      @@chamseddineabderrahim2853 welcome to the grub error land, here all the noobs either strive to learn and be resilient or close the doors to Linux forever.
      I'm also in it, I've been living with these errors for last 4months my screen just says "No bootOrder found, initializing defaults" but it by default boots into Ubuntu and on that blank screen if I hit down arrow twice I boot into windows **magic**
      I think I know what is going on with my system I might've messed up files of my /boot/grub
      Imma try this hope it works

    The process after launching boot-repair was a bit different on Ubuntu 20.04 LTS but it was simple. It just asks you to run a few commands in the terminal and then it works automatically. Thanks.

    1. Windows actually creates 2 partitions because 1st is for holding Windows Bootloader EFI files. Booting directly into Windows C drive (sda3 in this case) may not work if Legacy support is off from UEFI menu.
    2. I prefer using GRUB Customiser for editing grub.cfg file because everytime Ubuntu kernel was updated, Ubuntu will recreate grub.cfg with duplicate entries. And GRUB Customiser also allows hiding entries which may be useful for those who has Legacy support off. And also GRUB Customiser has easy to use GUI.

    What's FlexNet at 7:00? By the way, a volume does have an underlying partition, so it's both a partition and a volume. But unlike a partition, a volume can consist of more than one partition and span several physical disks.

    I am new to Linux and using terminal for everything, so I am often searching for the correct commands. Used part of the directions and some creativity to edit my grub start-up order. I now have my Windows OS as first choice and Linux (Mint Xfce) second. Mint Xfce uses xed for text editing, so in grub directory the command line changes to 'sudo xed grub.cfg'.

    I don't think it's safe to change grub.cfg. Rather the /etc/default/grub and generate the grub.cfg afterwards by executing update-grub.
    This is because grub.cfg is automatically generated and it self checks itself in case of issues and incompatibilities in order to minimise chances of fatal errors.

    Everything in your process was working out great, until I launched the boot-repair app. When the GUI loaded, it was missing the "Recommended Repair" button (and the "Advanced options" button), it just had the "Create Bootinfo Summary" button. I tried launching it a few more times with the same GUI, so no joy. Has anyone else seen this issue or have any ideas?

    Did not work for me. I could do all the steps you did and in the end it said „Bootloader successfully repaired“, however, still booting to Windows. Now I understand, why so few people are using Linux. It is so hard to get it running. Very sad, that it only seems to be possible to set up a dual boot for professionals...

    • @artmcteagle
      @artmcteagle 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Tim Danger, I would recommend the excellent Linux Mint with the 'cinnamon' desktop if you are a newbie. For a general idea about installing a Linux OS, here is a very good link Linux Mint 19 For Windows Users:
      th-cam.com/video/eI7QQqnV1P8/w-d-xo.html
      If you are running Windows and would like to dual boot, detailed below is more or less the procedure I went through with a few personal notes.
      I run Ubuntu 16.04 LTS alongside Windows 10 and it goes really good and is stable. ( you may want to substitute the Mint 19 cinnamon iso instead of the Ubuntu iso, otherwise the steps are identical). Let Mint partition the HDD automatically, just suggest how much disk space you want.
      I found this the best (really excellent) user friendly guide to dual booting: How To Install Ubuntu Linux Alongside Windows 10 (UEFI); everydaylinuxuser.com/2015/11/how-to-install-ubuntu-linux-alongside.html note that the USB stick is used to install the Linux OS from within Windows itself, easy.
      How To Install Ubuntu Linux Alongside Windows 10 (Standard Bios, non UEFI); www.everydaylinuxuser.com/2015/11/how-to-install-ubuntu-linux-alongside_8.html Can't comment on this guide as mine is UEFI.
      IMPORTANT; There is also a guide on the site to CLEANLY de-installing Ubuntu if you find that you don't want it.
      IMPORTANT; Bear in mind that Linux and Windows run differently on the hardware clock. I changed my Windows clock (easier) to run on UTC time, (do this before dual boot install) here is a guide to that: mikebeach.org/2011/04/10/windows-linux-dual-boot-system-time-issues/
      Also during installation if you're asked -do you want to verify the install (or something like that) -say NO! (trust me on this).
      Download and use 'Etcher' to burn your Ubuntu (or Mint) image onto USB drive (use a reliable stick), simpler than others such as SD-Formater, I find anyway.
      Have your WiFi password handy during the install (and also make note of your new Ubuntu password) and do the updates (including 3rd party software) at the same time. I hope this is of some help if want to give Dual-booting a go.
      Read through the guides mentioned, make notes (better yet print them out), change to UTC time in windows, burn the Ubuntu (Mint) disc image using Etcher and use a good stick. Take your time and you should be fine!

    • @artmcteagle
      @artmcteagle 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      MrNihilist74, I think maybe the Grub2 bootloader is broken in your case.
      Following info is excerpted from Linux Format Magazine, issue; LXF227
      You can use the 'Rescatux' distribution to restore MBR, repair bootloaders, and more. It comes in handy if you Dual-boot as it works in Windows and Linux.
      This Distro is meant to be used as a live medium - transfer the ISO onto a disc or USB (make it bootable) and boot from it.
      You'll get a graphical interface called 'Rescapp' divided into various categories, Grub, Filesystem, Boot and Password with their respective utilities.
      Many problems with the Grub2 bootloader can be resolved with the touch of a button in Boot-Repair (Expert Tools category) in the Rescapp utility. Follow the tool's advice and simply press the Recommended repair button, which should fix most broken bootloaders.
      www.supergrubdisk.org/rescatux

    so, I can't just download Boot Repair from the GUI? I did this before, but not with a live USB....and it refused to work because it needed a LIVE USB. Also, in my boot manager (blue box where I select which OS I want), I see the entries of Linux distros i deleted, but there is no sda associated with them because I formatted the partitions to put another distros there. So, in the terminal, will the old sda be there still? And, for me, if so, it will be the same #s as what i have now

It's annoying, but it's exactly necessary. That's genius on your part. Jajaja. This solution din´t work for me, and now no even the live stick, is able to be detected, , no grub inside the boot I guess, I have a dual boot, Windows 7 and Ubuntu 20.04, set in separated SSHD, the problems begin when updating from 18.04 to 20.04, separating the disk, make the only disk with Ubuntu 20.04, start, but trying your solution in the both disk configuration, did went wrong, and now I´m stuck, please if you can make a recommendation, please help.

    After clicking on recommend I am getting error "The current session is in Legacy mode. Please reboot the computer, and use this software in an EFI session. This will enable this feature. For example, use a live-USB of Boot-Repair-Disk-64bit (www.sourceforge.net/p/boot-repair-cd), after making sure your BIOS is set up to boot USB in EFI mode
