It's wild to think this many people changed their own starters in this vehicle. Nobody's watching this solely for enjoyment. To echo others, concise, accurate and easy-to-follow video.
Very, very, VERY TIRED, but I got the job done thanks to you! It was a simple job like you said, it was just the element of doing something for the first time that made it feel so exhausting. Felt really rewarding however once everything was finished and I heard the sound of my Corolla running again! Thanks again 😊👍
An awesome detailed tutorial. I would recommend this tutorial to anyone, it's very clear and concise. Because I'm not a mechanic and unfortunately do come from a layman's point of view, I would suggest to others, when placing the starter into the bell housing, make sure the wires are clear from point of entry, otherwise you may insert the starter and then crank down the two starter bolts until you discover the power wire has been lodged and pinched between the seal. Another suggestion; when positioning the shroud, be beware that there are left side & right side Shroud slide in attachments found at the base of the shroud to seat the frame,.
Two Thumbs up. My 260 000km Corolla had this exact problem, was able to do it in 3h 😂😴. But hey, the part cost me 30$, no labor, and hopefully this car will last another 100 000km😁
Thank you very much for making this video. My starter died last night and was able to buy a new one and put it in myself because of you. And know I have a new skill :)
Thanks so much! Literally sitting in my '03 'Rolla right now, breathing a sigh of relief. Your video was very instructive and I'd recommend it to anyone.
Watched a few other videos about this before starting, but you demostrating how to take off the fan shroud was key for me. Plenty of room to work and having never replaced a starter before it took me less than 30 minutes from start to finish. Thank you Sir.
Replaced my 2006 Corolla starter today thanks to your video. Really, pretty easy. 30 minutes or so. Finding the button to release the electrical clips was the hardest part for me. Everything else was straight forward thanks to you! I appreciate you making this video...helped me out greatly. Thanks, dude!
Hi Tod! You just heped a random girl in France! Thank you so so much! It took me 1,5h only! The hardest part was to assemble the starter back and fit the bolts through. My toyota (Corolla Verso 2005) is working after being dead for 2 weeks. Wooho, so happy! I wish you had a one-time donation option on your Patronite, that would be absolutely well deserved!
Thank you so much for this detailed and clear description in replacing Toyota Corolla starter. I'm not a handyman, and this is my first time replacing the starter. I succeeded because of this video. Thank you and thank you!
Thanks so much for this video! My starter stopped while I was states away from home, and I was able to replace it myself with the help of this video. All the mechanics in the area were booked solid and I almost ended up being stranded because of it. Thanks so much for your help!
Clear, concise video - Doing mine this morning - Will edit with results - Thanks for the lesson! (An hour later...) Finished, it went perfectly thanks to your video! - I ended up replacing the two zip-ties that hold the wiring harness to the fan shrouding as they snapped from age. The upper bolt in back was tricky to get to but did it all with a 3/8" socket wrench, 10mm deep socket and short 12mm and 14mm sockets and a screwdriver. Also took the liberty of deep-cleaning the battery terminals and connectors with the two-piece terminal cleaning tool. Most amazing thing, I didn't curse once and that's something! No blood, no broken knuckles. Thanks Todd, and thanks unknown Toyota designer.
Brilliant description of the whole process. Thank you for doing this video. Did the job in less than 45 minutes thanks to knowing exactly what to do and which tools were required.
Thanks for the video. The fan shroud was the most important aspect to know how to do. Other videos didn’t start with that…glad yours did! Made it easy.
Thank you! Hey, wd40 helps with getting the clips off the wire to the fan. They came off super easy after applying a short controlled spray of dw40 directly on clips. Successfully replaced starter on 2003 Toyota Corolla.
Just used your video today with little to no experience working with cars I had a lil help but we both managed pretty well with your help thank you , saved me $200+ thank you again.
Thank you so much for this detailed step-by-step walkthrough of how to remove and replace the starter in an older Corolla. I have an 07 and everything went smoothly. I watched this video a couple of times before heading out to do it and it took only about 30 minutes to change it out. Having all the tools ready beforehand was helpful as you stated in your video what sizes are required. My car that wouldn't start on me is now functional again (I also replaced the starter relay to make sure everything was essentially new).
This was an awesome tutorial! Thanks for putting it together. I too bought an eBay refurb starter for my 2008 Corolla for $40 when I watched this video in 2020. I am back at this same tutorial replacing that refurb starter with another one 2 years later!
Thank you! This video helped huge!!! Car has nearly 3k miles. I changed out my factory starter 2.5 years ago at Advanced Discount Auto. Starter was a little over a hundred bucks, but it had a lifetime warranty and they honored that. I think other auto parts stores do the same thing. So the fix was purely labor. This job took 2 hours the first time and only 1 hour the second time because we knew kinda what we were doing and this video helped a ton! Excellent job!
Great job in making a super useful, concise how-to for replacing the starter on my corolla. It was really handy having the extra room by taking the fan shroud off. Thanks!!
Thank you for your seamless instructional video! It made the process super easy for a non mechanical person. Was able to replace the starter in about an hour and saved some cash too!!
