    The cheapest oil you can get to bed the pistons in! That makes so much sense once Mr Tyrrell explained it. After running in, over to fully synthetic oil... Brilliant

    • @marcryvon
      @marcryvon 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Yes, important. I helped a friend some 5 years ago, to rebuild his TR6 engine. We did a perfect job on it save a HUGE mistake: Synthetic oil on the restart. Bad idea! From this sad day, it's now a smoker. Less as the miles go on now but still... always a light smell of burnt oil present. Bummer.

    • @woopimagpie
      @woopimagpie 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Some oil manufacturers make specific "run-in oil", but it's just basic no-frills cheapo oil with no additives, so yeah, the no name supermarket stuff is fine. Ideally you want something that doesn't lubricate and protect things too well, it speeds up the bed in process. Just don't rev the ding out of it - be gentle, especially at first.

    • @stevefuller1779
      @stevefuller1779 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@marcryvon ,Most old school engines don't do well on modern thin oils, it gets past the rings and leaks all over the place, making smoke as well as a mess of the engine, I always get classic 20W50 for old motors.

    Iain you are an absolute master. If that car had been at the authorised dealer it would have taken 3 days to install and start up. You are absolutely correct about the materials used for exhausts. We had a RR Silver Cloud 2 and the pipes from the manifold rotted out so father had stainless pipes manufactured. The increase in noise was quite remarkable over the mild steel pipes. He then went to copper pipes for some reason and that wasn't so bad but please stick with mild steel.

    Having watched all the other episodes of this amazing engine rebuild, I was longing to see this episode but knew it may be some time owing to lockdown 😀. What Tyrell doesn’t know about Lamborghinis and Ferrari’s isn’t worth knowing! Uber professional. Harry is not far behind on his knowledge mind you 😁. Love Harry’s garage, love Harry’s farm too actually, always so interesting to view and to hear that wonderful V12 start up in this episode...what joy!!! Can’t wait to see Harry drive the Espada out of the workshop in the next installment....fab!👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

    Brilliant job! Sounds incredible! I love looking at this engine, no stupid plastic covers, no brittle plastic clips, no zillion wire bundles everywhere. Just nice, shiny, lovely to look at and work with, everlasting cast iron and some aluminium. There is an art in engineering of that era.

      All that spent on the engine why take the chassis back to bare metal and galvanise it. I'm sure I saw painted over rust scale.

  • @jimf5160

    That was pretty amazing...I have rebuilt quite a few engines and it is rare that they start up the first time with no drama.
    It is nice to be able to rev to 8...but if the engine's peak power is at 7200, due to the cams, you are just causing more wear. Of course, if you need to rev higher than 7200 to keep the engine in the power band when you upshift, that makes sense.

    • @Sci-flyer
      @Sci-flyer 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      sometimes you do it just for the sound - the original Toyota 1UZ V8 was like that - made no more power over about 5800/6000 but it sounded fantastic if you took it out to 7000!
