  • Rough Ryder Heavy Forge Stockman (RR1977) RR heavyweight for sure. I do not own a stockman folder.( well so I thought) So was looking at The rough Ryders knives (One of my favorite knife makers) and came across the this one from their Heavy Forge Series.
Kinda like it. Heavy blades for more heavy work.
    Thanks for watching as always

Thanks George, another great comprehensive review of this knife, I had been thinking of this knife for quite a while now, it was great to see the comparison between it and the RR Artisan Wood stockman, I have that one, a lovely gentleman’s carry.
    Food for thought
    Thanks again and take care

Well George, you are up to your old tricks again. Making me spend my money. Great review! Had me looking for one of these before the video was even over! Saw the Heavy Forge Stockman on Amazon, and got to thinking that Rough Ryder was a SMKW house brand, so I went there as well. They had both the Heavy Forge Stockman AND a Heavy Forge Trapper ! The Trapper is my favorite style folding knife. So I did what any reasonable man would do. I ordered both!
I do like the thick blade on the Heavy Forge knives. Can’t wait to see how they actually perform.
FWIW, I picked up a Trapper style knife at Walmart about a month ago. Saw it for $4.97. I figured it would not be any good, but for $5, I had to try it out. Been using it for the past 4 weeks and I am impressed. The only thing I don’t like about it is the shape of the Spey blade is not exactly correct. Close, but not correct, although I have had no issues using it. You should try one out.m

Great looking knife, friend. Think I will get one. By the way, the "sheep's foot" is more of a coping blade. They are basically the same except for the angled end on the coping blade instead of the curved end on a sheep's foot blade. Thank you, sir, for the video.

    Great looking knife !
At that price point the Rough Riders have quite a following.
It’ll be interesting to see how many of their products end up Heavy Forged.
Your due for a sharpening video- :)
May all your journeys be adventures and your havens safe

T10 is actually a ridiculously good budget knife steel. If it's in the 62 to 65hrc range and the heat treat protocol is done well it will out preform your base stainless super steels like say S30v in raw edge retention. The only reason T10 isn't highly popular is that it's not a very tough steel and at shallower secondary bevel angles it can be chippy. I personally really like it as a budget steel because it fine edge holding ability is very good it's working edge retention is not that great but I much prefer a knife to hold its fine edge longest and a short working edge rather then the fine edge not lasting long and but the working edge lasting a long time. It's why I love Cru-wear so much, all it's edge retention is in the fine edge and when the fine edge is gone the it's pretty much dull. Basically T10 is a simple Ingot steel that acts a lot like Cru wear in its performance properties.
I would really like to see companies making knives in D2 change over to making those models in T10 and keeping the price the same. T10 is a better steel without a doubt then D2 imho. Well done T10 will vastly out perform then the average D2 we get in the 60 dollar and less EDC knife price range.
It's sad that T10 is such a slept on steel and not popular in the budget knife category. T10 will patina up nicely as well, a hot vinegar patina takes very well on it and then corrosion you don't have to worry about.

Need to look at T10 more. I have a Knives of Alaska bushcamp with D2 steel and its awesome. But I chipped it on a hidden nail.....the horror. I need to fix it and we know how bad I am at that. But persistance will hopefully see me thru. But now T10. Hmm .need to looked see. You say it needs to bee priced better? Same as D2.
Way back when at one time I was told that the way a steel no matter what type is heat treated determines how good it is. ? So much to know. How you keep track of all this beats me...hurts my meager brain...lol. but I am glad you are around to help me with this. Stay safe my dear. As always appriciate you. Awesome is what you are...just saying
