think you pretty much just simulate one main part and fake the rest working solo at lest, ends up looking nice in most ppls stuff while not crashing their pcs
This is an amazing tutorial. I needed thruster flames for the starships in my short film and simulating took a long time. This provided a better result than what I could simulate lol. Also that's not even considering the increased performance using this method.
Yea, I’m using this method also mostly for spaceship engines. Depending on how close it is seen, it’s oftentimes enough to just use one singe plane, instead of multiple cylinders
When I googled how this thrust fire is called, I could not find a specific well known name. It oftentimes is just called Jet. That is why I put the arrow on the thumbnail, and also tried to explain what I’m doing in the very beginning. So that people can leave early on, if they don’t like it. @@mlt-studios maybe call it 'jet engine effect'. anyway... some of this stuff is genius, thanks for this video. i've done similar things, but your trick with the AO to mask the hard edges is perfectly elegant, and i'll definitely be using it in the future.

Maybe you can follow it up with some gas leaks, vibration of the engine as well as the exhaust turning up shades of hot red with time? I think then it would be super SUPER realistic
You definitly could. To be honest, I just used this method for adding some realisme to my Spaceship Engines, which wherent really seen closeup. So adding all that would probably be overkill. But yea, if you are going for a closeup, adding stuff like this will make it more believable.

very good solution, maybe add some delay between the texture animations on the different planes? anyways thanks for the tutorial I think it´s a very useful and smart approach
Nice tutorial but i encountered an issue, in some angles where the inner thrust cylinder and outter thrust cylinder are overlapping, it looks blocky, only soloution i found was turning off backface culling but that made the longer plane thrust not visible from all sides.
hello so I managed everything, it's great but I still have a little problem! in fact I would like to duplicate my element and when I do it it creates a black trace in the negative part... it's complicated to explain but if someone is able to help me I would be willing :)
Hello. first of all. aweseome Tutorial. Thank you. But i have an Problem. The Flames are not visible when i render it with no background and as an alpha image. The renderer shows the flames reagular, but as soon as i save it the flames disappear. How can i fix this?
Im not quite sure I understand your problem. When you hit f12 and render it she’s are there? But once you save it, it is not? I noticed something similar with one her projects. Are you just rendering the flame? Then you could try to render with black background, and then use the add blend mode, wherever you need it.
I did not shoot the footage myself. I’m not sure where I got it from. I looked online, but could not find it, nor found anything similar. Which is why I put it in the description. So best not use it commercially. Action VFX has some awesome jet engine FX, but they are paid products
for some reason whenever I mark seam and UV Unwrap it, the entire flame texture looks corrupted and distorted and on different faces no matter what I do.
Great tutorial. How do you make this effect from directly behind/head on, on that effect? since they are image cards, it doesnt look too great looking straight at it instead of at an angle.
I showed a small workaround for that at the end. But to make it proper, you need footage from that angle. Action VFX has something like that, from a lot of angles, including behind. But of course you need to buy that. If you find any free good footage, I would be interested in that as well.

I‘m not exactly sure what you mean with movie style animation. You of course can use this method in you films. It might not hold up from too close, but for a lot of stuff this should be enough
Yea, I had the same problem when I prepared for the video. Not sure, how I fixed it though. You can send me your file over discord, then I can have a look. DerMalt#0547
Is it completely gone, or just very faint? Blender sometimes has problems saving semi transparent stuff. So things, that aren’t completely opaque nor transparent. Especially when you add glow in the compositor. I‘m not quite sure, what the fix is. Did you try out different file formats?
Sure. What do you want in the background? If you want to make it transparent, just go to the Render Properties tab, and under the film panel enable transparent. If you want to have a more in detail explenation, check out this video: th-cam.com/video/GlStMZfZjSw/w-d-xo.html
@@mlt-studios There seems to be only two options for me - background completely opaque or nothing at all, when I have a transparent shader or none at all. Translucent shaders partially work, but I you can still clearly see some random polygons with the big stupid white texture. But, to summarise, I can't get the background to disappear like yours, despite having a black background and everything pretty much identical. Here's the video I'm using: th-cam.com/video/3WzWRNvhwR8/w-d-xo.html
@roaling I just looked through my test renders, and it seems I had the same problem. I think the problem first occurs, when saving the render. That is probably why I added a background and rendered without transparency. I can’t really remember. A fix would be, to move the thrust into its own collection and render it separately in a new view layer. Then you would have a view layer with the engine itself and a view layer with the thrust. For the thrust layer, you would set the engine collection to holdout, while for the engine layer you would set the thrust collection to indirect only. Then you can render the engine with transparent background and the thrust with black background. In compositing you can then simply Add the thrust to the first image with the “add” (linear dodge) blending mode.

In short: This title is what people are searching for, not how to make a jet engine thrust (or something like that). That is why I mentioned it in the beginning, so that people won’t waste time watching the full video
You mean with nodes and stuff? Using video textures is actually a way often used in the vfx Industry, which is why I wanted people to show that. Making it from scratch with nodes is probably harder to get a realistic result, but I would guess more flexible.
Congrats! This method is meant as a lightweight alternative, that does not increase rendertime that much, and can be dublicated many times. For a closeup like this, simulation would give you a more realistic result. Provided you know how too, and you PC can handle it.

What if you try using noise rather than a clip to generate thrust visual, should try it to see if it works
Yea, I tried that already, but could not get a similar realistic result. But that probably is due to my limited procedural node skills.
