of things showed a true turning point for the character and the entire thing was conveyed in the most Eren way possible - with a lot of yelling.
    The character of Eren Yeager has always been a beautiful one for me bc of the brilliant writting used to mold the character from childhood to adulthood. Eren's character isn't powerful bc he's special. He's also not perfect just bc he's the mc and that's absolutely the best route to take with every mc in my opinion bc it leaves room for growth and character development which eventually makes the show much more fun to watch and at the end of it all, you'll truly feel like you've gone on a journey w the mc.