I just changed my starter myself for only $50. Just found a starter on Amazon and it was the easiest swap I’ve ever done. Thank god for this video. Saved me $320
I bought my 2003 Corrola NEW off the lot in May 2002. I drove it until last year and then gave it to my 17 year old son. This morning I get the call that "the car won't start". This car has 160,000+ miles on it. It sat for 2 years while I was stationed overseas from 04-06. Anyway, everything checked out except the starter. I followed your instructions and in less than an hour the car was running again. Excellent instructional video! The only thing I did differently was to remove the short bracket held on by two bolts that blocks access to the back starter mounting bolt. (this may be a model year thing) Easy two bolts and my pudgy hands were able to get to and see that back mounting bolt. The two bolts on the bracket are two different lengths, so keep track of that for reassembly. That's all I did to make it a little easier. Now hoping to get another 160K miles out of the car. Best car ever! I tell my son that every month his car runs and keeps getting him to class and work is like putting $350 a month in the bank! Again, EXCELLENT video!!!
My toyota corolla didn't start this morning, after watching your video I'm going to replace my starter. I check in ebay and its only 38 ., so thank you for the video. I already suscribe
Excellent video! At the moment, I'm broke down at a gas station with a bad starter, so I know what I'm going to be doing in the morning . . . Especially liked the callouts of the socket sizes needed! That really helps . . . Of course the one you know you'll ALWAYS need on a Toyota is a 10mm, but it's good to know the rest. Also glad it's not buried on the other side on the engine.
Cool. I just did it today on a 2006 Matrix. I had it jacked up and was gonna take it out from underneath, then realized I could just remove the fan shroud. Then I realized I had watched this video several years ago. Thanks!
Thank you for your video on how to remove the cover and replace the starter motor. Especially your precise instructions, my husband was able to replace the starter motor on my 2005 Toyota. M. Wilson
Thanks a lot Todd, your video helped me greatly! Was having little troubles finding one of the two big screws, but found it after I saw the video a second time. All in all one hour job and saved hundreds of dollars.
A little aggravating but pretty straight forward. Mine had a bracket in front if the throttle cable assembly that had to be removed in order to get to the starter bolts but, other than that, exactly like your vid showed. With it being a first time job for me it took abt 3 hours including time to rest my aching back from bending over front of car. Saved me at least a couple hundred bucks in labor charges. Good vid. Thanks.
I like your videos, you show every step in the process. Some videos skip the clip removal or other miscellaneous steps that are important to people that only work on vehicles as needed rather than a daily basis. I have a 2006 Corolla that I am about to change the starter for a second time. The last time I changed it was 2 years ago and this refreshes my memory. I had a valve cover oil leak (fixed now) that dripped oil on to the starter. Thanks!
Thank you sooo much. I just replaced the starter on my ‘06 Corolla and it was a breeze! The thing completely stopped working a couple of days ago. You saved me a lot of money!
Thank you from Finland for your clear and well explained installation video! New starter motor installed and my corolla -06, got started well! Tomorrow I’ll see if the ignition problem with hot engine is gone!
Thank you for the informative and detailed video!! Changed my starter in less than 30 minutes!! Luckily I started vehicle & turned on AC. Found out I forgot to plug in electric fan. I'll be looking for more of your videos.
Thank you for your video! With a help of your advice I replaced the starter just a moment ago. Previously I had only replaced light bulbs and once the brake discs on the car. Thanks for sharing! :) (From Estonia)
Thanks. I wasn't sure how to get to it but this was helpful. A tip for some if after you take out the bolts it stays in place tap it with a pipe wrench or something like it and it will loosen off. That's the issue i had but i got it.
Thanks for the useful video. I have had two Corollas, 2004 and 2005, both developed starter problems. First was due to the ground strap corroding off (no protection on it, no good in salt country) and second was brushes wearing out (I think). In both cases this renders the car 'dead', so knowing about the starter is important as these cars get older. cheers.
Thank you for the video!!! Very informative and I am pleased to report that I just finished installing a starter in my Corolla and it was a complete success thanks to you!
You are truly excellent, but I hope you support videos in the Arabic language so that we Arabs can benefit from you. Thank you for your effort and explaining to us. Thank you very much.
Just did this, thanks to you. The far bolt was a stinker but I got it. Unfortunately, when I rinsed my battery in driveway with hot water, I got a stain on driveway. If you ever do that, take it to a parking lot.
On the Corolla there is no reason to remove the fan, you can work the starter out through the underneath of the car pretty easily. Which keeps you from accidentally hitting your radiator and going through all those extra steps and time.
It's wild to think this many people changed their own starters in this vehicle. Nobody's watching this solely for enjoyment.
To echo others, concise, accurate and easy-to-follow video.

Brother thank u i just did the whole process by myself first time about 2 hours all thanks 2 u god bless u
Thanks for the useful video. I have had two Corollas, 2004 and 2005, both developed starter problems. First was due to the ground strap corroding off (no protection on it, no good in salt country) and second was brushes wearing out (I think). In both cases this renders the car 'dead', so knowing about the starter is important as these cars get older. cheers.

On the Corolla there is no reason to remove the fan, you can work the starter out through the underneath of the car pretty easily. Which keeps you from accidentally hitting your radiator and going through all those extra steps and time.
Very clear instructions. Thank you for taking the time to upload this.
Thanks for watching! Glad it helped!
On our 2004 Corolla, the starter’s rear bolt was the more difficult to get to, but persistence paid off. About a 25 min. Project.
