    This is how you had to equip and modify a truck of this era to tow heavy loads reliably before the advent of $50,000, 490hp 3/4-ton trucks you can buy off the showroom floor. The trans is a TH400 with a huge cooler and that air-cooled trans pan. It's probably been rebuilt once or twice already. The overdrive unit is there because back in those days even the 454 was only about 210hp, so in order to get a heavy trailer moving they put 4:10 gears in the rear. That made highway driving miserable because the engine was spinning about 3,000 rpm at 60 mph. It wouldn't HURT it but it was loud and probably got about 8 mpg. That's why the auxiliary tank and that hugely complicated switching system are there, so they didn't have to stop every 100 miles and fill the tank. I noticed there's a belt guard above the AC compressor. The cruise control is aftermarket. The engine has newer valve covers and isn't orange so I figure it's been rebuilt at least once as well. That's a super nice truck, but modern girly-men would last about 2 days driving that rig around as stiff as those ride before they would run screaming back to their comfy luxo-trucks.

      @alan6832 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@dwitcraft why should he keep it with no 5th wheel trailer? He already has a spare with the same engine, and really shouldn't pull parts off working trucks anyway. Find one you can't fix for spares.

    What a nice, well preserved truck. This one strikes a chord with me. My dad bought a 1973 GMC 3/4 ton pickup that was the exact same color, except it had a vinyl seat. It had a 454. I think he bought it in late 1979 or so. I was really young. I remember he didn't have it for very long. He put it on a dyno at the dealer and they said it was losing 50 horsepower somewhere. Dad did some work on the valves with no improvement. He traded it in. I do have fond memories of that truck. So nice to see one in such great shape! BTW that's the first time I've seen the spare mounted on the rear bumper. I'm sure most of us over 40 recall all the pickup trucks that used to have the spare hanging off the front grille - a serious wind drag!

    I'd love an old truck like that. All set up for heavy duty towing and haulling. Extra coolers and even one of the air flow trans pans they used to sell. Always Smart to keep an air filter on the car/ truck it keeps mice from getting into your engine and destroying it with pee. That stuff eats metal. Fixing an old Q-jet you best replace that crappy Phenolic float. It sat for years and soaked up the gas. It will keep flooding soon. A brass float is so much better.

      To prevent rust, go to the self serve car wash, select spray wax, and spray all potential rust, especially the underside but also in trunk and engine bay. Also, silicone tire shine protects exhaust. Or move to the desert. His exhaust has some rust that could use tire shine.

    Accelerator pump... overcomes the inertial lag of the normally aspirated gas engine... FI engines have an extra volume "squirt" programmed into them.. just to mimic this old technology mechanical accelerator pump. Great barn find.. especially if it's from a member of your family... I'm a Porsche / Mercedes guy, but the 454 was areliable beast in my old Winnebago .

    You guys out there on the west coast are lucky to have such a good climate that a truck that old can survive in that shape. In NJ where I'm from, even sitting in that building that old truck would have a bunch of rust on it. And if it had been driven regularly, it wouldn't have survived the elements here. It probably would've gone to the scrapyard 30 years ago completely rusted out.

    This is one of those once in a lifetime barn finds. Finding one in that condition with a 454, nice interior and what appears to be minimal rust. It also should be exempt from emissions.
