  • How to Remove GNU Grub 2.0 Bootloader Screen after Deleting Ubuntu/Linux [Updated!]
UPDATE: A follow-up to this method on how to remove grub bootloader from Windows can be found here: www.dopetechfever.com/2020/07...

How To Remove Gnu Grub Version 2.02 after Deleting Ubuntu/Linux and restore windows boot loader after grub has been deleted.
In this video, let's understand why your computer shows grub rescue after deleting ubuntu partition and learn how to fix it!
    --------------------------------------------COMMANDS-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Use these to fix GNU GRUB Error screen and get back into windows:
    -- insmod part_gpt [press enter]
    -- insmod chain [press enter]
    -- ls [press enter]
//here, go into each partition and look for a "/boot" folder
    //for instance, (hd0,gpt1)/efi/microsoft/boot/bootmgfw.efi
    -- chainloader (hd0,gpt1)/efi/microsoft/boot/bootmgfw.efi [press enter]
    -- boot [press enter]
You should now be able to see the Windows loading screen.
Once into windows, or even without successful boot, open the command prompt (Admin) through the OS or the Recovery Menu.
Type the below commands to change the default boot manager:
    -- bcdedit [press enter]
//check the pathname under windows 10 boot manager. It will usually be set to grubx64.efi.
//We need to replace that with the windows boot manager
    -- bcdedit /set {bootmgr} path \efi\microsoft\boot\bootmgfw.efi [press enter]
Now, to delete GRUB Partition, try these steps:
Go to CMD (Run as Administrator)
    Type
    - Diskpart
    - List Disk
    - Select Disk 0 (where your dual-boot OS was installed)
    - List partition
(Select Partition that has "system" type)
    - Select Partition 2
    - assign letter=z
(You'll now see it as a logical drive Z in file manager)
    - exit (this will exit diskpart)
    - z:
    Z:\ - dir
(It will list all the directories available)
    - cd efi
    (Will enter efi folder)
    - dir
(Will list directories under efi folder)
(We now have to delete the Linux grub)
    - rd (name_of_your_linux_grub) /s
    - Are you sure? (Y/N): Y
    (This will remove that directory)
    - exit
Just restart your PC. You're good to go!
You should now be completely rid of your GNU GRUB problem.
    --------------------------------------------END OF COMMANDS-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

If you're on an ASUS device, you might not need to do this. Here's how I fixed it:
    1) Repeatedly tap esc while starting up, until you see a screen to select a boot option.
    2) Use the arrow keys to navigate to the 'Enter Setup' option and press enter. You should now see the ASUS BIOS/UEFI options and be able to use your mouse and click.
    3) Go into advance mode, select boot, and there should be something there that allows you to change the boot options you saw on the screen in step 1. Just disable all the options except the Windows bootloader, maybe delete the ubuntu option, and it should be fixed! (I forgot how exactly I did the last step so sorry I can't hold your hand here).

and if anyone else runs into the issue where it's still there, do the same process as listed but don't delete any boot options, create one and go to the path of where the boot is (efi/microsoft/boot/bootmgfw.efi), name it windows, then create it, go back into boot and disable the boot option named 'ubuntu' (delete it if you want), save & exit, reboot, and you should be back into windows

You just need to open each partition and look for a boot image. If yours is in the gpt2 partition, then provide that path to chainloader and type "boot".

    • @DopeTechFever

The path needs to have forward slashes "/" I believe. If the given path has spelling errors of some sort, you'll get the Grub back when you reboot.

Hello, I have a query and I need ur help sir.
So, I just bought a new laptop which didn't have any heavy contents, it was majorly empty. I mean my hard disk was empty .
So I wanted to dual boot .
    Installed ubuntu successfully.
But then after my third try I was not able to find the option that would help switch to the windows option.
And I got this grub thing and I searched hard to get rid of this thing .
    Thankfully found this video.
I typed in the commands and the partition that has run so far doesn't show the Microsoft thing
    Infact it shows ....
    Ubuntu/boot/
    And no Microsoft.
Does this mean that my Microsoft OS has completed changed to Ubuntu?
But if I put the backup drive of Microsoft will I be able to access Microsoft again or not?
What should I do ??? Please help.
If I m not clear I can explain again.

    • @DopeTechFever
      @DopeTechFever  2 ปีที่แล้ว

Maybe while installing you selected "erase everything and install Ubuntu". This would've format all data on the drive, including Windows OS.

    The boot wasn't successful.
Later in OS cmd in admin mode - in bcdedit command the path doesn't reflect as mentioned - grubx64.efi.
It shows the path as \EFI\Microsoft\Boot\bootmgfw.efi
And the grub page open ups everytime.

If you haven't set "root=(your partition hdx, gpty)", then go ahead and try that..

      "Chainloader /efi/microsoft/boot/bootx64.efi"
